Richard Hatch—who played Apollo in the original Battlestar Galactica and Tom Zarek in SCI FI's re-imagining—told Moviehole that he's watching the recently proposed feature film closely, though he's not involved, and has ideas as to how to reboot the franchise.
"I think they saw the success Paramount had with their Star Trek reboot," Hatch told the site. "But unlike Paramount, who seems to know the Star Trek audience, I don't think Universal ever quite got Battlestar. I just hope they hire the right people and make a good movie."
Universal Pictures quietly entered into negotiations with Battlestar creator Glen A. Larson to produce a big-screen version of the property he created, which would be unrelated to the recently concluded SCI FI series headed by Ronald D. Moore and David Eick, according to The Hollywood Reporter in February.
The film would reportedly preserve the premise—a ragtag fleet of human survivors runs from the murderous Cylons while seeking a new home on the mythical planet called Earth—as well as the characters of Adama, Starbuck and Baltar, but insiders told the trade paper that the movie will otherwise be a complete re-imagining of both series.
Hatch told Moviehole that he believes Universal "should go further back, like Star Trek" in terms of the setting for the film. With Trek, Hatch said, it "was still the characters we love, but they went back 20 ... 30 ... years to when they were just kids. But with Battlestar, they're just going to go back to the same timeframe we saw in the series and recast those roles. I don't think Star Trek would've been successful if they had recast the Star Trek characters at the same age as they were in the previous films. By going back, it gave that film a window so fans could expect a change of cast."
Hatch added: "I don't know what they're going to do, but I love Battlestar, and I think there are so many more wonderful stories to tell. And as much as I think the original series deserves the big treatment, I think the new series deserves a series of movies as well."

A BSG movie that has nothing to do with the re-imagined version from the past six years...
WORST. IDEA. EVER.
By forbetaorworse at 11:07 PM ON 06/10/09
I'm gonna be honest. The one thing they could learn for star trek is the one thing they can't learn from star trek which is that they have to appeal to the new viewers. A battlestar movie would be like trying to make LOST into a movie. If they brought it to the big screen they'd have to help the new viewers catch up which in my opinion would be impossible. If I hadn't seen the series leading up to firefly and gotten used to the ridiculous premise I'm afraid I wouldn't have liked it. That's my 2 cents if it makes any.

I'll second that. Oh, wait. Someone already did. Seriously, terrible idea. Get Moore onboard and MAYBE it'll be good. Or Michael Bay. As long as you're destroying it, might as well make as big an explosion as possible. ;)

Agreed. Enough with the "reboots" already.
By lostrekkie at 11:13 PM ON 06/10/09
forbetaorworse, I think you missunderstand what this movie is going to be about. I hope that didnt sound rude. It wasn't meant to be. The movie will have nothing to do with the series. It will be made for people who haven't seen either BSG series. It will be a complete reboot.
Personally I think its ridiculous. They just spent the past 5 years or so building this great show, then right when it ends, they reboot it. At least on Star Trek they gave it a few years before they announced the movie. The show wasn't even over before they announced this. Hell, there's still a BSG reimagined series movie coming out and a spinoff series, Caprica (which looks amazing BTW if the DVD movie is any indication). Your going to reboot the series WHILE your still working in the other universe of the series. That just seems stupid. I can understand a reboot years from now, but a reboot while your still working on the REBOOT OF THE ORIGINAL SERIES! How crazy is that. Anyways, did anyone actually like my really long ramble anyways?

If they were to ever do anything w/ the BSG universe, they need to go during the timeframe of the 1st war w/ the Cylons that was referenced during the Moore's vision. Maybe centered around young William Adama and the breakout of war.

Universal aren't going to make a movie for the two million people ho watched the new Galactica.
It just isn't popular enough.
It isn't like Sex In The City (which got a movie because it was actually popular) or even the old BSG which was watched by tens of millions of people worldwide and from which they released three movies made from the TV episodes.
By stealthgear at 1:11 AM ON 06/11/09
I'd be interested in Battlestar movie. But hey we are already getting that one directed by James Olmos.
I'm not sure what kind of theme they'd propose. I'd hope it would be relevant to some of today's problems. Ronald D. Moore's version unfortunately is still relevant, with all the war, torture, xenophobia, themes still in our headlines.... There isn't a better series that explores this out there. I would hope a new battlestar movie would focus on one of these or finds a new idea and gives us one hell of a firefight with good characters.

Hatch spent 25 years trying to get BSG back on the air, then when it did come back he whinged about it not being HIS BSG so they gave him a role to shut him up. His day is now past and it's time for him to finally move on. As far as the Big Screen Reboot, give it a rest before trying this.
By KEY1701 at 1:20 AM ON 06/11/09
I agree with RH. To me this is just Universal trying to get all the money in our pockets. They saw the money and praise the new Trek received, and how sucessful the new BSG tv show became. Universal went--Cha Ching!
By boppo414 at 1:56 AM ON 06/11/09
Don't you see, they're not going to do a move of the series that just concluded, that would require making a film that would actually be intelligent. No, they'll return to the simple campy premise of the first series but done up with better effects and much more explosions.

Avon is right, the new BSG was never as popular as Sci Fi wanted people to think. And it really wasn't that successful. Reruns of Enterprise got nearly the same ratings on Sci Fi. For most of it's run BSG was a drab, predictable soap opera that had just enough good episodes it keep it from becoming a complete waste of time. I can't imagine how Moore could possibly make a 2 hour movie interesting enough to entertain anyone other than the the show's Science-Soap fans.
For those of you fans of BSGTNS fans who think that this movie is aimed at getting your money, let me say this: I rather doubt Universal even cares if you see the movie. If they did they'd me making one based on the new series. You're a very small minority compared to the fans of other more popular franchises. Not to mention the fans of the original. You can't blame them for wanting to make something with a better chance of appealing to wider audience. As the hardcore fans of the new Star Trek would say: So what if the movie isn't just like the show? If you don't like it just watch your DVDs.
By otherland at 4:16 AM ON 06/11/09
Hey Universal!!!...stop trying to reboot BSG and go to an area never covered that will allow you free reign on a movie. Something that was at the core of both BSG series and their spin-offs, You can always do a movie on the universe at the time of Kobol and the reason it had to establish the 13 colonies and why it was destroyed. Maybe it can be the reason Galactica is so important as a name since "everything that happened will happen again" You can create a whole new world for Galactica Fans and open up a door for a new herd of possible new fans since nobody would know what to expect...can you imagine what moore could do without having to maintain the detailed mythos that the 2 BSG series have set....now that I would love to see

Surely this is yet more YARM? Let's have something new for f***'s sake.

Hatch has been invested in Battlestar Galactica for a long time. The opinions of anybody who has spent that much time trying to get a series to work should be discussed.
By Frohike at 12:13 PM ON 06/11/09
This won't be a reboot - just simply a remake to the sound of it. BSG series on Scifi was a reboot. Star Trek was a reboot.

Several people are clamoring for the rumored upcoming movie to feature the characters and plots from the recently ended re-imagined series on Sci-Fi and/or help from Ronald Moore. The fact is that Universal CANNOT make a Battlestar Galactica movie for the big-screen WITHOUT Glen Larson. Years ago, Glen Larson purchased the theatrical rights to Battlestar Galactica. This is why Universal was able to do the new series on television with just a nod to Larson. He owns the rights to any and all theatrical filming under the Battlestar name. Since he is on record for being against much of the themes, premises, and characterizations of the new series, it is not a surprise that the upcoming movie will be about the original series. Now, as to what form this new film will appear; remake with new cast playing the classic roles, continuation of the original series with some of the original actors reprising their roles and new actors as the focus portraying their children (Richard Hatch's original vision for his 1998 6 minute trailer, and also a vision shared by the ill-fated Fox Battlestar by Bryan Singer and Tom DeSanto), or a prequel of sorts to the original series is anyone's guess at this point.

The best part of that article is the last sentence quote from Hatch. Although I felt the new series fell apart at the end, it was still much better than the original and I am pleased that he feels it is worthy of continuing in films as well.
But instead of Galactica, I'd rather Universal was talking about Serenity 2.

WTF? Not sure what kind of toxic waste some of you people are smoking, but there hasn't been any 're-imagining' that has been worth watching. Need proof? Lost In Space. Battlestar Galactica. Star Trek. Land Of The Lost. I rest my case.
By darkwatch at 6:07 PM ON 06/11/09
Someone mentioned that they wanted to see something new instead of re-imagined. Here is an idea; a Mechwarrior (Battletech) movie. I liked the reimagined BSG but I would like to see something different. With the popularity of Star Trek and Transformers I think it's time for a Mechwarrior movie. They can use the lessons learned and the themes of BSG and translate that to a Mechwarrior movie. I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

If NBC-Universal really wants to piss everyone off, they could call the movie "Battlystar Galactyca." What do you think, Syfy?
By Zoreb at 7:49 PM ON 06/11/09
If they are going to reboot anything, why not "Land of the Giants". I loved that as a kid, and they can now do the special effects seamlessly, as shown in "Indian in the Cupboard". They can do a Irwin Allen disaster film tribute, too, by having more than just the seven castmembers, so that some can be captured, killed, etc.

all the crap he put Glen A. Larson through with his bs no wonder he didnt want to the him have BGS!!! Baby

Rob...you haven't made a case. You've just listed pictures that you did not like. You are certainly entiltled to not like any or all of the listed flicks/series, but simply listing them as examples of "reimaginings that didn't work" does not prove anything other than what YOU did not like.

Seriously Richard, you need to let it go. It was terrific, its done. Nothing Larson has touched in 20 years has worked. You need to let this go before you turn your reputation to putty.
By Rob at 8:15 PM ON 06/13/09
jeebees, but the examples speak for themselves. Why waste my time listing others? They are all the same. Lame rip-offs just trying to cash in on someone else's products by twisting them into something they aren't.

Well if they do remake it for the theaters, I expect it to have Sensurround just like the original did when it was shown in theaters....Just trying to inject a little levity into these heated debates.

The new movie, if it indeed happens, will NOT be about the new re-imagined series that was shown on Sci-Fi from 2003-2009. That will not happen. It will be interesting to see if Mr. Hatch will have any role whatsoever in the new film, especially since he produced a self-made continuation 6-minute trailer in 1998 and was originally against the new series until he received and accepted the role as Tom Zarek. On the other hand, it would be near certain that if any actor of the original series was to appear in the new movie, it would be Dirk Benedict.
