Primeval cancellation confirmed by ITV

\<i\>Primeval\<\/i\> cancellation confirmed by ITV

BBC News confirmed a rumor that ITV has canceled its sci-fi series Primeval after three successful seasons.

Starring Ben Miller, Douglas Henshall and Hannah Spearritt, the show followed a group of scientists studying prehistoric creatures.

"High quality drama remains a key part of the ITV schedule, although our current focus is on post-watershed production," ITV said in a statement.

The show had an average audiences of about 5 million this year in the United Kingdom. The figure was down from around 6 million for the first two series.

Typical. Genre series are usually the first to go.
I know it's a business decision, but they could AT LEAST do one more show to wrap it up. Instead, they leave us hanging, no resolution to the series 3 cliff hanger. Just typical... ITV = Fox? You decide.

By James at 12:52 PM ON 06/16/09

I'm not too surprised...to be honest, I didn't like where the 3rd season was going, and the overall cast changes.

By asocalguy at 12:53 PM ON 06/16/09

What "watershed" are they talking about?

By Springer at 1:06 PM ON 06/16/09

The watershed is the British TV term for shows after 8pm on Pay services and 9pm on regular broadcast TV. Shows after this time can show a more adult content ie: nudity, or swearing.

By PhantomsPhan at 1:13 PM ON 06/16/09

In the UK, post watershed means after 9:00PM. After that time, the restrictions on swearing, sexuality and nudity on broadcast television are relaxed. I guess it must be more profitable for them to make more 'Secret Diary of a Call Girl' and sell it to Showtime, than to make a so called 'kiddie show' and sell it to Sci-Fi. Even though the last season wasn't as good (especially without Cutter), its still a shame to lose a decent genre show like this.

By 13th Cylon at 1:22 PM ON 06/16/09

It was a good concept but frankly the writing was sloppy and very predictable.

By numberxl5 at 1:26 PM ON 06/16/09

I wonder if ITV realized that the ratings were down a million due to the fact that they played season 3 in the Spring instead of the Winter when seasons 1& 2 played, during which time only hardened football & rugby fans venture outdoors?.

By Paul at 1:58 PM ON 06/16/09

Really a shame to let this one die, especially without wrapping it up. Who knows, maybe they'll do a (tv) movie in a couple years. Although Primeval has its flaws I enjoy(ed) it.

By Sara at 2:15 PM ON 06/16/09

No wonder. Series 3 was rubbish. Primeval died along with Cutter.
I don't think they ratings would have been better if they'd air it another time of year.
You can speculate "what would have been if......" as much as you like but it won't change the fact that 5 million was too less for ITV (BGT got 19 million, so no wonder that they cancelled Primeval).

By Vonether at 2:17 PM ON 06/16/09

So let me get this straight, Primeval gets the axe for being too wholesome, but Torchwood gets it's teeth pulled so it can be a midseason substitute for Dr. Who?

By Jaiage at 2:31 PM ON 06/16/09

I'll be the first to admit that the series was going downhill since Cutter left, however it still is a great series involving heavy dramatic scene tied in with scifi elements. I for one will greatly miss it. Its difficult to find quality scifi programming.

By davidh at 3:10 PM ON 06/16/09

I LOVE THE SHOW, BUT WITHOUT CUTTER, THE BALANCE OF THE SHOW NEVER RECOVERED, I HAD HOPED THAT THEY WOULD BRING HIM BACK AND RESOLVED SOME OT THE PLOT LINES, LIKE HIS BITCH OF A WIFE HE HAD AND THE ARTIFACT THAT THEY F0UD , PLEASE TELL ME THAT WE WILL SEE THIS OR THAT A MOVIE OR SPECIAL WILL BE MADE TO DO IT

By Scotty at 3:39 PM ON 06/16/09

I agree that series 3 was not as good as 1 and 2, due mainly to the fact that Douglas Henshal(Cutter) decided to leave the show.
But, for pity sake at least FINISH it ITV!

By LadySwan at 3:50 PM ON 06/16/09

I am currently watching the 3rd season on BBC America. I am not surprised of the cancellation because it is not the same without Cutter. The last two episodes were good and let the remaining actors step up but it's missing something. It is a shame because good scifi dramas are hard to come by.

By Photoboy at 3:55 PM ON 06/16/09

This is no surprise at all. ITV produce utter crap, like "Britain's Got Talent", so naturally cancelling quality programmes is top priority for them so they can carry on churning out mediocre crap like The Bill, Emmerdale, Coronation Street, etc.

I can't believe they've been begging for some of the BBC's license money when they produce such utter crap.

By Disappointed at 4:43 PM ON 06/16/09

Season 3 provided a lot of disappointments for me. They rapid cast shuffle (especially losing Cutter), but mostly the idiotic writing. The actors did what they could, but most of these episodes left me with multiple "WTF?" moments. The worst, of course, being the mold episode. Regardless, I will still miss it, but I won't miss the writer(s), who should go back to shuffling coffee.

By Charley4fun at 5:09 PM ON 06/16/09

This sucks. I was bummed when Cutter was killed off, and after Saturday it looks like Lucy Brown is done too. I watch it on BBC America and have loved the show since it started. But after reading that there is a cliffhanger at the end of the last episode I would think they would resolve it with at least a TV movie. So much for a movie set here in the US. I guess that idea is over. But I will miss the show and wish the cast all the best luck in their next projects.

By rick1976 at 5:15 PM ON 06/16/09

This is a total line of bull. Why is it that when a show the whole family can enjoy it does not seem to last. My son who is 8 years old would jump for joy when Primeval was coming on. Why does everything have to be cut short before its time. Losing Cutter was a total bummer but hey it takes time to reshape a show after losing the main character. It does not happen over night.

By Scott at 5:16 PM ON 06/16/09

Well, that stinks. Hopefully,we'll get more someday...

By defiant at 5:53 PM ON 06/16/09

Give it to the scifi channel and bring the actors and writers

By sroughb at 6:01 PM ON 06/16/09

well some of us enjoyed the series for a while. It would seem that nothing that supports an audience is supported by networks either there or here.

By biodredd at 6:08 PM ON 06/16/09

I don't understand the reasoning in a message posted above. Why would the cancellation of Primeval have any effect what-so-ever on a theatrical film being produced by Warner Bros? WB is shooting a film for a world-wide audience, not just 5 million eyeballs in the UK. This decision by ITV in no way what-so-ever has any affect on whether or not WB proceeds with a film based on Primeval.

By yobeeone at 7:45 PM ON 06/16/09

Looks like I'm in the minority. I think season 3 was even better than the first two. Hated to see Cutter bite the dust, but I really like Danny and liked the direction the show was moving.

I can't believe they axed it. After all, how many shows are there that you never know when they'll knock off a main character? I love it!

By jade at 8:37 PM ON 06/16/09

I really hate when good shows get cut off that that.
No resolution really pisses my off. mainly its fox now itv. When will stupid people stop canceling good shows?

By scube at 8:46 PM ON 06/16/09

Maybe SciFi can pick up series 4 and wrap up the series. It would be the perfect fit for the station. I saw that series one and two were on a few weeks ago.

By marquis at 9:13 PM ON 06/16/09

cutter's acting was absolute crap. he had a blank expression and a wide eyed one and that was it. in the episode where he has a zombie type double i had issues figuring out which was which. dreadful.
the danny quinn character injected some new lfe into i thught. hope they resolve the cliffhanger as they managed to resolve the main story arc.

By lfhlaw at 10:12 PM ON 06/16/09

I enjoyed the series, but I was wondering where the series was going with losing Cutter, Lucy Brown. By losing Cutter, you lost part of the mythology. And really it was difficult to do a wholesale cast change. I was like ok. Danny and the Security guy kinda have similar roles. And the female scientist...i'm not sure...I guess mythology again? to leave us hanging was bad though. Hopefully some kind of movie to finish it off.

By DJ Jarak at 10:18 PM ON 06/16/09

Arrrrrrrrrgh!!! This canceling of good shows fetish has really got to freak'n stop!

By divephotog at 2:03 AM ON 06/17/09

Yes, it started well, and is finishing poorly, but just as well... The writers were trying to portray the danger of what they were doing by killing off Cutter and others, but the reality is that viewers ar not reality based, and like their lead portrayls. Don't mess with a good thing when it is going well is the motto of all good shows, and those that do not heed this are doomed (as born out by history). - KH

By gixer at 6:29 AM ON 06/17/09

An attempt was made to get another channel to share production cost, even SciFi was approached but there was no takers. For all its faults it was one of the few programmes in the UK that catered to a family audience and was made as entrainment.ITV now want more after the watershed programmes which means we lucky chappies in the UK will have more I'm a celebrity fat Big Brother cook on ice ballroom dancing camp get me out of here type programmes to look forward to.

By Fanboy79 at 9:52 AM ON 06/17/09

When Cutter and Claudia/Jenny left I started to lose interest. I haven't watched any episodes after that. I'll finish watching them eventually but I was very disappointed. I really like this show though and would have continued to watch it despite the casting changes if they brought it back for a fourth season/series.

By Daniel at 12:33 PM ON 06/17/09

In my mind, losing Douglas Henshall was comparable to losing Richard Dean Anderson in Stargate. Ben Browder was capable, but the backbone of the show was O'Neill. It's the same with losing Cutter- the heart of the show is now missing.

By jfam54 at 2:01 PM ON 06/17/09

You could see it coming. Take a series that had decent CGI and a good premise. Add characters that get the audience invested in the series. Kill off the characters (Steven, Cutter) and then have other characters quit (Claudia/Jenny) so that you no longer care if you even watch anymore = Cancelled series.
Hopefully this is not a formula that other BBC series will follow (oh yeah, Robin Hood did the same thing.)

By zathras at 2:24 PM ON 06/17/09

Well, as an American viewer who's been watching the first season of Primeval on the SciFi channel, I guess I need to decide if I want to continue watching, considering I now know that some of the main characters leave the show and the entire series has been canceled (apparently without any good resolution).

Sigh. It's Sarah Connor all over again.

By pukabird27 at 11:54 AM ON 06/18/09

NO primeval is my favorite show even after cutters death danny quin has replaced him (I LIKE QUIN BETTER)but the cliff hanger i need to know what happens to quin! abby and conner too they finally got together!ITV your throwing away your ONLY GOOD SHOW! if primeval is cancelled i wont have a reason to watch ITV! i even supported the show by buying dvds, figures and other stuff I WOULD HAPILLY MAKE A DONATION TO SAVE PRIMEVAL!or you could open a donation fund many people would donate and you could raise money to make the show! ill sit here and write for years as long as you make primeval series 4&5 then ill be fine with 5 series!3 is too little and you made it a cliffhanger just one rap-up show like abby conner find the device helen dropped open anomaly to quins time and get him out that would be fine just please bring back primeval! my entire family watches it and loved ALL 3 SEASONS and hopefully well like 4&5 too!

By Portnoi at 12:32 PM ON 06/18/09

Season three was a vast improvement on seasons one and two, even with the loss of major characters. It transitioned brilliantly with fresh story angles and excellent special effects. So disappointing!

By burntToad at 10:16 PM ON 06/20/09

My wife and I watch the show every week with out fail. We know the flaws exist, but it's fun entertainment. It's all about the bottom dollar these days and to hell with the fans. Bad charma to the ITV people.

By Norman at 8:05 PM ON 06/23/09

Yeah I suspected as much. When a show starts to lose main characters it's never a good sign.

By cat1 at 10:05 PM ON 06/25/09

the uk sites tell of a rumor that there will be a US version. There is also supposed to be a movie....maybe they will wrap things up in that.

By Chachalaca at 9:56 PM ON 07/11/09

Just learning of the ITV cancellation. Having seasons 1 and 2 on SciFi (now SyFy) and season 3 on BBCAmerica has made teevee viewing most pleasurable. I would be surprised if an American production of the teevee series would be as good as the original. I would like to see a feature film of Primeval but it could just as easily be as disappointing as the two X Files films have been. I'll have to buy the DVDs and watch them over and over on Fridays and Saturdays.

By Josef at 9:49 AM ON 09/20/09

Maybe the SYFY channel will buy it and keep the series alive like they did when they bought STARGATE SG1 from SHOWTIME. which went on for another 10 years!
