What Cloverfield director Matt Reeves plans for his remake of the vampire indie Let the Right One In

What \<i\>Cloverfield\<\/i\> director Matt Reeves plans for his remake of the vampire indie \<i\>Let the Right One In\<\/i\>

Cloverfield director Matt Reeves takes on the proposed English-language version of the critically acclaimed Swedish vampire movie Let the Right One In as his next project, and he spoke with the Los Angeles Times about it.

The original tells the story of a lonely 12-year-old boy who realizes the kind girl who moved in next door is a vampire.

Here's what the Times reported:

"I was just hooked," Reeves recalled recently. "I was so taken with the story, and I had a very personal reaction. It reminded me a lot of my childhood, with the metaphor that the hard times of your pre-adolescent, early adolescent moment, that painful experience is a horror."

Reeves signed on to adapt and direct an American remake of the cult hit, now called Let Me In, the English translation of John Ajvide Lindqvist's original novel. He recently finished a second draft of the script, currently set in Reagan-era Colorado, and is scouting locations, looking to maintain the original story's chilly, snow-swept environs. The film is scheduled for a fall 2010 theatrical release.

I hope he doesn't try and copy the Swedish movie. Many fans of genre movies have already seen it. Reeves need to question what the audience of the movie will be and what story he wants to tell. New angles on the story and even a new ending could work.

Also, "Let the right one in" never tried hard to be a crowd pleaser. I think that may also be true for Reeves remake if he wants to make something that could standout from other stuff people tend to compare in the broad genre movie spectrum.

It would be interesting if he reinstated some of what was cut from the book in the first screen adaptation - having read the book prior to seeing the film, I was very disappointed, as several plot threads vanished completely.

WTH????? Is it becomming that apparent that all originality has left hollywood?? They have to go about remaking good independent films?? Just give it a break and go back and think a bit and come out with a good idea!

Hoy Bishop! This just in Hollywood is completely Bankrupt on originality! LOL

Interesting how the ego-centric Abrams took all the credit for Cloverfield such that no one would recognize the film's director or its writer. You know? The guys who actually did the main work! I haven't seen this and have no desire to, but I'm just sayin'....

My gods!!...Leave it be!, it´s still brand new, there´s no need for a remake, Reeves should be busy making Cloverfield 2 instead of this unnecessary remake, the original sweedish film is flawless!

'Let the Right One In' really doesn't need to be remade.
It's brand new, and everyone interested in the story and the themes would be willing to see it in Swedish with subtitles.
I really doubt the remake will gain a larger audience than the Swedish version because its such a huge success already, a great film made from a great book.

Wrong. It has nothing to do with JJ claiming credit. It's the studio selling the film. The studio can not sell a Matt Reeves film or a Drew Goddard film. They can sell a JJ Abrams film because it's a name people know.

When Cloverfield was released I recognized Goddard's name from his awesome work on Buffy, Angel, Alias, and Lost but most people would not.

What you neglect to mention is that the "ego-centric" (yeah right) Abrams is the kind of guy who hires his friends, keeps them working and helps get their projects produced.

kitofnine: I couldn't agree more.

And, If Mr Reeves found himself 'hooked' on the original, isn't it rather patronising of him to think that the rest of us can't manage without him spoon-feeding us an English language version?

By Paulthing at 7:31 PM ON 06/30/09

Keep Lina Leandersson she was great ;)

By xdeathknightx at 8:18 PM ON 07/01/09

Why? Just why? The original is just great, I really loved it so why do we need a remake?
And you just know they are going to leave stuff out and get some talentless or not creepy at all girl to play the vampire. And of course just about everything has to be done in broad daylight, even if it concerns vampires...
If you love the movie get on a pr-mission to have people see the movie. I have noticed that now that Twilight has died down a lot more people are watching this, while they ignored me when Twilight was out.
We don't need an English version, especially if he dumbs it down.

Well count my vote as one who will absolutely NOT be seeing this. Enough is enough. It was kind of kitsch years ago to see a movie remade, but in the past 10 years Hollywood has just completely given up all together any creativity. To call these people "artists" is an insult to artists. This factory of films that are remakes, reimages, redos, etc.., not too mention the fact they seem to be only interested in doing every lame comic book hero to death. Some of my favorite films over the years from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, Dirty Dozen, Blade Runner, etc.. simply would never be made today, as they are TOO original. Pathetic. Please, everyone BOYCOTT this crap. Especially that insult to us fans with the remake of The Thing by no-talent RDM. That will bomb I assure you.

By Kenny at 5:24 AM ON 10/19/09

Who cares if he remakes it. Its not like you have to watch the film? I am actually excited to see if he can actually make a good adaptation without butchering it? After all he is doing a new adaptation of the novel, not a remake of the film.
