When Disney announced it was full steam ahead on a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, the biggest asset was Johnny Depp, returning as Captain Jack Sparrow. Director Gore Verbinski has said he would pass on the fourth film, and the screenplay and its writers are still up in the air. But that apparently doesn't matter, though, because all fans want is more Jack.
Depp—speaking in a press conference in Beverly Hills, Calif., where he was promoting Public Enemies—acknowledged that the previous sequels may have gone overboard with overly complicated stories and plots. "Not that I've seen the movies, but I hear tell," Depp said.
In response to that, Depp says there's no such thing as perfect cinema, but he considers another sequel just another chance at bat. "Call me a glutton," he joked. While he'd like the screenplay to be right, he feels Pirates 4 could be just about anything at this point.
"I'm trying to turn it into a Beckett play," Depp said, adding that perhaps Captain Jack could show up in a geisha costume. He's joking. We think.
The first movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, was based on the classic Disneyland theme park attraction. It introduced the character of Sparrow, a bumbling pirate whom Depp based in part on rocker Keith Richards. The massive success of the film led to back-to-back sequels, Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. The chance to see more Jack brought in the audience, despite complaints about the overly complicated storylines.
Now Depp says filmmakers are free to explore a lot of possible storylines, unhindered by the pesky need to tie up plot points. Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is in development with Jerry Bruckheimer films, aiming for a 2012 release.

The complex the plot, the more motivated the characters, the more times I went and saw it in the theatre. I think I saw Pirates 3 twice in the theatre, then rented it, and probably watched it on cable too. Somehow it didn't wreck the movie and added to the chaos and humor.
You can't go wrong with tons of creature FX, and tons confusion with Pirates.

I will probably go see this, but only on the cheap. I like Depp, but did not see this movies because of his character alone. The storylines were only overcomplicated to the morons in Hollywood.

Pirates 3 was such a mess that I'd love to see a Priates 4 to make good on the original movie. A nice stand alone adventure would be ideal. I think there is a great deal of wear left in the series, but it HAS to be written well or there is no point.

I'm probably the ONLY Johnny Depp fan out there who does NOT want a fourth pirates movie. Sorry, but Jack Sparrow has been the subject of EXTREME overkill, and I'd rather see Johnny reprise Willy Wonka (after all Roald Dahl wrote a second novel in that series) than Jack Sparrow. I know Johnny liked the character and all but as a fan, I'm tired of it all and all the people who have no life to the point of reliving this movie over and over and over and...well, it's just overblown. It wasn't the overcomplicated storylines, it is pirate burnout! Don't get me wrong, the movies are awesome, but that is not the only character Johnny Depp does and I'd rather see him churn out new material than see this franchise churn out another sequel for the sake of money. Is it any wonder Disney no longer has Jack Sparrow characters walking around? I know I am in the minority here, but I'm sick to death of pirates and hope this movie NEVER happens. Gee...Gore Verbinski, and all the supporting cast are totally disinterested, what does that tell you? I think the fans should put this pirate thing to bed and leave it rest.

i would go is a 4th movie. captain jack is awesome! he is the only reason i went to see the last two movies.depp created jack perfectly,he is great to watch.

Pirates 4 should tie up any loose ends of the other 3 and it must be a true FINALE! I would like to see a young Jack Sparrow in a Prequel sequence a la Indiana Jones 3 in this one. So a "full circle" of events can be resolved at the end. I predict that Jack won't be back on film afterwards but an animated Jack will continue on tv!

I have to admit that I am a bit shocked, apalled and quite dissappointed that people apparently complained that the plot lines in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies were too complicated. I fear our society is going the way of the movie Idiocracy more and more each day.

PotC4 should showcase the epic and longstanding feud between pirates and ninjas. Having "Pirates" in the title, you know who's going to win in advance, but how will they do it? After all, in a fair fight, we all know ninjas would win. The only way pirates can win is to make a movie about it.

I thought the whole point of a movie was to entertain the audience and to have a chance to imagine yourself in a whole other world where anything is possible.
I am not a child so I don't want my storylines over-simplified, but life is hard enough that I don't want my entertainment to be over complicated either.
The things I like about Pirates is that it has everything! There is romance, adventure, fantasy, comedy, and all done with flair and imagination.
I love all of the characters, from the monkey to the pirate ladies. One thing I do hate about sequels is when the people who play the original characters are replaced, ala Batman(not the new remakes).
If they do decide to make a Pirates 4, I hope that they are smart enough to keep the same characters/actors as in the original trilogy. I like screenwriter 72's idea of a prequel but am open to other ideas or storylines.
All I can say is "Let the swashbuckling begin!"

Wrong.

PLEASE DON'T make anothe Pirates movie! The 3rd was on the ragged edge of self-parody, and I can guarantee a 4th _will_ be some sort of comedy/unintended spoof. The series needs to end now, before they completely ruin it.
By poppet at 3:11 AM ON 06/23/09
I would love to see a 4th and final Pirates.Tie up the loose ends and let it go to bed.Love Captain Jack and Will Turner but they have served their purpose.

They should name it Pirates of the Caribbean 4: a pirates tale
By oddball at 5:30 AM ON 06/23/09
Complex storylines is what makes movies good. It's the simplified storlines that most people find boring cause it usually makes the ending too predictable. I admit I had a rough time figuring out the first Pirates even had to watch with commentaries in order to get it, but it kept me engulfed into the movie and that's all that counts.
P1 is better than the other 2, Davy Jones just seemed like an annoying character and a P4 is overdoing it in my opinion. Jack Sparrow is a funny character, but after awhile you get used to him then he seems more like a normal character. 3 movies is enough.
By vermontfudge at 5:51 AM ON 06/23/09
Orlando Bloom was quoted saying even the writers couldn't explain the last 2 POTC's. From the DVD extras it appeared they hadn't finished writing 2 &3 when filming began. They should write POTC4 THEN film it. And they should lose the squid.

I cant wait until a 4th pirates movie!!!!!!! I agree it has to have all the same people playing the characters.... Johhy depp orlando bloom kiera knightley etc!!!!!!! I think these movies are highly entertaining and I love that they do take your imagimnation away from the reality of everyday life and I love the deatil in the movies... I can watch these movies over and over again and never get bored as matter of fact my husband hates most movies and finds most of them boring and they don't keep his attention except for the Pirate of C trilogy.... he likes the 70's version of the king kong movie too hahaha, he actually sits through and watches them with me. So I say Hurry Hurry Hurry and make the 4th Pirate movie ... we love the adventure the fantasy and the characters...!!! Bring it on!!!! I Know alot of women who are dieing for another Pirates movie so we can daydream about J.D. and O.B as captain Jack and Will Turner We love sexy sweet bad boy men!!!!!!! and we can imagine ourselves as Kiera Knightly a totally hot chick with men wanting us but also being extrmely strong and independent!!!!!! She rocks it!!!
By datbenik513 at 8:17 AM ON 06/23/09
Oh, for God's sake, please don't tell me that Kiera Knightley is a totally hot chick! I understand that tastes differ but you can't have SUCH a bad taste...
I'm also all in for a fourth movie. While #1 was the best one, IMHO, and #2 slightly underperforming, I do have a soft spot for the mysticism of #3.
So come on, let that sequel come!
By RayDuke at 8:57 AM ON 06/23/09
The part of Pirates was good. It had that 18th century pirate eerieness. Later it became too much with the ghost and the overlong swordplay. Johnny was great and chose the right pirate to guide him. The 4th movie should go back to sparrow's career as a pirate before the curse. Make it more dangerous.
By The Movie Whore at 9:50 AM ON 06/23/09
I am still trying to come to terms with the fact that the all powerful goddess in 3 transforms into basically a giant case of crabs. Horrible writing. I am quite skeptical but at least no more Knightly and Bloom. I could not sit through another movie with those two.
By Mike at 10:23 AM ON 06/23/09
Not to complicated, but 3 was about 40 minutes too long.
By Mike at 10:27 AM ON 06/23/09
A Pirates Tale.. I like it.. Pirates go west
By GoblinRevolution at 10:42 AM ON 06/23/09
It wasn't that the plots of 2 and 3 were complicated. I like complicated plots, but hated those movies. As Ask A Ninja said, it was like they took 20 different scripts and loaded them into a shotgun, fired the pages out in completely random order and filmed the movies from the resulting mess. The sequels lost all of the charm, fun and interest the the original film had. Once again, then Hollywood mantra of "bigger equals better" has destroyed what could have been a entertaining film trilogy.
I'll stick with the first film and try to forget the other two were made.
By blade at 11:59 AM ON 06/23/09
I like all the pirates movies but would have loved to see it more extreme but i do realize it is disney.
By Ashen at 12:28 PM ON 06/23/09
Complicated? When were the plot lines complicated? Perhaps to a 5 year old, but to an adult? Honestly, that makes me sad. I would enjoy seeing another movie. I just hope it focuses more on Jack then the other two. Mayhap it tells his story of trying to get to the Fountain of Youth. That'd be interesting.
By Wren at 1:15 PM ON 06/23/09
I think "Ask A Ninja's Pirates 2" review just about says it all. (on youtube)
By Zeb at 1:37 PM ON 06/23/09
I think, that if done properly, in more of an individual episodic fashion, this series could go on forever...(till you run out of time for pirates in tall ships anyway, but then again, that's what creative writing is for). I love Capt. Jack, but I love Capt. Barbossa just as much, and am looking forward to seeing the two in action again. Everyone else can go their merry way so long as we have those two.
And really, who gets tried of pirates?
By Trashcompactor at 2:20 PM ON 06/23/09
I throughly enjoyed all three movies, though I have to admit I had to watch 2 & 3 a couple times to fully understand them. Things move very quickly in these films. I can not get enough Capt. Jack. The only part of each film I didn't care for was the supernatural aspects. I have no doubt the films could've stood on thier own merit without ghosts, sea creature/men and another world for the undead.
By foulfellow at 4:59 PM ON 06/23/09
That Johnny Depp didn't see any of the "Pirates" movie has to tell you how much he cares about them. He was better in the TV series "Jump Street.". No sense making a 4 just for the sake of getting a paycheck!
By Jack's Girl at 6:39 PM ON 06/23/09
If you know anything about Johnny, he normally DOESN'T watch the movies he makes, so the fact that he hasn't seen the Pirate trilogy really means nothing. I hope that they make Pirates 4 and that it revolves around Jack and Barbossa and their search for the fountain of youth.
By romantic at heart at 12:51 PM ON 06/24/09
I loved the Pirates movies, but hated how they left it with Will and Elizabeth. The only way I'd watch the 4th movie is if they found a way to give Will his heart back, free him from the horrible situation he's in, and reunite him with his family and Captain Jack!
By yep at 9:07 PM ON 06/24/09
pirates 1 = Brilliant
2 and 3 = just okay eh
4 = needs to be more like one.. less ehh and more hell yeah
By KiMmI at 10:45 AM ON 07/10/09
I think that Johnny's right, to an extent. I think that in the 4th one there defiently needs to be more Jack, but it would be cool if he showed up in a geisha costume, though...LOL GO JOHNNY DEPP!!!! ;D
