Transformers 2 kills in its opening five days with $200M

\<i\>Transformers 2\<\/i\> kills in its opening five days with $200M

There's apparently no stopping those giant freaking robots: Michael Bay's much-hyped sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen raked in an estimated $200 million in ticket sales domestically in just five days, the Associated Press reported.

That includes $112 million domestically in the sequel's first weekend and $201.2 million since opening Wednesday. For its first five days, that puts the Transformers sequel second only to last summer's The Dark Knight, with $203.8 million.

This was the biggest opening weekend of the year, surpassing the $85.1 million debut of X-Men Origins: Wolverine in early May.

The sequel began with $60.6 million in its opening day Wednesday.

This will drop off big time by next week. In the long run, I don't expect this movie to surpass Star Trek as the most successful movie of the year—at least, I hope it doesn't. It certainly doesn't deserve to. The first one was much more coherent and a better film overall. Michael Bay got way too carried away with this one. It's all explosions and almost no plot.

By mizinthrop at 2:13 PM ON 06/28/09

Hey I hate to tell ya antodav that as of 06/28/09 the movie UP is now the #1 movie this year and don't forget there's a holiday weekend comming up Transformers will still show strong numbers and will probably become the #1 movie of the year by next Sunday.

By Justo at 2:18 PM ON 06/28/09

I like this movie alot. As a stand alone feature it's not very strong, but taken as a direct continuation of the first it's pretty damn fun.

By MetalPause at 3:18 PM ON 06/28/09

This was the most disappointing movie, in recent memory, that I have seen.

It had some really great potential to incorporate elements of Spider-Man 2 into it - with Sam trying to figure out his role with the Autobots (vs PP turning his back on Spidey).

It also could have included the racism elements of the X-Men movies in general, with the Autobots seeking asylum while trying to protect us. This movie was a major, major letdown.

By Mad Vulcan at 3:47 PM ON 06/28/09

Why would it be said movies like Up or Transformers surpass Star Trek? I see no reason for them to, especially because of weak plots they provide.

By E at 4:39 PM ON 06/28/09

MetalPause -- The way I understand it (and I haven't seen the flick yet), there was PLENTY of racism in the movie!!

By fernando poo at 5:01 PM ON 06/28/09

A horrible, horrible movie. Offensive on many levels. It is racist, sexist, and boring. So terribly boring. But worst of all, it assumes the audience is profoundly stupid. It's a movie written for 10 year old boys with a world view where all women are objects, violence has no consequence, actual geography is an inconvenient detail, constant shouting is the way adults talk and non whites are illiterate, buck-toothed comedy relief. It says a lot that this might become the biggest movie of the summer. Don't waste your money unless you enjoy being patronized.

By impakt at 5:18 PM ON 06/28/09

Unfortunatly... as long as there are people who will pay to go see it so they can trash it on the internet, they will continue to make more movies like that... because i studio does not care if a movie is good.. they care how much it makes.
And Michael Bay.. a racist? No way.. I've seen Bad Boys and Bad Boys 2... and every other movie he did that come to think of it, usually only had 1 person of color in it.

By keth at 5:35 PM ON 06/28/09

Complaints of racism, patronization and whatnot are completely meaningless. Such comments either end up being unheard and pointless or end up actually contributing to the success of the movie.

By cylon_conspiracy at 5:54 PM ON 06/28/09

"Unfortunatly... as long as there are people who will pay to go see it so they can trash it on the internet, they will continue to make more movies like that."

Exactly. I have no idea what the people who went to this film were expecting. It is everything you would think it would be, dumb, loud, hectic, and TONS of fun.

I was not going to see this movie but I read how upset people were getting and I couldn't help myself, I had to see what everyone was freaking out over. I don't like it when someone tells me I shouldn't see a movie or that I should boycott a film. Just makes me want to see it more. And no, it was not racist. This PC crap has run its course. Time to react like normal people again.

By archer75 at 6:30 PM ON 06/28/09

After reading all the negative reviews I went in to the movie today not expecting much. I can generally shut off my brain and just enjoy these types of movies for what they are but I found myself enjoying this movie even more than the first. Neither has a great plot but it was fun. Oh I could pick it apart but i'm not going to do that. And it did have many references from the cartoon series and it mostly on these elements that the critics really bashed the movie. Clearly they never watched the cartoons. All in all it was a good flick.
I enjoyed star trek as well but the plot was HORRIBLE. I had a harder time getting past that with star trek. Less so with transformers.

By Syberowlf at 7:01 PM ON 06/28/09

I am not sure what people were expecting going into this movie, but it was exactly what I thought it was going to be. Hot Megan Fox, giant robots fighting, mindless plot and low brow humor. It will easily surpass Star Trek, which was just ok..barely and Up. While there will be a big drop off by next weekend, that will be expected with this huge of an opening.

By Justo at 7:06 PM ON 06/28/09

The claims of racism are among the most idiotic things I've ever heard.

You're missing the key element here: RACE!
They're robots, not even colored like that of a race (bright red and green) and there are nothing said or noted in the movie that would indicate they are suppose to represent a race.

Now here's where the kicker comes in, YOU'RE the racist for making that claim! YOU'RE the one that's assuming a particular race is the only race that could be represented by their behavior. As opposed to being an individual with certain characteristics non-dependent of race. You should be ashamed of yourself.

By ZombieSniper at 7:19 PM ON 06/28/09

As for the first comment, Up was surpassed Star Trek as the top movie of the summer by about 5 million and Star Trek has been out 3 weeks longer. Star Trek will end up being the 4th or 5th highest grossing movie of the summer which is good because I thought it was pretty lame and extremely over-rated. As for the negative reviews, I believe it was exactly what it claimed it was going to be. The trailers showed Megan Fox in cut off shorts showing her ass on a motorcycle, giant robots fighting, people yelling and huge explosions. Are people really that surprised that is what they got in the movie...All this reminds me of Watchmen where parents were taking there kids to an R-rated movie (sex, nudity and violence) and were shocked that's what was in the movie...

By Baylovesmoney at 7:25 PM ON 06/28/09

cylon_conspiracy,

"I have no idea what the people who went to this film were expecting. It is everything you would think it would be, dumb, loud, hectic, and TONS of fun."

Seriously.

Michael Bay smiles in his sleep while he dreams of people like you.

By loved transfomers at 7:39 PM ON 06/28/09

You are absolutely right Justo! I thought those two robots we're super funny. Their jive talk was hilarious. I mean they were probably supposed to be "black" characters seeing as the were going on about "busting caps" and such but I guess they could have been any race really. What would've been great was if their radiators had been big gold chains. And the fact that they couldn't read? That was really funny. I laughed for a while at that one. I don't understand why everybody says it's racist.

By Milady Dragon at 9:31 PM ON 06/28/09

I saw Transformers 2 today and thought it was great! It really said some things about friendships and the lengths we'll go to, to help people (and robots) that we care about. Absolutely loved it and will see it again.

Oh, and before I get vilified for being some sort of juvenile fanboy who wouldn't know a good movie if it bit them....I am a 44 year old woman with a college education. I went by myself, and there were other single women in the audience as well. And the general consensus as people were leaving was that they thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

By Taiso at 9:39 PM ON 06/28/09

If humanity had a reset button, I'd be pressing it right now.

By scoob958 at 9:46 PM ON 06/28/09

I thought it was horrible, it had similar plot holes to Star Trek now that I look back. No surprise there as they were both written by the same douches. I did like Star Trek though. I'm thinking the difference in directors made a big deal. This thing all they cared about was the effects which I will admit were really good but the rest was just window dressing and didn't really matter for what they were trying to do. Too many scenes of the autobots just seeming to dissapear to add dramatic affect for the humans, like when Sam and Mikayla were running 2 miles in the desert dodging Decepticons and BumbleBee who was originally with them was nowhere to be found. He could have picked them up and taken them there instantly. He wasn't fighting or anything, he just wasn't anywhere until Sam was about to die then he shows up saves Sam and then dissapears again. Jetfire did the same dissapearing act too for a while. You couldn't really tell one Decepticon from another and they never even told you who most of them were or how many there were anyway. Plus would someone explain to me how John Turturro could stand on the side of a pyramid that blocks are plummeting down from and not get hit?

By hulk-lite at 9:50 PM ON 06/28/09

Milady Dragon is "44 year old woman with a college education" that wouldn't know a good movie if it bit her.

By Blind Man at 11:45 PM ON 06/28/09

hulk-lite obviously is a douche bag.

By jose at 1:01 AM ON 06/29/09

Can anyone explain to me how the heck they got to the boneyard behind the Smithsonian Damn some times for the sake of movie making you can take some liberties but c'mon be freaking believeable

By IsoTek at 1:31 AM ON 06/29/09

@Jose....As a native Washingtonian I and my spose were laughing to ourselves over that. The Hanger actually reminded us of the Garber Facility where exhibits are stored, but that is out in Suitland Maryland and for those that didn't know, there are no deserts in Maryland. They sort of crossed up the Arizona Boneyard and the Garber Facility all in one. Other than that, the only problem I really had with the movie was the incessant sex jokes.

By Duder at 1:51 AM ON 06/29/09

Machael Bay is awful as was this movie. Its a shame that we keep getting this kind of garbage. Oh well, the average movie watcher is a moron, just look at the quality of TV.

By Pat at 2:29 AM ON 06/29/09

It hurts that movies this bad still make so much money. It gives the big studios justification to make more of the this crap. It's a sad sad state of affairs.

By Gman at 3:32 AM ON 06/29/09

Hmm, God forbid that at a time when you can turn on the tv and see nothing but depressing news that filmakers keep making films that allow us to escape for 2 1/2 hours. I for one think that well made, well acted movies are an art form that should never be lost, but every now and then it doesn't hurt to lose yourself into fantasy.

As for those 2 annoying robots, they reminded me more of the wannabe Eminems that you see everywhere.

By Milady Dragon at 8:05 AM ON 06/29/09

@hulk-lite - Glad to know I was correct about the people posting here. My expectations were lowered just for you, dear. I certainly hope that some day you develop some taste that doesn't just involve the sensory organs of your tongue.

Have a nice day, sweetie.

By BrianaMJ at 8:13 AM ON 06/29/09

After all of the reviews, I went into the movie with lowered expectations, and I was STILL disappointed. While the action sequences were great, the jokes, both bot and human alike, were over the top and fell flatter than pancakes. I spent too much of the movie shaking my head sadly. My husband, who never walks out of movies, almost walked out an hour and a half in. Frankly, it was a waste of our $5 movie tickets, and I'm not sure it'd be worth even dollar theater ticket prices. I'm expecting this movie to drop a lot next weekend due to word of mouth.

By trauma21 at 11:05 AM ON 06/29/09

Hey BrianaMJ what movie theater do you go to where the tickets ares till 5 dollars? People, you do realize that there are no such things as Transformers! some of you guys expect to see oscar winning performance for a summer blockbuster! (Thank You Heath) Summer movie are the high point of the film industry to make money so the plots are watered down and the CGI is turned up to the max. It seems like some of you guys expected the Great Gatsby with cars, leave your brain at home and watch robots destroy each other. Also at first I did think the two robots were racist right up until I waked out of the theater and saw two white kids talking exactly like them with there shorts sagging and whereing a baseball cap sideway.

By rodee at 11:27 AM ON 06/29/09

I listened to the critics, and found they got it wrong in my opinion. I found the movie very enjoyable, and I hope it continues to be a success. I didn't find it racist at all, in fact the autobots had the funniest lines to me.

By caboose at 3:13 PM ON 06/29/09

see the thing is about this movie plot doesnt really have a role, as long as its pure action which it was, with a dash of comedy which it had its a good movie its def not the worse movie of the year. as a long time fan of transformers i loved it. the storyline dealing with the Fallen directly and the Primes could be cleared up alittle bit but hopefully they will do that with the third which i hear might have Unicron in it. also the whole racist thing is crap, the transformers learn our language by using the internet and most likely there is "gansta" talk online in which they used, by saying they are racist then your saying the internet is racist lol

By unbelievable at 4:50 PM ON 06/29/09

Clearly, people will enjoy anything. I'm amazed at how many posts here defend this movie. It's garbage. Pure garbage. Some have pointed out the racism as the big negative thing. Perhaps. But racism or no racism, there is no hiding the flaws of this movie. It's a boring mess. Explosions! (yawn) Bad dialogue! ( yawn again ) Inept comedy (more yawns).

Some of you have said "it's a summer movie? what did you expect?" I expect to be entertained. I know what summer movies are about. They satisfy a craving for escapism. Like fast food, it's not good for you but it hits the spot when you're in the mood. No one expects Transformers to be "art". But Michael Bay has dropped a big turd in this summertime burger. And no amount of leaniency for summer time can save this disaster. In fact summer, fall, winter, spring you name it, this is a complete waste of anybody's time. And for those of you who have liked it, enjoy your mouthful of crap.

By DoubleD74 at 5:04 PM ON 06/29/09

As a DIE HARD Trekker, I must say that Transformers kicked Star Treks butt. I am confused by all your "being offended" posts. You do realize this is make believe right? I agree with Justo's post if that is what you see then you are the one with a racial problem. I also agree with GMan's post that this was a great get away from all the real crap of the everyday.
This movie is fun and entertaining. New favorite movie. It will over take all the others by next weekend and will be the highest all year.

For all of you saying that this is horrible, look at the numbers 200 Million in 5 days. You are in the minority. Sometimes a movie is a movie. Get over it.
As Ironhide says you "Decepticon punk"

By RTKGuy at 5:48 PM ON 06/29/09

What is wrong with this site? Can't get it to post my longer comments. Guess I better cut to the chase:

Some of you need to read a book more often than once a decade. It might save your brains from mediocrity.

By areyouserious at 6:05 PM ON 06/29/09

DoubleD74:

"For all of you saying that this is horrible, look at the numbers 200 Million in 5 days. You are in the minority"

The real minority are the mouth breathers who don't want their money back.

By tacosgt at 8:45 PM ON 06/29/09

This movie was awesome. Quit whining about all the racism and sexism. For gods sake it is people like you who got Obama elected. I am tired of hearing about how everyone is so opressed or offended. It is a movie, It was funny, and I love explosions. So quit your bitchin and enojoy it for what it is mindless entertainment.

By RTKGuy at 10:06 PM ON 06/29/09

Tacosgt:

And it's idiots like you who keep getting movies like Transformers 2 made.

By soltaylor at 10:18 PM ON 06/29/09

PEOPLE GET REAL IT'S JUST A MOVIE. Has anyone recently looked at the original series. If you did you would see that there were all kinds of problems with it. Personally me and my son saw a movie that was just what I expected and it was GREAT FUN.

It was much better than the first though not perfect.

By cylon_conspiracy at 11:01 PM ON 06/29/09

If you people SAW this movie, and hated it... I can only feel pity for you for not knowing what types of movie you are paying to go see. Now I can understand a casual moviegoer just seeing the "big movie" this weekend not liking it.... but people who POST on a SCIENCE FICTION website, being shocked at how 'bad' it was, just blows me away. Everyone knew what they were in for. A visceral, long, convoluted, and yes FUN movie.

To the guy who said Micahel Bay has dreams about "people like me", get a life and stop living vicariously through your hatred of successful entertainers. Seriously.

And I want to make a comment about "art". There probably is a difference between 'filmmaking" and "blockbuster summer movie making". But that doesn't mean it's any less of a creative vision that took time and dedication to put up on the screen.

Visually, this was one of the BEST sci-fi movies in a long time. You have to give yourself permission to just enjoy the eye candy. Relax, watch the robot movie, then to make up for it, go rent a movie that has serious themes, drama, and most likely a depressing ending, to make up for your lost sense of self.

By iagree at 6:48 AM ON 06/30/09

You are so right cylon_conspiracy!

Everybody gets on their high horse when commenting on blockbuster movies. They act like they're too good for them. I for one love big dumb movies. Transformers was way more fun than movies like Dark Knight or Iron Man that tried to be "smart". Give me Ben Stiller being slapped by a monkey any day!

Don't they know that movies are supposed to be fun? TV has the same problem too. Battlestar Galactica was so boring and depressing and so was Sarah Connor Chronicles. All this stuff parades as quality but it's just hot air. And yet they canceled Knight Rider. Go figure.

By cylon_conspircay at 9:59 PM ON 06/30/09

Anyone who doesn't take themselves seriously should be able to enjoy a movie like TDK, Iron Man, or BSG in the proper context.

Again, that's if you don't take yourself too seriously. May be hard for some folks, because after all space ship and robot movies are a HUGE FREAKING deal and extremely important.

And in any case, this movie was genuinely funny, in a South Park/Pineapple Express type of way. To me at least.

Sad how limited some of your people's tastes are. And sad that you would pay good money to see something like Transformers and not know what you are in for.

Enjoy your self-righteousness, you zany sci-fi elitists you.

By cylon_conspiracy at 10:03 PM ON 06/30/09

And I just want to warn the folks who paid money to see Transformers and were shocked at what they saw, to STAY AWAY from that GI Joe movie. I can guarantee you Transformers is and will be better than GI JOE. And the only reason I know this is I can get the general feel for a film, before I see it.

Call it a gift.

By kryche at 8:57 PM ON 07/03/09

I'd just like to know where it's written that big summer blockbusters have to automatically = crap.

Some people are saying you knew what to expect when you go in, it's a summer blockbuster not the next oscar contender... yada yada yada...Whats wrong with striving for a little more than mediocrity in summer blockbusters? Why not demand at least some semblance of quality from it? As long as the weak minded tasteless masses eat up dreck like this, Hollywood will be more than happy to supply them with it.

Summertime is the worst time of year for Hollywood movies, and Michael bay gave us the perfect example why.

By whotheheckcares at 10:14 AM ON 07/09/09

Seriously people. Its a friggin' movie. See it, don't see it, its up to you. Movies are ultimately made to entertain an audience in hopes to avoid real life for about 2 hours (or in this movie's case 2.5 hours). Some movies attempt to be works of art; while some simply are to entertain. If you don't like hot chicks, explosions, huge robots, and stupid humor than why the heck did you see this movie in the first place? This is a M.Bay film, not a Scorsese. Keep things in perspective people. If all you want to do is be recognized as a critic, I feel sorry for you. This is a forum people happen to pass by, rarely intend to go to. Seriously, for those people who have seen the movie "Idicracy", this country is really heading to the plot of that movie!
