Review: How Transformers morphed into the lousy Revenge of the Fallen

Review: How \<em\>Transformers\</em\> morphed into the lousy \<em\>Revenge of the Fallen\</em\>

Where can you go after you've made the ultimate male childhood fantasy? Obviously, the next natural step is to completely overdo it and blow it all.

When we liked Transformers, we gave Hollywood carte blanche to do another one their way. To quote a superior blockbuster sequel, perhaps it's not the sequel we want, but it's the sequel we deserve.

Review: How \<em\>Transformers\</em\> morphed into the lousy \<em\>Revenge of the Fallen\</em\>

As if they need a reason to bring transforming robots back, they make it a point to explain that new Decepticon forces go after the remaining piece of the Energon cube. The Autobots try to stop them and Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) is busy going to college. He's even distracted from Mikaela (Megan Fox), who loyally waits for him on webcam. Then Sam inherits old Cybertron code that will help the Autobots stop the Fallen from destroying earth's sun and blah blah blah.

Come on, just make the robots fight again!

Before it gets there, the film wants to philosophize on humans' capacity for violence. No, dude. You're the giant robot fight movie. Also, by specifying that we are in the real world of President Obama, the film implies that Obama hands control to the military as soon as giant robots show up. Is there a secret right-winger in Hollywood, or just irresponsible scripting? They did go the extra mile to ADR a swine-flu reference in, so someone is trying to be hip. Not as hip as those "urban" slang-talking Autobots though.

The silly new characters of college web hackers (not bloggers, as far as we see in the film) seems like an attempted love letter to the community who try to scoop each other on Transformers movie news. Or maybe this is just what they really think of us—I mean them.

The movie blatantly rips off classic sci-fi films ranging from Star Wars, The Matrix and Alien to Total Recall. Come on, not like giant robots are 100 percent original or that this isn't based on pre-existing material, but did they think the audience for this movie wouldn't recognize H.R. Giger imagery or nose probes? Okay, the nose probe might be a reach on my part, but the "Emperor" type is no coincidence.

Notice I haven't talked about the robot fights yet? That's because they suck! They even blew the robot fights! They're just so busy there's no awe or wonder. Blowing them up on IMAX doesn't make them more intense. The film does not use IMAX to capture a mood or tone, as The Dark Knight did. It's just bigger.

Hard to believe that a film about giant destruction suffers by getting bigger. Even with a few graceful parkour moves and some fun scale with Optimus Prime standing next to international artifacts, Revenge of the Fallen has lost the fun of Transformers. It's mechanical, pun intended, going through a plot that doesn't matter to get to visuals that are not impressive.

I knew from the moment that they said that Epps was a CMSgt that this movie was doomed.

By DEATH at 7:17 AM ON 06/24/09

Seriously Sci-Fi? Trying to take the high road and pan ROTF? Ludicrous from an orginization who's staple is crappy c movies with bad effects, reality shows about things tha don't exist, Wrestling and do I even need to mention the change to SyFY?

You have no credibility to talk trash about a decent summer movie and a great sequal. There were autobots fighting Decipticons with the help of humans. If you know the franchise and have seen the cartoons and comics this is what Transformers is. Everything isn't going to be the Dark Knight.

Seriously? You and Roger Ebert and everyone who wants to seem cultured and intellectual can suck it while ROTF makes 3 or 400 Million from those of us loyal to the franchise who they MADE THE MOVIE FOR.

By Mechanimorph at 7:18 AM ON 06/24/09

D'oh.... now I'm totally worried about Star Trek 12..... the same writers are going to be responsible.

By vulcan at 7:20 AM ON 06/24/09

Why does everyone think Shia Lebouf is so great?

By GQ at 7:29 AM ON 06/24/09

Another bad review of this movie. I cannot understand why some people actually liked it.

By Mara Jade at 7:31 AM ON 06/24/09

Thanks Fred for your opinion and review on the movie, but I think I will still CHOOSE to go see it.

By Rick at 7:58 AM ON 06/24/09

Oh man, I can't wait to see this now! Everyone is on the slam train and I'm sure some of it is deserved, but I'm betting this movie will be nowhere near the mega-disappointments that Phantom Menace and Crystal Skull were. It's funny how reviews really only come in two flavors anymore: gushing love letters or desperate-to-be-clever pans. Apparently, nothing in between those two extremes exists these days, eh?

That said, I'll see it and if it's truly terrible, I'm ok with that. I'm not married to any movie.

By TaisiN at 8:02 AM ON 06/24/09

I second that DEATH

By mdg76 at 8:06 AM ON 06/24/09

OK..... Correct me if I'm wrong here. It's a summer, eye candy movie about giant robots blowing each other up. Did anyone honestly expect it to be an Oscar contender???!? It is what it is... A fun summer movie where you leave your disbelief in the car on your way into the theater. I can't wait to see it tomorrow!!!

By manco at 8:10 AM ON 06/24/09

All I get from your review is blah blah blah. This isn't news not in the official sense, more like a ten year old child's blog at any random site. Its Bull@#$% by Fan boy ranting and whining about nothing of any importance. I haven't even seen it yet this ...review makes me want to see it even more. Thanks SyFy. (dumb name change by the way.)

By red12 at 8:13 AM ON 06/24/09

It is kinda sad actually. I know writers of film and tv have a hard time of it with a subject like this. I am sure they had a wonderful idea and script of how they wanted the sequel but once the studio got thier hands on it well lets just say what the studio wants the studio gets, of course i am sure even Mr. "More Explosions the better the movie" Bay had his input as well that makes this excellent franchise of movies die of mediocrity. There is a rich history to Transformers that Hollywood could have used for the sequel instead it has again utterly raped something that could have gone on for more sequels.

By abfalter at 8:27 AM ON 06/24/09

There was no explaination of "How". Re-read the title of this article then re-read the article. Quite a mismatch. A better title would be "A Short Rant On How I Did Not Like The New Transformers Movie".

By MattMiracle at 8:48 AM ON 06/24/09

I saw the midnight showing and all I can say is wow. My only complaint was some of the more "adult" scenes which are funny to me but I would not want any child to see it (think the first movie bedroom scene and multiple by 15 more mins).

All in all, my personal review is that it deserves a sold B+ or 4.0 stars depending upon your rating scheme.

By Surak at 8:49 AM ON 06/24/09

so.. you didn't like it... so... you shared it in an emotional manner and wasted more peoples time by making us read it. Such biased and and egotistical ranting is more suited to say... reader comments than a news post... most.. illogical.

By Reddist at 8:51 AM ON 06/24/09

I know I was holding on to hope longer than most, but then it was revealed that new 'bots had "80,000 moving parts", I got scared... the action in the first movie was hard enough to follow, now its just a great(er) cacophony of unintelligible chaos. Why? Just because you CAN do something Mr. Bay, doesn't mean you SHOULD.

By Rafe at 8:58 AM ON 06/24/09

Why criticize a the reviewer at SciFiWire for the bad films the SciFi/SyFy Channel puts out? The staff here aren't part of the channel's programming department.

If you don't like the review, then write your own but attacking a reviewer like this seems petty. The job of a critic is to explain what they like or dislike. A critic who just gives good reviews is a hack.

By smegforbrain at 9:01 AM ON 06/24/09

I think MSNBC's reviewer was reading my mind with this line:

"And before any of you launch into the usual riposte of “This isn’t supposed to be an Oscar-winning drama, it’s just FUN!!!!” let me point out that there are good giant-robots-walloping-the-tar-out-of-each-other movies and there are bad ones, and this second “Transformers” movie falls squarely into the latter category."

Hopefully some of you around here can eventually recognize the difference as well. But I won't hold my breath.

By Bludston at 9:24 AM ON 06/24/09

I saw the midnight showing of the movie, and frankly I loved it! Yes, it might not be quite as good as the first one, but in my books, it's great! Definitely worth going back for a second time :D

By ELAshley at 9:29 AM ON 06/24/09

Never understood movie "reviews". Never. As if they are even remotely credible. People like movies or they don't don't, but reviews undeniably "pre-color" the opinions of those who haven't yet seen the film. I NEVER listen to reviews. I know what I like, and I allow MYSELF to either like of dislike the movie I shelled out cash to see.

And all you folks moaning about how horrible the movie is, based on this one ass's opinion? Go see the movie and decide for yourself if it's any good... or not. Learn to think for yourself.

By Rafe at 9:43 AM ON 06/24/09

ELAshley,

If you don't like reviews, then why are you reading this one? :-P

A review is just someone's opinion. No one is forcing anyone to read it.

Michael Bay is known for loud, big, explosive movies that people either love or hate. I've like some of his movies but others, like Armageddon, I hated. That seen where Bruce Willis chases and shoots at Ben Affleck on an oil platform with live gas burning was irritating but there was the product placement/commercial for that BMW made want to toss my cookies

I haven't seen ROTF yet and will hold off judgment until I do.

By a different tim at 9:43 AM ON 06/24/09

Everyone forgot the cardinal rule of sequals, they always suck compared to the first film. Unless it's The Dark Knight.

By Dorkfather at 9:45 AM ON 06/24/09

Hosted a Midnight release and everyone in the theater loved the movie. I hate reviewers and think all they should get for pay is a clue. GO SEE TRANSFORMERS!!!!

By Stogoe at 9:52 AM ON 06/24/09

Oh, like we should trust a theater owner. Conflict of interest much, Dorkfather?

By bainsidhe at 9:58 AM ON 06/24/09

you kinda knew it wasn't going to live up to the hype when all you saw in the trailers for the longest time was Megan Fox doing poses... if you have to resort luring in viewers with promises of half-nude women, it only means the story is worth squat.

By Walt at 10:17 AM ON 06/24/09

well, considering it was "written" by Bay during the writers' strike, is it that surprising?

By PsiHawk at 10:20 AM ON 06/24/09

Look..

This guy hated the movie. He wote a review. He trashed the movie.

I'm just not sure what movie he saw, or even if he watched the movei for more then 30 seconds, in order to actually write the review.

Yes, the movie gave some history, and filled in the lore of who/what the Fallen is and interestingly enough what makes Optimus Prime so special.

Yes, at times I watched certain scenes and said DAMN that was dumb... (but keeping in mind to an extent the movie is still for kids, and some of those scenes make it more fun for the kids.

I truly enjoyed the movie, so I am going to be biased in any comments I make about it. I can however love amovie and realize that it has faults, or that certain scenes were just 'over the top' But it's a movie.. it's a story...it's entertainment... and it should be fun.

I was excited to be going to the movie, then I read some of the bad reviews/// but I went anyway and I am glad I did.

There is a lot of action, some nice explosions, a few moments where guys will be staring at the screen with there jaws popped open... and even a few scenes where if they go unspoiled you will be genuinely in awe, shocked and surprised. (In a good way)

All in all I loved the movie. It's worth seeing. And if you saw the movie and hated it, go see it again and actually watch the movie. :)

In response to DEATH at 7:17 AM ON 06/24/09

Oh sure let me list the highlights of the film for you that surely in your book must make this the BEST FILM EVER!

Two visual jokes about dogs screwing...
A pair of Transformers that are the most blatent racist joke ever...
Right down the their one gold tooth each...
Language like "p*ssy"...

This film is marketed to children, based on a popular series of cartoons and toys. It may have some of the flavor of those earlier programs, but none of the substance.

In response to: Mechanimorph at 7:18 AM ON 06/24/09

Um... there was a third writer on this film... he had the final pass over the script and most of the things that are being discussed as lousy, crappy elements (see list above) have been attributed to him. He turned in a draft of John Carter of Mars when it was in development at Paramount that contained similar types of visual jokes and racist humor that could have single-handedly destroyed that film had it went into production there.

By jdmimic at 10:24 AM ON 06/24/09

Surak, please. Did someone at Scifiwire really put a gun to your head and force you to read the review? I think not.
No one expected the movie to be Oscar material, except maybe in the SFX department. The reviewers are NOT writing this way. As is clear from this review and all the others I have read, they simply expected the movie to be entertaining. They did not find it that way. If you disagree, fine. But do people really need to get nasty about it? One might expect morons and ill-mannered children on playgrounds to act this way, but one can hope (sadly, in vain it seems), for adults here to behave better.

By Groon at 10:34 AM ON 06/24/09

Death:

You do know the guy who wrote this review isn't responsible for making any of the truly bad SCiFi Channel original movies right? Stop being a fanboy and accept the fact that this guy didn't like the film. I'm expecting it to be a so so film based on all the poor reviews and the rule of sequals.

By JIMJAM at 10:40 AM ON 06/24/09

You know what's awesome?
How ScifiWire has done nothing but hype the hell out of this movie and talk about how great its going to be. Every other article it seems was about ROTF. Now that its out they tell us how bad it is. I could have told you it was going to be crap. Its the sequel to crap.

By Harlock415 at 10:44 AM ON 06/24/09

People who sy they don't pay attention to reviews usually read them. Then again if many of your co-worker and friends told you that the movie was bad, you'd probably pay attention. I think people convince themselves a movie is good cuz it's just big and bloated. If I spent $17 on an Imax ticket, I'd be looking for redeeming factors too. Oe review is not gonna effect me, but is I see dozens of them negative, I notice a trend. The first one was a stupid pile of trash with great special effects. But all I've been hearing about the effects in this is that it doesn't even succeed on that level.

By Prime1985 at 10:53 AM ON 06/24/09

Let me clear something up the First Transformers movie was awful. The characters were boring, and underdeveloped. The plot was trite, and predicitable. The "peeing" scence killed it, and that dumb "secret goverment agent" character was an abomiation. How or why anyone over the age of 10 would ever want to see these sorry excuses of movies is beyond me. They both are terrible. Perhaps next time they could hire good film makers to take on such a project.

By nate9111 at 11:31 AM ON 06/24/09

Giant robot I can buy! Shia Lebouf cheating on megan fox!!!!!!!!! you lost me.
This summers films have been bloody awful even treks story was so floored and poor if it wasnt for the good acting

By TrekMac at 11:57 AM ON 06/24/09

I agree with you Nate9111 and Prime1985.

If you guys remember what "SW: Clone Wars" the movie came out, adults were screaming about how horrible it was. Heavy Star Wars critics ripped apart the cartoon, but they never once thought, "Hey, this is for kids. Why are we rating it as adults."

When it come to the Star Trek XI movie, Nate9111 you are correct in yout quick remarks. All I remember about Star Trek XI is the loud abnoxious music, and the horrible lense flares. If it wasn't for the acting, I might have walked out. Some of the acting was almost forced and cartoonish in that movie as well.

I personally have not seen "Tranformers II", but I knew enough from the trailers to wait for dvd. After watching the first film, I had an argument with a few people who loved the movie.

My argument revolved around this - "When you look at the characters themselves, while they are fighting, it is similar to watching a crushed up candy wrapper being thrown across the floor. All you have are colors tangled together in a uncomprehensive design, which destroys any possibility of admiring details. Its all static action without definition."

By TrekMac at 12:02 PM ON 06/24/09

Sorry about my spelling above. I was writting too fast, and then I didn't go over my work.

By Appleholic at 12:06 PM ON 06/24/09

hahahah... this is way too funny... i read the review, but i couldn't hep but notice all this at the bottom...

for those who hated the movie... well tough luck... go cry to mama...
or wait.. if u think its that bad.. then why dont u stop complaining and make a better transformers movie...

Bay tried to make a Movie that every kid in the 80's would of dreamed to imagine how these robots would look like in real life.. so he helped visualize that with the new technologies we have developed, i am not saying he is the greatest Director and can never go wrong and everything he does must be amazing, but i can say he tried to show us what transformers could look like, he helped to bring our imagination to life..... the robots look better than any robots u can sketch or dream of.. there is no movie out there with this kind of amazing details/color/texture/etc....

why dont you guys just thank god someone made a fun Transformers movie with lots of action and destruction...period... enjoy the action and the bits of comedy... cars, girls.. they put everything in there for u guys... and what does Bay get??? nothing but complaints..!!!
nothing is ever good enough for u guys... once u have ur mind set on something, u either trash it, or make it look like there will never be anything better than it... yes people are entitled to there own opinions.. and should be respected... but guys, when i see someone complaining that everything was bad from characters to the action scenes.. i just think he is full of crap and just wants to nag about anything cause he can..

for all u guys/ladies out there.. just have fun watching a summer block buster movie that is ment to be fun... a movie doesnt always have to have everything you want it to have... and there is no such thing as the perfect movie and dont always expect movies to get better or worse, just expect to enjoy it and try to understand what directors/producers/writer and actors are trying to show us.. Making a movie like this is not as easy as u think... like is said... its better to watch A Transformers Movie, rather not to ever have someone do one, just because they will be scared that critics will never be pleased with what the film makers can achieve...

plus... even if u think its trash.. at the end of the day... how much money they make is all that matters to them... cause it has already generated so much more than anyone has anticipated...
so for Bay and his crew they did a good job... wether u liked it or not... if it attracted that many people then something about it was good enough...

i am just happy there is a movie about transformers... Dark night was amazing, yes, but did u see how many Batman movies there where, before they got it right?

By JD at 12:29 PM ON 06/24/09

This amuses me. If ever a reviewer disagrees with you peoples' opinions, then you slam him like a whiny ten-year-old slams a door at an angry parent.

Is your reaction truly, "Holy crap! He doesn't like it when I do? He must be an idiot because if I like it then it has to be good and he's just dumb and doesn't know what he's talking about so he shouldn't talk at all!"

How many ways should I point out that the above thought is ridiculous. Yet, it's the basic premise of every angry comment here. It shouldn't surprise me though. The world is full of immature loudmouthed hotheads. A pity they drown out those of us who actually have something constructive to say.

So his opinion differed from yours? So what? Grow up instead of crying like a baby. If this many big reviewers thought the movie was crap, then perhaps the movie was crap. Granted, they're looking for something more than eye candy. They're searching for plot, character development, symbolism, etc. They're searching for what makes a good story. And apparently this movie had none. I haven't seen it yet, though it wouldn't surprise me if it were true. The first one had a bare story that really only served as a vehicle to get the movie forward so we could watch our beloved toys bash each other silly.

By Taiso at 12:30 PM ON 06/24/09

Haven't seen this yet and don't plan on it.

Why?

Because the first one sucked dead bears for free. Anybody who liked the first one is either:

A.) A fanboy who forgives it despite it's many flaws. As a long suffering Star Wars fan, I understand this viewpoint. But I always tell people 'I like Phantom Menace despite its many flaws.' I NEVER say 'It's a good movie' or 'this is worth your time.' Because I know the difference between a good movie and a guilty pleasure.

B.) Clueless, lacking taste, distinction or the ability to determine a worthy motion picture from a worthless one. I don't think these PEOPLE are without redeeming value, mind you. I'm not attacking their character. I AM, however, attacking their ability to distinguish what separates good cinema from bad. My brother in law is a fine human being but he has the worst taste in movies ever. That's not a knock on him as a person, it's a knock on his taste in movies. And I likewise knock the same in anybody that actually tries to defend Transformers as quality cinema.

The first one sucked. Deal with it.

I see everyone here saying things like 'it's a summer movie' and 'it's a popcorn movie' and 'it's just for kids.'

Those are POOR F*CKING EXCUSES for justifying bad filmmaking and the money you've likely wasted seeing it (yours though it may be). And I don't even need to see ROTF (which really SHOULD be called 'ROTFLMAO AT HOW BAD THIS MOVIE IS') to know that it's bad because Michael Bay is Uwe Boll with studio backing, plain and simple. Always has been, always will be.

UP is an all ages movie and it is the best film I've seen this summer. Why?

Because it's actually constructed with care and an artistic desire by the production staff to make a GOOD MOVIE. There is probably more meaning in the first 10 minutes of UP than there is in all of both Transformers movies combined.

Transformers doesn't have to be deep or philosophical.

Transformers doesn't have to be an Oscar contender.

Transformers doesn't have to be the rebirth of the giant robot genre.

But what it HAS to be, above all other things, is HONEST TO ITSELF. The original cartoon was about Autobots, good guys with distinct personalities that stood out, fighting Decepticons, bad guys with distinct personalities that stood out, using the Earth as their battlefield, with the humans caught in the middle and helpless to do anything about it.

That is all Transformers needs to be.

I don't want to see five different sets of human characters all trying to impotently circumvent the inevitable for 75 minutes. We know the robots are going to fight one another and we know that Prime and Megatron will do battle in climactic grand fashion. These things are inevitable. Why do these movies spend so much time putting that off as much as possible with pointless plot threads that only bore the audience and kill their interest gradually? Why do the movies try to sell us on the spectacle of iconic imagery such as Megatron swimming out of the ocean and of Optimus Prime posing next to the great pyramid when we all know these scenes will lack any substance or gravitas? They're gimmicky shots designed to excite us. They don't mean anything outside of their existence as trailer fodder.

Any good Transformers movie needs to be about the TRANSFORMERS, not the human beings caught in the middle. The original cartoon had MANY problems, the main of which being that it's a 22 minute commercial for the toys, but at least the characters had some charm, identity and useful purpose to them. In these movies, they're just non-descript amorphous masses of twisted steel taking up screen space. Other than Prime and Megatron, they're indistinct from one another.

Gleaning the few things from the Transformers that makes them substantial in pop culture and putting that on the big screen is not hard to do. Michael Bay never did care to make a movie ABOUT the Transformers. He makes movies about what he wants to make and found a way to shoehorn the Transformers into his insipid plot.

And I could give two sh*ts about Megan Fox, to be honest. So she's a hot chick. So what? People that say 'But Megan Fox is in it and she's worth the price of admission alone!' need to get off my planet and stop breathing my oxygen. You will find hotter, better looking girls for free on the internet and many of them get naked and many of them do the kinds of things you only wish Megan Fox would do on screen.

If you like Megan Fox as an actress and enjoy her craft, then by all means go see this movie for that. But if you like Megan Fox because 'she's a hottie', then just bring up Google on your browser and find something better.

By Bluesman at 1:36 PM ON 06/24/09

After reading all the comments bashing ROTF, it only affirms my belief about people who review movies;

"Those who can make movies do, those who can't become critics."

By zosolias at 1:49 PM ON 06/24/09

LOL, Taiso hit it on the head. The first xformers was horrible, and I see no reason why this should be any better. Any one above the age of ten should stay home and save their money for something better. At least Shia has made enough money to pay for acting lessons. Now, if he'd only take some...

By E at 2:02 PM ON 06/24/09

We all know that, at best, this movie will be summer popcorn fun. NOBODY expects this movie to be remotely "good." Unfortunately, the early word is that this movie is outright offensive a la The Phantom Menace (remember the evil Asian empire, oh, I mean "Trade Federation"? And Jar Jar Banks, I mean "Binks"? And Watta the Italian stereotype?) The reports of "urban" robots make Lucas almost un-racist by comparison.

I might have gone to see this movie, had I not been tipped off re: the blatant racism. Too bad, because Bay's alright when it comes to blowing things up, even if he's never had any talent doing anything else.

By DEATH at 2:16 PM ON 06/24/09

Thanks for your points con and pro. As a black man I too was disappointed in the sterotypical nature of the Twins but I don't think it was any MORE racist than most things in this society. Young white guys have been winking and nodding and using references to Hip-Hop culture in a sarcastic way for years and although it is racist, most of the time it isn't meant so harshly. Remember this is the same group that objectifies women at every turn, and thinks Jackass is brilliant comedy so it's not just blacks.

As for the movie I got what I wanted, Prime died as I suspected and was ressurrected, sooner than I expected (I thought he'd die late and get brought back in 3rd movie.)

Reviewers have the right to review in fact it's thier job. I also have to right to tell them to suck it. Truth is as critics go I respect Roger Ebert, just don't like his opinion on this one. And some anonymous Sci Fi drone...yeah i can tell him to pack sand AND associate him with Sci-Fis faults because he's anaonymous and it's promoted as if this is the opinion of the company.

And I am ALLOWED to be mad about early reviews being negative because I want a LIFE for this franchise. Hollywood works on numbers. I don't want early reviews to derail sales, because I want a Transformers 3, and sure I'd like the writing to be better.

All in all, good effects, good fights, an ATTEMPT at a story and actually a validation of the importance of quality writing. If not for the writers strike maybe this film would have been different. Maybe 3 will be awesome.

But I'll still go see it a few times and own the Blu-Ray. So yes, I'm a fan boy.

By Arcane_Guyver at 2:35 PM ON 06/24/09

This movie isn't perfect, trying too hard at a number of things...maybe that's why it seems like the author's trying way too hard with this review?
"How do I make my review stand out from the rest...hey, I know! VITRIOL!!!"

By trauma21 at 3:46 PM ON 06/24/09

I see many people complaining about a movie they didn't see. I actually went and saw it this morning and I liked it. The reviewer was upset that there wasn't enough robots fighting and other critics are saying that it was too much fighting and not enough plot. Bay can't win from losing. If you guys expect a cinematic cornacopia of emotions in this movie then your a fool (taiso). Also everyone keeps comparing movies to the Dark Knight! lets get this straight the acting ( Heath Ledger)carried that movie just like Denzel In Training day. There were so many holes in that script you could drive a truck thru it.now back to the movie in question, when optimus is fighting in the woods against Megatron and the decepticons that was great. I could even tolerate the ghetto twins because to me it (like death said) something that hollywood been doing for years. I don't care if they make another one or notall I know is I went to the movies and I had a good time.

By antodav at 4:37 PM ON 06/24/09

Took me a while to remember that the "superior blockbuster sequel" they were referring to was The Dark Knight.

I haven't seen the movie yet—plan to tomorrow—so I will not read the rest of the review or comment on what it says. However, after watching the first one the other night, I will be surprised if they can top it. Therefore, I plan to go easy on them. These guys made Star Trek, and many other films/TV shows I enjoyed, so I have plenty of reason to be confident that this will be good too.

""Those who can make movies do, those who can't become critics.""

Spoken like somebody who can't handle the opinions of others.

Show me somebody who says they've never criticized a film (or a book, or a tv show), and I'll show you a liar. So, knock off the BS, Bluesman.

By doctoralgorithm at 5:37 PM ON 06/24/09

this film felt like eating your favourite dinner but it was made out of cardboard. visually bigger and badder than no.1 in every way yet more fun would have come from shelling peanuts in the dark

The first 'Transformers' movie was great!
And I just saw the new one today.
It's awesome!

I just saw T2 - caught the last matinee and have been home less than an hour - and I have to say it's a good movie. Not great, by any means, but definitely good. My only complaint is that it should have been rated R instead of PG-13 for so much profanity and sexual inuendo. THe theatre I was in with my teen-aged niece was about 2/3 filled with children under 10 and I saw quite a few parents shaking their heads over the profanity and a couple of pretty crude sex jokes.

Originality?......Repetative?
This from a channel that almost may as well be called the Ghost Hunter Channel.

By hobojoblo at 9:18 PM ON 06/24/09

I just saw it and thought it was a fantastic guilty-pleasure action movie. Superior action movie I might add. I came in looking to be nothing more than entertained, and that I was. Best two and a half hours I've spent at a theater in a while.

By darkwatch at 9:48 PM ON 06/24/09

I just came home from watching TF 2. For the most part, I liked it. I laughed, I cried (not really, but close) and overall I had a good time...Mission accomplished!!! The movie DID what it was supposed to. It entertained me. For all the folks who are angry with the negative feedback; forgive them. This is a generation raised on Ritalin and other psychtropic nerve inhibitors. They don't know what they are talking about. Its' the drugs that mommy and daddy shoved down thier throats as little kids between poke'mon and Spongebob commercials that are doing most of the talking. So be like Jesus and just let it go. I grew up on the TF cartoon in the 80's and I can tell you that these movies outclass the cartoons by a longshot. The cartoon was designed to sell merchandise, so was GI Joe, Masters of the Universe, TMNT, Power Rangers, and Poke'mon. Although, Transformers was a cartoon aimed at children the movies were aimed at both adolescents AND their parents who grew up on these cartoons. Although I'm apprehensive about taking my 9-year old to see it, I think that the combination of gentle immersion and some parental guidance on my part, he will be alright. I appreciate the effort that the producers, writers, and director put into making a childrens cartoon into a couple of decent movies. Now I'm stoked for the Voltron and Robotech movies...bring the PAIN!!!

PS: Any parents who take children to see this, here's some topics you need be ready to explain to the youngsters, such as: the chick with the tongue, nose probes (I'm sure Bay was struggling to resist the "other" oriface probe), dog and leg humping, and giant robot scrotums. Enjoy!

I loved the first movie, but if you thought ROTF was good, you are stupid. End of story.

By TechTeacher at 11:17 PM ON 06/24/09

The battle scenes were great, I also saw the movie at a midnight showing last night and left the theater more than satisfied! It was one of the best summer popcorn action movies I have ever seen. I respect your opinion, but I must disagree with your assessment that this movie was poor.

By Red Mask at 12:04 AM ON 06/25/09

Okay, so the adult humor is inappropriate for kids. But then again, these are the ugliest robots I've ever seen. (Why should kids even want to buy the garbage pail merchandise?) There's no real plot. Some of the characters aren't anything like the originals. I have a feeling I should watch I, Robot instead.

By grooveyapple at 12:12 AM ON 06/25/09

T:ROTF was fantastic. For 2 1/2 hours I got treated to an action spectacular which allowed me to escape both the heat and these troubled times. Michael Bay is a genius director who knows how to make BIG action movies. No one else in Hollywood can do what he does. I'm not sure why critics are giving this movie such a hard time. Sometimes I think people who write reviews for a living forget how to just let their hair down and watch a summer popcorn flick like the rest of us. That's strange considering critics write reviews to be read by the moviegoing public, not other critics. Anyway, I think Mike and co. more than earned their paychecks on this one.

By Rooseveltsteak at 1:37 AM ON 06/25/09

For the life of me I cannot understand why the parents of movie critics didn't realize their mistake by actually contributing to society scumbags like movie critics. My only hope is that they realized their mistake after child #1 and didn't reproduce anymore!

By Berlin at 2:50 AM ON 06/25/09

Wow, there sure are a lot kids under 12 commenting on this movie. Kids who are very easily entertained.

By RhinoHunter at 6:42 AM ON 06/25/09

Are you kidding - who are you? A senile fool whose idea of SciFi is landing on the moon or just another GenY hypercritic? No humour?! Are you brain-dead? Just come back from seeing it - for the love of [insert an icon of your choice] critics - do you think you HAVE to bag movies these days just to get paid or is someone paying you to just look for negatives? The robot fights suck? What's your yard-stick here? Blatantly rips off other films? Oh C'Mon! These are context-relevant plot points - you can link anything current to anything from the past, that's the lazy way to fill a column. You are really struggling to be relevant here mate. SyFy - get some decent reviewers.

By Stacey Ann at 12:08 PM ON 06/25/09

If you critics can do better then go ahead and do it, The producers, writers, actors and anyone else that had anything to do with this movie is making millions..........What are you making??? My guess would be NOTHING.........and millions that they make is coming out of your pockets, cause you spent your money to see the movie.

By Provider 2 at 2:45 PM ON 06/25/09

the first Transformers movie was mindless fun.

this one is just mindless.

the plot somehow manages to be shallower than the first with larger holes.

beyond a suspension of disbelief the film requires you to cease all brain function completely so you won't ask questions about glaringly obvious logical problems.

but if you just want to see robots fight each other i think you'll like this better than the first. the camera seems to have been pulled back a bit from the action, which means you can actually follow what the hell is going on - although the generic decepticons at the end of the film that exist purely to be destroyed leave you with a sort of empty feeling.

go see it (you will anyway) but remember when you're watching it that there was potential in the franchise for a far better movie than either of the two we've been given so far.

By majestic22 at 3:20 PM ON 06/25/09

Saw the movie at the midnight showing and was entertained. For people to expect a deep plot or strong story from a movie based on an 80's cartoon is ridiculous. It was a fun movie nothing more, nothing less. It you think it is a bad movie, that's your opinion. To call myself and others stupid or the like for liking the movie is something completely different. To those with that point of view, you can f**k off!

By mustanglvr at 9:06 PM ON 06/25/09

THis movie's bad reviews were purely based on the fact that the left wing liberals cant stand it to see Obama slapped around. loved it We need more right wingers taking pot shots at poor government . Thats real entertainment. Piss of a liberal take personal responsiblity.

By adshun at 9:44 AM ON 06/26/09

I for one loved Transformers 2 if you go expecting to see great effects and action from beginning to end it works. If you go in expecting oscar calibre writing and strong dramatic performances see another movie.

By oomu at 1:11 PM ON 06/26/09

the cartoons was not deep
the cartoons was for children

the cartoons was ALL about BIG ROBOTS and tiny little humans sometimes...

the cartoons was fun with bad guys and good guys, not many jokes, not so violent but all about giant robots.

it's not that movies.

theses movies are just crude and sexual Michael Bay typical stuff.

Noisy, not so many robots fights, not so fun, and not easy to watch.

Of course you are entertained, but you could be entertained with whatever on tv.

There are no others movies. It's not about "deep stuff", No deep, No philosophy or whater liberal-right wing and mighty cube are needed !

just Big Robots well filmed !

By Obsesive compulsive at 1:23 PM ON 06/26/09

I agree with adshun you peaple are expecting another dark knight that was one in a million because sequels are never better than the orignal

By riker at 8:56 PM ON 06/27/09

YA KNOW the frist movie was so fasr off form the cartoon it was not even funny.. the story was just above blowing but u could feal the meaning and ther grafices where great. i liked it . watched it a few times.. now this one was truer to the cartoon.. wish they had entordence more atuobots.. or spent more time with the new ones, but it had the feal of the cartoon movie from the 80's... of corse it is different.. but it had a storie to it. it was not like star trek.. which total changed the whole idea of the siers.. here the heart is the same... now if they had blowen earth up that would have been more like star trek.
personal i love it.. going to take my girlfriend to see it.. this was a naturel expastion to the las tmovie.. people this was more for the fanes who knew transformers... so if u did not get it go back and re look at the old stuff..

By cheiex at 9:29 AM ON 06/29/09

whatever peeps...just enjoy the movie....dont think too deep its just a film!!!

By QuantumSam at 10:39 AM ON 06/29/09

Just remember that Ebert's original rating on Star Wars was TWO STARS and then a few weeks later changed to FOUR STARS.

The movie was great! Period. End of discussion.
