Shia LaBeouf says that a new \<i\>Indiana Jones\<\/i\> movie is in the works
Shia LaBeouf (center) standing over Karen Allen in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Shia LaBeouf told BBC News that a new Indiana Jones movie is in the works and that director Steven Spielberg has come up with a story.

"Steven just said that he cracked the story on it before I left, and I think they're gearing that up," LaBeouf said. No word on whether LaBeouf will actually appear in it or reprise the role of "Mutt" Williams from the last film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Watch the video interview at the link above. LaBeouf can next be seen in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which opens on June 24.

Not sure that that is a good idea, Kindom Skull was not that great and a old Indy didn't help.

By Nick H at 2:01 PM ON 06/16/09

Well, if Crystal Skull was the 50's retro-future/silver-age to Temple of Doom's thirties jungle-mania, will the next one take Indy (or son) on some trippy Castanedan peyote adventure?

By AppSteve at 2:10 PM ON 06/16/09

No Nazis + No Christian Relic = Bad Indiana Jones Movie

Lost Ark was good, Temple of Doom was Blah, Last Crusade was awesome, Crystal Skulls was suck

By Sithboy at 2:48 PM ON 06/16/09

I loved Indy 4, and I would go see Indy 5. And 6, 7, 8, etc...

No Nazis + No Christian Relic = A different Indy movie than has already been done before

By zathras at 2:50 PM ON 06/16/09

When I watched Crystal Skull, I did ask myself "Is this movie unsatisfying because Harrison Ford just isn't the youthful guy I associate with Indiana Jones--is that why it isn't working for men?"

Then I decided the real reason the film fell flat for me was its overall plot, pacing, and the fact that there were no distinctly interesting characters, or really engaging dialogue in the film. And to be honest, I just found Shia LaBeouf 's character annoying.

However, I did like the whole scene with Indy, the atomic bomb, and the refrigerator. I know a lot of people found that scene ridiculous and far-fetched, and I can understand why, but I still liked it and thought it captured the feel of the earlier three movies.

By wdwyer at 3:13 PM ON 06/16/09

How much you wanna bet there's gonna be a "reboot" movie that only has LeBeof in it. YEAH! The death of another beloved Franchise!!!

By Methos at 3:24 PM ON 06/16/09

NNNNNOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By Marillion at 3:43 PM ON 06/16/09

I welcome a new installment. Crystal Skull left me really wanting more.. Was a better middle chapter than a bookend.

Punky Mutt was annoying, but his character got good toward the climax and I think he'll mature into the sidekick role well.

Bring it on!!

By Brainstormer at 3:43 PM ON 06/16/09

I thought Chrystal Skull was a great movie, just not a great Indiana Jones movie. A movie with our whip wielding hero may not need Nazis, but it certainly doesn't need aliens. The franchise is better of with mystical relics of earth origin.

By Rich at 3:48 PM ON 06/16/09

I have to say, I just re-watched the Crystal Skull movie again (becuase my six year old had not seen it). It was a horrible, horrible movie. One of the worst movies of all time. It felt like such a sell out. The acting was horrible, the story was horrible. Just shouldn't have been made. It had aliens in it! Come on! Some things are better left as it was.

By somewherein72 at 4:06 PM ON 06/16/09

I have to agree; Kingdom of the Crystal Skull had few redeeming qualities. It felt uninspired; wooden acting in place, the plot all of it just felt so flat. It was great seeing Harrison Ford reprise the role again, I didn't think that his age played a big factor in me not liking it. I liked the action scenes, the chases and fight scenes are always great, but those only go so far. Also, I did enjoy how they handled some of the continuity aspects of Indy's history up to that point; it was great seeing him back in the classroom.

I shudder to think what they will dig up for another installment.

By Heystoppityou at 4:23 PM ON 06/16/09

If you think about each Indy film as representing a different religion, then Crystal Skull fits right in with the other three!

Lost Ark- Judaism
Temple of Doom- Hunduism
Last Crusade- Christianity
Crystal Skull- Scientology

...what's next!?

All that aside, they should have left it as a trilogy. Come on, Stevie, don't tell me you spent so much money you need to make reruns to pay the bills.

By jhawks1510 at 4:37 PM ON 06/16/09

I think a reboot is a good idea, and we can recast Shia as Indiana Jones. And it should take place in the future. And it should co-star Jenny McCarthy, Tara Reid, & Jessica Alba as the new Charlies Angels, and Barbara Streisand can play the monster.

By zosolias at 4:45 PM ON 06/16/09

The only good thing about skulls was Karen Allen.

By oddball at 5:04 PM ON 06/16/09

Crystal Skull was an ok movie, but far from being a perfect movie like it's prodeccessors.

Crystal Skull's weakness.... plot designed around aliens was too farfetched and felt like a copout. Like the writer couldn't think of anything better.

What Crystal Skull and all following Indiana Jones movies need is to be based around biblical myths. Temple of Doom didn't have this, but still the movie represented religious beliefs, which is what allows the Indy formula to work.

But by all means I never want to see anything about Dinosaurs, mutants, zombies, or anything that only science fiction can explain.

I heard that Indy 5 was supposed to be the final Indy and in fact was actually supposed to have been made years ago when Ford was still yound, but if it is still going to be the final Indy they had better give it a better story than Crystal Skull.

I wanted to see Connery return, but since that isn't happening can we at least have Marcus and Sallah in the last one. As well as the same actors doing the characters and not some replacement actor bullcrap.

And by the way Mac the character in Crystal Skull continuously telling Indy he was a spy then changed it to double agent then changed it again. That was the most ignorant thing ever. I don't care what his excuse is I don't want some idiot telling Indy he's a good guy when he's hanging with the bad guys and Indy believing it like some moron. Mac was annoying for what purpose does an annoying character have in an indy movie.

By smegforbrain at 5:07 PM ON 06/16/09

This news makes baby Jesus have a seizure.

By Jonas72 at 5:28 PM ON 06/16/09

Crystal Skull was a worthy Indy movie. I loved every second of it. It really felt like Indy was back.

I must say, it makes me laugh when I see people complain about aliens in the movie (which, by the way, were not aliens at all, but interdimensional beings! ;) ) being too far fetched. Hello? This is Indy we're talking about! How is it more far fetched than ghosts or spirits melting people (but not if you don't look at them)? Or a guy pulling your beating heart out of your chest and shows it to you? Or an old man guarding a room full of cups for several hundred years without going mad from boredom? Etc., etc... It's supposed to be far fetched, it's Indiana Jones, for crying out loud! Oh well, here's hoping they do another.

By Jonas72 at 5:34 PM ON 06/16/09

By the way, Oddball, sorry, no hope of Marcus Brody returning without being played by another actor, as Denholm Elliot died back in 1992. I'd love to see Rhys-Davies return as Sallah in the next one, though, or Connery, for that matter. Ford and Connery had a really good chemistry going as father and son, which I'd love to see again.

By jose at 6:08 PM ON 06/16/09

I guess sometimes people just don't want their action heroes to grow old but, whats wrong with an old Indiana Jones? why can't he be an old wise man? you know, I kinda like the idea of a new Indiana Jones Movie, and what would be even more interesting is to pair him up with Brandon Fraser, his character in the Mummy movies is reminiscent of Indiana Jones, just a thought I guess

By a different tim at 6:11 PM ON 06/16/09

I'll have to agree with some of the negative comments especially the pacing, it was way to quick. Also they relied way to heavily on CGI as usual. However I would welcome another movie because I did enjoy the crystal skull a little. I just hope they get back to using real locations and slow the pace down a bit so we can get that feeling back when we were watching the older ones.

By James at 6:34 PM ON 06/16/09

I thought the ending of Crystal Skull kind of set it up for Shia to take over as Indy. I could be wrong. And as far as CS stinking, I didn't see that version. The version I saw was an aging Indy still kicking behind and taking names. Aliens/Interdimensional beings? Yes, I can handle that, too, because this is a fantasy movie, not non-fiction. Let your minds wander a little and enjoy what it gets into!

By Crystal Skull was good at 7:00 PM ON 06/16/09

What did you expect with Crystal Skull? It was another Indiana Jones adventure. Not the best, not the worst, but good. I don't want a blockbister epic, I want another Crystal Skull- another Indy tale.

By scifi fan at 8:26 PM ON 06/16/09

I enjoyed the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. No, it was not a great movie, and I really wasn't thrilled with the interdimensional beings in it, but overall it was entertaining, and I was very impressed with how well Harrison Ford handled the stunts and the actions scenes. He may have been 65 or so but he looked good. And yes, our heroes age, but seeing them back in action is still awesome. I would like to see one more Indy film; I guess I just want to see as many adventures with Indy as possible before it is too late.

By Homedude47 at 8:47 PM ON 06/16/09

Whoever called Crystal Skull the worst movie of all time must have a shallow knowledge of film history. Watch "Doc Savage" starring Ron Ely and "Message from Space" starring Richard Thomas and then try to tell me what's the worst.

By phronq at 9:24 PM ON 06/16/09

DO NOT WANT

By Scanner at 10:05 PM ON 06/16/09

As long as Harrison Ford is in it, I'll go see Indiana Jones movies until they stop making them. Shia was a good addition, but he's not Indiana Jones... but to be fair, he's not supposed to be. I found his character interesting, but purely as an addition.

The only part about IJ4 that I found ridiculous was the motorcycle scene in the college, and the reason is it was obvious the stuntman replacing Ford wasn't Ford, mostly due to the horrible wig the stunt guy was wearing.

Other than that, I enjoyed IJ4, and look forward to IJ5. :)

By Syberwolf at 10:40 PM ON 06/16/09

I didn't mind that Harrison Ford was an older Indiana Jones, what I did mind that it was such an awful movie. The special effects and stunts were crap, I actually didn't believe what I was seeing when I was watching it. I honestly feel directors and all involved were making fun of the fans, like lets put whatever stupid things we can think of in the movie and I bet the fans will still eat it up. From some of the posts I have read, I guess they will. They had a nuke frig, a guy named "Mutt"..really? and a Tarzan scene....I would say they need to stop and end it, but they already did that

By ssattbb at 11:49 PM ON 06/16/09

I read a novelization of Indiana Jones finding Noah's Ark. Run with it! Bring back the Nazis. Make it the movie thee fans WANT to see!

By scifi-ED at 5:40 AM ON 06/17/09

INDY 4 was good, if you block out the fact that it was an Indiana Jones movie.

The villain sucked. Sucked so much, that I can't even remember who it was.

And no one has yet mentioned the most ridiculous moment in the movie. Shia swinging from trees with the monkeys. I literally said in the movie, PLEASE DON'T DO THAT.

Loving the franchise I want more, but with more Ford, less Shia and a great villain.

And can someone please tell me how Shia is going to continue the series. His character isn't educated, How is he going to walk into a temple and read symbols, or know about ancient cultures. The only way its possible is if they wait 10 or 15 years and let us believe that he was inspired by his dad to go to school.

And two more weeks till SYFY, are you going to redo the website, I hope so, that way you can fix this captcha.

By Soren B at 6:13 AM ON 06/17/09

For me this is simple math

Shia LaBeouf and no Harrison Ford = Don't spend money on the cinema and download from the Internet instead.

C'mon, don't be a hypocrite...I know you're all thinking it. :-)

By rodee at 6:34 AM ON 06/17/09

Crystal Skull was okay, that I agree. But if another movie is coming. Then I would like to see it in the same vein as "Last Crusade". I would like to see Harrison in the Sean Connery role, and Shia as "Junior'.

By hyperwraith at 7:22 AM ON 06/17/09

If Spielberg is the one coming up with the story this time, I'll give it a shot. But PLEASE keep George Lucas as far away from this thing as possible.

By antodav at 7:26 AM ON 06/17/09

I'll take Russian Communists over German Nazis as the main villains in any movie, much less Indiana Jones, any day. Crystal Skull may not have been quite as good as the old ones but it was still good, and the switch in villains is no small reason for why that was the case. Nazis are cliché and tiresome; writers use Nazis as villains when they can't bother being original.

Soviet soldier (to Indy): "Any last words?"
Indy: "I like Ike!"

Awesome.

By Old Guard at 12:41 PM ON 06/17/09

Okay, Indy 4 had some problems, granted. Did it suck as many take a peculiar pleasure saying - no. Spielberg and Lucas may have stretched a few things a bit. The atomic bomb, refrigerator part, overkill. They should have known better. And the Tarzan stuff. Whew, were they drinking? Other than that The Crystal Skull was fine, harmless entertainment. But this idea that Harrison Ford is too old to do another Indiana Jones and Shia LeBeouf should take over is crazy. Here's why: First of all it is ageism, pure and simple. Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones. You just can't replace Indiana Jones with a younger 'Mutt'. Doesn't work. However a story of Indiana Jones mentoring 'Mutt', the two of them, getting to know one another through an adventure, works. An Indy five works, if it builds on the previous four films but the idea of throwing Ford on the scrap heap because he's not young is wasteful. Le Beouf is a fine actor, nothing against him at all, but he cannot fill the shoes of Harrison Ford in this franchise. Also and this is a biggie, there is a reason, a lot of films featuring much older actors have done reasonable well recently, it's because older actors carry a measure of credibility about them, a lot of younger actors lack. They're high cheek bone faces do not carry a measure of life experience in them. You're walking down a dark alley and you come across an annoyed Shia Le Beouf or a scowling Harrison Ford, who are you more willing to step aside for? Be honest, now. No question Le Beouf may be scrappy but Ford is the one who is going to put a whupping on you. I would like to see another Indiana Jones film with Harrison Ford, Karen Allen, and Shia Le Beouf. Have someone like James Rollins or Llincoln Child pitch in on the script. There is a lot of potential story there. What I fear is one day all movies will feature characters under 25 as the leads and stories will no longer be about balanced context, as cut to the chase eye candy. That's far worse, than another Indiana Jones film.

By crazyokie at 1:06 PM ON 06/17/09

I'm torn. My first pass on Indy 4 was that it was a weak story with poor pacing and the music was not up to John William's usual spectactular soundtracks. Second viewing (on DVD) was far more favorable; I'd put it ahead of Temple of Doom although I do wish they could edit out the swinging monkeys scene. I think it was primarily a problem of it just taking far, far too long to come up with a story idea. Still, if they do manage to get a good story....Harrison, Steven and George all swore that "Mutt" would never replace "Indy", let's hope they hold to that promise. Still don't understand Mr. Spielberg's fascination with LeBeouf; so far I have not been impressed.

By jb at 3:02 PM ON 06/17/09

And I can DEFINITELY tell you that I wont be in line to see this proposed piece of cr@p.

By Snake at 5:05 PM ON 06/17/09

Kingdom of the Skulls did suck if you match it up with the other INDY movies. I heard Lucas was the one pitching the idea about Skulls and aliens in the first place. Leave Muttonhead Le Beouf and George Lucas out of the next Indy flim and throw in Noah's Ark and you got a swan song winner for the franchise.

By WannaBeatle at 6:02 PM ON 06/17/09

I'm ok with another Indy film.

I hate to say this, but Lucas shouldn't touch it at all and leave all the creative parts to real writers. I'd be completely happy if he left his name on it, though.

I''m curious as to the other script for Indy 4 that everyone ok'd but Lucas. I wonder if might be worth using that as the next story.

By Rob at 5:38 PM ON 06/18/09

No, no, you've got it all wrong. The next Indiana Jones movie wil be a remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Or is it a re-imagining? Whatever.

By mr m at 3:22 AM ON 07/03/09

how can anyone not enjoy an indy film yes he has aged but come on it was still a very enjoyble film and i have never seen a fitter guy than ford, as for a new instalment i just cant wait bring it on please please PLEASE

Everyone is crazy. Skulls was far fetched because of the aliens? Yeah and a magical god box that opens up and melts people or cult that pulls peoples hearts out or even a magical cup that kept a knight alive for 700 years and heals bullet wounds just by pouring water on isn't far fetched?

Come on now all the movies are very entertaining and as far as I can tell that what movies are supposed to be.

I love all the Indiana Jones movies and welcome another set of them with Shia LaBeouf as the star.

It is amazing how some of us who were kids when the first 3 movies came out can't accept anything new being done with those characters.

Come on guys, change is good. And I know my kids will enjoy the new movies as much as I enjoyed the old ones.
