As usual, all things about ABC's Lost are hush-hush, lest any posters on the Fuselage message boards get wind of spoilers, but rumors persist that long-departed cast members such as Maggie Grace may return for at least one appearance in the show's sixth and final season.
First things first, though: Are the regulars still coming back? Season five ended with a bomb exploding in the past, possibly erasing the entire present of the show.
Michael Emerson, who plays Ben Linus, confirmed that at least he is still an active part of the show. "My understanding is that I am," Emerson said in an exclusive interview last week at the Saturn Awards in Burbank, Calif. "For how much of season six, that's a good question."
Yes, more cryptic answers from the actor who plays the most cryptic character on the show. He even kiboshed my theory about erasing the present timeline. If the bomb prevented the crash of Oceanic Flight 815, seeing everybody live happily ever after wouldn't earn high ratings for the finale.
"I could see why you might think that, but from my perspective as playing that character who arrived late on that show, it doesn't sound terribly dramatic unless there's something in that equation that I don't quite get," Emerson said. "I'm just curious about what dramatic paths we'll follow."
One dramatic path might be further explorations of the mysterious Jacob. The fifth-season finale revealed Jacob as a corporal presence, but still not quite human. Ben stabbed him, intending to kill Jacob. "I'm still not sure that he's a person like you and [me]," Emerson said. "I'm still not sure he's a person like Ben. Is he killable? I don't know. We haven't been to his funeral yet, so I don't know. I don't know where all that's going."
Season six might finally give us more Ben flashbacks. We've seen Ben in flash-forwards, sending Sayid on assassination missions and trying to shoot Desmond. We've met Young Ben in the past, but we have yet to see much of Ben as an adult.
"What constitutes a proper Ben flashback?" Emerson said. "There are some gaps in Ben's bio, and I think we may look backward a couple of times this season. I'm just guessing."
Don't expect any big changes for Ben, though. While audiences have seen him go from Henry Gale to the evil leader of the Others to a sympathetic young boy, Emerson has always acted as Ben and will continue to do so. "Ben has always seemed straightforward to me, and I don't think Ben has changed much over time," he said. "I think audience perceptions of Ben [have] changed."
In a separate interview at the Saturns, Lost executive producer Carlton Cuse told a group of reporters that he would not answer any questions about the coming season, not even with vague, dodgy answers. But he promised that he and fellow executive producer Damon Lindelof will be ready to answer questions for fans attending the Lost panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego next month.
"I hope you're coming to Comic-Con," Cuse said in a group interview. "Traditionally, Damon and I go into radio silence this time of year, and then at Comic-Con, we will answer questions. We want to give the fans a chance to speculate and theorize about what they saw in the finale, so we don't want to kind of be interpreting the finale at this point. Come Comic-Con, we'll have a few more things to say about what's going to happen in season six."
Somebody please ask whether we're going to see what happened if the plane never crashed, so Cuse will give us an answer. "Perhaps, or it will be evaded in more elaborate detail," he said.
Lost returns in January 2010 on ABC.

"Still care about Lost?"
There are plenty of people who still follow this show and are looking forward to this final season.
By TheDoctor at 8:44 AM ON 06/29/09
Agreed, tati. And we already had a Ben flashback episode. "Dead is Dead" showed us more of Ben's adult life during the time that Widmore was was the leader of the Others. Looks like someone needs to do their homework... ;)

Yeah, SciFi Wire has really gone down hill since they started editorializing EVERYTHING with people who clearly don't know much about the subjects they cover.
By cifaretto at 10:09 AM ON 06/29/09
what the hell does it mean "still care about Lost?"
of course we care, there are millions of Lost fans all around the world.
It's the only good sci-fi show left, one of the few good shows left on tv.
By Kevin at 11:02 AM ON 06/29/09
Now, "Still care about Heroes?" might be a better question.
By lazyeyedave at 11:29 AM ON 06/29/09
'till care about ABC's Lost'- more than those who still care about 'SyFy' or Sci-Fi-Uk or whatever the channel is thinking of re-inventing itself into these days.
Way to go in alienating those of us who enjoy good genre TV, SciFiWire!
I guess bashing those who enjoy a series that's still doing well 5 seasons on is easy copy for some poor scififwire hack.
By tati at 11:43 AM ON 06/29/09
I'm not ready for Heroes to be over, just yet!
Lost is on ABC, BUT--Heroes is on NBC...they aren't likely to bash one of their 'own.'
You know, I bet none of us would mind a gig where we can just surf the internet for news that other sites have, and then repost it in a blog :P

Ben to be the hero????

I have a question... Still care about SCI-FI in a post-BSG / Stargate TV world?
By jb at 6:59 PM ON 06/29/09
Got my 4 day comic con badge ready. Cant wait for the panel!!

What in the world would make you think people don't care about LOST anymore? The inside joke amongst the sizeable world-wide audience that is as steadfast as always is that those who have dropped out just can't handle the story curves anymore. There has been no decline in quality for LOST since the beginning of the show, and the fact that it survives with a healthy net demo, powerful world wide brand appeal, and the untarnished respect of film and literary scholars around the world should be celebrated. Show some respect.

They need to discuss the Island more along with more Dharma, Ben and Jacob stories… these are a must I think for total closure of the series. I liked Season 5 but I though they would have focused more on these things but didn't really… they (the writers) I think had to spend too much time dumbing down the time-travel issues (they should have kept it like they explained Desmond's issues) for the masses who kept bitching about it being too difficult to follow.
By Carl at 10:32 PM ON 06/29/09
STILL CARE! Hell yea. Sorry if lost is too intelligent for todays "getter done!" society. We will keep our lost. You can go back to watching king of queens.
By ... at 11:08 PM ON 06/29/09
Still care? Pfft. It's all I watch anymore, since there's nothing else worth watching in the festering cesspool that TV has become. I'll be sad when it's over.
By imani08 at 11:15 PM ON 06/29/09
I don't normally post on random sites, but I had to add my $0.03 (inflation y'know) on this title. Yeah, LOST is hard, but those of us who 'get it' do care. If the author can't follow the twists and turns of the story line, maybe he should stick to something a little easier, that doesn't require so much brain power, like a game show, or a reality show.
Upsetting a fan base like the one LOST has is a dangerous thing. Watch out...

Here's the problem with science fiction these days. Sci-fi has turned into the action-packed, brainless, buck rogers homage in the past decade. In the distance, we left the slow, taut, and psychological study that was best highlighted by Alien, Blade Runner, 2001, etc. Lost, while not directly influenced by sci-fi, is reminiscent of that spirit. If a television station called 'SCI-FI' is questioning the last great hope for the genre, don't you think said station has lost its touch?
p.s. Moon is a pretty good example of sci-fi coming back to its strongest form. Check it out people.

I'm from Brazil and I'm very embarrassed whit this kind of question? Of course, I care about Lost and I think a lot of people do too. For me, it's the greatest show of all time in television history. And every year it get better. It's a shame for you write about a great sci fi show like this. Never think this again. Lost rules.
By tati at 9:42 AM ON 06/30/09
@eric and others--
That's because, as of tomorrow, they will no longer be SciFi channel....they will be Syfy. No longer a genre channel, they aspire to be a 'lifestyle' channel.
What lifestyle? Good question.
By Dabbygag at 10:09 AM ON 06/30/09
Still care about ABC's Lost? This is why the article is tilted this.... this is from the examiner....and For the record? Of course I care about Lost, IT IS the best show on TV, without question.
Sci-Fi Wire is “Powered by SciFi” one of the cable networks owned by Universal Studios who also owns ABC’s competitor station, NBC. Perhaps that is how this article managed to make it to press with this headline.
By lindyxmjh at 10:17 AM ON 06/30/09
People, it was a question that was supposed to invoke the "heck yeah" in you Lost fans to get you to read the article, but I guess using rhetoric in an article title is what's really lost to you guys.
By Taiso at 12:10 PM ON 06/30/09
Well, to beat a dead horse:
Yes, we still care about LOST. Best show on tv and it was better than BSG (of which I am also a fan), so take that 'SyFy'.
Now, as to the most important part of the actual article: will the principle characters return for season six?
OF COURSE THEY WILL.
Who would want to watch a sixth season of LOST without Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Locke, Hurley, Jin, Sun, Sayid, Ben and 'Smokey?'
There are way too many plot threads to resolve with these characters for them to just drop them from the show in order to focus on Jacob's past and the mythology of the island. They'd be making a HUGE mistake in expecting us to simply forget five seasons of human dramaw in lieu of learning about the island. The island's mythology is important to the fans, but only insofar as it is interwoven with the characters themselves.
For me, personally, the things I miss the most are the human elements that existed in the first four seasons. Despite the show's genre trappings, the focus was always on believable human emotions and responses to situations both mundane and surreal.
I didn't like the way season five's time travel escapades handled the plot twists because there didn't seem to be the customary amount of story decompression that made the characters so likeable and believable. With season five, things just moved so fast that I had a harder time accepting the decisions the characters made as believable responses. And one of the things that makes LOST so special is that despite the bizarre circumstances the characters find themselves in,m their reactions are very human. It's why I can take the show seriously and it's why I put it above BSG. I 'bought' the characters as real people based on the writing on the first four seasons. In the fifth season, the storytelling focus was more on advancing the plot than dealing with the characters and their still unresolved issues. I hope we see the sixth season bring back to the characters because they are what makes the show more than just another genre offering.
Speaking of which, I've had enough of the 'Jack Shepard, man of faith' experiment. I miss the OLD Jack. The guy that got angry at people and used his doctor's authoritarian voice to take command of situations. Jack made some mistakes for sure, but I always loved and respected his fighting spirit and his inability to give in or give up. With Jack, it wasn't just that he was a stubborn guy. He just didn't have it in him to walk away from something. He was psychologically incapable of doing that. It sucks that the only way he could learn how to do that was by being utterly defeated by his circumstances.
Is this the only thing the writers could think to do with one of the two central characters of the show? Jack had a certain mystique about him in the way that he did things in seasons 1-4, and I really miss that guy.
I'd like to see the old Jack return, but tempered by what he's been through since going back to the world. As it is, what we presently have is a guy that's been completely changed into a different character. I like how Juliette and Kate were telling him he's become less than what he was.
So much hinges on Jack. So much of the show is about him, whether the Jack haters out there want to admit it or not. The writers need to restore him so that he can bring the show full circle. He is the fulcrum of LOST. Without him, the show itself is 'lost.'
Oh, and Hurley seemed like a non-presence in season five. I know the guy can't do much more than be comic relief but many of LOST's best episodes were centered around Hurley's issues. The 'repair the van' episode was one of the best, most uplifting episodes of the series. Hurley can still make an impact, and I think that I've seen enough of the 'soup kitchen' version.
By neoloki at 12:17 PM ON 06/30/09
Rhetoric? Maybe, probably, but usually when you use rhetoric their is some context for it: It has a reason and/or purpose. This is just mildly insulting and coming from a network that has sh&t for programing is fairly annoying. Seeing as season 5 of Lost is only in pre-order and is selling like crazy the worldwide brand that is Lost is stronger than ever.
By neoloki aka Ben'sbleedingkidney at 12:34 PM ON 06/30/09
No, old Jack got incredibly annoying by season 3. The scene where he was pulling on the chains and Juliet is telling him to stop and he keeps doing it (Hydra station ep1 s.3) was quintessential old Jack and my only desire in the world was for Pickett to put a gun to his forehead and pull the trigger. Season 5 was very refreshing for Jack and I truely enjoyed the character.
I think you are way way off, talso. Sorry but season 5 was great and the pacing perfect. The story is changing and if you want old Jack and Hurley starting a VW bus watch season 3.
By _Maltheus_ at 12:39 PM ON 06/30/09
Lost is about 100 times better than Heroes or BSG, so yeah, we still care. I'll admit that I came close to giving up on it in season 3 (and I know a lot of people who stopped watching completely during that borefest), but it picked right back up in S4 and the last season was arguably the strongest yet. It's easily the best thing on the big four networks and nothing on sci-fi is even in the same league anymore. The title should read, "still care about Syfy (since we no longer have a reason to watch it)?"
By _Maltheus_ at 1:39 PM ON 06/30/09
I hated Jack with a passion for most of the show, peaking with the moment he tried to shoot Locke (while lying on his back defenseless). He was always throwing punches or pulling guns. And you gotta love how in the S2 finale, he led his buddies into a trap without telling them until it was too late (because he had an idiotic plan that he wanted to force them into). This past season was the only time I could tolerate and even liked him at times. So I don't want the old Jack back unless it's to kill him off.
By Smokey81286 at 10:57 PM ON 06/30/09
Jack is good character because he polarizes people. I personally like Jack and I think his flaws make him a more interesting character. Plus the Jack/Locke dynamic is always cool.
Of course I like all the characters on the show these days. I never really understood the petty character wars people get in to on LOST forums.
