When co-creator and executive producer Marc Guggenheim's ABC show Eli Stone was canceled, he went into mourning. "It was tough," he told SCI FI Wire exclusively. "It was a tough few months there as I came to terms with the fact that the show wasn't coming back. You invest three years of life in something, and it's tricky."
The series, about a lawyer who has visions and begins to believe he just might be a prophet, was canceled after its ninth episode aired at the end of 2008, with four completed episodes that were never shown. That travesty is about to be rectified: ABC will air the final four episodes of Eli Stone's second season beginning this Saturday at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
"I have to say these four are among my favorite of the whole series run, quite frankly," Guggenheim said. "I just feel like, ironically, we ended up getting canceled right around the time we were really hitting on all cylinders." (Guggenheim co-created the series with Greg Berlanti.)
First up is "Sonoma," a road-trip episode in which the characters travel to wine country in northern California. "It's our comedy episode," Guggenheim said. "Chaos ensues. It's really, really funny. There is a Saturday Night Live actress, Michaela Watkins, who plays an ex-lover of Matt's, and it's a fun episode. We have a big musical number set to the tune of 'Red, Red Wine' that we shot on location in a vineyard. And there's a major development in the Maggie/Eli relationship. Major! ... It was funny. When people were always asking me, 'Well, what's going to happen with Maggie and Eli?' I would always say, 'Check out episode 10.' And, of course, episode 10 never aired. But now it will."
"It was designed to be a lighthearted episode, but it also resolves the cliffhanger from episode nine that was the last episode to air with Eli's nose bleeding. So we get to pay that cliffhanger off several months later," Guggenheim added with a laugh.
Then Jamey Sheridan guest-stars in "Mortal Combat," an episode that Guggenheim co-wrote. "In Eli's visions he ends up in ancient Rome, and hence the title 'Mortal Combat,' because gladiators figure prominently in the episode," he said. "It is all about the news media. It's a really interesting exploration of what's happened to the nightly news in our society."
The third episode to air is "Tailspin," which Guggenheim feels is "ridiculously timely." It was written around the time of the economic collapse, "and I was very, very angry that all the CEOs were getting paid bonuses," he said. "So what happens is a CEO gets fired, he along with 150 of his employees. The 150 employees get pink slips; the CEO gets a gold parachute. And I always thought, 'Why can't they sue the CEO to get his gold parachute—to get his money?' Part of Eli is wish fulfillment, so that's what happens. Eli sues to get some payback for the people who lost their jobs. So it is super, super timely. It was very prescient when we wrote, and it's very current now."
The series finale, "Flight Path," involves a plane crash. "For those people familiar with the pilot and fans of the show, we return to the Himalayas," Guggenheim said. "That was in the very first episode. So there's a sense of closure with that last episode. We returned to the scene of the crime, as it were."
Will this very last episode of Eli Stone add up to a satisfying finale for viewers? "Yes, it will," promised Guggenheim. "We wrote it knowing that we were on the bubble, so we wrote it to work like it could be a mid-season finale or it could be a series finale. It has a real satisfying sense of closure."
While Guggenheim has moved on to his new ABC series FlashForward, he's thrilled these four episodes of Eli Stone will finally find an audience. "I have to say the worst part about being canceled was the possibility that these episodes wouldn't get aired. Because, first and foremost, a lot of very talented, hardworking people gave their all to write, produce and film these episodes," said Guggenheim. "Especially episode 13, 'Flight Path,' because that was produced when we knew we were canceled. We had written it beforehand, but it was actually filmed around the time we learned of our cancellation, and yet no one phoned anything in. You see the episode, and you see the level of ambition from the plane crash to the Himalayas to everything in between, and you go, 'Wow! That was everyone trying to leave on the best note possible.' I'm just really glad that everyone's hard work is going to get a chance to shine."
And there's one other thing. Something he'd like to say to the viewers who followed Eli Stone through two seasons. "Just thank you for all your support," he said. "Thanks for watching. Thank you for posting. Thank you for creating Web sites. I've always said that I would rather have the number of viewers that we had—even though it wasn't enough to keep us on the air—I would rather have the number of viewers that we had with all of them loving the show as they did, than three times the number of viewers—while that number might have kept us on the air—that didn't care about the show as much as all the people who watched."
Eli Stone: The Complete Second Season DVD set will be released on Aug.18.

Thank you for Guggenheim's comments. I'll be looking for fanfiction sites and hoping to find more from Guggenheim on directions the show may have gone - Hopefully there will be a movie or miniseries in the future for those of us who want MORE. Also remember, ratings are hypothesis - you had more fans than you knew! thanks!

Consider me among the loyal fans of the show. I've been waiting patiently for the airing of the final episodes and am grateful to see it happening. The cancelation of Eli and Pushing Daisies was a sad event that should not have occurred to these two fine programs. Good luck to cast, crew and all that made these two shows possible.

Thank you for showing us these 4 episodes. We watched every week and truly enjoyed the entertainment and laughter this show brought to our home. We will certainly miss it.
By ecgordon at 7:06 PM ON 06/19/09
I would like to echo Guggenheim's comments by saying that I would much rather be a fan of excellent programming such as Eli Stone, even if it doesn't last long enough, rather than have to suffer through junk like According to Jim that lasted eight years for some reason, along with all the stupid, stupid reality and competition shows. To everyone involved with Eli Stone, kudos for a job truly well done (and I've already seen the final four, so I know what I'm talking about).

I hope so, but I won't hold my breath.

My heart breaks! ABC cancels quality such as "Eli" and keeps on adding brain-dead (pardon the reference!) "reality shows". Do they think that no one out there has intelligence?
By rula at 6:16 PM ON 06/22/09
Hi
Just wanted to say that Eli Stone is a great show that has a message of hope in every episode. I think Sci Fi should talk to the creators and continue airing Eli Stone and let the fan have a program that they all love. : )
By Melis at 12:26 AM ON 06/23/09
So glad DVR picked up Eli - I was away. Was so excited about the thought it was coming back! The family piled on the couch withthe popcorn. Why can't ABC or any othe rnetwork realize that some of us relly do enjoy the family oriented with a faith based under tone too it? Why does everything have to be sex and reality? Please ABC this was an Excellent show with great writers and actors! My kids loved it! Don't we want to get back to more family oriented shows? Things that bring familes together in front of the TV?
Blessing to all of Eli Stone! What an awesome powerfiul though provoking show! Now I get to go back flipping through all the garbage! Sad when Deadliest Cath with their filthy mouths is more entertaining than anything else on TV!
By Eli - our family will miss you -

Eli Stone is one of the best shows I have ever seen. I was away and missed the 1st of the last four episodes. I hope ABC runs it again. I was heartbroken when I found out that the show had been cancelled. I taped every episode and watched it 2 or 3 times.

So sad to see this awesome show go, but at least I've had some time to mourn myelf. Funny that it started as a fill in during the actors strike and took off when there was nothing else halfway decent to watch. I'm gonna miss it once the final episode airs. In case people have missed any of the final 4 episodes, just got to ABC's website and you can watch it for free. Hear the DVD's coming out on August 18th, so that's good news too!

I have followed this show since episode 1# I love this Eli Stone! I would love nothing more than to see it keep going! I hope that we do get a movie or the rumors of Sci Fi maybe, just maybe picking it up come true! There are more followers than Eli Stone gets credit for and I hope someone somewhere notices!!! Save Eli Stone!!
By kclay at 8:42 PM ON 07/05/09
Eli Stone was one of my favorite shows. It is more and more challenging to find shows that challenge the mind as well as the imagination on regular television these days. Thank you for creating this show. I will miss it!
By Loving Eli at 1:52 PM ON 07/06/09
Very sad to see the show go.... Was good clean family entertainment! & by reading the above comments, Pushing Daises as well, sad to see it go too!!
Sad to know that we won't know the future of Eli & Maggie from one of the earlier episodes and if it truly turns out that they marry and have children... Oh well, hopefully ABC can come up with a good replacement!
By wesbc at 7:28 PM ON 07/06/09
Can I hire Eli Stone to sue ABC for there stupidity. Just like the episode I just watch, let's sue the CEO of ABC. So many great show never got a chance to shine. John Doe, Firefly, and of course Eli Stone just to name a few.
By GreenBee at 2:02 AM ON 07/07/09
Have resolved to NEVER start watching another series on ABC--so cold-hearted, manipulative, and cash oriented are they; can count on their pulling the plug on any show that has an iota of intelligence and creativity, and appeals to thinking people. Other channels do it to some degree also, but ABC has the WORST track record!
By embee at 6:21 PM ON 07/08/09
I am so glad that the last 4 episodes are, at the least, being aired. However, I am still sad to see this really great program end. I appreciate reading this article online and Guggenheim's comments! It is really tough trying to find programs that mean something or make the viewer feel something. Initially, upon discovering the webisodes on abc that they had decided not to cancel the program. i was elated. however, after a little digging online....well, here i am writing that it was a brief moment of happy feelings....
By dede at 11:47 PM ON 07/11/09
What a great show- I looked forward to watching Eli Stone all week. The show will be greatly missed. Shame on ABC for cancelling it. I have been a loyal follower since the first show. I am at least grateful that we were able to see the ending and have closure. I am definitely buying the dvd set when it comes out. Bring back ELI STONE!!!!
By Don at 1:04 AM ON 07/12/09
I loved Eli Stone. It was Must See TV and to be honest one of the few shows I watched on ABC. I do hope one of the cable nets pick it up. I just watched the final episode. THey did a great job but I still want more.
By disney disappoints at 2:19 AM ON 07/12/09
with all the garbage on TV you cancelled a show with class, that a parent is not ashamed to watch with his child.
Shame on you ABC
By XFactordx at 6:59 AM ON 07/12/09
I have to agree with most. Eli Stone and Pushing Daisies were light among darkness in the world of TV. They were magical and brought so much to the imagination. So much happiness and emotion, all rolled up into one. Great writing, great acting, couldn't ask for anything more from a TV series. Both shows deserve to live on and should be picked up by another network, one that hasn't gone cold and turned to reality TV. I must say though that I'm impressed ABC released the final episodes of both series, so I thank them for that.
By katydidit1269 at 3:40 PM ON 07/12/09
I don't know about the rest of you but when I watched Eli Stone, the commercials could not end fast enough. That show was so heartfelt and uplifitng, I felt time and space would stop. The emotions that show managed to evoke, I find it insane that it got cancelled and I feel as if I am in mourning now that it's over. I wrote to the ABC executives and never got one reply. How they can toss a show that generates such a feel good feeling is beyond my comprehension. Involving God in a show, but not in a In Your Face Believe What We Want You To Believe, kind of way. Sad, very Sad. I sincerely hope another network will pick up this show. I will be waiting patiently, bring back our Eli Stone!

Sending this off tomorrow:
Robert Iger
Executive Complaints
Walt Disney Company
5005 Buena Vista Street
Burbank, CA 91521-0001
July 12, 2009
Dear Mr Iger,
Let me first let you know I write this physical letter to you today, because all too often when communication like mine is sent in email form, it tends to be “over looked” or worse just simply deleted. Second, I'd like to share a quote with you. “When you believe in a thing, believe in it all the way, implicitly and unquestionable.” No truer words have ever been uttered by the founding father of the company for which you now run, Walt Disney himself.
For many of your brands, my wife and I would be considered right in the middle of your most important demographic, 25-54. We both are middle income earners and own our own home. We purchase cars every three to four years, and finance very little by way of credit cards and both enjoy a modicum of success in our chosen careers. We work hard for what we have, and share what we do with our community, in both our time and our talents.
One of many forms of entertainment we both enjoy is television, and for years we both have been extremely brand loyal to ABC TV for various reasons. One has been and continues to be the journalistic excellence of ABC News. We watch it every night over dinner. We also have stuck with most of the programming on during prime time. However, tonight is a sad night. We finally watched (recorded on TIVO mind you) the final episode of a show that we had grown to love. That show is Eli Stone.
Before you file this under hate mail for canceled shows, please hear us out because it involves our decision to not believe any longer. This goes against everything Walt Disney believed in, and sadly, ABC is demonstrating to us why we can't believe any further. I say this because when you as a company invest in a product like Eli Stone, you promote it so much to us, the viewers, to the point where you want us to make a physical commitment to watch them and to support the advertisers. You seduce us if you will, ask us to but only for a moment, suspend disbelief for many hours and invest what little free time we have to spend it with you, your company and it's advertisers. ABC's decision to pull the plug on something so special to the very people you've courted so fiercely, has led us to change our hearts and minds as far as what and who we choose to invest our attention, hearts and pocketbooks.
It's not just Eli Stone you have done this to, but another one of our favorite indulgences, Pushing Dasie's. Yet another hour a week we have given to you and your company and advertisers. We switched to ABC after NBC canceled “West Wing” and “Ed” for the very same reasons.
Mr. Iger, I hope your eyes see this letter, because I am sure my wife and I speak for a lot of our peers when I say, you are loosing us. Maybe not completely right now today, but little by little you are loosing us. As the final few minutes of Eli Stone was on in front of us, we both see why. Even during the show which we cared about so much, a promo for a show called “Dating in the Dark” came on. Followed by another for “Wipe Out” and another for the “Bachelorette” and a rehash of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.”
I am writing to you because sir, frankly not everyone likes reality shows. Where's the magic? What is there to believe? Then it hit us. Those shows to which we invested in had a theme. Something good happens or there is hope in pretty much every show. Two things which anyone can believe. We determined that “good” must not be a rating winner.
Walt Disney also said, “ I would rather entertain and hope that people learned something, than educate people and hope they were entertained. “ How fitting these words help me close this letter. It is our sincere hope that take to heart that there are people out here that have entrusted you with our imaginations. Only recently has ABC seemed to find it acceptable to shatter those by way of a negative figure on a report at the end of a quarter or a show that's predicated on what the stock holders might think or feel.
This is in no way a request to bring any show as Eli and Daisy's back, but rather notice that many of us are choosing not to believe you when you court us to watch a new show on ABC. We can't trust you with our hearts and little free time we choose to spend with television as a medium when you give such little by way of consideration when canceling a show or two or three. Reality shows certainly won't garner our attention as a replacement. If we wanted those, we'd be watching MTV or any number cable networks dedicated to them. Discovery and Scripps networks will now have the majority of our viewer ship and hard drive space from now on.
With utmost respect and humility, I hope you understand our disappointment. It's seems there isn't so much magic in The Magic Kingdom for us at least.
Sincerely,
Jim K
Austin Tx.
By katydidit1269 at 10:39 PM ON 07/12/09
Jim K, thanks for saying exactly how I feel. I cannot believe how upsetting this is to me, to see something so positive leave the airwaves....I too will suspend their channels and products, it is unfair how they do seduce us and then take it away. Thanks for the well written letter and add my name if you like, Kathy D.
By Warrior at 12:31 PM ON 07/14/09
Jim, thanks for taking the time...
I have never in the history of my 47 years made it a point in my life to watch any show on a regular basis... Eli changed that for me... The mix of goodness, hope and faith was remarkable... I will miss Eli, to a point where I aim to return to my 47 year track record of non-addiction to television... I feel like I've been hooked and then thrown to the curb... Truly an empty spot in my stomach... It hurts that goodness, in this case and in so many others, is over... If Eli Stone cannot get traction in this world and be welcomed in to every home, not even enough to stay on the air for those of us who do, the story is so much sadder than just this end...
Donny D.

I have watched Eli Stone from day one and loved it. Just finished watching the final episode on abc.com. It would be great if USA Network would pick it up where it left off. The show definetely gave hope in this world, that there really are good, faith based people. Just like any other good, family oriented show, they get canceled. Now, why do you think this happens????
By katydidit1269 at 12:28 AM ON 07/16/09
Because sex and violence sell more air time. Donny D its been days now and I am still grieving, maybe we should start a campaign to other networks to pick it up. If there is anything this world needs right now is hope, goodness, faith. Am I crazy to feel this sad over a TV show? Sigh.
By EDUNDERMAN at 11:36 PM ON 07/16/09
MY WHOLE FAMILY IS SO UPSET! WE LOVED WATCHING THIS SHOW AS A FAMILY AND WAS THE ONLY SHOW WE ALL SAT DOWN TOGETHER TO WATCHED. THE NETWORK IS CRAZY TO CANCEL IT! WE ARE ALL SICK OF NASTY REALITY T.V. AND STOPPED WATCHING ARE LOCAL CHANELS BECAUSE OF IT. NOW WE FINAL HAD A GOOD CLEAN SHOW TO WATCH AGAIN. MY FRIENDS AND I HAD A FAN CLUB AROUND WORK WITH IT TOO. GO ON A PLAY MORE REALITY CRAP WERE DONE WATCHING IT! BRING OUR SHOW BACK!
By Roxanne at 1:45 AM ON 07/17/09
I was heartbroken when I heard that Eli Stone was canceled. Since the first episode aired it has been one of my favorite shows, and it is the only show that has made me cry on a regular basis. It lifted my spirit like no other show ever has. I am so sad to know that I will never see where this show would have gone had it continued.
I have long held that the Nielson ratings system on which all shows stand or fall is an inaccurate and antiquated way of determining how many viewers a show has. It is ridiculous that a handful of people who cannot possibly accurately represent all of the viewers in the U.S. decide which shows make it and which do not. There has GOT to be a better way.
By katydidit1269 at 2:21 PM ON 07/17/09
You know what guys, I think we are a great bunch!!! We are all sharing the same feelings and its good to know I am not alone in this. I agree with Roxanne as well, I had to buy a box of tissues. Like I said before, the last show had my heart wound and time slowed, and no, I dont abuse any substances, well except maybe Pepsi, LOL. Has anyone heard anything else about someone else picking it up? Jim have you got a reply to your letter? I also believe that all of us have lost someone and we can all relate to Eli. What a great group of writers I tell ya. Lets all keep hoping, the heck with the Nielson Ratings, bring back this decent wholesome show, for families to sit down together is a miracle in itself!

I don't usually submit comments regarding cancelling TV shows but Eli Stone is definitely one program which definitely deserves fighting for. Eli Stone is an excellent, thought-provoking program that is exceptionally entertaining. I am extremely disappointed that you wish to cancel yet another excellent program. Please reconsider this action to cancel Eli Stone and DON'T cancel it!
By roper at 5:38 PM ON 07/18/09
It saddens me that I will no longer be able to look forward to watching Eli Stone. In a time when most TV series are about murder and sex, Eli Stone was like a breath of fresh air. I consider it to be one of the greatest series I have ever had the pleasure to follow.

I thought this was a great show - there was no other show like it. It was entertaining and
the acting was wonderful. When all you see now on TV us reality shows it was nice to watch a show that had no reality just a great story line, great characters and a show that I couldn't wait to see what happened next. I hope that ABC changes their mind or maybe a smart network will see the potential future for this kind of show.
By Spiritbyrd at 9:04 PM ON 08/04/09
I finally watched the taped finale of Eli Stone. Thank you for making it beauiful and meaningful. I will miss this show. It was awesome. It was a mistake taking it off the air.

I loved the Eli Stone series and unfortunately for me, I didn't see the notice of the final 4 episoes airing until it was too late. I have never bought a TV series on DVD but I will buy this one. My kids made jokes of the show until they actually sat and watched it, then they too were hooked. My college son even went online to watch all of the back episodes he liked it so much.
So of course, ABC cancels it. It's amazing how ANY gruesome detective series can last for years but when finally a wholesome show like Eli Stone comes along, it gets canned. Maybe the SciFi channel will pick it up. They have a number of other very good shows with Eureka and Warehouse 13.

I have to admit; I just came across the series when I was searching Netflix but from the very first show this series captured mine and my husband's heart. I am a women of faith and do believe in divinity, it was a wonderful experience to know that there are people trying to show His greatness on TV and have a balance from the crude shows such as South Park and the backstabbing displayed on the majority of reality TV. God Bless all of the cast and writers. I hope and pray you will be given another opportunity to make another difference for people.

We saw all the episodes on TV but also just rented both seasons again from Netflix because they are wonderful. We are very disappointed that the show was cancelled and hope that abc reconsiders and brings it back!

I am so sad to hear that Eli Stone is no more. It saddens me so much that its my first time writing in an attempt to bring Eli back. Every episode has moved me tremendously like no other series and brings meaning to difficult times and good times. I hope that ABC can reconsider and please bring Eli back.

I am so sad and frustrated that Eli Stone has been cancelled. This is the second show that I loved to be cancelled. The characters were and story lines were so creative and captivating. I loved the positive message put out and the struggles each character dealt with. Yes, Eli was the main character but each one had an important part in his/her own right.

I too have been so upset with the cancelation of Eli Stone. It was profound and insightful; at times hilarious! It was great entertainment. Not everything is black and white in this world. How sad that the individuals who make the decisions for these shows have no idea what "regular" America wants. I totally agree with Jim K. above. If I wanted reality shows I would watch MTV. I grew up on Disney & ABC. I believe if Walt Disney could see the choices you and your board make he would very dismayed. I imagine he has "rolled over in his grave" a few times since you took over. At this point, he would be facing down so as not to see the terrible programming you put out and what you've done to Disney in general. Disney used to be about happiness, hopes and dreams. Now, it's just another MTV. Believe me, that is not a compliment. ABC has also gone downhill to an extreme. You are losing us (the audience) slowly, but surely. How sad.

I'm from Kenya which is miles from the US. We love Eli. I wonder what criteria the decision makers use to cancell a good show like this one. They probably need an 'Eli Stone' to show them what a mistake they've made. It's such a pity, very sad and very so not interesting!

I can't beleive how much I still miss Eli Stone!!! It was the only program I looked forward to each week. ABC - what were you thinking when you cancelled Eli Stone? Your new season has nothing with heart, soul, or worth watching. Eli, Eli, Eli! Come back! We need and want you!

I don't understand how ABC can cancel this remarkable show? This is the second show that actually spoke to me that was cancelled (Kevin Hill was the first) This show renewed my faith in people and it saddens me to know that it is off of the air. When I learned of the cancellation, I also wrote ABC a letter explaining my disdain. What has happened to this country if we would rather see "reality tv" than to watch a show that touches our hearts? I tried to convince my friends and collegues to watch the show buth they said that it was "too confusing." I wish that the fans would have fought harder to keep the show. I would also be happy if it went to a cable network. I just purchased season one and two. This show made me cry on more that one occasion ( I hardly ever cry) Eli Stone you will be missed greatly.

I have been waiting for months for the show to come back on! I had no idea that it has been cancelled. I don't get it! When you get really good shows on with a wonderful message you cancel it. Why? Some of us get so sick of the blood and guts and want so uplifting shows to make us feel better and want to be better people because of it. I am very upset that you have chosen to take it off the air. And how do you know how many people are really wathcing it? Nobody has ever contacted me to see what shows I love. Very sorry to lose this fantastic show!
