Watch an extended preview of The CW's new Vampire Diaries series
The CW has posted an extended preview of its upcoming The Vampire Diaries series, which you can view after the jump.
The Vampire Diaries, from Dawson's Creek creator Kevin Williamson, is based on books by L.J. Smith originally published in 1993—well before Stephenie Meyer's Twilight—and revolves around a young woman, Elena Gilbert, who's torn between two vampire brothers. The brothers--one good, one evil--are battling for her soul and the souls of her pals, her family and the small town where they live.
The series stars Nina Dobrev as Elena, Paul Wesley as Stefan and Ian Somerhalder as Damon. In addition to Williamson, Julie Plec (Kyle XY) is also on board to write and executive-produce. It debuts in the fall and will air on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

Meh... Who cares? More crap of the same ilk as Twilight... I have a HUGE problem with vamps walking around in the daylight... Plus, I can't stand the 90210/Dawson's Creek with the undead theme. Lame, lame, LAME!!!

OH MY GOSH!!! These books were KILLER when i was in high school.. no rip off twighlight- quite the opposite... the Vampire Diaries were dark and intriguing well before twighlight was even an idea in the authors mind...
L.J Smith also wrote another AMAZING series called the Secret Circle that was about a witches coven... very neat story as well...
But the Vampire Diaries were wonderful books- I don't know if the show will be able to do them justice... Maybe they will.. I haven't watched the preview yet even! I am just excited that my favorite books from 90's highschool homeroom are being turned into a series:) *yay*

It's too bad Twilight had to come out first and ruin this, which is based on the much earlier written and much much better books by L.J. Smith. Now this will always be seen as the "ripoff".

More people crying about something being a rip-off of "Twilight" you are so stupid to even for a moment think "Twilight" is soooo original. the Vampire/Human love story has been around for years even before Buffy , even before Dark Shadows. These books were published in 1993 long nefore "Twilight" that's baisicly like saying Bewitched ripped off Charmed*****Get over it! If you don't want to see it don't watch it , but don't slander what you haven't seen

Actually, it's not ripping off Twilight, these books were written in the mid 90's.
The books were fantastic, but they've been around a lot longer than the majority of this new trend of vampire stories :)

Yeah I was excited when I heard they were going to bring the Sword of Truth series to TV but they steamrolled over the original material and it's.... it's crap. You can always tell that's going to happen when the producers say "Oh it's true to the spirit of the orginial text." That's just crap. Anyways my point is not to expect a great show especially if it's on the CW unless it's the show SuperNatural.

I loved the Secret Circle books when I was in high school. Hopefully they make a series of those next. I remember when I first started reading Twilight I thought it reminded me of Vampire Diaries.

why is everyone hating on twilight, god you guys have no lifes just say bad things about anything popular. Have you read the books? if alot of people like them then that means something. Dont judge it on the movies. and hello 11 year old girl who "read 20 books" get al life. Dont just relate vampire books to each other Its more than that dur.

just because its plot is the same. and twilight wouldnt ruin this series. Anyone with a brain will realize that the vampire diaries came out first. its just when twilight got popular the "vampire" books suddenly got popular and this would be the best time to produce the series.

To OMGSTFU-Vampire novels have always been popular, way before Stephenie Meyer ever had her dream. Ever heard of Bram Stoker? Anne Rice? Charlaine Harris? Vampires have always been popular, not just because of some failed attempt at literature.
