Harry Potter publisher denies plagiarism allegation

\<i\>Harry Potter\<\/i\> publisher denies plagiarism allegation

Bloomsbury Publishing on Monday denied allegations that author J.K. Rowling copied "substantial parts" of a book by another children's author when she wrote Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the Reuters news service reported.

The book, published in 2000, was the fourth installment of the hugely successful boy-wizard Harry Potter series that has sold more than 400 million copies worldwide and been turned into a multibillion-dollar film franchise.

"The allegations of plagiarism made today, Monday 15 June 2009, by the Estate of Adrian Jacobs are unfounded, unsubstantiated and untrue," said a statement from Bloomsbury, which publishes Harry Potter in Britain. "This claim is without merit and will be defended vigorously."

In an earlier statement, Jacobs' estate said that it had issued proceedings at London's High Court against Bloomsbury Publishing for copyright infringement, claiming that Rowling had copied "substantial parts" of The Adventures of Willy the Wizard—No 1 Livid Land, written by Jacobs in 1987.

These people have been shot down before, back in 2004 if i remeber correctly. They couldnt prove that any text had been copied or ideas lifted in 2004, 2008, and they wont have any luck in 2009. having read many of the willy the wizard book excerpts provided on the website, it is neither a kids book, or something that a traditional, none vanity publisher would publish.

If anything, she committed plagiarism with the Crap that was and Followed half blood prince, given the alterations in Writing and inconsistencies to the first five books.. Along with the fanfiction that was posted 6 months prior to release under the same name and had several same sections, before it was removed for violating policy after 6's release. Goblet fit continuity of the priors and Phoenix. Gotten inspiration for 4, probably. After all, nothing is original anymore. you just have to spin it, make sense of the Continuity and have realistic characters. Really, those are the primary factors to a good read.

Ha! Harry Potter is nothing but a ripp off of Neil Gaimens 'Books of Magic' comics printed by Dc/Vertigo years before Harry Potter. If anyone should be sueing JK it should be Neil.

"Substantial parts"? The book was 36 pages long.

The HP series has taken a lot from a lot of sources; just like a lot of other series do. Plagiarism maybe, but definitely not original by any means

Of course she's ripped it off. That's all she does. She's taken a lot from the Lord of the Rings as well as Discworld. I haven't read any of Gaiman's books yet (I want to) but I'll believe it if someone says she's stolen from them too.

Sorry, I've read LOTR. I see nothing that JK ripped off, but some common fantasy elements.

I've also read Books of Magic. Only similiarity is the main characters are youth urban wizards who wear glasses and have owls. However, their personality are totally different, their worlds are totally different, and the story lines are totally different.

JK Rowling uses many common fantasy themes. This is not plagiarism. Nor is using such common themes being unoriginal.

This sounds as silly as the Nancy Stouffer accusasions.

Jeesus, wont they just leave this poor woman alone?!? For crying out loud, HP may not be the most original creation in the history of fantasy, but they are *her* characters. If anyone had a right to sue it was Neil Gaiman, but he didnt.

Just because there are similar elements doesn't mean she's read or even knows about ANY of the above mentioned works (Lord of the Rings excluded), though you'd be reaching to compare the two, other than they both are leading works of fantasy.

Yes, as a writer I know that multiple people can have the same idea on their own, even before anything is published.
So before you make an accusation of plagarism, make sure she even knows about the works, let alone has read them and so on...
It seems most of you don't even know what plagarism is! It's stealing someone's work and passing it off as your own. It is not writing something similar and then finding out someone else has written something else like it.
The things you twits are comparing are like saying the new Star Trek is plagarism from Star Wars. They have tons in common....but it's not.
Smarten up, people! Please! You sound so dumb!
