Is the Terminator film franchise terminated? Star Christian Bale had something to say about it today.
While doing press a while back for Terminator Salvation, director McG and his screenwriters Michael Ferris and John Brancato kept teasing that they had ideas for two more sequels to make a new trilogy. Of course, they would never presume to discuss specific plotlines before the audience gave them the thumbs-up that they wanted more.
Then Salvation opened to a lukewarm reception and saw its box office plummet in its second week. The expected announcements of Terminators 5 and 6 have not come. Yet.
Now Bale, who played a grown-up John Connor, confirmed that there has been no development on his end for a fifth Terminator.
"We've had no talks about it or discussions about it," Bale said at a press conference in Beverly Hills, Calif., today to promote Public Enemies. Perhaps McG did not get the pat on the back he was hoping for from the audience?
Still, this is the kind of franchise that signs actors for multiple films, especially A-list actors in starring roles such as John Connor. Bale indicated that his involvement was not contractually guaranteed. "It all purely depends upon script," Bale said.
Terminator Salvation took place in 2018, when Connor takes the lead in the human resistance while trying to come to terms with a new kind of cyborg who believes he is human. The film's epilogue suggests that Connor will continue to lead the resistance in other parts of the world after destroying Skynet's San Francisco headquarters.

I think Salvation was good enough for a sequel, and maybe a trilogy. I liked the movie and how it fits into the overall Terminator story...

TS had a great sense of adventure (maybe more than the first three). I've seen it twice now. The first time it didn't work so well for me because I kept trying to fit it into the context/formula of the first three, but it has a completely different structure to it. The second time I knew what to expect and I loved it! It really works best as something NEW and different, hopefully the beginning of a new series of films. The first three really worked well together as a three-act story arc, with the third act playing out as the "reluctant hero's journey". If you try to think of TS as the direct sequel to T3 it doesn't work quite well, and I think this is one reason why it didn't do so well. But there's still hope..... it's doing well overseas and there still plenty of time to make more money (T3 didn't do as well either if you can recall)

Forget McG's vision. Toni Graphia and the crew on TSCC did a far better job. It's insulting than anyone would ever consider not giving them the reins for a series of movies that could be quickly produced -- perhaps one every 6 months. Wouldn't that be cool?
By Cheapshot at 6:59 PM ON 06/22/09
TS was... ok. I enjoyed watching it, but lasting impressions? I would go see another Terminator if made. Its an action flick with a big budget, and I'm a guy. A reinventing would be in order perhaps.
By jedimom at 8:05 PM ON 06/22/09
TSCC was superior to Salvation in writing and direction, we could have had 5 YEARS of TSCC with the budget Salvation had.....maroons...WB should do a Firefly style movie for TSCC ...THAT would make some coinage....

Chronicles is over rated. tired of hearing about it. it's been canceled, get over it .
By Muldfeld at 8:18 PM ON 06/22/09
wookiee, I'm tired of hacks like McG get all the money for bad work when there are underappreciated writers like Toni Graphia that care to stretch the boundaries of Terminator in dramatic terms. I think it's still salvageable.
By Ruffles at 8:24 PM ON 06/22/09
The people I went with to see TS all really enjoyed it.
I was expecting it to suck with all the bad crap people were saying about it but I really liked it a lot and would love to see more of them.
By Paul at 8:33 PM ON 06/22/09
TS was a good movie and I'd pay money to see another one like it.
By Tarc at 9:02 PM ON 06/22/09
Fantastic! Let the tired, vastly over-wrought premise of the show die down. The first movie was classic, but the subsequnet movies couldn't do much with the limited premise. Bad and lazy writing killed the rest due to the inherent escape clause - time travel - written in. Trouble is, no one that penned for the series was smart enough to be able to actually write a time travel series that was even slightly coherent. TS was just bad... bad acting and a bad script. The entire ending was ludicrous. I'd be happy to see this series die.
By Bobanort at 9:09 PM ON 06/22/09
Wookie, people used to say the same about Futurama, and guess what?? It's coming back on comedy channel. The same with Star Trek because the fans wouldn't let it die.
I personally didn't care for TS. Probably wouldn't waste the coin on another film.
By Jred009 at 10:05 PM ON 06/22/09
I didn't really care for Salvation. They need someone with some decent writing chops to write another if they do. The guys who wrote Catwoman don't really count as decent writers. And as for Tscc? I'd definitely take it over another hollywood blockbuster. Will it come back? I don't know. Probably not. Though I'd rather have a TV series that changed the status quo than a movie series that keeps hammering away at the same thing over and over again.
By Beldaran at 10:24 PM ON 06/22/09
People, please stop looking for deep thoughts in these movies.. They are action flicks, nothing more. TS and TSCC were great and I'm sorry to see them go by the wayside. They entertained. They were never trying to outdo The Great Gatsby in any way, shape or form.
Cheapshot, I'm a girl and I too love big budget baction flicks. Can't wait for Transformers 2! :)
By Farview at 11:54 PM ON 06/22/09
I thought the actors were good and that they had a good storyline. I just think the direction was really bad. Dump "McG" (hey dude, why don't you use your real name?) and do a better job on the next one.
By Marty B. at 11:57 PM ON 06/22/09
Bale himself killed this movie. Not only his performance as Connor, but the fact that the script that got greenlit had Bale in the pretty awesome and under-explored Sam Worthington role (c'mon this is the guy that teaches Reese the shotgun lanyard trick). Connor was a distant basically messianic "legend" figure on the periphery, until Bale has a powwow with the powers that be and says, "You know, I think I want to play this Connor guy instead." Bam, rush rewrite = bad script = bad movie.
Anyone else think a better movie could have been made had Bonham Carter' terminatrix type character maintained her compassion from pre-judgement day. I don't know if we'll ever know, but I got a hunch in the early draft her division of Cyberdyne becomes aware of the Skynet plot and actually sent Worthington into the future (cryogenics or they figure out a time machine) as a forlorn hope effort make amends for their company's A.I. transgressions.
Can the McG haters tell me what he did wrong. It's easy to blame the director, it's hard to do in a way that shows you know anything about what bad direction is.
By wookiee at 12:02 AM ON 06/23/09
muldfeld/bobanort i didnt express any opinion about salvation. im just tired of the whining about sarah connors do you really think whining on a blog is gonna bring it back? as for "hacks" getting to make movies, welcome to Hollywood. terminator was never intended to be a dramatic story. sci-fi action.
By Marty B. at 12:07 AM ON 06/23/09
Yeah, wookie, "sci-fi action" centered around the conception of the savior of mankind. Come on, even the original wasn't a pure shoot 'em up videogame. It's the human element Cameron gave to his characters in Terminator and Aliens in addition to special effects wizardry that made those films what they are. Unfortunately, (though that's got nothing to do with the latest Terminator iterations) it seems to me Cameron's kinda pulled a mini-Lucas over time, gradually easing off on the human storyline in favor for Bayesque set pieces and technological virtuosity.
By starkiller at 12:33 AM ON 06/23/09
I liked Terminator Salvation, it was a good movie, just bnot really a blockbuster. This movie has been doing much better in other countries. I think it still has legs, but not as much as TSCC, The Sarah Connor Chronicles is really popular all over the world, too.
operationsavesarah.freeforums.org has it's first podcast up and the next one planned, there are also fan campaigns gearing up to get the show back.
Will you join us?
By Roman at 12:45 AM ON 06/23/09
McG belongs on the list of directors in Hollywood that should not have a job, among other hacks like Bret Ratner. Well, there's always music videos! LOL!
By zzbickyzz at 1:09 AM ON 06/23/09
I got an idea for Hollywood - get ORIGINAL!
Stop ruining the 80s.
By zzbickyzz at 1:14 AM ON 06/23/09
Stop creating so many timelines, TSCC works best because it picks off where T2 ended.
Perfect, one timeline and less confusion.
By Scott at 1:38 AM ON 06/23/09
Wasn't there a story on Wire a couple of weeks ago about Terminator 5 taking place in present-day London or am I misremebering things?
By Red Mask at 5:27 AM ON 06/23/09
You want Salvation? It comes in red, blue, and gold! Terminators vs. KIKAIDER!
In FULL COLOR!
By oddball at 5:52 AM ON 06/23/09
I wish you people who go on and on bout the tv series would shut the hell up already.
TS was a mixure of good and bad. It had it's dull moments, crappy characters, but also had its adrenaline pumping action scenes. I seen it twice, but I knew what to expect from reading nearly every possible spoiler online. I hope they do make a sequel, but hope even more if the T3 writers are ever replaced.
That's the reason TS didn't do so well is becuase of T3's fault. Most people won't go see a sequel to a movie they thought sucked because most likely the next one is gonna suck too. Just wait til it's on dvd I almost bet that the rental rate will be off the charts.
By the way the same writers who wrote TS was the same who did T3 (besides the addtional elements Jonathan Nolan provided, which wasn't much) If they ever want a Terminator movie in the future to stand well in the box office Michael Ferris and John Brancato have to be replaced.... No Exceptions. And by all means don't be stupid and hire some moron who wrote one of the tv series episodes.
I say hire Johnathan Nolan (full script full time) with his brother Christopher Nolan to add in the realism elements. And hire either Christopher Nolan, Peter Jackson, or pay a huge amount of money and drag James Cameron back onto the project. Just as long as Cameron doesn't get stupid with it. I know he created it and all, but noone wants him to go in and start changing stuff that don't need changing.... Like trying to make another present-day movie when we are in the future with these.
Just get new writers and I think 90% of the population will be happy.
By Wookie at 8:40 AM ON 06/23/09
Wookie - Did anyone really think all the letter writing campaigns to save Star Trek would do any good? The next thing we knew there was a space shuttle named "Enterprise" and we had Star Trek: The Motion Picture in the late 70s. If you want a change, you have to be heard.
By Bobanort at 8:44 AM ON 06/23/09
Sorry Wookie - the last entry with your name was me. Goofed up when I was typing.
By Jac at 10:46 AM ON 06/23/09
Don't need to see it.....now I know how it ends. Didn't Sci-Fi decide to get in the habit of warning spoilers?
By suprememango at 10:55 AM ON 06/23/09
Oddball - a Nolan Terminator. Suh-weet. Best idea yet.
I saw Terminator. I liked it but wasn't blown away like Star Trek. I was expecting way more John Connor, who was very much a supporting character, and was wondering why they were focusing on the Worthington character. Mind you, the Worthington character was super cool. I think I will better enjoy a second watching.
The action scenes were pretty thrilling but the plot could have been better. I think there will be a 5 and 6, but I suggest better writers. There's a lot of potential there and with Bale as Connor as well.
PS yes, I loved TSCC and was sad to see it go. But let's try and focus people. We're talking about the movie here.

Eh. It was better than T3, that's for sure, but it never seemed to know what it wanted to be and frankly, John Connor was in entirely too much of the movie, but didn't really do anything.
By JIMJAM at 7:27 PM ON 06/23/09
I love the Terminator franchise!
Even if the 3rd one wasn't the best it was still ok.
Salvation was much better than the 3rd one. It lacked a little character depth and it has some other problems but I am dying to watch it a second time now that I know what the problems are I can focus on how awesome everything else is in the movie.
I also like TSCC but i think its a different thing altogether and its done... for now...
I Think it would be a huge misstep to not continue the saga or to reboot. TS while not perfect was a step in the right direction. To not continue that direction would be a mistake.
By thunderstormer at 2:00 AM ON 06/24/09
Well, I liked the movie and would see a sequel. I think, though, that it helped to read the prequel novel, because it gave the characters background and depth that the movie couldn't due to all of the action.
I really liked TSCC too, and I think that if the studios really wanted to keep the Terminator franchise going successfully, they should have cross-promoted. Sure, they're very different in concept and presentation, but a lot more could have been done to keep fans interested in both products. A missed opportunity, for sure.
By tana at 6:38 PM ON 06/24/09
I would like a few more based around the cyborg (you know that little girl stole one of the borg's power supplies)...so bring it back with sam worthington as marcus wright not with christain bale.

I loved salvation and i like Bales connor well enough hope they make alot more movies
By jackwillkillu at 3:53 AM ON 06/30/09
I thought Salvation was bad-ass and I was a big fan of T:SCC. I thought they should have had a Derek Reese character in Salvation, fighting with his bro, it would have been cooler than the mute kid and a nice nod to T:SCC fans without raising two many questions about Timeline discrepancies. I liked the first two movies the best, like everyone, but I love to see new stories and explorations into the Terminator universe, not less. I only hope the next one is R-rated and maybe has some stuff from Skynet's point of view and more kills from the Terminators' HUDs. Salvation was a great start, and I'm excited to see where they take it from here!
Why some people want the franchise to die is beyond me, just because a new one came out doesn't delete the original. Don't buy the Blu-ray and STFU right?
I thought Bale was a great Connor, much better than the other adult John from T3, he sucked. But if Bale isn't John Connor I'm sure they could get someone else, he's been 4 or 5 different actors already so that really shouldn't be a show stopper.

Roddenberry is gone his wife Majel is gone , only a few Great sci fi people left.
James Cameron Must revive the series and interweave Tscc and finish what has such a strong future being left unfinished .
The Cameron /alison of palmdale charicter: Summer Glau .
that series needs to be finnished in some way. Either by way of movie or bring the series back. i think a lot of people would like to see more of the human side of Cameron/ alison , lots more action , a little release , of emotion and you have somthing for everyone. If someone dosent write this i will!

TS was a top movie for action fans alike. It was enjoyable as the storyline was so different to the concepts before hand as the first 3 movies had the same story as each other. TS was a very human story. Although I dont see it as the sequal to T3, we need one that blends from T3 to TS... I was made up Arnold wasnt in it too due to his age now.
By Loco_Motive at 12:11 AM ON 08/28/09
I do not know but you might correct me on this:
Was T3 a repetion of T1 & T2 in a sence of chasing here an there? Wouldn't have been better to focus more in what was the Skynet balagan?
I really really liked T1, its concept of time travel and AI. But T3 let me down and TSCC had too much that they could not even handle. Am I the only one feeling that is something missing from the original T series?
By scifi_fanatic at 6:28 AM ON 09/28/09
I totally agree with most of you. I think the writing needs to improve for T5 and T6. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed TS but i found myself liking Marcus Wright's character more than John Connor's I feel if they somehow brought his character back to be a major character in the sequels might to the possible sequels some good just my opinion. As far as the TSCC i love that show I love anything about the Terminator but I think to make the storyline survive you need the movies but with much better writing.
