Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has already grossed more than $55 million, the best domestic box office opening day ever for a Wednesday release, topping the previous record holder, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which grossed $44.2 million in its first day, Variety reported.
Transformers 2, which is playing in more than 4,200 theaters in the U.S., has a strong shot at eclipsing the $152.4 million earned by Spider-Man 2 in its first five days. That film opened on the same Wednesday in 2004. Estimates have the film grossing $150 million to $170 million domestically over its five-day debut.
The opening-day haul in the U.S. included $16 million in midnight runs, the best run ever for a film released on a Wednesday. It's also the third-best of all time after The Dark Knight ($18.5 million) and Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith ($16.9 million).

...and they will make their way to the bank, laughing at all their critics!
When's volume III coming? LOL
By cifaretto at 11:13 AM ON 06/25/09
so...it wasn't so bad after all.
maybe the so called critics and all the other hollywood idiots will understand that it's movies like this that make millions and not snoozefest like benjamin button or aniston movies.
By mykl at 11:15 AM ON 06/25/09
@ tati: I agree with you and the worse part is as much as it sucked all that money will just encourage Bay and his rapers of my childhood to continue to fill the next one with the crap that they put in this one (i.e. Mudflap, Skid, no plot, way too much comedy with jokes that sucked and most of all action scenes you cannot even tell which robot is which half the time).
By Prime1985 at 11:16 AM ON 06/25/09
I don't think they really care about critics otherwise they would have made a good movie. What happened here is simply this: who's more foolish the fool or those who put out $8 bucks or so (depeneding on where you live of course) to watch garbage.
By DaCaPn0045 at 11:34 AM ON 06/25/09
They do listen to the critics. That's why Shia and group was running around for like an hour. People complained about not enough humans doing anything in the first one. Now you have a two and a half hour movie called..... Sam and Makayla: A Quest of Love.
By Berlin at 12:34 PM ON 06/25/09
DaCaPn0045 you've got it backwards. Everyone complained about too many humans having too much screen time in the first movie. And the second has the same problem(s).

Making this much money on Wednsday says absolutely nothing about the quality of the film. It just means people don't read reviews. All those people on Wednsday could have walked out of the theater complaining about how shitty it was. Let's see how it does in the 2nd week
By Trick at 1:11 PM ON 06/25/09
Did this movie open last week in Europe? Are they including those box office numbers? The article does not say.
By Shen at 1:31 PM ON 06/25/09
The movie was awesome, glad its doing well and looking forward to seeing a 3rd one.

What we have here is a movie about giant robots beating the Hell out of each other and the humans who happen to be caught in the middle. I don't care who the filmmaker is, it's impossible for this kind of movie to be done in a way that it'll be taken seriously. People need to learn to just sit down, shut up, and enjoy the ride, or don't. It's a free country. We're all allowed to like or hate whichever movies we want. If there are some people who like movies that people hate and are willing to pay to see it and drive up the box office of said hated film to record breaking levels, then everyone else needs to learn how to deal with it.
I haven't actually seen this movie yet, but I can already tell you with absolute certainty that it's not going to be the worst movie of the summer. G.I. Joe is going to have that honor.

Saw the movie, not worth the $8.50, so if you are going to see it, don't pay full price. Just like the first one, the action is too fast, almost blurry. But the thing that really got me, was the lack of attention to detail. In one scene, we see the carrier CVN-74 (USS Stennis) and you see it get hit, then in a flash scene, it is suddenly CVN-72 (USS Lincoln), then showing the ship sinking it is suddenly again CVN-74..but it doesnt end there, in the final 20 minutes, the CVN-74 is now again in pristine condition and helping battle the Decepticons. Mr. Bay, pay attention to the small things!!!!

You are certainly free to express yourselves, but I wonder why it matters so deeply with some of you? You criticize who the director is, the storyline, how much screentime Shia L. has?
C'mon, really? What it boils down to is whether the film was entertaining.
I would say yes. By the millions of dollars that was spent to view it on a wednesday.
And if you're wondering, Yes I did see it. I caught a matinee for 6 bucks and it was worth it. I grew up watching the cartoons and Bay has respect for the franchise. He kept in themes from the shows and managed to throw in a couple of surprises. I felt satisfied with the movie knowing that it wouldn't win an academy award and nor have Meryl Streep in it.
To Frosty5280: The Ship that was sunk was the CVN-71 (U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt).....It was mentioned in the movie and I remeber distinctly because I served on that ship in '89.
1's and 4's can look alike
The Stennis and the Lincoln were used as recconaisance and launch bases in the fight with the decepticons in Egypt......Go watch it again, or wait for the DVD.

@granddiggy
the first day doesn't mean it wa entertraining. It just means that there are a lot of people that don't care about reviews and like the first one enough to be excited for the second one.
Week two is what will determine how entertaining it is. After word of mouth and people going to see it a second and third time, because it was so good. But I doubt there'll be much of that.
And to SYFY. I'm assuming since the name is changing, you're gonna bring us a fresh look to the website. I hope this includes fixing this frakin captcha crap. Why the hell do we need to input a code, to post a comment?
By Underdog007 at 9:18 PM ON 06/25/09
I thought the movie was awesome regardless of how much money it makes or not. Optimus Prime fighting like Jackie Chan was just pure cool. It's easily worth the $9 I had to pay. There's a lot more worthless things in life you can blow your money on.

The next Transformers movie is said to be coming out in 2012. Mainly because Michael Bay wants to take some time off, because if Transformers 3 were to come out in 2011, production would have to start in September
By solidgun at 1:12 AM ON 06/26/09
This movie was awesome. Have already seen it twice and will most likely see it a couple more times. I like movies that I can sit down, not have to think about what's going on and just be entertained for a couple of hours - and this movie did it.
By peterepublic at 12:31 PM ON 06/26/09
@granddiggy Fellow Plankowner? Agreed...it should be about whether or not it is entertaining....served aboard TR from 85-89....irregardless of whether or not TR was the ship portrayed in the film, will still wear my plankowner cap to the movie :)

um they actually raked in 60.6 mill on wed not $55 million, oh well transformers 3 yyeeeeeeehhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!
By Vracer111 at 5:24 AM ON 06/28/09
Frosty5280 and granddiggy: The Carrier which was sunk (Roosevelt) showed 3 numbers through the whole sequence - #72 overhead before being impacted, #71 after being hit and while sinking, and #74 on the very last shot while dissapearing into the depths. The Carrier at the end (Stennis) showed 2 difference numbers- #71 on the very first shot and #74 for every other shot. Those were the only obvious things I saw (which I confirmed the second time watching.)
By rmhuggs at 1:52 PM ON 06/28/09
Excellent movie!! Fast paced, entertaining and exactly what I paid my money for. Some of the detractors were right, (the twins were idiotic, and some of the fights scenes made it hard to distinguish some transformers from one another) but what movie is perfect. I certainly haven't seen a perfect movie in a long time. None of that detracted from the movie that I saw. I really don't know how some movie critics are able to keep their jobs, (Roger Moore, I'm talking about you) they don't seem to be able to grasp oscar contender from 2 hours of fun.
By NJKiko at 2:00 PM ON 06/29/09
Frosty5280 and Vracer111...another thing was Agent Simmons radio'd to an aircraft carrier and the Captain identified himself as the CO of the USS Stennis. How is he sitting in PriFly on the carrier's island if that ship went down?
