Has G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra director Stephen Sommers been fired only a couple of months before the film's release?
No, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura told Latino Review.
The rumor surfaced in a post by someone called "EndTimes" on the posting board of producer Don Murphy.
"After a test screening wherein the film tested the lowest score ever from an audience in the history of Paramount, the executive who pushed for the movie Brad Weston had Stephen Sommers, the super hack director of the film fired. Removed. Locked out of the editing room," the post said.
According to the rumor, the studio brought in Stuart Baird to edit the film into releasable shape, with Paramount's input.
"It's very unfair to Steve, it's completely untrue. He was never asked to leave or been fired or any of that," di Bonaventura told Latino Review. "That's ridiculous. The movie tested very well."
He added: "It hurts a guy's career when people go around talking about that he was fired or he didn't do a good job, and truth is he did a really good job. People are going to enjoy the movie, and the test audiences enjoyed the movie."
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is slated for release on Aug. 7.

The studio should have known as soon as the script called for "accelerator suits" that it was going to be lame.
When are these studios going to realize that if you want a franchise to be successful you need to take the source material seriously. Campy direction and b-movie talent actors, with the exception of Dennis Quaid, is not going to lead to a blockbuster.
By Prime1985 at 11:45 AM ON 06/11/09
Hopefully this is true. I hate the fact that a bunch of incompetent movie makers were given G.I. Joe. There are so many interesting things that can be done with these characters, just look at the new series by IDW comics, and the online G.I. Joe Resolute. Both have fun, exciting stories that would make fantastic movies, yet these ass-clowns get away with making a crap movie and calling it G.I. Joe. It's disgusting.
And another thing. . . if only the piece of crap Transformers movies could fail, then perhaps sometime in the future we could get well written stories for both movies, (and this time hire actors to play in them . . )

Stuart Baird!?!?! Did that sungle handedly sink the Star Trek franchise with his direction of Nemesis? Oh I am definitely going to wait and see this trainwreck... UH never!
By Chris Gomez at 12:01 PM ON 06/11/09
This is unbelievable. Hack or no hack, this is the wrong time to be deciding to sack the director. We may just lose another good comic book franchise to people who may have made some terribly poor decisions.
By Reaper2k at 12:03 PM ON 06/11/09
Maybe this will go the way of the 1994 Roger Corman-produced Fantastic Four and disappear into bootleg mythology. Then, ten years from now, someone else will get a chance and make a... well... okay, so the 2005 version of Fantastic Four was pretty crappy, too. Bad comparison.
By Photoboy at 12:16 PM ON 06/11/09
@Oinkinoregon
To be fair, Baird is a very good editor and he has rescued quite a few films by re-editing them, and he's edited quite a few classics like Superman, Leathal Weapon, Casino Royale, etc.
He's a shit director, there's no denying it after Nemesis, but hiring him to fix a movie is usually the best chance a film has of not totally sucking. He was actually given the Nemesis gig after "saving" Tomb Raider in the editing suite.
Of course both GI Joe and Bayformers are beyond saving thanks to both films abandoning what made the originals so great, but Baird should be able to turn out something vaguely watchable.
By QWERTY at 12:19 PM ON 06/11/09
Hopefully it will be shelved, along with the original Fantastic Four!
By gxknight at 12:20 PM ON 06/11/09
My biggest reservation from what I've seen is the fact that EVERYBODY looks alike. One of the great things about the source material was how different everyone was, and how thier look reflected it. Insead we've got X-men with guns.
I actually like the concept of the accelerator suit.... just not for GI JOE.
It seems to be that it may be too late to salvage this sinking ship with a simple re-edit.
By TrekkieMC at 12:35 PM ON 06/11/09
This movie is going to bomb big time. What they should have done is cast Josh Duhamel and Tyrese as Duke and Roadblock to link up a G.I. Joe/Transformers movie. I owned about 90% of the new toys and the casting director should never work again. They should have taken the Joes in the waves that they were released in. Rip Cord and Heavy Duty should not be in this movie!!! Cover Girl is a toss up. Stalker, Gung-Ho, and Wild Bill should be!!!
By battleguard at 1:18 PM ON 06/11/09
Just goes to show you that if you are not "True Believer" making the movie then you will probably screw it up.
So many bad movies, so little good TV shows, so many books to go back to reading.
Oh and the comments by Prime1985 on Transformers - bite it. You don't have a clue either....go back to your "little ponies"
By malohombre at 1:21 PM ON 06/11/09
I knew the second I read G.I.Joe was going to stand for some global pc acronym and dropping "The Real American Hero" part. It was going to suck donkey balls!
By Marty B. at 1:35 PM ON 06/11/09
So the reasonable inference that can be taken from the bombastic world of the Don Murphy forums is that Baird might have been brought in for a final edit, though Sommers gets directors credit for what will probably still be a steaming pile.
The IDW stuff is ok, I thought after Devil's Due there wasn't much you could do with the 80s Real American Hero storyline and I'm not particularly stunned by the IDW's new origins for the property. That said, Resolute was awesome and I really hope we'll be seeing more of that once this film falls to pieces.
Will it get shelved? No chance. There are already toys, etc. produced., and unlike Marvel's movies which the publisher wants to stand on their own, hasbro's investment in this is to move those toy units.
By JR at 1:38 PM ON 06/11/09
You put crap in, and you get crap out.
Simple.
By GrumpyOldMan at 1:58 PM ON 06/11/09
I liked the original Mummy, but haven't been impressed with any of SS's work since. The sentiments stated before reflect my own, but for me I know this movie was doomed as soon as they showed Destro without a mask. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow gave some hope in the trailer, but it sounds like even that will be crap.
By michaelread at 1:59 PM ON 06/11/09
Yeah, Star Trek Nemesis stunk, but it started with a terrible script. Baird did what he could with what he had, which has made him one of the hottest editors in Hollywood. He's also responsible for my favourite movie with Steven Seagal, Executive Decisions. Remember that? It's the one where the ponytailed one gets blown out of the airplane in the first act.
By 240borty at 2:42 PM ON 06/11/09
Why is everybody so negative about this movie. All we have to base a opinion on is the 3 min trailer. Nobody thought Hugh Jackman could pull off wolverine & now it would be hard to imagine anybody else in the role. So far I dont have any problem with what i've seen.I'm hoping for the best , tell I've seen proof that it's garbage. One 3min trailer with some different ideas that were'nt in the comic book Isn't a reason to completely write off a movie Ive waited my whole life for.
By TheGigaShadow at 3:02 PM ON 06/11/09
"Baird did what he could with what he had, which has made him one of the hottest editors in Hollywood."
Baird was editing long before he directed STN. STN has nothing to do with his success as an editor.
Also, it's Executive Decision not Decisions.
By bigkidjosh at 3:09 PM ON 06/11/09
I could almost get past what I saw in the trailer (I do stress almost) and then I saw the picture of Cobra Commander from his action figure image (if you haven't seen it, google it, you will be upset). I read they decided to not go with the hood because it remided them of the KKK. I'm sorry, it does seem wrong that someone as evil as Cobra Commander might make you think of something evil, we should probably chande that. The thing I really don't understand is why Hollywood seems to think that when they are making a movie from something that people love that they have to change it. People have been waiting for a live action G.I. Joe movie for so long, so it would only make sense that it totally be changed from how people remember it. I mean it did work as a cartoon show, comic book, toy line for years and years, it probably was a good idea to change it. I mean how does that saying go? Why not mess with perfection? Yeah, I think that's how it goes.
By dshell102 at 4:25 PM ON 06/11/09
LOL! What a bunch of twits, basing everything they think about the movie on an internet article which probably isn't even true! Then they want to pass on their opinions, like they have something intelligent to say when they don't even really know anything in the first place! Their "knowledge" is just gossip and rumors! It explains so much, and speaks so little about everyone who believes gossip and makes decisions based on rumors.... no mention of the trailer and what they actually know, just their reaction to gossip.
Pathetic.
By a different tim at 5:52 PM ON 06/11/09
Ok I'm just going on what I've seen in the trailer so bear with me. They recruit the best of the best to stiop Cobra, yet they need accelerator suits? Isn't that a slap in the face to todays men and women in the military? I know that soldiers and Marines like any weapon they can get to help them take down the enemy but they've always relied on their own skills. I'm taking it to seriously aren't I?
By Impish at 6:35 PM ON 06/11/09
The Devil's Due snake eyes and storm shadow graphic novels would be decent movies. I have to say that it's the most believable backstory for how Cobra Commander came about that I've seen.
At least it's not Sigma 6

"Stuart Baird!?!?! Did that sungle handedly sink the Star Trek franchise with his direction of Nemesis? "
Eh, the franchise was already well into decline by that point. And Nemesis was still (somehow) profitable.
By Shadowking666 at 7:04 PM ON 06/11/09
I find it funny people wanting "realisim" from this franchise, do we not remember things like B.A.T.'s or the laser guns or the multitude of other science fiction related stuff attributed to the franchise as a whole? Jesus people can complain about the stupidest stuff now a days.
Personally I don't think Accelerator suits are going to break the film when there were other things in the various cartoons and comics that were ten times more out there.

he has two oscar nominations for editing superman and gorillas in the mist. so...he is capable of doing good work. he should just never be allowed to direct again.
By photoguyryan at 8:01 PM ON 06/11/09
I cant speak to whats coming out soon. Havent seen it yet, but from the press that it has gotten, it sounds like it has the same problems that Star wars 1-3 had, and a lot of scifi/action sets since than.
Too much emphasis on CGI and tech, not enough on real actors, doing real acting, and real directors to direct the actors, not oversee CGI arts.
They might as well turn these things into direct to cd release.
By scififan at 8:37 PM ON 06/11/09
Wow! A lot of very strong opinions on a movie that has not yet been released. Personally, I don't believe in trashing a movie until I have seen it. And trashing it based on some questionable articles and snippets of film seems irresponsible. Why don't we wait until it is released and see what we think. Maybe it will stink, and maybe it will be better than expected. Let's wait and see before pronouncing it a terrible movie.
By pheonyx74 at 10:13 PM ON 06/11/09
The accelerator suits are a direct ripoff of the "Tin Man" suits created in the 90's by the author Dale Brown. He better get some credit for it. And I agree they don't belong in GI Joe!!
By Marty B. at 1:48 PM ON 06/12/09
Yes, pheonyx, no one has ever come up with form fitting power and speed enhancing exoskeletons until Dale Brown. Seriously?
By Pheonyx74 at 11:22 PM ON 06/12/09
Read 'Tin Man' There is a lot more to the armor than speed and strength enhancement.
By blackysm2 at 5:34 AM ON 06/16/09
This movie is for kids. It's sole purpose is to re invent the franchise for a new wave of kids to buy and play with the toys. Maybe one of them will grow up and make a cool G. I. Joe movie.
By Hope at 10:16 AM ON 06/16/09
I have hope that if this movie screens poorly they will just turn it into a 90 minute girl on girl lesbian scene between scarlet and baroness
If that happens i can see it being the biggest blockbuster of the summer
By Grey at 2:56 AM ON 06/17/09
Two words: Marlon Wayans
How many people had to have passed on this franchise reboot before Marlon got a call? This just can't be good.
