Joss Whedon: Who will return, and who might not, to the Dollhouse

Joss Whedon: Who will return, and who might not, to the \<i\>Dollhouse\<\/i\>

Dollhouse creator Joss Whedon told EW.com that he is two weeks into breaking stories for the Fox sci-fi series' second season, having wrapped his top-secret horror film The Cabin in the Woods on May 29.

With one season under their belt, Whedon and his writers "understand what works, and what didn't work so well, or what we weren't so thrilled about," he told the site. "We don't have the onus of trying to be a big hit sitting on our shoulders. We can just be ourselves. And so the stories we're breaking are pure, and exciting, and everybody's on board in the room, and it's never flowed better."

Whedon added that season two will pick up not with the Alpha storyline, but a little bit later. (Alan Tudyk, who has scored a role on ABC's midseason series V, may not be available right away, but Whedon hopes he'll be able to use the character at some point.) "Alpha will always be a part of the equation," he said.

Whedon added that he's also hoping to work out time-sharing with the producers of ABC's Happy Town, which nabbed Amy Acker, aka Dr. Saunders/Whiskey.

What about Summer Glau, Whedon's former Firefly/Serenity co-star, who is now free from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles? "We're still breaking the episodes," Whedon says, "but we didn't honestly go into the season going, 'Now, how can we figure out how to service Summer?' when we already have a huge ensemble. I adore Summer, and she's phenomenal, but I have to service the cast I have first. If something comes up that's good enough, my God, I'd hound her. But the rumors of her becoming a big part of the show are greatly exaggerated."

Dollhouse returns in the fall.

Please just let this show die. It was extremely poorly done and get back to making Firefly.

By stormsfury at 7:53 AM ON 06/12/09

OMG! People need to back off and get a life, it is just a TV Series. I will say that the first couple of episodes were a liitle rough, but I have a lot of faith in Whedon's ability. He gave us Buffy and Angel which were excellent. He even gave us Firefly that was great on DVD and at the movies, but thanks to FOX was a poor TV Series. Dollhouse did get better about midway through the series. I cannot wait to see what he is going to do in season two. All series are not for everyone, so to the people that loved the series keep on watching, and those that hated the series, turn the channel.

There are going to be a bunch of new scifi/fantasy choices for fall and mid-season, but most of them will die, like they always do.

Dollhouse was good--not great, but good enough to keep me watching every week. I'd rather have it then have nothing at all.

I hope what Fox learns from this is to finally leave Joss alone. Over and over I see people say the first episodes were bad, but it got better halfway through. Joss had very little to do with that. That's because Fox dictated the content of the first few episodes, then, when the audience reaction was similar to the reaction to the Fox-dictated first episode of Firefly, they decided to back off. It they had never interfered i with either series n the first place, Firefly might still be running and/or Dollhouse would have been much more popular.

It doesn't matter one frakkin' iota what they do with Dollhouse - NO ONE is going to watch it! The only reason ANYONE watched it last year was because it was on after The Sarah Connor Chronicles. With Fox having idiotically cancelled the far better TSCC, there is no worldly reason for anyone to waste their time on Dollhouse.

One last time: Sci-Fi (or Sy-Fy, whatever) PLEASE do whatever you have to to pick up The Sarah Connor Chronicles!! Lately you've spent WAY too much time on wrestling and ghosts and other irrelevant felgercarb. Here's a chance for you to rehabilitate your Sci-Fi (not Sy-Fy) cred and cement the loyalty of about 4 million fans at the same time!
For heaven's sake, it's a total frakkin' no-brainer!!! WAKE THE HELL UP!!!!!!

By zosolias at 9:38 AM ON 06/12/09

So, we're losing alpha and whiskey, two of the more interesting characters, but there's no room to "service" Summer Glau?

Hrrmmmm

By ComplexedOne at 9:47 AM ON 06/12/09

To all of these people who are claiming that TSCC were so amazing and never should have been canceled, where were you on Fridays? To busy to support the show that you claimed to love and now you're all pissed that it was taken away. TOO BAD! Stop trying to make other people as unhappy as you are by claiming that the shows they love suck when you don't even watch them and as such, you simply do not know.

Oh, and stop looking to SciFi to save your shows. It's not like it is their job to save failing sci-fi shows. Every time a genre show get cancelled, I hear these pleas of "Save our show". It's not going to happen! Stargate SG-1 moved networks! I really can't think of a time the great SciFi angel saved the day for some show and I don't expect them to. Let shows die and see what comes next!

By MattP at 9:51 AM ON 06/12/09

Amen to everyone calling for a stop to the Dollhouse-hating. Fox execs messed with the show and it got better when they stopped. TSCC got two years to prove itself and did not. Why won't you extend the same to Dollhouse?

If you don't like it, don't watch it. But don't be a dick about it.

By defender at 11:27 AM ON 06/12/09

I didn't like Sarah Connor but I did give Dollhouse a chance and I started to like it after the first few episodes. By the middle of the season I was hooked on it. I think that by the end of the season it was very good and I'm happy it is coming back.

By Noneofyourbusiness at 11:37 AM ON 06/12/09

We're not losing Whiskey, he made that clear in an earlier interview. If necessary, they would offer Amy Acker whatever to be available when they need her.

By SparkleHorse224 at 3:35 PM ON 06/12/09

I loved Dollhouse - interesting plot, great cast, Whedonish enough to bring in people who don't necessarily bow at the Jossaltar. Can't wait to see what's coming up next!

By jedimom at 3:52 PM ON 06/12/09

they should have saved TSCC , Sarah Connor Chronicles blew the boxedprettybaribies show away!!

Josh Freidman is awesome and Joss Whedon is frankly a little too full of himself when his work in this show is a huge disappointment..

By JD at 5:04 PM ON 06/12/09

@jedimom Whedon is full of himself? I think he would mock you for that and then degrade himself just to prove you wrong. The only way he'd be full of himself would be because his fan have built him up that way. Just because you're bitter that your show was crappy and boring doesn't mean you need to take it out on one that is obviously superior. Seriously, where would TSCC have gone? To the apocalyptic future. Boooorrrring. We've seen that a billion times. Give me a break. Dollhouse is a unique premise with a lot of leeway for direction. It could literally go anywhere. I started on TSCC and got bored, though I thoroughly love Summer Glau (but let's give her a normal part for crying out loud, how hard is it to play a robot?)

The fact is, the better show survived. Quit being childish 6 year olds and tearing down everyone else's fun because your miserable. Go away. I repeat. GO AWAY.

By Leis at 5:53 PM ON 06/12/09

"I really can't think of a time the great SciFi angel saved the day for some show"

Then you haven't been thinking too hard...Sliders. Mystery Science Theatre 3000. And (though my memory might be failing me here) didn't Poltergeist: The Legacy also have another season on SciFi when Showtime dropped it? You're making it sound like SciFi has never, in their history, picked up a show that was cancelled, and agreed to let it continue with new episodes.

By mattcoz at 5:55 PM ON 06/12/09

Forget Summer, when are you going to bring Jewel into the show? She's free now that Atlantis is over.

By zosolias at 8:30 PM ON 06/12/09

Better yet, let's bring back Firefly!!!
Firefly, and Serenity, were probably his best work...

By Rufus at 8:50 AM ON 06/15/09

Hey tregger1, exaggerate much? I watched Dollhouse after I bailed on Sarah Conner and I’m going to watch Dollhouse when it comes back. Just because you want something to be true doesn’t mean it is.

By Tim at 1:23 AM ON 06/19/09

Frankly, SCC bored me to death. The premise is tired, and the lazy writers just keep using the time jumps to resolve sloppy writing and the deep flaws in a think storyline. Dull, dull, dull.

OTOH, Dollhouse - episode 6-12 - was a pretty damn brilliant sci-fi show. Interesting, a little shocking, well written, well-acted, and usually at least a little thought-provoking. (Some to think of it, that might be while American audiences were lukewarm... TV that required braincells is a new animal).
