The first trailer has been released for Daybreakers, the vampire thriller starring Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe. Hawke portrays a researcher in the year 2019, during a time when a plague has changed most of the world's population into vampires.
As the human population dwindles, vampires hunt, capture and farm every remaining human in order to survive, or else must find a blood substitute before time runs out. But some humans won't go down without a fight ...
Daybreakers doesn't open until Jan. 8, 2010, but you can check out the trailer after the jump.
Written and directed by Michael Spierig and Peter Spierig, the film also stars Isabel Lucas, Sam Neill and Claudia Karvan.

Ya know, the studios always save their best stuff to open in January.
I'm just sayin'...

I loved Undead, so I have no doubt I'll enjoy this.

I'm actually sick to death (pardon the pun) of vampire stuff now because it's been so overdone in recent years, but this doesn't look too bad at all. I'm glad it's not just a knock-off of I Am Legend anyway. And interesting use of Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill"...don't know who this version is by though.

I agree w/ Madigan
This definitely looks entertaining, but after the slew of vampire and zombie films in the last several years (plus everything in between... I Am Legend, Mutant Chronicles) it's starting to get monotonous and diluted. After this I hope we get a break for a few years (but probably won't) because otherwise this sub-genre will start to lose its luster, and as much as I love vamps I'd hate for that to happen.

The cover of "Running Up That Hill" used in the trailer is by a group called Placebo from 2003.

I'm not sure how old this story is for this movie.
But this storyline seems really close to the idea of farming humans in the 'Blade' movies with 'I don't have to pay my taxes', Wesley Snipes.

Come on people - let us all tell the truth.........
There can NEVER be too many vampire or zombie movies!!!!

Because we live in a global world, and a PC world, the only villains we can kill and harass are: Vampires, Zombies, Aliens, and Robots. In other words, things that are not real have to be the villains. If not, some group will claim you are stereotyping or persecuting them. SAFE, to make these films, because no one's, or group, or nation's feelings will get hurt.

Got a 'Dark City" feel to it. I think I'm going to like this one.

I blame all the terrible vampire movies and novels on Ann Rice. A gay man trapped in a womans body.

Even with the great cast and great "what if?" concept, I can see why they're releasing this in January instead of trying to fight bigger movies during the summer.
I agree that there have been way too many Vampire movies recently, but at least this movie shows them for what they are, not shiny pale emo dudes that get chicks with daddy issues all hot and bothered.

Looks interesting...which is unusual considering the vampire genre has been mined to death (pun intended)...I'd much rather see a decent werewolf movie...IMO, there hasn't been one...ever...Underworld came close to what I call cool, but other than that...zilch.

I can't help but think they need to go to Japan meetup with the scientists who created True Blood. Other than that it looks pretty good.
