Sarah Connor creator Josh Friedman on why the show won't be coming back

\<i\>Sarah Connor\<\/i\> creator Josh Friedman on why the show won\'t be coming back
Cameron's (Summer Glau) chip is gone in the "Born To Run" finale episode

Of all the shows that got canceled last season, one of the hardest to lose was Fox's Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The series was canceled after two seasons of action, complicated mythology, rich characters and plenty of surprises, not the least of which was the series finale, in which John (Thomas Dekker) goes into the future, leaving Sarah (Lena Headey) behind in the past. The cancellation was all the more difficult to take considering that the lower-rated Dollhouse was picked up by Fox, while TSCC wasn't.

If you read creator and executive producer Josh Friedman's blog, you begin to realize that the viewers aren't the only ones having a hard time.

\<i\>Sarah Connor\<\/i\> creator Josh Friedman on why the show won\'t be coming back
John Henry (Garret Dillahunt)

Friedman writes: "Everyone says having your show canceled is like a death, but I've been dead before, and at least when you're dead you don't get thrown off the Warner Brothers lot for haunting your old parking space." He goes into much more graphic detail about his exit from the studio.

Earlier, Kevin Reilly, Fox's president of entertainment, offered an explanation as to why the network didn't renew Sarah Connor Chronicles.

"It was a good show," Reilly said. "It was not an either/or [with Dollhouse]. We did see it tailing off a bit. It had a nice creative core, but ultimately we made the bet on Dollhouse for the night." He added: "[It] was not an inexpensive show" and said that Fox had to "make some choices on the night. But, ultimately, we looked at the ratings track on Monday, where it had a pretty consistent run, and then on Friday, where it moved to. And that trend line was not pointing in the right direction."

While Friedman isn't any too happy about the loss of TSCC, he did offer some insight into the series when talked to SCI FI Wire in an exclusive interview via e-mail last week. Below is an edited version of our Q&A with Friedman about his favorite TSCC moments, the series finale and why he doesn't know if we'll see more Sarah Connor in the future.

In your mind, how does TSCC fit into the Terminator mythology? As an independent piece or part of the bigger whole?

Friedman: I think it would've been a mistake for me to get caught up in what is canon and what is not canon. I always felt TSCC owed a great debt to T1 and T2, and I was going to do everything I could to honor that. Over time, however, you also find yourself owing a debt to the work you're doing, the material right in front of your face. So you've got to make good with that and still try to maintain an integrity with the work that's inspired you. TSCC is an expression of the Terminator universe. But it's four years of creative decisions distilled into 31 hours that will probably not jibe with everyone's idea of the Terminator puzzle. That's OK. I go with the "uncanny valley" theory on this, as in most things: The closer you get to making one thing like another thing, the more the ways in which it differs stand out.

For you, over the two seasons, what storylines took on their own life, maybe in a way you didn't expect?

Friedman: I was pleased by how much we got out of Cromartie/John Henry [Garret Dillahunt]. Most of that is due to the genius that is Dillahunt—there's a reason David Milch couldn't leave him dead in Deadwood. I always knew we'd have a Terminator body aiding in the A.I. development, but I'll admit it wasn't always the Cromartie body. We explored other ideas there, but ultimately we couldn't stand removing Cromartie from the chessboard.

Terminator_TSCC_Sarah_john.jpg

On the flip side, what storylines never quite developed the way you hoped?

Friedman: Well, the most obvious answer involves all the things that we dropped due to the strike in season one. The high-school intrigue re the suicidal cheerleader and the guidance counselor was a chunk of it. We had a character who was blackmailing various students and teachers, and John would have run afoul of him/her. We never got that far, and by the time season two rolled around, I think everyone just wanted to move past it. Obviously that's an annoying attitude if you've invested time into that storyline, but for everyone who wanted to continue that, there [were] probably 10 who were happy to get the hell out of high school.

You made some controversial story choices at the end of the second season, like killing off Riley [Leven Rambin] and Derek [Brian Austin Green]. Why go there?

Friedman: I don't think killing Riley or Derek was particularly controversial. I think both events were organic outgrowths of the choices they made and the lives they led. Both of their deaths are among my favorite moments on the show. And we do see Derek again, albeit a different Derek.

What are you most proud of when it comes to The Sarah Connor Chronicles?

Friedman: What am I most proud of? Most weeks I was just proud we got a show onto the air. It's f--king difficult. But I guess I'm proudest that we never took the easy way out of a story problem, and we gave the audience credit for being able to follow us no matter where we went.

The ending could be looked at as an actual end to the series or as a cliffhanger. Was it difficult to come up with the finale? Why did you want to end it on such a big note?

Friedman: The finale wasn't really any more difficult than any other episode. Frankly, "Adam Raised a Cain" almost f--king killed the writers' room, so the finale was a vacation compared to that. I'd known for quite a while where we were headed, so once we got to that point it was pretty organic. I don't think I set out to end "on a big note," but I knew I wanted John Henry to be attacked, and the drone seemed the most dramatic way to hit that beat. I needed to drive people to the future, and making the present an extremely dangerous place to be seemed like an important part of the equation. ...

Do you ever see the story continuing, perhaps in a comic book or another format?

Friedman: I don't own this franchise or control it in any way. I can't just go make a deal to do a comic book or a DVD movie or anything like that. The people that control the franchise need to be interested in another iteration of not just Terminator, which clearly they are, but TSCC, which at this point they are not. I've tried to pull this proverbial band-aid off as quickly as I can, but I don't want that confused with me giving up on the show. It's been my entire creative existence for years, and nothing strokes my ego more than hearing about people clamoring for more TSCC and e-mailing network executives to that effect. But I want people to have a realistic understanding of what's going on. I owe them honesty.

Is there anything you'd like to say to the fans?

Friedman: I don't think there's much I could say to fans that I haven't already said. TSCC has been my life for almost four years, and the fans have been a huge part of that experience. Nothing exists in a vacuum, and television is nothing if not a social compact—I'll try to make something worth watching, and you'll try to watch it. It's a handshake, and you don't want to leave the other guy hanging. Hopefully, we'll try again soon.

this is a great disapointment seeing one of the best tv sci fi series i have ever watched , bite the dust

By DJ Jarak at 6:47 AM ON 06/08/09

It's too much to expect that you'll bring the show back long enough to finish the story we were all left hanging at the edge of but, a comic or a script would be nice. I have to know what was meant to happen next.

The topic of this article is misleading, i dont really see an explanation why tscc was cancelled. Allthough the further the bits of info are leaked, it seems that fans should hate WB rather than FOX.

By notty22 at 7:12 AM ON 06/08/09

As long as Jameron is dead, all is right in the Terminator universe. That little fanbase makes me sick.

By gorehound696 at 8:08 AM ON 06/08/09

I have a strong dislike for Dollhouse.I watched maybe 5 or 6 episodes and will never go near it again.I am bumed that TSCC was cancelled but it was on FOX and they did move it to firday and killed a good show.
now FOX won't be getting even a penny of my money till next may as i am boycotting them for a full TV Show season.

By Syberwolf at 8:31 AM ON 06/08/09

No matter what was being said, I remember waiting till the last minute when they announced it was canceled and they were keeping Dollhouse...utterly tragic..It made no sense...I love Dushku and some of Whedon's stuff but TSCC was by far a superior show...maybe its better Fox lets it go and another station picks it up....

By jj67 at 8:36 AM ON 06/08/09

Way to go Worthless Broadcasting (WB) and Fox. Dollhouse is a total piece of garbage. The only thing that I will watch on Fox is NFL football, that's if I can suffer through all of their commercials... TSCC rocked!

By Kirirur at 8:37 AM ON 06/08/09

Well, it's a shame that WB is not interested anymore in TSCC.... :(
I really cannot understand how it could be possible because I'm pretty sure that there are enough room for both Terminator film and TSCC television show in the world....

Seems like that if FOX would ever been interested, they however wouldn't sell it to them.... O_o

Boh.

By growger at 8:44 AM ON 06/08/09

Come People!! Speak up, for smegging hell!! I've been saying this for weeks. Write, e-mail, call Sci Fi channel and get them to pick up the series. You can't let this series end on a cliffhanger. If not continueing as a series maybe mini movies to tie everything up. It's the right thing to do!!!

By raimond at 8:59 AM ON 06/08/09

SciFi (if they were interested, they should at least announce that they are/were, right now about 3 mln tscc fans beliefe that they are not and therefore beliefe that a part of SciFi is also to blame) cannot do squat unless WB or whoever is the genius who owns the Terminator franchise isnt selling it. It is obvious that FOX did 31 episodes and for money reasons isnt interested anymore. I saw somewhere the explanation that WB cashes in heavily on the leased franchise profits and therefore it is not wise to buy a francise from WB and develop it into something brilliant like TSCC. So if you really want to hate somebody, hate WB.

By Kalms at 9:01 AM ON 06/08/09

Make some noise people! Let's take this show to a season 3.

This story deserves to be told in full.

please bring it back!!!

By nocturnal1 at 10:03 AM ON 06/08/09

Here's the deal as I've gleaned from reading all the sources. Dollhouse is cheap and could be forced to cut it's budget. T:SCC is expensive. The main reason it was brought back for a second season is that WB cut the price of the rights dramatically in order to use the show as a promo for the new movie. With the movie out they upped the rights back to where they had been, and Fox just couldn't justify the expense with the viewership. I agree with all of those who are blaming WB.

By steakguy at 10:05 AM ON 06/08/09

Look, the bottom line with this show was that most of the time, it was simply boring. Action only occurred every one to two episodes and the rest of the time it was just everyone standing around moping and yakking. I found it hard to sit through many without falling asleep. Given that, its low ratings and its cancellation, were not a surprise.

By raimond at 10:13 AM ON 06/08/09

to nocturnal1: "thank you for explaining"

By randomicity923 at 10:24 AM ON 06/08/09

Don't worry Josh, we will continue fighting for your show. We will complain to WB and Halycon at every opportunity.

By archer75 at 10:50 AM ON 06/08/09

The cancellation of TSCC and keeping dollhouse was not an either/or thing. One didn't have to go to keep the other.
Should dollhouse have been cancelled TSCC would have still been cancelled anyways.
It's an expensive show to make and the ratings were poor. And the movie didn't help as it didn't do that great either.

By dmatsch at 10:52 AM ON 06/08/09

"Write, e-mail, call Sci Fi channel and get them to pick up the series."

Sci Fi Channel? You mean the one that has wrestling and Ghost Hunters? SciFi isn't about good sci fi anymore, in case you haven't realized.

TSCC--best series ever! Great story, writers, actors, and soundtrack. Too bad the handlers don't get it.

Face it people - we live in a frakked up world where the only people who have absolutely no say in what is on TV are the people who actually watch it! The networks and the studios have gotten so bogged down in concerns about who gets what rights to what and what the future revenue streams might be and syndicarions and DVDs and who-knows-what-all that they've completely lost sight of what is actually important - putting quality shows on TV that people actually want to watch. Do that and everything else will fall into place.

I have yet to hear one single person say "Oh I am sooo glad that Dollhouse is coming back!" That's because no one wants to see any more of a show about sexual slavery. I like Eliza Dushku well enough, but the show just has no substance to it. It would have been a better miniseries.

TSCC on the other hand is mind-expanding and an intellectual thrill ride. It's cancellation is a crime against that portion of the TV consuming public that actually uses their brains occasionally. Fox has committed an amazing blunder by cancelling TSCC and keeping the lower-rated (and vastly inferior) Dollhouse. How long are we going to be paying for Buffy, anyway?

Next fall, when Dollhouse and its' stupid sitcom timeslot partners completely tank, Fox will moan and groan and make 27 excuses whu they failed (yet again). We will then be left to shake our heads sadly and say "If only.....TSCC".

By the way, those who have written and said that TSCC is boring are merely exposing themselves for the idiots they are. If you can't keep up with an intellectually challenging show please just go watch American Idol or some other such crap and quit your bellyaching!!

There, I feel better now.

By Muldfeld at 11:18 AM ON 06/08/09

Thanks for the interview!

Thanks very much for trying to do innovative things, Mr. Friedman, and a huge hug to Toni Graphia for being my favorite writer on the show -- just as she was amazing on BSG.

It stinks that the idiots who mangle the Terminator franchise have that much control over "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" because so much of it came from Mr. Friedman and the writing staff. Sure, it was inspired by the original films, but can anyone say that this show would have explored so many interesting themes had it been carried out by Mostow or McG?

I also want to say I loved the Riley arc; she was a great actress and the character had such a vitality, and the 3-parter in which she and Jesse were killed was my favorite of the series by far! "Adam Raised a Cain" was also amazing. I could have used fewer moments trying to repeat what happened in the movies, though.

Anyway, thanks so much, and here's to the studio seeing the light and lobbying Sci Fi to air the show on a channel that would be happy to have those kinds of viewer numbers.

By starkiller at 11:28 AM ON 06/08/09

Surely there is some way to get TSCC back, maybe fewer effects, crashes heard but not seen, CGI backgrounds (like Sanctuary) instead of on location, if that's cheaper. It seems CW could still put it on TV or some international syndication deal or maybe online or direct to DVD. This show has a really big following if you aren't relying just on Nielsen boxes but counting people who couldn't watch live TV on Friday night or who were watching in other countries and even downloading illegally because that's the only way they could get it. There has to be a way for WB to make money on that, not just on live eyeballs in one country during one hour on one night.

This story has to continue, Thomas Dekker has really made it look like he has been a teenager developing into a future leader and Lena Headey, although I had my doubts at first, has really brought it in the second season and made me believe in her as the still a little bit crazy, and still determined to save the world Sarah Connor we saw in T2. Derek, Allison/Cameron, Kyle, even many minor characters have captured my imagination. So many questions left unanswered that I really care about more than any other show I have ever watched. Josh Friedman, James Middleton, Ashley Miller, Zack Stentz, the other writers, the cast and crew, and probably many others we haven't heard about, have really made me feel in my heart like the future depends on what happens next in this story. Unlike other TV shows I have seen, I could never guess what comes next.

By _Maltheus_ at 12:19 PM ON 06/08/09

This was, by far, the best show Fox had. I agree, that they should cut down on the effects, if necessary to afford another season. TSCC was more about character arcs anyway. The people who care more about action and CGI weren't watching it anyway. Between this, Pushing Daisies, Kings and Reaper, it hasn't been a good year for any of the newer shows I watch. Once Lost (and perhaps Supernatural) is over, only Showtime and HBO will have any quality shows left. That's sad.

By ommytror at 12:36 PM ON 06/08/09

The article stated, "The cancellation was all the more difficult to take considering that the lower-rated Dollhouse was picked up by Fox, while TSCC wasn't." But after TSCC moved to Fridays, the Nielsen numbers consistently showed Dollhouse beating it every week. I liked both shows but that statement is inaccurate.

Sorry to see it go.

By Joe B. at 12:58 PM ON 06/08/09

Sci Fi won't pick up the series...they have no money left. They spent it all ordering new office stationary, etc. for their SyFy name change...

By m_33 at 1:33 PM ON 06/08/09

No matter how long it would take, how it would be: on air, direct to dvd, syndication, book, comics... T:SCC must come back.
Don't give up Fans, send some written mails, emails, join the resistance ;-)

By guarddog8471 at 1:41 PM ON 06/08/09

Think about this people...they just said it had a consistant run on Monday nights. Then they move it to Friday, and they didn't like the ratings direction it took. Basically, they killed a great show by putting it in the death zone known as Friday nights. Nice boneheaded move, execs at Fox. Dollhouse will fail this season, because it is unwatchable garbage. I hope it only lasts a few episodes and then they finally pull the plug...

By oracle at 2:03 PM ON 06/08/09

"we looked at the ratings track on Monday, where it had a pretty consistent run, and then on Friday, where it moved to. And that trend line was not pointing in the right direction"

You move a show to Friday Night aka Death Night and are then suprised there is a drop in ratings?!?!?!?

What a fraking moron!

By Teri Davis Newman at 2:07 PM ON 06/08/09

DollHouse BLOWS!! TSCC was such a great show and then you move it to Friday nights so the ratings drop because everyone goes out on Friday night and we all have to TIVO it and then you kill it for the festering pig that is Skank-house?

By PadrePedro at 2:23 PM ON 06/08/09

What a waste of such a remarkable show. I wish it could be completed, by way of a TV movie or even a comic book, if not picked up by another station.

By Gill Avila at 3:20 PM ON 06/08/09

Leaving us with a unresolved cliffhanger is the ubersuck. Why not put out an original trade paperback (so it will fit on the shelf with the dvd's) that resolves the story and brings us up to just before T3? I wish they'd done that with Blade: The Series, Dark Skies, and Threshold.

By ToWanna at 3:23 PM ON 06/08/09

Fox made a huge mistake cancelling TSCC. It was one of the best shows on TV...much better than Dollhouse. I was watching both but now I won't be watching either one and it's just sad.

By lenageek at 3:31 PM ON 06/08/09

SCC is one of my favorite shows of all time and it's truly frustrating to see that WB has no interest in renewing it and puts their $ behind the all explosions but no story Terminator Salvation. Sigh. And we loyal fans who have been fighting for the show get screwed once again. And as for FOX, when Dollhouse tanks in the ratings on Fridays next year, I won't be surprised.

By cornea503 at 4:56 PM ON 06/08/09

Its a shame, but what else is new. Keep garbage like American Idol and bs "reality" crap and dump great shows like this . You guys can write the studios all you want but since when has that ever made a difference? at least in the long term.

A Bump for Paladin's earlier comment (quoted below) -- and esp the "Art" part.

Face it folks, we're in a universe with a generally "mindless" TV audience. TSCC -- with all of its wonderful creativity and meaning -- just can't get through to the "masses."

And, they're the ones that determine the Show's economic success.

I look forward to the day when we will have PPV (Worldwide) TV on the Web (at a small fee -- $2-3 per Ep -- with perhaps "subscription" options).

Then, things like TSCC will be possible -- and profitable.

It's coming. Hang in there -- you wonderfully creative show runners (JF), directors, writers, et al.

And, tks *so* much for the two seasons on this fascinating Series. What a ride!

Subscription/PPV is coming someday.

I just wish T:TSCC is the jumper that brings it.

Fox's new lineup is already failing, one show didn't even last five episodes before bein sh!tcanned.

The plan is to keep hammering the execs, all of them involved, until we get it back, in what ever form that's profitable.

If it's PPV or Web Subscription Download, whatever it takes.

Don't give up hope and don't listen to the Fox 'plants' on the TTSCCWiki, who do everything they can to deflect attention to the 'new lineup' and away from TTSCC.

If we give up on tv with brains, then the future of tv will be nothing but 'Idolitry', and mental drool.

Rise!

By soulwatcher at 7:20 PM ON 06/08/09

Come on Franchise owners. Just change the title to Terminator: The Connor Chronicles and continue the story line. Sell it to NBC, WC, TNT, BBC, or SciFi.

The series is just as good as Heroes, better than Doctor Who (which I like too), on par with Stargate SG1, Buffy, BSG, Farscape, Firefly, Medium, although; I'm not sure about Sanctuary yet.

As a fan of science fiction / Fantasy, I usually only watch these types of venues. The comedy half hours are too repetitive of older series. Watching reality shows where people like to torment themselves, make me think of Sadists & Masochists, which I'd rather not. The news is bad enough.

Again, I like to be in the possible or impossible realm of our world when I space out on TV. I like to think about Science achievements to overcome or make better.

Sorry about not remembering who owns the franchise; WB? What the frak, they supported Charmed for 9-10 years.

Dollhouse? It's OK but the story line will get stagnant if Josh W. doesn't add continuation week to week so we'll want to watch to see what happens next.

Bring back Terminator: Connor Chronicles to our TV for at least 3 more years.

By treqqer1 at 7:44 PM ON 06/08/09

As I sit here reading all these comments and sensing the frustration inherent in them, I am struck by a grim reality...
We, the grey matter using minority, are in the process of being overwhelmed by the rising tide of the deeply stupid. How else to explain the immense popularity of brain-averse tripe like American Idol and Dancing With the Nobodys?

Here's an idea for Fox - since Friday night is an erstwhile TV graveyard, and since the legions of morons who love it will apparently make any sacrifice for the almighty American Idol - why not make Friday night "Idol Night"? That way, the morons can all stay home and watch Idol on Friday nights, Fox can finally get the ratings they seem so desperate for on Fridays, and the better shows (meaning ALL the other shows) can be on nights when they might actually have a chance to succeed!

Just an idea for a way we and the 'rising tide' can co-exist.

Think if we took up a collection we could pay Fox or WB or whoever to keep TSCC going?
I'll chip in.

T4 NEVER had anything to do with the TV show. Friedman stated before TSCC ever premiered that they had made a decision to only accept T1 and T2 as cannon because of the fan backlash after the very mediocre T3.

As for ending the show on a cliffhanger; watch Farscape sometime. That was just evil. I'm glad I didn't break down and start watching that series until after The Peacekeeper Wars came out,

Normally I am right there lamenting the death of a quality show; but TSCC had it's shot and blew it. The TSCC ratings were already starting to erode when it shifted to the death slot; and Dollhouse did do better EVERY week. The show with higher potential won for once. In fact, many Whedon fans blamed TSCC for Dollhouse's ratings until Prison Break came back. (Granted, by that point, the "It's already cancelled!" and quality of the early stand alone episodes had contributed to a lot of people shifing to DVR from same night viewing.)

The first season tried very hard to balance the run-for-your-life-literally mentality of the James Cameron movies with the more constrained scope of a TV show. Then the second season stopped for a breather and didn't really start running again until the very last episode. How much of T1 or T2 involved Sarah and Ahnold discussing the price of tea in China?

TSCC was cancelled because the story was just wheel spinning for 3/4 of season 2. At least 90% of the Riley-Jesse story was utterly pointless. John Henry developed a bit slowly, but was the best part of season 2. Weaver served almost no point the entire season, and then is a hero at the end? Ellison works for a Terminator for MONTHS without having the first thought that something isn't right with the boss?

By kargg at 10:11 PM ON 06/08/09

Jedi Strke: You mentioned Farscape ending on a cliffhanger. Apparently you missed the movie that followed. It tied everything together and wasn't really that bad.

But yes, I think that seeing TSCC yanked and WB keeping all it's other lousy shows, shows that they know nothing about TV or what the real fans want.

By ThePoint at 10:26 PM ON 06/08/09

I don't know why WB doesn't put this show on their co-network CW. Put it on at 10 pm ET following Smallville and Supernatural for a three-way punch.

By duneboat at 11:08 PM ON 06/08/09

face it folks, as a lover of TSCC, and as saddened as I was over the show not coming back, it"s over. not only will it not be on any other network, but the way the theatrical release is tanking, we may not even get another movie.

By omni at 11:20 PM ON 06/08/09

A few years back, Jericho had a great first season. The show was canceled after a great cliffhanger finale. The Fans were pissed. The fans were emailing and calling. A large group of fans sent peanuts to the network (there was a plot based reason for this).

The moral of the story? They brought the show back for a second season. I think the second season had a different writer, and it seemed about 80% the quality of the first season. But everyone got some closure.

This show seems to be getting more action than Jericho did, so keep up the outrage.

By Scifialways at 11:40 PM ON 06/08/09

$$$$ drives the business, plus uncaring CEO's. We the fans have to get our SCI-Fix as we can, when we can. Sarah Connor gave us something to look forward too. Sci Fi Channel is losing it's fanbase with Ghost Stories and westling, get a clue. We have enough reality garbage on otherr stations. Wish Sci-Fi wouldd pick up Sarah Conner, cast and crew gave us something half way worth while..... onto the future another star may shine..at least for a brief while... hang in there hopes to the future of Sci Fi

Josh you need to stop gather 22 scripts drop them at CW USA ScyFy & NBC.
Why because Fox is unfair in looking for Idol numbers from the series after moving it around top series which it could have opened for.

Look at Scrubs 4 networks all with new episodes & synication.
Don,t you give up.Don,t let Fox kill you dead you a got brillant story to tell.
So move on get another network to see your plans.
Fans are behind you 100000000000000000000%

Dekker was the best John Connor out of everyone who played him. I am sorry to see that Chronicles won't be back. The first season was excellent, the second season seemed aimless to me though.

By Lanie Grace at 3:56 AM ON 06/09/09

@duneboat

You are very correct, this show is over and not coming back ever, anywhere as TSCC.

Friedman himself says in this article "There is no Interest in bringing back TSCC".

I am not real sure how much more of a "credible" source the fanboys are looking for or a more clear statement.

The only thing left for JF is some form of accepting resposibility in TSCC's demise.

By raimond at 4:08 AM ON 06/09/09

Yes, lets all blame the executive producer of TSCC who is currently unemployed, he is the (and lets all make it really clear, let there be no confusion about it) the OnlyOne to blame.

By Lanie Grace at 4:23 AM ON 06/09/09

@raimond

I know you are trying to be sarcastic, but you are really pretty much on point. If JF had created a show the fans wanted, it would still be here.

Terminator was a 25 year old, BILLION dollar franchise that needed no introduction and was a household name in 70+ countries.

He started out with 18,6 million fans and ended with less than 3.6, that took some talent.

He ignored the fans, the ratings and his bosses to produce some really convoluted and boring story line that killed the show. YES it was his fault.

UNEMPLOYED??? Gimme a break, This guy is a millionaire several times over. I don't think there is any financial hardship going on over at the Friedman house over unemployment.

~Lanie~

By raimond at 4:59 AM ON 06/09/09

So in your opinion, the fans wanted what?

More explosions?

A different bodybuilder shaped T-8xx model every week?

Oh wait, I have an idea, the show should have had about 4 explosions each week, one new good and one bad new terminator in each episode and the good terminator should have became a father figure to JC every week, before dying heroicly in the end of an episode.

And now, back to the topic of explosions... they should have blown up some huge military industrial complex in the climax of each episode, for this show have even a slightest chance of actually being intelligent.

Yes, we should all write thank you notes to the WB for killing the most boring TV show ever, it has no fans left anyway...

It aint even worth mentioning in the scifiwire, dont really know why everyone keeps bringing back the topic...

By Lanie Grace at 5:32 AM ON 06/09/09

The show still had 3.6 million very dedicated fans at the finale, but those numbers aren't enough. Very dedicated and very loyal to say the least.

What you are sarcastically pointing to is the extremes and no that wasn't the answer at all.

A liitle less fun with "Crazy Sarah", A little less useless characters (Reilly/Jesse) and a story a little more true to the Terminator Franchise. A little less convoluted sub plots like the three dots, Kaliba, Sarah's cancer, Reilly, Reilly and Reilly....

In the begining 18.6 million started out and more than 12 million returned the next week. The ratings dropped more and more as the story diverged from the Terminator Canon. Simply put it it on a graph.

During S2 when the ratings were at a critical point and knowing that people didn't want to see the plot turned back toward the title character, he gave us several Sarah centric episodes that culminated in series low 3.0 million viewers on March 05. JF even admitted on the the FOX blog he knew that was going to piss people off. He ignored the fans, the ratings and his bosses. We paid for it.

Two things occurred he didn't expect, the fans didn't watch and FOX didn't renew in the face of T4.

By raimond at 7:54 AM ON 06/09/09

It seems to me that even some people who are trying really hard not to identify themselves as fans, suffered horribly watching the entire 31 hr run of TSCC for no appearent reason. But still wathced nevertheless.

By FOX&WBSUCKS at 10:10 AM ON 06/09/09

I have never seen such a motivated and faithful fanbase like TSCC's fanbase and WB will 'choose' to continue to ignore us, well then I say we BOYCOTT until they choose other wise!

As for FOX, they are dead to me. Good for nothing network! Dullhouse sucks monkey balls.

By cattypie at 11:17 AM ON 06/09/09

I enjoy Dollhouse. Yeah, it had its problems in the beginning, but it got into its groove after ep 6 or so.

I enjoyed TSCC, and I'm sorry it was cancelled. However, those of you who blame Dollhouse for TSCC's demise make no sense to me. It's like blaming the other woman/man when your spouse cheats. I just don't get all of the misplaced anger against Dollhouse with regard to TSCC. Everybody was free to watch one without the other or both or neither.

By Melissa at 12:07 PM ON 06/09/09

Bring TSCC Back ASAP!!!
I Love that show.

By Lanie Grace at 12:14 PM ON 06/09/09

@raimond

You seem to result to extremism and sarcism to try and create a smoke screen to substantiate your generalties.

I am a fan, it was not horribeat all.

I pointed to specific details that could have been better and probably contributed to the cancellation that is all.

On the subject of blaming JF I defy you to provide an intelligent response to the following.

If none of this was his fault and JF was a victim of circumstances, then I ask you, who really was running the show?

If Josh Friedman wasn't running the show, then he needs tp quit calling himself the Executive Producer.

By starkiller at 1:39 PM ON 06/09/09

"the theatrical release is tanking" Really? I thought it was doing rather well internationally, which goes to show how broad the fanbase of the Terminator franchise is.

Anyone who thinks any part of the show was aimless wasn't paying attention. OK, the first season may have had some things not go anywhere because of the strike. The second season, despite the interference of bigwigs, was mind blowing (of course you do need a functioning brain.) Even the so-called stand alone episodes were contributing to the storyline and characters, if you were paying attention. Fox aimed its ads at the wrong people, promising jiggle and action, so many people who would have loved it for its story and characters skipped it.

Josh Friedman really did get it. Fox and the t&a crowd didn't get it.

By Lanie Grace at 2:02 PM ON 06/09/09

@starkiller

Once again, going to extremes.

T&A had nothing to do with maintaining a story in line with the canon of Terminator. 18.6 Million people tuned in to see a "Terminator" show for the pilot and 90% of those came back the next week. However 15 Million of them left as the story diverged.

JF undeniably admits straying away from Terminator canon at the angst of the fans, the ratings and Fox.

Result was cancellation.

To your credit, YES FOX did promote it as T&A with the "Grindhouse" fanfare. However, the purpose of marketing is to bring in NEW first time fans, that is what the FOX promotions job is.

It was JF's job to keep the millions and millions that were already there.

JF failed in that mission.

By scifinut at 2:19 PM ON 06/09/09

If we truly want it back, we must do several things...
1. Keep hammering at the execs at Fox that made this decision.
2. Make sure Dollhouse and the show they replaced TSCC with tank on Fridays. That means no watching TV, no DVR, no watching on the websites, and no catching it on HULU after it airs.
3. Purchase episodes on ITUNES and pre-ordering the Season 2 Box Set. Don't just buy 1 or the other, buy both if you can. Because when all is said and done the bottom line is $$$.
4. Keep up trying to get SciFy to bring the show back (and drop the wrestling and the 'reality' crap that they currently have.) WB would bring it back if any TV channel showed an interest (again comes down to $$$)
5. Begin hammering the owners of the franchise and the execs of the studio to bring it back in some format.

Last but not least, Fox made the decision to keep Dollhouse based on one person's name and fact that he had two long running hits (Buffy and Angel) and one cult favorite that lasted not even one season and took three years to make 1 movie. They are hoping that Dollhouse can become the former but would satisfied with the latter. We need to deny them both and then rub salt in the wound when they are forced to cancel it. The "I told you so" emails would drive them insane and force them to think twice about ending a more popular series in favor of a gamble.
Doug

By Lanie Grace at 2:38 PM ON 06/09/09

@Scifinut
Options 1 & 2 are pointless. FOX is done with TSCC, period with no futher discussion. This has been said by both Kevin Reilly VP FOX and Josh Friedman. I consider them both credible sources on this matter.

Dollhouse will definitly have a 3rd season no matter what the ratings. Kevin Reilly's personal rep is behind that. He won't let it get canned the next season after he stood so firmly behind it. Besdies Joss Wheddon is a smart guy, he will adapt and change the show as required. Ratings will jump especially if he lands Summer Glau in a major role, which already seems to be a strong possibility. There are a LOT more Summer Glau fans than there ever were Cameron fans. That you can take to the bank, and Wheddon will.

The only thing that could possibly save TSCC is MASSIVE DVD sales like Family Guy and the Firefly buying frenzies.

The last obstacle is WB/Halcyon, they have indicated they have less than a zero interest in anything TSCC related. It is dead and buried as far as they are concerned.

JF has asked the fans to move past TSCC.

JF knows this and this is why he hasn't bother to lift a finger in helping save TSCC.

By starkiller at 2:47 PM ON 06/09/09

Yeah, and there's a reason you've earned the title SWNMNBM "She whose name must never be mentioned"

By raimond at 3:01 PM ON 06/09/09

Unfortunately what comes to the future of the show, I must agree with the (damn, I cannot force myself to write her name). For TSCC even to be concidered again, WB must be interested. They hold the franchise and if they are not interested in selling, there is no reason to look for buyers either. At this moment it seems, that they could not give out the franchise even for free.

I still disagree with the JF accusation. If JF would have actually had pull on FOX timeslots, tscc would have been on prime time. He made a good show I´ll stick to this claim (why else would we be on the 70th comment on this matter) but the TSCC financial schemes were/are/will be a little more trickier (expensive) so there was/is/never will be no reason for FOX (or no one else for that matter) to donate their prime time income to WB.

I continue to blame WB.

And I really dont get the Hardcore faction who believes that first 3 minutes of any franchise are good, everything goes downhill starting from the 4.th minute and after 6.th minute, the ex. producer should be shot to the limbs.

Several times.

Until he dies.

By Rocket254 at 4:29 PM ON 06/09/09

To all RESISTANCE FIGHTERS:
go to the WB customer service page and leave a message asking about possibility to preorder the 3rd season DVD. They must know, that there is a big demand for that product! Here is the address http://www.warnerbros.com/main/help/customer_service.html

WE WILL NEVER GIVE UP!!!

By T800HappyMeal at 5:30 PM ON 06/09/09

Hey, James Cameron, once you're done with Avatar, how about giving TV another shot by resurrecting TSCC. This article clearly indicates that Friedman isn't, and never has been, up to the task of handling the Terminator franchise.

By the way, why wasn't Toni Graphia the head writer of this show? She was the only one handing out life jackets before the ship sunk with the "Fun With Crazy Sarah" episodes.

Thanks to the incompetence and general lack of interest by a certain Executive Producer, we're subject to another season of Dollhouse, while TSCC is lost in the void of cancelled TV shows.

But, I must say, even though Dollhouse is awful tripe, at least Joss Whedon has the brass to stick with his shows through thick and thin. You can't say the same about a certain someone.

By bombgar at 5:43 PM ON 06/09/09

WB won't back TSCC financially.

FOX wouldn't support it with decent time slots or decent advertising.

Seems like not posting on random, non influential, blah blah sites is a good use of one's time.

Josh Friedman has been one step ahead of us the whole way.

And people like Lannie Grace can only lie about stuff and make up bad fan fiction to get attention (and post, stalk ex executive producers)

A sad state of affairs, I say.

By Gazereths at 6:04 PM ON 06/09/09

It would be nice to see some kind of closure to the story...Obviously i would like a live action conclusion but a comic book series or a novel would be awesome!

Thanks to JF and the rest of the crew and cast for the great 1.5 seasons that i will watch over and over again....Hopefully the season 2 DVD sales will be high enough to warrant some sort of continuation.

By rubiconjeep at 6:47 PM ON 06/09/09

This is very disappointing news to hear. Each week when I was TSCC, it wasn't enough. I found myself so drawn to the TV that I wanted more at the end of the hour.

There MUST be another network you can go to Josh? Who needs FOX. The fans will go wherever the show goes.

I would love to see at least one more season with a correct ending to the series.

All of the good Si-Fi movies have been terminated. : (

I hope someone will re-consider. The comments here and elsewhere on the internet are clearly a sign that we want and love this show!!

Thanks!

By chrizby1 at 7:32 PM ON 06/09/09

Man we need you!

By Eon at 8:15 PM ON 06/09/09

By SurfingEagle at 8:26 PM ON 06/09/09

I don't think JF did everything perfect, but I'm a fan of the show. So, he must have done something right. Any ways, I would support any effort that JF makes to continue his vision of TSCC if it meant an actual continuation of the show in some form.

By aceplace57 at 8:27 PM ON 06/09/09

By burnishedcopper at 9:33 PM ON 06/09/09

That TSCC was scratched for Dollhouse (OK - at least a somewhat interesting T & A show) is still a disappointment. I don't see Dollhouse having that much staying power as the young pretty things age, take time off to have kids, etc. TSCC at least captured your immagination and these new twists left me wanting more. Maybe you should look at made for TV Movies as a way to continue the story and satisfy the show's devoted fans. I would watch them.

By James at 9:38 PM ON 06/09/09

If we really want to see a 3rd season of TSCC, we need to convince Warner Brothers that there's money to be made. It's an expensive show to produce and it didn't get great ratings.

I have an idea. I don't have the time to run with it, but someone else might.

You can already pre-purchase the 2nd season on DVD at Amazon.com. We can start a campaign to pre-order season 2 on DVD. If we all order multiple copies, we might get the attention of Warner Brothers. I know that not all of us can afford to order multiple copies, but some of us can. If we buy 1 million copies worldwide or even half a million, I think Warner Brothers will see the potential profits of a 3rd season.

The campaign would need to be organized and publicized. It would be best if we all purchased our copies from the same website.

1 million may seem like a high number, but if 250,000 fans bought an average of 4 copies each we'd reach that goal. I know, it seems like a lot of money, but you can give the copies away as Christmas or birthday gifts.

I really hate to see this series end. I'll would buy 5 copies now and another 5 copies later.

JF had some really great additions to the terminator franchise.

He also added some travesties.

Its difficult to adapt a classic movie to a TV series in any genre without devolving into trite pablum watered down for the public.

I am glad that the show is cancelled. I would rather see it die than sink any further into 'fairytale vampire terminator princess in a cadillac coffin' land.

I will miss John Henry Vs. Skynet. I will miss Jesse/Derek/Queeg stories. I will miss Catherine and Savannah and Murch.

But I will not miss 'cut me open and feel my hot power supply' scenes. Not because I'm a puritan. Just because they are f**king ludicrous.

If you're reading this Josh, thanks for an absolutely brilliant show.
I enjoyed the Reilly/Jesse storyline, I was in a serious depressed mood the whole week after Derek was shot, until the moment at the end of BTR when I saw him again, I thought finding out more about Cameron/Allison's back story was inspired, actually I could go on and on about why I loved the show....all the actors were fantastic (incl the supporting actors), and the writing was really original and creative. I don't understand the people who just want "Terminator of the week" storylines rather than intelligent plot developments and character exploration....anyway, I'm still trying to do my part to bring the show back.
Thanks again, Josh. Like many others, I've never been inspired to fight for a show until TSCC came along.

Josh, we appreciate your work. I support your hard work 100% just to get TSCC on the air. I still don't quite understand why SCC won't come back because you say you have not given up on it. If it's the SOBs at F ox who own the copyright to the characters, then what is their personal gripe against the fans? What do they have to gain by keeping the rights and not even showing reruns? What gives?

By raimond at 2:34 AM ON 06/10/09

Im really sorry, Ill try to make this my last post to this article.

At first- this article is at the 100th comment now. So, I dare you all who hate TSCC and think it was awful, should not evernever be made again etc etc etc- show me an article about different franchise that has reached 100 comments here.

And now, back to the question of leadership. I have a slightly different approach to dealing with Skynet/WB syndicate. Instead of making pleas to the machine, I intend to get revenge. And Ill start it by trying to intentionally boycott majority of its production.

For some time.

Until maybe something good comes out.

Which I hope from WB will not.

And I will definitely not watch Dollhouse, even if Summer Glau, her sister and her mother will be in it. Dont insult my intelligence.

By kernel_thai at 2:37 AM ON 06/10/09

I dont get the fan campaigns at all. Its a different show each year. Next year it will be Dollhouse or Fringe that goes for the same stupid reason. What is the fan reaction? Maybe if Salvation is big it will help T:SCC. Wrong. T:S making big money just shows their plan worked. They used T:SCC to promo T:S then threw it away like a used kleenex. Sorry, I didnt see T:S. They didnt reem me and then get my $10 besides.

Maybe if the T:SCC dvd sell a lot of copies theyll bring the show back. Nope, they wont. Theyll just take all that money and laugh at u. I'll certainly be buying the blu-ray in Sept. One copy that I'll prolly wear out enjoying. What I wont do is buy any of there other shows or FOX's either. Each time I dont drop $50 on Fringe or 24 or Bones or Dollhouse I send a nice email reminding them of why they lost my money.

I wont boycott either network. Ill keep watching my shows. I enjoy them. Instead, Ill pick a few commercial sponsors each night and spend a couple minutes emailing their websites. Ill explain that I dont buy from any sponsors who advertise on WB or FOX because they dont care about there fans. The nets dont care about me, but they desperately care about their advertisers. The advertisers care about me and my money.

Now does me doing this accomplish anything? Nope. But T:SCC has about 5 million fans when u throw in DVR and streaming. If only 1% did this then networks would stop ignoring ur opinions. If 10% did theyd make the movie just to get rid of. us Or u can continue to give them ur money cause that might work. Sure it will..

By LiveWire at 10:21 PM ON 06/11/09

Josh, you did an absolutely fantastic job with this series. I personally think its a true loss. The writing, directing and especially the acting through excellent casting made this show head and shoulders above so many undeserving others who did not get cancelled.

While I hope that Sci Fi would pick this up, I know its highly unlikely.

Nonetheless, kudos for adding a great piece of entertainment to the television landscape.

a few years back a show called "The Pretender" was cancelled, the network followed with 2 2hr "tv movies" to wrap it up.
Why can't they do that with all he new series.
I am sick of investing time into good shows only to have them cancelled. I will have to start finding better things than wasting energy on TV shows. T:SCC was very enjoyable, and really most shows on TV these days you like enough to watch faithfully are reasonably solid. If the networks dont have some way to wrap up all the series they kill, they will continue to lose viewership. When they sign actors, get a commitment for a 2hr TV movie upfront for any series killed early......
T:SCC may be the last series I watch, in the future, if a show servives 3 years, maybe I will watch the DVDs and catch up... maybe...

By commandr at 5:31 AM ON 06/14/09

By gpchicago28 at 11:39 AM ON 06/17/09

I can't believe that the TSCC was cancelled. This was my favorite show on TV. Even my husband liked it. And to add insult to injury you renew "The Dollhouse". I tried watching that show a few times and it was just god awful!!!! I can't believe that they kept that show and cancelled the Terminator. We need to do something to get this show back on the air. Until then, my husband and I will not be watching Fox period.

By randomperson at 11:30 AM ON 06/20/09

T:SCC was the best show on television - full of substance, mythology, compelling and provocative story lines and superb acting. I was extremely disappointed that it was cancelled. The bottom line is that Kevin Reilly at Fox admitted in the interview that the whole decision was about money. My reaction: "Fox sucks". I respect Joss Whedon for Firefly, etc, but Dollhouse was a big miss for him, along the lines of David Milch's miss with "John from Cincinnatti" on HBO. Fox picking Dollhouse over T:SCC was as bad of a decision as HBO picking "John from Cincinnatti" and cancelling "Deadwood". I predict Dollhouse is gone after next season, whereas T:SSC probably would have had staying power because the quality was so much higher.

Fox made a huge mistake cancelling terminator - it was the best show on tv and tv wont be the same without it. You have to bring it back or millions of terminator fans will die!

I am not watching fox until terminator returns. we have to do something about this cancellation because the Dollhouse is a god-awfull show and terminator the best thing i've ever seen on tv.
