Watchmen's Jackie Earle Haley, who co-stars in Fox's upcoming series Human Target, told reporters that he is excited but nervous about the idea of taking on a television show in addition to playing Freddy Krueger in the upcoming Nightmare on Elm Street remake.
"A little bit, from the standpoint that it kind of takes me out of the game," Haley said in a group interview last Thursday on the Chicago set of Nightmare. "But it takes me out of the game by being in the game."
On Human Target, Haley plays Guerrero, adviser to Christopher Chance (Mark Valley), a bodyguard and detective who adopts the identity of his clients when they are targeted for assassination. The show is based on the DC Comics series created by Len Wein and Carmine Infantino.
Haley said he was looking forward to the challenge of acting on an ongoing basis. "The TV series, I'm really excited about that," Haley said. "It should be a real fun kind of throwback to '80s action films, like Die Hard and stuff, and kind of the weekly action show of the week."
What about his character? "What's cool about it is that it's a different type of character," he said. "And I'm also kind of really looking forward to acting every day for a period. I think it might [help] as an actor to grow, and a way to become a better actor is to work in that environment and to work every day for months. It could be a really good experience as an actor."
Human Target launches at midseason with a preview between the NFC Divisional Playoff Game and the premiere of 24 on Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

I remember Jackie as a child actor of the 70's. The long haired skinny kid that often looked like a white trash burnout made a name for himself in many memorable films. Then he disappeared. Now he is back, a lot older but sounding wiser so, to see him come back at his age is a real achievement in my book and I am glad to see more of him now. I just wonder if he gets noticed as "Billy" from Damnation Alley these days.

Having seen clips of "Human Target" pilot, I'm confident that this show will be off the air fairly quickly unless massive changes are made. Therefore, Earle's revived career should be intact.
Also, doesn't Earle have a more high profile career than either of his "Human Target" co-stars?

WHAT CAREER?
By DarkHawke at 5:10 AM ON 06/16/09
Yeah, Haley's "career" currently consists of exactly ONE role in which he was wearing a full-face mask for half the movie. This is a smart move, as well as becoming the new Freddy Kreuger.
I've seen those clips, too, Rafe, and I'm curious what "massive changes" you think are needed. Looks pretty damn good to me. You think there's not enough or do you think it should be dumbed down for greater TV longevity? ;)

DarkHawke, you must have missed Haley's Oscar-nominated turn in "Little Children" a few years ago. That was truly his breakout role after almost twenty years of absence. He's a talented guy, and certainly not *only* known as Rorschach.

How could you forget his phenomenal role as a burned-out hippie waiting for his paycheck in "SemiPro," and his breakout film "the Bad News Bears" as a cycle riding, cigarette smoking baseball phenom? Screwed by the academy, if you ask me.
How long before the brainiacs in Hollywood put him together with Mickey Rourke in some remake of a movie that had no business getting a remake. My guess is within the next 2 years, along the lines of a bromance like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, along with (insert random has-been actress here).

I think he struggled for so long he should look for any "permanent" work he can get. A TV show fits into those parameters and he still has NOES. Also, for those saying what career, he was nominated for an Oscar a few years ago.

HELLO, did no one see the Oscar-winning movie Breaking Away, in which Jackie starred? His breakout came in the 70's. Sheesh.

BTW, try looking at the actual category for which it won an Oscar: Best Screenplay. That has nothing to do with JEH's acting ability.
His personal Oscar nomination? Playing a sex offender living with his mom surrounded by unhappy and dysfunctional members of families in a suburb. Real stretch for the Academy to like a role like that.

Even before Bad News Bears he was a voice actor for the adult cartoon Wait Till Your Father Gets Home. It was like Family Guy way before its time.

Wow. Too bad I'm not a veterinarian, because this is the biggest collection of jackasses I've come across in a long while, and I'm betting y'all need your rabies shots. Jackie Earle Haley is a VERY TALENTED OSCAR-NOMINATED ACTOR. If you're envious of that fact, Jamal D & DarkHawke, I'm sad for you, but TOO BAD. Go buy a life at Kmart before they sell out. If you can't see that fact, McGurk, then you are NO judge of acting talent. PERIOD. Go back to your exciting day job and remain the Never-Was-So-Can't-Be-A-Has-Been that you were born to be. Haley SHINES in everything he is in, and he will continue to do so as long as he is acting, whether it's in movies or TV.

For such a sweet handle, Candy O, you come off as quite bitter. I'm not insulting the man by any means, rather just stating the truth. You know as well as I do that in Holly-weird, you're only as good as your last big hit, and if it's been more than 5 years, you're a has-been. I loved Haley in Watchmen; both him and his character were the only saving graces in an otherwise pedestrian affair. And no I wasn't aware of his past work, save word that he was a child star who hadn't done much since then.
So are you good friends with him, Candy? Is he family or something? Otherwise I have no clue why you decided to jump down my throat feet-first with combat boots on because of someone you likely don't know and have no affiliation with beside seeing his work. Chill out, you'll live longer.

Upon the surface, it almost seems Mr. Haley is giving up a film career for a TV one. But then, there is some background about him that must be considered.
When he faded from the spotlight suddenly in the early 80s, he literally disappeared. For years he lived in San Antonio where he made local TV commercials and wedding videos. He also took many odd jobs to support himself and wife, including delivering pizza.
But during all of this, he never became very bitter and he never sunk into the life of a former child star addict or criminal. He looked back at his old days fondly, and simply accepted that he was in a new stage of his life, and make the best of it.
Now he brings tha wisdom with him, and is playing his career wisely. He knows he is not a leading man, but a small role type that is brought in to steal moments from the rest of the cast. (Little Children, and the upcoming Shutter Island). Otherwise, TV is going to give him steady work, and his proffesional attittude, will only strenghten his reputation as a very hard working actor.

Wow. Put him in the ranks of Nicholson, Hoffman, and Brando, I guess. You sure told me, CandyO.
If you really want to choose an actor from the 70's that made good off of a pretty lame start, try looking Sean Penn's way.
An my rabies boosters are current, for the record.
