Got questions for SCI FI? You can ask an executive via Twitter starting today

Got questions for SCI FI? You can ask an executive via Twitter starting today

Got a question about SCI FI's impending change to Syfy or anything else? You can ask Craig Engler, senior vice president and general manager of SCI FI Digital, directly via Twitter.

Engler will answer viewer questions on everything from the upcoming Syfy changeover to current series production and other breaking news.

"Most networks out there are using Twitter strictly for promotional purposes," Engler said in a statement. "We're looking at it as a way give fans direct access to a network executive and at the same time provide them with a look at what goes on behind the scenes. We'll also be talking about our shows both on the air and in production, sharing news and answering questions via a special hashtag, #syfyq."

SCI FI will become Syfy on July 7.

What's Engler's Twitter handle?

By Mich at 6:44 AM ON 06/29/09

Nevermind. Apparently, it's @syfy.

By Koltan at 6:57 AM ON 06/29/09

SyFy, I like you. You seems, unlike other networks, really try hard to get closer to your audience. It's great!
The only thing I miss on SyFy is Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. With it you would become perfect.

By Kraven at 7:03 AM ON 06/29/09

Agreed 100% TSCC.....and Firefox would be awesome!

By Koltan at 7:49 AM ON 06/29/09

@knox, are you jealous? From which another network are you? )))

By Tomb at 8:12 AM ON 06/29/09

I agree with Kraven. They should stop using Internet Explorer and go with Firefox.

By rsatx at 8:15 AM ON 06/29/09

Are you going to start working some real science fiction into your schedule?

By Raimond at 8:28 AM ON 06/29/09

Yes, Syfy why dont you tell us that you wont pick up TSCC so that we can make a calculated decision about your fall programme.

By Fox Mulder at 9:06 AM ON 06/29/09

When is Caprica season 1 slated to start airing?

Thanks.

By grayone at 9:14 AM ON 06/29/09

SyFy is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. The new Stargate looks -terrible-. My plan is to stop watching the network and stop visiting the site until they decide this switch is the terrible idea that everyone else can see. Remember, SyFy, test audiences loved the New Coke. . . .

By Jimmy at 9:26 AM ON 06/29/09

Wow, what a bad idea. Consider the derision coming from viewers why would Syfy wants belabor this name change. If they're going to do it, they just to do so and forget about it. The name change is stupid, but it's going to happen.

By eowyn. at 9:27 AM ON 06/29/09

Only one question. When will you bring back Stargate Atlantis?

I'm not too proud to beg.

By photoguyryan at 9:34 AM ON 06/29/09

You cant even use your own message system? Thats cause you know your servers suck. it takes forever to post a comment.

Why does BBC america have better scifi programming than you??

By syfy <> scifi at 9:51 AM ON 06/29/09

Let me know when you start playing scifi related content again

By bob at 9:52 AM ON 06/29/09

SYFY - Only a lawyer would like that name.

By TauCetiPrime at 10:25 AM ON 06/29/09

Screw Firefox. With each new upgrade, there's something else that my system is incompatible with.

By Tekzel at 10:38 AM ON 06/29/09

Yea: Why the dumb name, and why the dumb programming? Are you TRYING to run off all your thinking viewers? Why do you hate us so?

By xGORDOx at 10:47 AM ON 06/29/09

This is simply a marketing ploy that will allow SciFi, er sorry, SyFy a label in which to copyright and profit from.
If a genre is called "SyFy" and NBC Universal owns that copyright, who gains to profit?
It's not just a name change, it's an attempt to rename a genre in order to own it.
I think it's a stupid idea and an even more stupid name.
Will I still watch the channel, of course.

By xGORDOx at 10:52 AM ON 06/29/09

I searched for both:

@syfy
#syfyq

on Twitter and there were no results. What gives? I wanted to see some of the questions.

By Shatterhand at 11:07 AM ON 06/29/09

Please, for the love of all that's good and holy, stop spending what money you have on those insipid, ludicrous original movies and work on acquiring the rights to some classic sci-fi television shows! You used to air some of the best science fiction in recent years back in your early days. It doesn't matter if you can get a lot of those shows on DVD now; not everyone can fork over $50 or more per series in addition to their cable channels. Show that you give a damn about your core audience and bring back classic sci-fi shows to your schedule! Even if you do it one night a week, that's better than nothing. You could even alternate once a show's episodes complete. There are plenty of shows to choose from:

(original) Battlestar Galactica (and 1980)
Buck Rogers
Space: 1999
Planet of the Apes
Quark
Logan's Run

that's just the 70's! Then you've got the 80's and 90's stuff, like The Phoenix, Alien Nation, Max Headroom, the Greatest American Hero, V....my god, the list goes on, and most of this is stuff you USED to show! Don't bury this stuff in late or early hour hell; bring it all back. At least your programming, if not that ridiculous new name, will keep you firmly where you belong.

By Joe B. at 11:31 AM ON 06/29/09

Yeah, I got a comment...has the idiot that came up with changing the name to SyFy been fired yet? When they do officially change, I urge fans out there to ignore the name change and still call them SciFi. I know I plan to!

By JJP at 11:36 AM ON 06/29/09

How much of your schedule will be based on true science fiction and genre type programming, and how much will be based on other programming. And what type of other programming will the new network be considering going forward?

By shayd at 11:46 AM ON 06/29/09

You know, I've got a spyder monitoring this (and several other Siffy related) thread(s), logging the updates and time tracking the removals. Ignoring the musings of devotees of George Carlin's seven forbiden words where the reason for removal is obvious, its actually quite factinating to see how quickly certain things get purged and what what the suits at NBS Universal don't want advertised on this topic.

And for the record, censorship (which admittedly, is their right given that this is a privately owned and operated server) doesn't change the fact that this "branding" effort is one of the most foolish, daft, silly, laughable, asinine, imbecillic, ill-advised, idiotic, boneheaded, crackbrained, fatuous, unintelligent, thickheaded, witless, stolid, dopey, doltish, mindless, puerile, ridiculous, inane, vacuous, vapid, and ludicrous ideas to hit this channel since its inception. You've found a great way to drive off Sci Fi fans in droves whilst making yourselves a laughing stock all at the same time.

May this name change bring you everything you deserve.

By tati at 11:52 AM ON 06/29/09

I have to question the comment that one of the execs made regarding SyFy as being the name of what they hope will be a 'lifestyle' channel (as opposed to a genre channel, I guess?)

WTF does that mean? What lifestyle? Are they hoping to be MTV, which used to be great when it was just videos but now is rife with inane programming? Or, maybe they want to be Lifetime with all its sappy programming or AETV, which used to air some rather good programs but has now decided it would rather have trash on the airwaves (except for The Cleaner).

The day is coming (for some, it's already here!_ when no one will watch any particular channel--we'll just find everything online and build our own playlists so we can avoid the utter crap that makes up most of any one channel's programming.

SyFy, chock full of pseudo-reality programming--for the same crowd that reads the Globe, no doubt.

By Timbo at 11:54 AM ON 06/29/09

eowyn

Stargate Atlantis series has been ended with a series. They moved on to making movies. There suppose to be one in the works. The series was canceled at 5 season and they planed to make movies like they did with SG1.

As for the name change itself, dont like and hardly these days Scifi has anything on it thats any good, they already killed the good shows. Stargate Atlantis, TSCC, Farscape and others. I dont have much of a reason to watch scifi channel anymore...or i should say Syfy...i will continue to refer to it as Scifi.... I will give the new stargate series a chance, but so far not looking all that great. Caprica pilot to me was rather dry and boring, may give it another chance but not holding my breath on it.

By Y4S at 11:54 AM ON 06/29/09

lol how much ya'll think Craig Engler get too much money. and shoud all be fire who came up with that sup name. imagine greater what a lie it's more like SyFy more commercials and still same old dumb programming from good old guys at NBC.

By Kongbooster at 12:12 PM ON 06/29/09

Did no one in corporate notice that the new name looks like an abbreviation for Syphilis?

By iwillHATEsyfy at 12:43 PM ON 06/29/09

Hmmm, i wonder if this twitter thing is an attempt to get more information about how stupid the name change will be. Well, i hope it works, and the "suits," as it were realize that they need to program scifi on their channel, not wrestling, and drop this whole stupid name change.

syfy - you'll stand to lose A LOT more money with the name change. don't fool yourselves into thinking that science fiction is something you can bring to everyone with a name change. because the programming will be of poor quality, and no one will liek it anyways, but also because science fiction is a GENRE. it is inherently supposed to be accessible to a subsect of the mainstream. you can't take a genre and turn it into mainstream. therefore, you will get no new "fans." what you will get is the abaondoning of all your core viewers. and don't think there won't be some smart people who'll make a new, different scifi channels and take away all those freshly available viewers.

By Casanova Frankenstein at 1:09 PM ON 06/29/09

My question --

Just how craptacular will SyFy be?

As someone pointed out above, this is destined to go down the ranks of bad decisions along with MTV ditching music videos and AMC ditching classic movies.

By tati at 1:32 PM ON 06/29/09

You guys must have missed the thread from when SciFi first announced the name change. There were more than 900 responses, IIRC.

I can't recall now but 'syfy' has some kind of derogatory meaning in the Polish language, too. SciFi said the name change will not happen in Poland, because of that LOL

By treqqer1 at 1:59 PM ON 06/29/09

Why bother? They're not going to listen to us anyway.

Changing to SyFy is deeply insulting and stupid, but they don't care - they're just going to do whatever they want for whatever stupid reasons they might think they have, and us fans can just go straight to hell.

So why bother?

By northholler at 2:44 PM ON 06/29/09

When are you picking up Virtuality?

By photoguyRyan at 2:48 PM ON 06/29/09

The name change is just part of something that the company started several years ago. To get out of the "SCIFI" business.

Now all the crap they show, ie ghost hunters, moonlight, scare tactics, those weekend "original" programming, "GAMER??!!", Freaking wrestling, Joan of arcadia??, and so much more, all fits, since its a lifestyle channel, and not a science fiction venue.

MAybe I should check out HULU, and see what they have on.

By ZannC at 3:41 PM ON 06/29/09

Have you gotten ANY positive responses to the name change??
I am curious what it means for programming... are you getting away from Science Fiction themed programming?

By Ryan3177 at 4:22 PM ON 06/29/09

In the switch, you guys should pick up TSCC. It would fit on your network very well and attract millions more viewers than some of your c-rate shows...

By starcluster470 at 5:06 PM ON 06/29/09

The whole thing stinks. The only reason I originally got cable was for the sci-fi network when they brought sliders to the channel. Now I'm done very sad LOVED the logo and the old programming of the SCI-FI channel.I'm only left with an old movie quote " They've finally done it,the've finally done it. Damn them all to hell." POTA see ya syfy.

By Lizj at 7:38 PM ON 06/29/09

Thank goodness for...BBC America.

The old old days are gone, apparently. And, no, it's not just the name, but the name change was like the nail in the coffin.

I can't think of anything to ask SyFy, except maybe....don't you have anything better coming that we don't yet know about?

Not 'rassling.

Not a soap opera disguised as a BSG prequel.

By realety at 8:23 PM ON 06/29/09

What day is this insult going to take place? As a person who grew up watching the SCIENCE-FICTION CHANNEL I would like to know exactly which day that I can stop watching it. It is the equivalent to New Coke. Hopefully all this will lead to will be the exact thing that Coca-Cola did, by realizing that they have made a huge mistake and go back to the original. And I saw this posted earlier but it was a great question, Have you actually gotten any good feedback on this action that you will be taking?

By tati at 9:12 PM ON 06/29/09

Well--unless I've gone blind, they have YANKED my post referring you all to the original Wire thread about the announcement of the name change--with over 1100 responses, most of which were negative.

http://scifiwire.com/2009/03/sci-fi-channel-to-become.php

Dear Moderator--hands off. You've got better things to do--like helping the writers research their articles. My link is to content on THIS site. I don't see the need for it to be removed.

By Westy at 9:20 PM ON 06/29/09

Definately agree with Joe B's comment :

Yeah, I got a comment...has the idiot that came up with changing the name to SyFy been fired yet? When they do officially change, I urge fans out there to ignore the name change and still call them SciFi. I know I plan to!

Additionally :
What a stupid Idea!!..... Sci Fi is a totally descriptive and appropriate name for the network. Why change what isn't broken? Bad move people. Seriously,You need to research this a least a little bit before you make the move. It's definately the wrong way to go people.....
Oh yea, what the heck is SyFy anyway...? Yuck!! Even looks sick.......

By a different tim at 9:39 PM ON 06/29/09

I just.... I just can't believe it's actually still going to happen. 1100 negative comments by all 1100 people that watch the channel and yet they still slap us in the face with this vulgar insult to our intelligence and the potential viewer's intelligence. It's takes a special kind of genius to do that, or special kind of idiot. Shame.

By msk417 at 10:59 PM ON 06/29/09

So where were the questions and answers? The article said starting today. So I posted a question, but did not see a single discussion from Mr. Engler. My question was a legitimate one about the possibilities of bringing Firefly back as a series of movies.

Please clarify the plan for the Q&A. How do we post questions. When will he answer them? Can we have a real dialog about programming? You are talking to your core audience here.

By Mandy at 5:09 AM ON 06/30/09

I stopped watching the actual channel when they didn't renew The Dresden Files. Who gets the rights to a New York Times best seller, lets it become number three on thier most watched shows for an entire year but then not give it a season 2?! What the..!?? When I saw Scifi do that I realized they were self-sabotaging.

By Browncoat at 7:58 AM ON 07/01/09

How bout you guys pick up Firefly again, Seriously one of the best Science fiction programs since the original Star Trek and it got dumped like yesterdays rubbish. Think about it.

By zerk at 1:53 AM ON 07/02/09

I just finished watching all 12 episodes of THE DRESDEN FILES on Hulu. What a great show!
Great cast. Creative and inventive plots. Very addictive. Please SyFy. Give this show a chance again!

By windnwar at 9:53 PM ON 07/02/09

Mandy, the nuts running this network have proven time and time again, its not about quality, its about profit plain and simple. They don't care what the fans like, actually the more we like something the more its likely to be cancelled. Atlantis on a season high ratings, Dresden files to be replaced with Flash Gordon that was one of the worst things ever, Farscape... The list goes on and on. In the place of great shows we have garbage like wrestling and ghost hunters, not to mention the d movie of the week.

They lost me from ever watching this channel again until they ditch the dumb name, and actually start running real SciFi programming again, and warehouse 13 doesn't count as real, its the same look and feel as Flash Gordon, in other words more trash.

I'm snapping copies of this page so go ahead and try and delete my post to censor me.

By spaceman42 at 1:48 AM ON 07/05/09

Why don't you have a program like Sci-Fi Buzz again?
It was good except in the last year it was on the SFC, the SFC management decided to run the show at 3:00pm EST on Fridays, (Didn't SFC management know or think that most of the viewing audience were at work or in school during this time?) and the repeats were at off hours during the weekend, making it hard to locate.
How about a return of Sci-Fi Buzz??

How about a show where would be G. Lucases,
Steven Spielbergs can show out their own little
films on the SyFy Channel?
I mean somebody from Nashville his own little sci-fi film he did on his computer or Mrs. Leary's
4th Grade Class Elementary School Project from Peoria, Illinois or a local anime club in El Paso, Texas showing off their little anime project.
Again, why not a program like this?
I know it would be successful.

Also, the show "Exposure" was good EXCEPT that the SFC showed it so late on Sunday night at 10:00pm EST(9:00 CST), and repeated it the following Saturday at 2:00am EST in the morning.
I know many viewers KEPT asking the SFC to PLEASE show "Exposure" much earlier in the evening. Instead a year later it ended being shown LATER at 11:00pmEST. It seems that the SFC had a good show and didn't want anyone to see it.

There was a TV show called "SF Vortex"..This was REALLY GOOD. There was one section in the second part of "SFV". Called "the War Room" segment, where actors ,producers, writers, TV critics, movie executives...sat around a table and discussed subjects in the media and movies like
why can't the studios make this film, or the future
of NASA, etc.
Many viewers asked the SFC.."Why not have an ENTIRE program like the "SF VORTEX War Room
segment?"
SFC management ignored the viewers suggestion, and what was worst is that SF VORTEX was suddenly canceled. I still kept seeing this show listed in TV Guide and cable book schedules over after it was taken off the air.

Another show that was on was "The Anti-Gravity Room" from Canada, this was really good. It seem to have a lot of good information and seem more geared to the audience of your channel.
But you canceled it after a year, in a phone conversation I had with the producers at the time a few weeks after it was dropped off the SFC, they producers said , "They never were given a reason or explanation why their show was dropped off the SFC."
I ran into somebody at a Anime convention recently from Canada said he ran into one of the producers staff of "Anti-Gravity Room", recently in Montreal. He told me that this person who worked on "AGR" said the staff after over 10 years still has not gotten an explanation for being canceled on
the SFC.
Also, a comic book artist sent me an email that he was interviewed on "AGR" and was REALLY hoping this interview on "AGR" would help his comic book artist career, instead he learned a few weeks later the show was suddenly canceled off the SFC from a posting that I put the in internet newsgroups, he said he was really upset about this.

ALSO:
Why not make the SyFy Channel more
accessible to the SFC audience?

Come on Mr. executive at SyFy Channel. Please pay attention to your fan base.

By Franklin1977 at 11:42 PM ON 07/07/09

Hey!!

I REALLY like the posting by spaceman42
on 7/05/2009.

He has some really good ideas and stuff as well
as insights of the science fiction fan community.

He seems to really knows his history and
stuff about the SFC and what they had in
the past.

SyFy Channel (now that they call the channel) should really listen to this guy.

Thank you "spaceman42" for that great posting here!!!!!!!!!

By Vegetta at 4:10 PM ON 07/08/09

SCI - FI was too nerdy and didnt jibe with Wrestling I guess... (Or women viewers)

Lots of women are sci fi fans , your development team needs sacked if they are unable to pull in that audience.

Oh Bring back the Dresden Files - I just don't get why you axed it since it was one of your more successful shows

By Xetelian at 12:53 AM ON 07/13/09

Its hard to want something so badly, and to see it disappear even when its said to be successful.

Dresden Files.

Bring it back, with or without the original cast. I'm a fan of the novels, the story idea, the setting. Bring this story back to syfy and keep the story going.

By Zolardo at 11:09 PM ON 07/13/09

Yes hopefully SYFY will do a smart thing for a change and bring back Dresden Files.

I have no idea whatever brain glitch made the Scifi management cancel Dresden Files unless they were worried they would get more market share then NBC... With the programming they had on then I watched Scifi more than all other networks put together. Not true anymore.

Crapola like ghost hunters, wrestling and worthless spacefilling junk abounds now at syfy....

Hopefully there is new management now at Syfy; Management who are actually science fiction fans and knowledgeable about the subject.

Guess there's always shows like Dollhouse on FOX until Scifi/syfy gets their act together again.

By LuvSyFy at 10:33 PM ON 07/15/09

I would really like to see Virtuality as as a series on SyFy. There is a whole in my viewing schedule without BSG that this would fill nicely.

By Kat at 4:32 AM ON 07/16/09

The Dresden Files: Why only one season? I have watched the 12 episodes on HULU, the show is awesome. Would love to see more of it. Am going to read the books, which most fans claim to be better than the show. There seems to be a large following of both the books and the show, if you take into account the feedback it's getting on the Hulu website. [p.s.] SYFY ? ! ? Well, it's your channel, guess you can call it anything you like.

By Moonmaiden at 8:10 PM ON 08/02/09

How do I find the schedule for the new syfy channel? My daughter is in Children of the Corn remake and I've been checking every month for it. Now everything is different.

By decora at 5:00 AM ON 08/24/09

I don't understand why Dresden Files was cancelled. I just discovered this show on Hulu and watched half the episodes straight through, and will watch the rest soon.
