UPDATED: Up comes in second at weekend box office

UPDATED: \<i\>Up\<\/i\> comes in second at weekend box office

Final box-office figures for the June 5 weekend show that Disney/Pixar's 3-D animated Up came in second place, with $44.3 million, behind The Hangover, which drew bigger audiences than previously projected, the Associated Press reported.

Sunday studio estimates had Up edging The Hangover by about $1 million, which would have made it the first film of the year to place first two weekends in a row. That turned out not to be so.

It's rare that the first- and second-place movies on Sunday flip-flop when final numbers come out Monday. But strong attendance Sunday allowed The Hangover to pull ahead, the AP reported.

Land of the Lost opened in third place, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Up dropped just 35 percent for the June 5 weekend, raising its 10-day domestic box office to an estimated $137.3 million.

Land of the Lost opened with a disappointing $19.5 million.

Drag Me to Hell, meanwhile, saw its box office fall 53 percent in its second weekend of release, to about $7.3 million, to take seventh place, with a total so far of $28.5 million.

Angels & Demons added $6.5 million in its fourth weekend, for a total of about $116.1 million domestically and $409 million globally, the year's best.

Star Trek remained strong in fifth place, with about $8.4 million for the weekend, raising its domestic total to $222.8 million, the best domestic take of the year so far.

Terminator Salvation, meanwhile, dropped to sixth place from third, with about $8.18 million for the weekend and a total of $105.5 million domestically so far.

That's amazing. This year's summer movies have LEGS. It's going to take forever to kick them off the box office Top 10.

I took the lady-babies (my daughters) to see UP. Let me tell everyone this movie full on rocks!

It does a masterful job with the story line. Carl, voiced by Ed Asner, met the love of his life as a child. The movie goes on to show you their life, and their love, together. It leaves little out. The viewer feels Carl's pain, and his joys. One of my favorite aspects of the film is you do not hear Carl's voice for the first 15 minutes of the film. Yet, he is the main character. Hence, once you hear it you feel a connection to him.

Once the story line is established UP goes on to create empathy with the viewer for Carl. As often happens, life is taking things away from Carl that he loves. He, deeply in love with his wife even after her passing, does what he feels best to honor her memory. It is at this point that the film becomes a thing of beauty.

Carl, a retired balloon salesmen, straps his left over inventory to his house in search of adventure. The same adventure he promised his wife they would undertake. Carl's search for fulfillment is endearing, and pointiant. It creates a feeling of love lost, and yet strangely fulfilled.

Of course, along the way, Carl meets up with a cast of characters that are believable and charming. My personal favorite is Dug, then again I'm a dog person. There are a couple of running gags that will keep you chuckling throughout the film. Not to mention give you cause to cheer.

UP is a great film, and not just for the family. In this humble corespondents opinion the best film since The Dark Night. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up from me. I'll see you at the movies. Until next time the balcony is closed.

I took my wife to see UP in 3D and it blew our minds!! Shes really not into animated movies so I crossed my fingers hoping she would like it. After the movie was over she asked when the next 3D movie will be out. But by itself, UP was a good movie.

TearEmUp said it all, this movie was just plain wonderful. I almost never get emotional when watching movies, but I'm not at all ashamed to admit that I was misty-eyed at the passing of Carl's wife and this was animation for goodness' sake! Pixar always makes the story the primary driving force behind their movies and it always shows.
