Heroes' James Kyson Lee fights giant space bugs in Star Runners

\<i\>Heroes\<\/i\>\' James Kyson Lee fights giant space bugs in \<i\>Star Runners\<\/i\>

Heroes co-star James Kyson Lee told SCI FI Wire that he'd never shot a movie in Bulgaria before, so when the opportunity arose to film the upcoming SCI FI Channel original movie Star Runners there, he leapt at it.

Lee plays Lei Chen opposite Star Trek: Enterprise's Connor Trinneer as Tycho "Ty" Johns. The two pals find themselves in deep when they come into possession of a mysterious crate and wind up crash-landing on a planet populated by killer bugs. Something of a cross between Pitch Black and Starship Troopers, with an injection of buddy humor, Star Runners premieres Saturday at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

SCI FI Wire spoke to Lee by telephone exclusively last week. The following are edited excerpts from our interview. (Spoilers ahead!)

What was it about Star Runners that you liked enough to slot it into your hiatus from Heroes?

Lee: We had a couple of months off from the writers' strike, and I think the schedule and timing happened to be right. And they said, "We'll be filming in Bulgaria," which is a place I'd never been to. And I said, "Why not? Let's do it." The sci-fi genre is fun, and, I think, first of all, I read the script and the script was good. With sci-fi films, they can be great or really campy. It's hit or miss. This script, ... Rafael Jordan, the writer, just did a really good job. I read it, and 10 pages in I was like, "Wow, I'm sucked into this story." The characters are fun, and it's a movie with a sense of humor, which I liked.

How would you explain the plot to someone?

Lee: Well, the tagline is "Two guys. One crate. A whole lot of bugs." That's a good [way] to capture it. I play one of two space bandits. We basically get captured, and part of our bail is that we have transport this crate from one planet to another. Now, being the troublemakers that we are, we end up opening it, and inside a package is a girl who's sort of frozen in cryogenics. She seems like an otherworldly creature. She can't remember who she is, why she's there, and the next thing you know we're being hunted down by all these bad guys. So that's where the story takes off. It's fun, man, I've got to tell you. It's got a lot of unexpected surprises.

As you said, there's a whole lot of bugs. What were you looking at? Was it the usual ball on a stick with effects to be added later?

Lee: Ah, nothing! That's the fun part. It was a whole lot of green screen. That's the interesting part about doing a movie with special effects and creatures that are added in later. You have to be totally committed to the scenario and be able to act against things that are not there physically. You have to think, "Oh, this will look like this. The fangs will be here, and the claws will be here." It took a lot of imagination. We talked to the director [Mat King], and we talked to each other, and I think they incorporated some of my reactions into what was happening, so that was good.

And how did you enjoy working with Connor Trinneer?

Lee: We had a great time. I think that's one of the things that pops out from the movie. I saw some of the scenes from doing [additional dialogue recording], and we have really good chemistry together. You had the friendship and sort of the two guys doing their shenanigans in space.

"Two guys, one crate, a whole lotta bugs".....seriously another alien bug movie? Oh well, its scifi, they dont listen to fans, I mean I guess there hasnt been enough people to voice out their requests for no more cheesy scifi D movies.

Amen RED... makes ya wonder if there is some small Kansas town full of Neilson ratings boxes making our decisions for us.

Cheapshot: Hey, I'm from Kansas! (smiles) We like smart sci-fi as much as anyone. If I see one more "SciFi channel original movie" with a one-word title and co-starring John-Rhys Davies...

What a minute, I happen to enjoy a good cheesy horror movie; probably more than a big budget one. At least you know what your getting and if it's descent; it's a pleasent surprise. I thoroughly enjoy Scifi Channel.

Sci Fi Channel Originals are the best! You can't beat a good cheesy sci fi movie! They're better than a lot of the crap at the theaters. They're fun to make fun during as well. Sort of like your own MST3000!!!

SQUEEEEE!!!

It's about time!!! What took so long for SciFi to air this? It's Connor Trinneer......so I'll be watching.

By Middleman at 12:35 PM ON 06/12/09

I'll give it a shot. It's got Trinneer in it and he had the best character in Enterprise.

Yes, indeed, if Trinneer's in it, I'll watch it! Just wish TPTB who make series TV would figure that out and finally give the man his own show.

By TOM RHODES at 8:44 PM ON 06/12/09

I WILL WATCH IT DEFINATELY. NOW IT HAS CONNER TRINNER IN IT SO I ASSUME IT WILL BE A GOOD SHOW.

By Lazloson at 5:16 PM ON 06/13/09

I can't believe I'm going to say this but it doesn't look that bad. I don't even watch SyFy anymore really but I might give this a try. Maybe they can turn it into a series if it's popular.

Look, I know these kind of movies have a fan base, but they make way way way too much of these things now. It be nice that out of all the crap they spew out, we'd get at least 1 good quality movie or mini series instead of the usual killer bees vs killer wasps movies....I mean is it so much to ask for at least one good movie or mini series every few months, you people get your dozen crappy D movies, and we get at least one something thats at an A level.....

By shulls at 3:14 AM ON 06/14/09

AT LAST! Hope it hurries up and comes to Oz! Connor is a great actor and I enjoy his work. woooohoooo!!!

By REDante at 5:59 AM ON 06/14/09

All I want is once in a a few times a year scifi comes out with something truly good, miniseries or movie. Now I know they have some planned out, the problem is these kinds of things happen only like once a year and then we get D movies once a week.
Right now theyre going to show the curse of King Tuts Tomb, its not even a scifi original, that was direct to dvd movie....

By SciFiamateur at 12:57 AM ON 06/16/09

Did no one realize that this was just a ripoff of Serenity? With bugs instead of Reavers?

By auntynyc at 8:31 PM ON 06/24/09

OK! I missed it! Now how do I get to see it. Will it be rerun sometime in the new future?
