Evan Rachel Wood, who is playing Mary Jane in a musical stage adaptation of Spider-Man, told reporters that the company is ready for rehearsals: All they need is a lead actor. Once he's cast, the show is ready to go.
"We're still looking for our Spider-Man, but it's going to be incredible," Wood said in a press conference on Monday in Beverly Hills, Calif., where she was promoting the comedy Whatever Works. "I just spoke with [director] Julie [Taymor] today, actually. It's going to be a crazy rock 'n' roll circus show. Julie's doing what she did with The Lion King to this: She's just taking it to a whole 'nother level."
While the Peter Parker role is still up for grabs, the role of the Green Goblin is locked. "Just wait until you hear who's playing the villain," Wood said. "I know, and I wish I could tell everyone, but it's going to be good." Alan Cumming has reportedly been in talks for the role, but Wood did not confirm that.
Wood has been working on the play from its development, but official rehearsals will come later this year. "I did the workshop, and I worked with U2 and Julie and learned the songs and stuff, but we don't start rehearsal until October," she said.
Spider-Man opens on Broadway in New York in 2010.

Am I the only one who cringes everytime they hear about this?

No, I cringe, too. On the other hand, Evan Rachel Wood IS pretty cute....

If she's playing Mary Jane, why haven't they announced that? Everytime Julie or the production crew do an interview, they shy away from the question of ERW playing Mary Jane, yet she keeps going out and doing these interviews, saying she has the part. Why did they do nationwide auditions for Mary Jane in March, April & May if she already had the part?
