Two years after Marvel Comics knocked off its famous star-spangled superhero, Captain America is returning better than ever, the New York Daily News reported.
"The original Captain America is finally coming back," Marvel Comics editor in chief Joe Quesada told the Daily News. "We've been patiently planning for this moment for two and a half years."
Captain America will return next month in a five-comic book series, "Captain America Reborn."
Captain America was gunned down on the steps of a courthouse 68 years after creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby introduced Steve Rogers—a scrawny kid who is injected with a "Super Soldier" serum to fight the Nazis—to an adoring fan base, the newspaper reported.
There's still no word about how creators plan to bring Captain America back to life.
Marvel is planning to a feature-film adaptation, The First Avenger: Captain America, for July 22, 2011.

FINALLY!!! Enough said.

I stopped reading comics several years ago, only because I don't have room for them in my apartment. I'm glad Captain America is being revived. There are some comic book heroes who should be eternal. Captain America is one of them.

Place your bets here:
A. It was all a dream
B. It was all a set-up to divert attention away from him
C. He comes back from an alternate universe

Of course.
No one stays 'dead' in comics. Jay Garrett and the rest of the JSA... Barry Allen... Superman... Jean Grey... Didn't even Peter Parker find out at one point that he was a clone?
Ahh, comics.

or
D. The Super Soldier Serum is Spirit/Octopus-class and Cap is essentially immortal.

I know no one stays dead, but they should have kept him on ice longer than 2 years.
By thanatos at 7:30 PM ON 06/15/09
I guess Steve Carrell is going to have to give the shield back...
By PALADIN at 7:32 PM ON 06/15/09
I`m glad Cap is coming back....
My bet is that Nick Fury had a Life Model Decoy take The Hit for Steve Rogers and Steve has been working under cover on some intrigue or another.
Whatever.
I generally feel irritated that comics play fast & loose with Mortality so often ( ruining the effect of so-called 'message' deaths like Captain Marvell`s failed battle with Cancer)...
But this is one instance where I am glad that DEATH is not a permanent thing in The Marvel Universe.

Thanatos, I think you mean Stephen Colbert.

While it would be cool to see Steve Rogers back as Captain America, Marvel did not give the new Cap any time to establish himself. It seems like a typical Marvel move, completely non-commital about any major change they make.
Remember, the last time they back-pedaled like this, we got Spider-Man: One More Day.

Wow. What a squandered opportunity. I'm not going to rant about just how lame comic book deaths are in the first place -- I'm well over THAT and accept it as par for the course. However, if you're going to play the death card, at least make it INTERESTING and don't insult the audience. Steve Rogers has been Cap FOREVER. Why not let someone else take the mantle for a while -- let a talented writer develop a new character for a few years before handing the mantle back to Steve? They could've at least waited until the movie -- a great marketing opportunity -- to bring him back.

It's about freaking time. When they killed him off I stopped buying any Marvel comics. His death was the one thing they should have never done. They better make his return believable.
By Virgil's Diner at 10:49 PM ON 06/15/09
It bothers me when death is treated as a marketing ploy. It was pretty much clear from the get-go that Steve Rogers' death wasn't permanent, so why invest emotionally in it? At least DC isn't even pretending that Bruce Wayne is really dead. And just how many times has Jean Grey died in the past decade?
By Kalcean at 12:13 AM ON 06/16/09
its a clone body created by the red skull. not sure how they'll handle the memories though, if at all. could be they make it "see the light" but i remember seeing a clone of cap created by the skull not too long ago in teh comic , and that he hadnt been unleashed opn the worl. personally, i like the stuff theyve been doing with the current cap (buycky/winter soldier) and am continually insulte dwhen they kill of a character for a good cuase only to ruin it by bringing them back in some bs way later, thereby ruining the sacrifice

darn.. I liked Buckycap.
bringing people back just makes there deaths meaningless!! grrrhhhh. first dc brings barry allen and superboy back and now steve rogers. I swear i'm getting fed up with comics.

Or E: The Scarlet Witch wrinkles her nose and decides that Captain America should be alive again. Or maybe it's a repercussion of Spider Man having made a deal with the devil.Yet another boneheaded decision from Joe Quesada. I agree with Virgil's Diner....it cheapens death when it's just used as a marketing gimmick, only to be undone a couple of years later. All those tearful memorial comics commemorating Captain America....all invalidated by Marvel's revolving grave door.
By THAT'S IT!! at 1:33 AM ON 06/16/09
I am over it! Marvel is the 80s DC comics of today with their messed up storylines that need a "magical" fix just to wipe the slate clean to fix their issues. Steve should stay dead. And also say no to that "One more day crap" Massive changes in the life of a major character that affects the lot of the marvel history continuality and everything stays the same? Crappy writing if you ask me. Leave Rogers dead. Just like Spidey outing himself to the world, it was a powerful moment and now you just say, "Oh, we were just kidding". Crappy writing ...

Reminds me of Jason Todd. I'm glad I stopped reading Batman about 15 years ago; when I recently heard that they 'revived' Jason Todd I was stunned; his death was supposed to be permanent, to make a point. The basic problem though is the readers - we stop reading the comic and the writers are forced to go back to the original character to try and revive interest. Much like Cap's imminent return, does anyone believe Dick Grayson will be Batman for very long?
By Grimjackal at 10:17 AM ON 06/16/09
Anyone else ever wonder why his chain link armor was never upgraded to a similar material as his shield? It's been awhile since I've read comics, but I seem to recall Tony Stark made a vibranium replacement shield for cap's adamantium shield awhile back. It would solve the bullet to the head scenario.
By Damn you Marvel! at 11:41 AM ON 06/16/09
Start a petition to keep BuckyCap.
There's still a good few years for exploring him.
By kenjidsl at 12:10 PM ON 06/16/09
Back during the Civil War comics, Cap met with Zemo of the Thunderbolts, and was given a temporal key. So at some point after Cap was shot and before he was announced dead at the hospital, it's possible a wounded Cap escaped in time and switched with a future corspe of himself.
By Lordmoon at 12:45 PM ON 06/16/09
BuckyCap is going to keep the mantle. Steve Rogers is going to comeback as… NOMAD!
Yeah, the whole show and dance that was The Death of Superman pretty much ruined any serious impact that any future death of a (mainstream) comic book would make. We all know that next time Professor X or Colossus or Punisher or pretty much anyone else dies it’s just a short time before they comeback.
Character deaths is the main reason why I generally tend to enjoy the more self-contained stories such as Walking Dead, Sleeper, Fables, Y: The Last Man, and others like it a lot more.

Bucky/Winter Soldier-Great character, good stories, compelling persona.
Steve Rogers-Captain America
Putting Bucky in the Cap uniform made for some interesting stories but he never resonated as CAP.
Cap has to be more than a flag, shield and red, white and blue costume.
He has to be the man that superheroes with far greater power than he will ever know will listen to and follow into battle.
The man that led the super heroes during The Secret Wars.
The guy that looked an Infinity Gauntlet empowered Thanos in the eye without blinking as he met his fate.
The man who even anti-authoritarian characters like Wolverine and The Punisher respect enough to take orders from.
The man who is the only mortal worthy of lifting Thor's hammer (even though it was very hard for him to do so.)
Bucky/Winter Soldier is many things and a very good character...but he is NOT that man. He is not, and never COULD be, Captain America.
Sure, his shiny Cap uniform looks nice and picturesque and makes for great illustrations and paintings....but the guy inside of that costume is NOT the greatest superhero in the MU.
I think even Bucky would admit that he doesn't have what it takes to fill that costume and carry that shield. I think Bucky would be the first guy to say 'I was only doing it to honor Steve's memory becuase the world needs Cap.'
Now that Steve will be back, the world HAS that Cap.
I just hope they don't screw the faithful over by making him a 'Dark Avenger' or some crap like that.
Steve needs to come back and lead the MU out of the mess that's resulted from Civil War, Secret Invasion and Dark Reign. He's the only one that can. And we ALL know that Thor, Iron Man, Spidey, Wolverine and all the rest will be right behind him when he leads the charge.
People say it's 'too soon.' I say that since killing him off was a boneheaded move to begin with, Steve's return couldn't come soon enough.
And screw the new costume for Steve. He didn't need it for the better part of the past 68 years (minus the fifties and early sixties.)

crazyokie, with Jason Todd's resurrection, it was worked in that he did in fact die, but the effects of Infinite Crisis, which restored (sort of) the multiverse, brougth him back to life; but as such, he was effectively an anomoly in the universe.
It's hard to say what the future of Dick Greyson as Batman will be; because we DO know that Bruce Wayne isn't really dead - they've made it clear that something else happened to him and that it's not a question of if he'll be back, but when (though the only the readers know this)
By Rob at 6:28 PM ON 06/16/09
The word is out. Cap originally died in issue #50 of the previous series. This is the Cap that is coming back. The Cap from this series that was killed in #25 was an LMD.
By Sanity Assassin at 10:05 PM ON 06/16/09
Pretty stupid and predictable from Marvel. I love Steve Rogers as the Cap, but dead characters should stay dead.
