Rod Serling among TV icons to be honored on U.S. postage stamps

Twilight Zone creator and host Rod Serling, the Lone Ranger and 18 other television icons from the '50s will be honored on first-class postage stamps to be released Aug. 11.

The U.S. Postal Service plans to hold a ceremony dedicating the set of "Early TV Memories" commemoratives at 10:30 a.m. PT on that date at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood, Calif.

The event will be free and open to the public.

The set consists of stamps depicting (as seen in order below) Milton Berle; I Love Lucy stars Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance; Red Skelton; puppet Howdy Doody; Dragnet star Jack Webb; Lassie; William Boyd, aka Hopalong Cassidy, and his horse Topper; You Bet Your Life host Groucho Marx; Dinah Shore; Ed Sullivan; Kukla, Fran and Ollie; Phil Silvers; The Lone Ranger (Clayton Moore) and his horse Silver; Perry Mason star Raymond Burr; Alfred Hitchcock; George Burns and Gracie Allen; Ozzie and Harriet Nelson; Steve Allen; Rod Serling; and "The Honeymooners" stars Jackie Gleason and Art Carney.

To which we can only add—good for them!

But listen up, U.S. Postal Service. How about that set of stamps devoted specifically to science fiction's trailblazers? It's long past time for that, don't you think?

As a child growing in New York City, I saw almost evryone of these shows (except Kukla, Fran and Ollie). They didn't include Roy Rodgers. For those who are only interested in science-fictiom, Lucille Ball and her Cuban-musician husband Desi Arnaz (his face is over the "MEM" part of Early Memories") founded Desilu Studios, where Star Trek was created. I consider them the "godparents" of Star Trek.
