New trailer for \<em\>The Box\<\/em\>: Could Richard Kelly push our buttons after all?

A new trailer was released today for Richard Kelly's The Box, the director's follow-up to his critically panned 2007 film Southland Tales. Will The Box help him regain the buzz earned by his 2001 debut, Donnie Darko, which became a cult classic?

For clues, check out the trailer after the jump.

The movie, starring Cameron Diaz, James Marsden and Frank Langella, is about a struggling couple who receive an intriguing offer from a mysterious man. If they press a button on the strange box they have been given, they will receive $1 million—but someone they don't know will die.

The Box opens Oct. 30.

This is one of my fave short stories of all time. I'm going to see this movie but I suspect it works MUCH BETTER as a short story.

This could be like SLEEPY HOLLOW. It could stand on its own if you pretend the original source material didn't exist but if you're a purest, it will be awful. (The trailer does look cool.)

I'll be along for that ride. This is what dangerous scifi is supposed to be. Horrific human choices. Some people would just push the button consequences be damned. Others wouldn't out of moralistic reasons. While the most enjoyable to watch will be the ones that agonize over it.

This is going to be an exciting movie.

i have to admit that this premise COULD be done very well! i just hope the family scenes aren't interminable, especially around the dinner table lol.

The short story on which this is based, "Button, Button" by the legendary Richard Matheson, is awesome, and this flick looks like it could be a decent interpretation of the source. However, there's no way that Cameron Diaz will surpass Mare Winningham's performance in the version of the story that was dramatized in 1986 for the 1st season of TV's THE TWILIGHT ZONE redux. Ms. Winningham's nuanced performance perfectly captured the ambivalence and paranoia of the situation, and frankly, Ms. Diaz just doesn't have that kind of skill or range.

How can the short story be stretched out to make a two hour movie?

By urson at 9:51 AM ON 06/26/09

Golem: they won't have to 'stretch' anything. The detail and description in a typical short story would take a good two hours to develop visually.

In this case, however, they are liberally expanding on the original story, adding characters, subplots, etc.

As I expect they would have to do.

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button was original a short story and it was nearly 3 hrs.

Its probably much easier to put a short story to film than a novel where they have to cut out parts of the story. Like Angels and Demons a fantastic book but a very under whelming film.
