So weird it might work: Michael Clayton writer to rewrite Red Dawn remake

So weird it might work: \<i\>Michael Clayton\<\/i\> writer to rewrite \<i\>Red Dawn\<\/i\> remake

The resistance is shaping up, Wolverines!

First came news of the growing cast for MGM/UA's upcoming remake of John Milius' paranoid-wonderful 1984 Cold War action thriller Red Dawn

Now Latino Review reports that Oscar-nominated screenwriter Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) will rewrite the remake. (Jed to Russian commie: "Do I look like I'm negotiating?")

Here's what the site said:

Not surprising considering that Dan Bradley, the director of the remake, was the second unit director of the Jason Bourne films, which Gilroy penned.

Gilroy has recently delivered a 107 page draft dated 06-01-09. The remake was penned by Carl Ellsworth and Jeremy Passmore and based on the 1984 Cold War-era film co-written and directed by John Milius. ...

The story is about a group of teenagers who form an impromptu insurgency when their town is invaded by Chinese and Russian soldiers.

Set to begin filming in September, the film is scheduled to hit theaters Sept. 24, 2010.

Instead of Russians and Cubans, they should use 'Axis of evil' troopers.

I never viewed the original film as "paranoid". It was filmed during the cold war and even used cuba as part of the invasion owing to the fact they allowed missile installations to be installed in the late 50's/very early 60s. It will be interesting to see how he does this new film and make it a believable story.

The axis of evil powers wouldn't work as an enemy in the film as none of them can send troops across the world fast enough to replace the losses incurred while trying to fight behind enemy lines. It's one thing to be the less well armed guerrilla force on the "home field", but when your replacements are coming from the other side of the world you're going to be in trouble.

Can't wait to see the film.

On a lighter note: I'm really glad that Jane44 is a nice man and that he found a beautiful and gentle woman, and happiness!!

Must be targeted at older audiences, most of the younger people I know today have no idea of what it was like to live in the Cold War Era. Can't see they will find much interest in this beyond SFX and action. I loved the original, but it may be to "period specific" to really make a good re-release.

Agree with JAFS. Today's teens will revel in the the exploits of the teen resistance fighters. That always was a big draw in the original film, but beyond that the overall message of the film will be lost on them.
Red Dawn was a film for it's time and not just a fun "what if" romp. The director, an unappolgetic (of which I have no problem) conservative Republican took a hypothetical war game scenario and made it into a gritty and pretty realistic (for the times) motion picture that screams "patriotism, self sacrifice" and perhaps is a bit "jingoistic" more than todays audience would understand with its 24hour news and politically correct lifestyle. I have a feeling the story is best left un-remade.

Not very plausible. All the Chinese have to do now to take over the USA is just to foreclose....

By Fred at 10:22 PM ON 06/18/09

Uhhh sorry reviewer but there were NO repeat NO Chinese among the invaders. As other have pointed out the invaders were Russian and Cuban. As a matter of fact the Red Chinese were US allies in the film (not surprising since at the time ther was a little border war going on between them and the USSR) One of the few good lines in the film cocerns the biplay between on of the teen and a pilot they rescue.

Pilot: ...just us and a couple of million Chinese.
Kid: I thought there were 800 million Chinese.
Pilot: There were

I think I was a teenager when I first saw "Red Dawn" (maybe I was younger, idk). If Hollywood should "remake" it, make it a sequel of sorts usings todays news reports, because no teenager today would get what life was like back in the 80's (heck, I can barely remember) & I'm 30.
People in their 30's, 40's, & 50's etc. etc. can remember the threat of nuclear war, & invasion. But to me when I saw it, it was just a movie & I liked it but I also imagined the possibiltes of it coming true, & that was & is truely frightening!!!
