Sci-fi TV veteran Jeff Bell will run the show at ABC's V revamp

Sci-fi TV veteran Jeff Bell will run the show at ABC\'s \<i\>V\<\/i\> revamp

Writer Jeff Bell will serve as show runner for the upcoming ABC sci-fi drama V, and ABC offered a few more details about the update of the 1980s alien-invasion miniseries, Variety reported.

Bell (CBS' Harper's Island) was busy Wednesday meeting with the show's new writing staff. The challenge now, he said, is to map out what direction V might take over the next several seasons.

The original V used the story of an alien invasion as an allegory for Nazi Germany; the new V will tackle issues of government, devotion, race and faith, the trade paper reported.

"Especially when you look at our current times, with the economy, wars and social strife, it's the perfect time for a force like this to come along," Bell told the trade paper. "In many ways this is a very American show, about the individual versus society. It's about how America can appreciate and question things that seem to be too good to be true."

ABC has ordered 13 episodes of V this year; the show is set to launch sometime after January. The show will have a definite beginning, middle and end, executives said.

Bell, a veteran of such genre shows as Angel and The X-Files, will work as an executive producer alongside The 4400's Scott Peters, who wrote the V pilot, and Jason Hall and Steve Pearlman. Yves Simoneau directed and executive-produced the pilot.

The original worked as a VERY-limited series. The weekly show was awful!!!

This will suck.

hmmmm, how many people are now involved with running this show? (why isn't peters or hall a show runner???) I'm seeing a whole lot of "ideas" and a whole lot of potential for a messy outcome!

We've gone from a GRAND story of the evil of a nazi-like regime to... faith and devotion... and government?! Is this what they consider epic? I'm trying really hard to be optimistic but I'm just not feeling it.

One person in charge = clarity and direction. Just makes me want Kenny Johnson's theatrical version to become a reality even more!!!

Well, Speaking as a fan of the original miniseries, I can honestly say that this "Re-Imagine" is going to suck monkey chunks. Why must they continue to take a formaula that works and try to mutate it into some nameless horror. The original 2 miniseries' worked because of ther close parallels to Nazi Germany. This government and faith and devotion mess is a crock. It also seems like everyone involved with these shows seems to think that everyone is a Christian, Jew or Muslim. I wish they would keep in mind that the way they push the monotheistic religions is at times annoying and at times offensive to people of other beliefs. That's what made BG so infuriating to polytheists...

Wow, I totally disagree with the negative comments. I thought the teaser stuff looked great and can't wait to see what they can do with this story. Not only that, they have Morena Baccarin (Firefly) and Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost) and a cadre of other great actors signed up. I can see why people may be hesitant because of other "reimagined" shows, but I am definitely looking forward to this show. You have my full support...

But what side will it come down on? The individual or "society"? In the first V, everyday individuals rose up to form a resistance and take care of the invasion when the government wouldn't/couldn't. This series has a homeland security officer as its star, so it would seem (on the surface) to be steering in the opposite direction. I'll watch it long enough to see how they address this.

Jeff Bell did a great job on "Angel", but this just points out how he doesn't have the ability to run a show and he had little right to criticize the direction Ira Steven Behr took with "The 4400" Seasons 3 and 4 simply because ratings dropped. If anything, the show got better and more political and more original.

I might check this out for Jeff Bell, but Scott Peters is a hack, especially for not ensuring that Paramount show respect for the fans and at least get Ira Behr on board for audio commentaries for that final DVD set of The 4400. Peters is just too superficial for me.

I wasn' thrilled to see them remaking this show but after seeing the teaser I am definitely going to give it a chance - if nothing else for the actors that are involved!! And to hear Scott Peters is part makes it even more appealing. I loved the first two seasons of The 4400 before it turned really strange and goofy in Seasons 3 & 4.

By Muldfeld at 1:03 PM ON 06/04/09

The "he" I was referring to was Scott Peters, not Jeff Bell.

It turned original is what The 4400 did in Seasons 3 and 4, especially the last few episodes of each of those seasons. Lilly was weighing the show down because they couldn't find much original for her to do. In Seasons 3 and 4, they really got to explore the area of moral ambiguity of revolutionary/political leaders with Jordan Collier, as well as issues of identity politics with Alana Mareva's divided loyalties between regular humans and the 4400, the causes of terrorism with the Nova Group, and issues of lost youth and religious fundamentalism with Kyle Baldwin. They also used the War on Promicin as a combination of the unjust criminalization that followed the War on Drugs and the War on Terror. Finally, they explored the diverging visions of the good society between Jordan Collier's socialist-like vision and The Marked's belief in hierarchy and materialism. Finally, we actually got to see that the people from the future are incredibly fallible and mean, so we turn on its head the idea of some superior people or force or fate guiding our characters perfectly, as happens on "Lost" or other lesser shows. It turns out they don't know what the heck they're doing. And that body-control story arc was totally innovative in having Marked Tom Baldwin actually subvert Diana's suspicions, but not able to hold his emotions back.

Ira Steven Behr is a fracking genius!

There is no point in making the new V exactly the same as the original version (i.e. - a Nazi allegory) as that has been done now. The 80's version did it extremely well, but its still been done. It would be much more interesting to do an allegory of other kinds of abuses of power in our world, which the new V seems to be intent on doing. Although I'm not fond of remakes, I will give the new version a chance when it airs as it so far looks and sounds quite promising. It certainly couldn't be worse than the ridiculous weekly series that followed the two original miniseries in the mid 80s. As for Kenneth Johnson's idea for a film version, I think that is just a lot of posturing and hot air and he is showing himself to be more and more like Grand A. Larceny all the time. Maybe its time they both just created something new (or in the case of Larsen, steal something new).

Melora...You have encapsulated everything I wanted to say on the matter. I too will be watching the new "V" with cautious enthusiasm.

Battlesar Galactica was re-imagined, Star Trek has been, Flash Gordon, Batman, virtually all of them. One day, sacriligiously, someone will redo Star Wars. It's going to happen, possibly after I'm dead, though. You just have to accept the fact that it's not the original and judge it on its own merits. BG did a terrific job, and I was a huge skeptic. The latest Flash Gordon was so bad I couldn't even get through the first episode. If you like it, great, if not, great.

By beegee at 10:48 PM ON 06/04/09

Jeff scripted two episodes of Harper's Island and I'm not sure how many made it to air cause it turned out to be formulaic schlock. I could barely get through the first episode.

Was looking forward to the remake of V but, they may have too many hands in the pot..already.

By joe0810 at 1:06 PM ON 06/05/09

I say give the show a chance. Everyone is so fast to complain about what sucks but have not even seen the finished work. We all want more "quality" sci-fi shows but are not willing to support these shows with our viewership. No wonder the networks pull these shows when the ratings are dismal. Stop complaining, tune in, and make up your mind at that point.

By Alric at 8:03 PM ON 06/07/09

These people who have a knee-jerk reaction to remakes make me sick. I think they believe it sounds cool to moan about it. It's a kind of snobbery. I can think of a few remakes that were better than the original (the Battlestar Galactica being the most recent example), and the previews of this look great. Don't watch it, you bunch of gripers.
