If you thought Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was trippy, wait until you see how Tim Burton has re-interpreted the fantasy classic in the new images that appear in USA Today, after the jump.
The newspaper is publishing concept art and new publicity images for Burton's Alice in Wonderland, which debuts on March 5, 2010. Here's how the newspaper reports it:
"It has been Burton-ized" is how producer Richard Zanuck describes the director's vision of the Lewis Carroll classic. Many elements are familiar, from the enigmatic Caterpillar (Alan Rickman) to the fierce Jabberwock (Christopher Lee). But none has been presented in this sort of visually surreal fashion. "We finished shooting in December after only 40 days," Zanuck says. Now the live action is being merged with CG animation and motion-capture creatures, and then transferred into 3-D.

Look! It's Willy Wonka's evil twin!
Seriously though, I thought that was Elijah Wood as the Mad Hatter. Tricksy hobbitses ...

They were great together in Sweeney Todd so I can’t wait to see it!

Depp and Bonham-Carter in a Burton film. Who would have guessed? *//sarcasm. It looks surreal, and I'm excited for it, but I think Burton should branch out from casting his best friend and wife all the time.

I love Alice in Wonderland the book but most of the big-screen interpretations I must say don't quite work. Not a fan of Burton as a director - he's all art direction and no skill at pacing... but i must say these costumes and visuals look wonderful.

That IS Elijah Wood as the Mad Hatter

I love Tim Burton, Helena, and of course Johhny and Anna. Alice is one of my fave all time movies. Just looking at the pictures it looks like it's goi9ng to be a big hit. It's another side it.s dark and if it comes from Tim it's going to be wonderful. Can't wait to see it.

Much of the work could be derived from the Alice in Wonderland PC game. Weirdly good.

gotta admit, the hatter does look like Elijah Wood and not Johnny Depp, someone got it wrong. Hope it's not us.

It may look like Elijah Wood, but trust us, it's Johnny Depp

This is going to be great. It's very surreal, very askew, very true to Lewis Caroll.

That is insane! Johnny Depp does look like Elijah Wood in that pic....lol. Cannot wait for this film!!!!

Depp is a chameleon.
I'm slightly creeped out by this whole idea :-O
(which means I'll probably be watching it lol)

This will be a classic just like The Wizard of Oz.

O M G This movie is gonna be a trip! Johnny and Helena will take it over the top! Both are amazing actors!

Jamie, I couldn't agree more. Burton is a fantastic visual and conceptual artist whose movies are dramatically flat. He should come up with ideas for movies and design their sets and costumes and then hand them off to someone else to direct. One exception: Sweeney Todd, which was great.

Elijah was FRODO! ...among other roles he's played.
man, that make-up is awesome. Depp could be Wood's brother.

Is it me, or does Depp look a bit cross-eyed in that pic?
