i can't wait for this, very excited by the clips i've seen.
By gxknight at 2:09 PM ON 06/06/09
I'm going to give it a shot because it's Stargate, but I've yet to see anything that has made me excited about this. In fact the more I see the less I'm into it. (Not that they've given a whole lot.) Maybe the show will be good? We'll see.
By jade at 2:17 PM ON 06/06/09
does anyone else think it a little too battlestar and not enough stargate?
By Smoking Robot at 2:28 PM ON 06/06/09
This looks WAY TOO MUCH like 'Stargate Galactica'.
By Smoking Robot at 2:32 PM ON 06/06/09
And whose brilliant idea was it to star Lou Diamond Phillips, has-been actor with zero personality? Oh, I see...he's the 'low-rent' James Edward Olmos. I'm a huge Gate fan, but this looks really bad.
By sermarr at 2:50 PM ON 06/06/09
Yeah I agree, should be called "Stargate Galactica"
By Age at 2:52 PM ON 06/06/09
What exactly about it (so far) is Stargate? It seems like they sapped the essence of the show out of it. Instead they should made SGA a season or 2 longer :(
By creno at 3:04 PM ON 06/06/09
sexier and grittier? egads, is this what stargate has come to? congrats on finding lou diamond phillips, i thought the guy disappeared from acting 15 years ago.
By haggard01 at 3:18 PM ON 06/06/09
Why are sci-fi fans always so negative? It's incredibly sad to hear people who are supposed to be so open minded act so closed minded and whine so much.
This looks perfectly okay to me. I'll try and if it's good I'll watch. Glad they are trying something new with an old franchise. Worked well for BSG.
By YKeeg at 3:20 PM ON 06/06/09
Yeah, it's Stargate Galactica, but don't forget Stargate Voyager! It follows the Berman-era Trek archetype perfectly. SG-1 was like Next generation: popular, exciting, made people want more. Atlantis/Deep Space Nine stuck them on a faraway alien city/space station, with a catchy little shuttle thingie to get them from place to place. And now Universe/Voyager sticks them in a grittier (maquis/starfleet vs. military/civilian) situation with no possibility to get home, and every week will be an exercise in frustration, getting "this close" to home, and yet heart-wrenchingly far away. The next Stargate, I predict, will be "Stargate: The Ernest Littlefield Diaries", the inevitable prequel series that will last four painstaking seasons before they realized they jumped the shark with "The Lost City" back in SG-1.
By J at 4:44 PM ON 06/06/09
Why are people complaining that this looks like BSG? Last time I checked, BSG was widely accepted (both by critics and audiences) as the best show that Sci Fi had aired in years. No, it's not going to be like SG-1 or Atlantis. So what? Why is change bad? I'm looking forward to seeing SG:U and judging it based on its own merits, rather than whining about how it's not SG-1 or Atlantis.
By mouth1776 at 5:09 PM ON 06/06/09
if thats the closest they can get to stargate action this is just sad
By Capconfed at 5:50 PM ON 06/06/09
I agree with you all, it looks way to much like BSG. I know that some people are down with that but I'm not. Is it to much to ask for action without the cussing and constant sex. That is what made SG1 and Atlantis good. I will give it a chance but If I hear frack all the time and some blond chick ackiting like a robot sleeping with people all the time I out.
By kev74 at 6:58 PM ON 06/06/09
I hate to join the crowd but I don't like the direction this show is going.
By wraithfodder42 at 7:29 PM ON 06/06/09
Yeah, I can see the Battlestar aspect of it in the camerawork, the darkness (maybe that's what mallozzi meant by that it would be dark - less lightbulbs!)
Anyway, the reason I liked Stargate, besides the actors and plots, was that it was positive. There are so many grim shows/movies out there, it was nice to see something more positive. yes, the SG shows could have used more depth, but the writers never did it for some reason.
Guess now since Scifi has lost BSG and SG, they're going to make Stargate Galactica to suck in both audiences ;)
By themeangel at 7:53 PM ON 06/06/09
This So does not look like a StarGate. Series.
I loved Battlestar.. But I loved Stargate sg1 first 8 years. and Atlantis.. They were 2 different types of shows.. Why did they not just keep Atlantis..
This looks more dramatic. Doom and gloom like BSG
They should have kept both
By paladin at 8:09 PM ON 06/06/09
Like others from what I have seen and read way to dark and serious. Appears to have too much "Galactica" for this SG fan.
By ghostmoth at 8:14 PM ON 06/06/09
I'm with Haggard01 and J, why so negative. You complain about TV execs canceling your favorite shows but so many of you 'cancel' them from a brief synopsis or a trailer. Why not keep an open mind, try watching it and then make a valued decision. And even if you don't enjoy it others might. I had no idea so many people in the scifi community had devolved. I love scifi--I'm just glad there's finally so much to choose from. SG:U is on my list to watch.
By witherstaff at 9:08 PM ON 06/06/09
At least it didn't turn into Stargate lost in space. I was half expecting a robot to go around screaming danger, danger. I'll give it a shot - there hasn't been much reason to tune into the channel recently.
PS. Why is the captcha so bad? If you fail to enter the right code give an option to try again, without having to redo the entire message!
By thanatos at 9:19 PM ON 06/06/09
More like 'Gilligan's Stargate' with Jamil Walker Smith as Gilligan, Brian J. Smith as The Skipper, Justin Louis as The Millionaire, Ming-Na as His Wife, Alaina Huffman as The Movie Star, Robert Carlyle as The Professor and Elyse Levesque as Mary-Anne.
By GrumpyOldMan at 9:20 PM ON 06/06/09
I don't really think it's negative or devolved to desire some kind of original programming on Sci Fi. No one's even calling for canceling, just saying they don't like it. Implying that people who don't like the new SG series aren't 'serious' sci fi fans just to try and convince yourself their opinions aren't valid doesn't really tell us why you think this new show has something to offer.
That being said, I'm quite surprised that so many people are tired of the SG series. For a series based on a single movie (not even a franchise) it has had an amazingly good run, surviving cancellation to become a franchise strong enough to spin-off from. Maybe it really is time to consider that this wheel has been reinvented one time too many. Even Star Trek tv shows aren't immune to cancellation or negative fan reaction (nor SW movies), why should SG get a pass? I was a fan of the original SG series, but I have been very disappointed by Atlantis and pretty much everything after the replicators. Even adding a quarter of the cast from Farscape didn't hide the fact that they had just run out of strong ideas. So personally, I think fans are right to be hesitant at the least.
Regardless, I'll still give the show's first episodes or two a viewing. The quality of a trailer is often only representative of the skill of the editor who put it together; anyone who has decided to see a bad movie after seeing a good trailer can attest to that. For all I know from the material they've shown so far, this could be the end of the franchise or the new footing it needs to keep going.
By Smoking Robot at 9:43 PM ON 06/06/09
We're not complaining that it's NOT SG1 or Atlantis. We're complaining that it IS BSG. 'Oh, this was a big success, so we'll do that now'. Painfully shabby is what you'd call that. Yes, I'll watch it, but I'm not optimistic.
By bl0ckh3ad at 9:50 PM ON 06/06/09
Fans have no clue whatsoever when it comes to judging shows before they air. They whined about BSG and lauded Dollhouse before those shows aired, and they were totally wrong both times. The more fans complain about shows, the better they are likely to be.
By abeery at 11:02 PM ON 06/06/09
I'm surprised no one has commented about how much the basic premise seems to be Stargate meets Strar Trek: Voyager... don't get me wrong... I actually liked voyager but I hope they don't ape it too badly
By Vince128 at 11:40 PM ON 06/06/09
Trust me... there are several SG sites with people who want to hate on that show saying that. Others say BSG, others say this, other say that. There is nothing in TV that is original anymore really. Still, that doesn't mean ti won't be a great show.
By XCalPro at 11:53 PM ON 06/06/09
Reminds me of the original Stargate movie with Kurt Russell... Much darker and grittier.
By OGRE3000 at 1:29 AM ON 06/07/09
Stargate Galactica? I didn't see anyone crying like an emo or a complete basketcase yelling, "Shoot me, shoot me!" Even the worst of SG-1 or SGA was better then EMOBSG, hell, Buck Rogers was better then EMOBSG...
By Thogar at 1:58 AM ON 06/07/09
It does look a lot different from the previous Stargate series, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. After so many seasons of the previous incarnations I think a change is good, but I also trust the producers are smart enough to sprinkle it with at least a little of the humor and camaraderie that made the others enjoyable. I'll watch every episode even if it's not as good because if it wasn't on the air we'd probably get more of ScyFye's original movies. I can't take any more giant snakes!
By Joe B. at 3:20 AM ON 06/07/09
I'm actually kinda worried about Lou Diamond Phillips being in it. He's been in so many low budget "B" Sci Fi movies over the past few years I've lost count. Can that bode well for Stargate Universe?
By Hmmm at 4:23 AM ON 06/07/09
What's wrong with StargateGalactica? After Atlantis, we need something like that. Finally an SG show that is as brilliant as BSG. Yes SG-1 was awesome, but I don't want to see the same show all over again..
By dsb at 9:31 AM ON 06/07/09
Stargate SG-1 = EXCELLENT . . . SGA = Lost pace - - almost as much as Star Trek DS9 . . . same parallel except on water in "Deep Space" instead of Space Station . . . SGU = SO MUCH like Star Trek Voyager premise it is EMBARRASSING !
So Disappointing . . . SciFi Channel used to have a killer line up on Fridays . .. I could not wait to see what they would grow into. . . . NOW they do more horror and ghost busting and reality crap . . . I rarely can say that SciFi has something good on.
PICK UP TSCC = = Sarah Conner Chronicles! It is "ready made" . . . story arcs FINALLY in place and good to take off.
By John at 10:08 AM ON 06/07/09
So what if it looks a bit BSG-ish? The producers are trying to avoid having it be a retread of what's come before. See a full episode before you condemn it.
By Halcyonn at 10:55 AM ON 06/07/09
I agree 100% with abeery. It's right out of the Star Trek playbook. It looks like the Voyager of the SG series & I'm completely ok with that. Voyager was my favorite simply because there were fewer rules. It was about survival and the times when you have to throw your morals out the window in order to get things done & deal with the consequences and that's what makes the shows interesting. If you liked either of the other two shows I think you owe it to the franchise to at least watch a few and let them develop the characters before you pass judgment.
By Celesto at 11:52 AM ON 06/07/09
looking forward :)
By Snowowl at 12:43 PM ON 06/07/09
I'm going to give it a chance. But that interview promo did reek of Galactica... a lot.
By Electric Blues at 1:02 PM ON 06/07/09
Is is that bad to have a serious sci-fi SG show? it reminds me of the first few seasons of SG-1. They were excellent! Gritty, realistic, exciting. You didn't think these superhero castmembers would end up defeating the most powerful beingings the galaxy has ever known without even takin a single loss or anyhting. Its just not enganging, not excitng. I want something a little more real, more like....hmmm.......BSG!!!
By raimond at 2:04 PM ON 06/07/09
I think a chance should be given. However, wasnt there a SG-1 episode 200 where they mocked the general sci-fi series creation and one alternative that was mocked was that "sci-fi" yes, but with a cast of really young (therefore unrealistic) actors... isnt this what is happening right now?
By sg-1fan at 2:30 PM ON 06/07/09
Big fan of SG-1. I agree that Friday nites used to be a must see. The garbage on now really sucks. I hated ST-TNG when it first aired. Couldn't wait for Picard to get killed off so Riker would take over. But then the actors eventually grew into their roles, acquired their own personalities. We need to give SG-U more than just a couple of episodes before we start acting like a bunch of bitchy little spoiled brats. Anybody agree?
By BlackJesus at 3:33 PM ON 06/07/09
Stargate was goofy, cheesy crap. This looks like it takes itself seriously. I'm looking forward to this. Hopefully they won't have any stargates in it at all. I was so happy to see those stargate shows go off the air. Despite the stargate name i think this will be a quality show.
By Quixote One at 4:39 PM ON 06/07/09
Come on, people, grow up. Yes, it looks "different" from the first two SG series. Why is this a problem? How about we all wait and actually SEE the show before claiming to hate it, okay? Most of you sound like the whiny basement-dwellers who were determined to hate Abrams' new take on Star Trek sight unseen.
Give it a rest, people. Some of us will like it. Some of us won't. But nobody can honestly praise or condemn this or any other TV show, movie, or other piece of entertainment without actually experiencing it first.
Also note that word -- "entertainment." To listen to some of the Abrams-Trek haters before the movie came out (and succeeded wildly!), you'd think 'old' Trek was their Holy Scripture or something. (Sadly, for some of them, it may be the closest to such a thing there is in their lives, but that's another whole discussion.) Some of you are sounding almost as bad. But Star Trek, Stargate, Star Wars, whatever -- It's just ENTERTAINMENT, people. Save this level of indignation and passion for something more worthy of it.

OH PLEASE!!! not another religious/political blending of socialist vs terrorist with SEX SEX SEX as the common lynchpin. Speaking of lynching ... if claudia black shows up PLEASE tote out the appropriate length of rope; to drag her out from under her boyfried & into the rafters where she has long belonged. Sci-Fi channel has been unable to dredge up original fresh concepts and dialog since the writers strike. Wish they would go back to human versus bug as in "Space - above & beyond" or the bad good guy anti heros as in "Firefly Serenity". While I like Lou Diamond Phillips his recent work has been all low budget sophmoric dialoged time wasters. Let us hope that efforts do not include a return to claymation, or more dumb flat backing robots with atitude. No doubt future laws will address issues re sticking human meat into non humans so SCI-FI channel needs to get that sick concept out of their childish programs.
By Quixote One at 6:03 PM ON 06/07/09
Re: afretired
Coherency in comments is also a plus. Bonus points also available for spelling. Please try harder next time on both counts.
I'm not sure where the 'religious/political blending of socialist vs terrorist' comes from in this discussion, and I'm not aware of any claymation, 'dumb flat-backing robots' or much of anything else in that rant being alluded to in anything seen so far with regard to SGU. (The one exception being that an appearance by the delightful Ms. Black is possible, I suppose. Suggesting that she should be hanged because you dislike her or her work is rather far out of line, by the way.)
(Note: If I'm interpreting the last sentence regarding 'meat' correctly, that's also pushing the bounds of not just tasteful commentary but also possibly the limits of what's acceptable content in this forum, but that's a judgment call for the management.)

Re: Quixote One
It's nice to see that someone can actually string together a few thoughtful, lucid remarks in response to the brain vomit of folks like afretired. I would respond to him/her, but you said everything I would have said.
By A.D. at 12:18 AM ON 06/08/09
And they couldn't have left Atlantis on to balance out the depressing dramatic look of this show...I've seen every episode of stargate so far, and I'm a huge Battlestar fan, but I'm getting tired of the dark, depressing survival stories...I like stargate because it is a fun show...If I want dark and depressing and bleak, I'll go watch the news and look at the economy...I want escapism...
By twill at 1:57 AM ON 06/08/09
I didn't think I was going to watch the show, and wish SGA had had one more season. I liked it alot. This trailer reinforced to me that I made a good decision. There is nothing about it that interested me. Too much dark angsty crap, shaky camera, emphasis on sex, no quirky humor, etc. Yup, just like BSG and I turned that off after 2 seasons when it became drek.
By twill at 2:01 AM ON 06/08/09
Just wanted to add that, had they kept SGA going for one more season, I probably would of kept the TV tuned into SGU when SGA was finished airing (good ol' SciFi Fridays).
So there might have been a chance that I would have been hooked and become a fan.
But without the SGA lead-in, I have no interest or desire to make the effort to tune into SGU. So they have lost at least one (I know, drop in the bucket) viewer to the fact that they cancelled SGA prematurely!
I still am very bitter about the cancellation.
VERY BITTER!
By G at 8:20 AM ON 06/08/09
OK it does look at a lot like BSG but really is that such a bad thing. My God it had been hailed as one the best shows made in a long time. So if it can come even close to that show then I'm in and ready to rock. SGU needs to be different or it will just get canceled like the last 2 show have. Don't get me wrong I love SG1 & SGA but I do want some thing new from this universe.
By PunditGuy at 9:53 AM ON 06/08/09
I'm pessimistic given what's been released so far, but the pedigree is enough for me to give it a shot.
I've got to say, I'm surprised by the hate here. Have the fine folks at SFC not been entertaining you for the past several years? If it's not to your liking, you don't have to take it as a personal affront -- just don't watch.
By suprememango at 1:38 PM ON 06/08/09
I agree it does sound BSG-ish but I will give the show a shot. I think they need some more action in the trailers though and hopefully a glimpse at the new major enemy.
By Kirk at 12:14 AM ON 06/09/09
I agree with those above.
It feels and looks like galactica.
But with a stargate name plate.
By margee55 at 3:46 PM ON 06/09/09
From the previews alone, I know that they should probably have named this as, "Stargate Universe as seen through the eyes of Battlestar Galatica writers". What comprised Stargate? Overcoming big time problems with a sense of humor and not wallowing in self pity. Darker they say, more drama. Doesn't that just mean listening to them rant and rave? Snivel and wail against the "outragious fortunes" I watched half the first season of Battlestar and realized I was in SciFi soap opera land. If I wanted to watch death, dispare and agony; I could turn on Shakespeare's Hamlet or any daytime soap opera.
By parkertom at 10:46 PM ON 08/24/09
What a shame. I really looked forward to Stargate Universe, but won't watch it. I absolutely despise the shaky camera. It may be a great new series, but I just can't handle the shaky camera, oh well, looks like SG-1 and Atlantis reruns will have to do.
