Why there's still hope for a sequel to The Goonies, and what it might be

Why there\'s still hope for a sequel to \<i\>The Goonies\<\/i\>, and what it might be

Every few years, someone gets our hopes up for a sequel to the beloved 1985 fantasy adventure film The Goonies. The movie became a cult hit, continuing to play in revival houses to this day, but a sequel always seemed like its own kind of fantasy, even when the cast reunited for the DVD release and started talking about plans.

That fizzled when reality set in about scheduling the likes of Josh Brolin and Sean Astin, not to mention cast members who have long since retired from acting.

But Chris Columbus, who wrote the script to the original Goonies, now says that he has received word that director Richard Donner might actually be re-assembling the cast. Columbus is currently directing Goonies cast member Joe Pantoliano (he played Francis Fratelli) in Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

"[Pantoliano] said that Richard Donner talked to him about six months ago about the sequel," Columbus said. "I think the only way it could be done is if the kids are now the parents, and their kids have become the Goonies. I still think the two brothers are still alive and well, so they could still be in the movie. So it's a matter of whether or not they could re-create that concept."

The Goonies centered on a group of kids who lived in the the Goon Docks together. They would play outside and go on adventures. The film chronicled their quest for the pirate treasure of One-Eyed Willie in the caves under their town. Perhaps the biggest hurdle for a Goonies 2 would be believing that modern kids would play outside.

"I don't know if that's possible anymore," Columbus said. "Maybe if all the parents in the new Goonie movie forbid their kids to play on the Internet, that's gotta be the plot. You can't go anywhere near a computer or cell phone. I guess the adventures are online."

Columbus added that he believes there's a new, younger fan base for the original movie that could bolster a sequel. "Most of the 20-year-olds or 23-year-olds I work with—particularly on Percy Jackson— they do have this love of the '80s, this obsession with the '80s, and they're really convinced that the '80s are this magical time," he said. "I guess part of it is what you're saying, that you could hang out and go on an adventure."

In the meantime, fans can re-watch the original Goonies and see the cast reunite for the upcoming 25th anniversary. For their part, Pantoliano and Columbus plan to celebrate it. "The first thing he said to me [was], 'You gonna go to the Goonies reunion?'" Columbus said. "I said, 'I didn't know there was one.' It's a year and a half from now, and they're getting everyone together, because I think it's the 25th anniversary of the film. I said, 'Yeah, I'd love to see everybody.'"

Hey, if that came true I could use the excuse of having to take the kids to the movies to go see it. I wonder if I would like it now, at almost 40.

By Mystok at 12:14 PM ON 06/29/09

Contrary to popular belief, kids do still play outside, but I can some up with a plot off the top of my head that not only involves video games and the Internet, but fantasy adventure like the original movie.

I hate this film. It's typical Steven Spielberg kid archetypes. The lead kid, who's smart, but not too smart (THAT would be nerdy) and who has a girlfriend. Everyone else is a sidekick. How about the racist understanding of the Japanese kid or how the fat kid can't stop eating out of greed (rather than showing that he's maybe lonely and eating to comfort himself).

These are terrible archetypes that only create more prejudice in our culture.

The only thing worse are that group of late '80s early '90s films like "The Wizard" and many others that had the leads who had mullets or longish hair, who always skateboarded, always got into mischief, and lived in the suburbs.

How about films with realistic kids!

Muldfeld - take a pill.. it's a film!

By treqqer1 at 1:50 PM ON 06/29/09

Dear God, are they kidding?
What possible reason could there be to make a sequel to what just might be the absolute WORST movie ever made?

This piece of dreck is syrupy, stupid, and pointless. If Spielberg isn't embarrassed by it he sure as hell should be!

By j-dub at 1:52 PM ON 06/29/09

@superfly

Gotta agree w/ ya there. a cameo in this film would just be terrible. Short Round has definitely got to be in this movie though, I couldn't care less for Sean Astin or Josh Brolin, just as long as Short Round is in it, it's all good.

By j-dub at 1:56 PM ON 06/29/09

@Muldfeld

The kid wasn't Japanese... He is Vietnamese... You're stereotyping the kid as Japanese is racist! So pipe down and keep accusations of racism to yourself.

Between reality shows and remakes, there is very little left in Hollywood that is original. Now sequels seem to be jumping on board. Unfortunately, it seems nostalgia pays.

Despite being of the original Goonies generation, I didn't care enough about the original to see a sequel.

What next? All of John Hughes movies get remakes? God forbid.

By AnthonyDe at 3:23 PM ON 06/29/09

No you would not do it with the Goonies' kids! It has to be about the original characters. They've lost touch and are "grown ups" then brought together again to rediscover what it means to be a Goonie.

By Rob at 6:17 PM ON 06/29/09

Muldfield, if we all wanted reality, we wouldn't go to the movies or watch TV (other than 'reality' shows, even though they aren't).

By fresnotimelord at 7:36 PM ON 06/29/09

Wohoooo! Now this Is a Sequel I would Love to See! It's too bad John Matuszak (sloth). and Anne Ramsey (Mama fratelli have Passed) it won't be the same without them.

Would be cool if they had all or some of the kids do cameos! Specially Jonathan Ke Quan, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Sean Astin, Jeff Cohen and Josh Brolin.

@ Mudfield Dude or Dudette..get a Life. Goonies was one of the most Popular films of the 80's.

And yeah. Data was Vietnamese.

This is one Sequel if Done Right, would be awesome!

By parrothead0333 at 8:12 PM ON 06/29/09

Well i could see the movie work a little like it did originally.

We could say that they invested the money from the jewels after paying off the bank and then 20 years later there they are losing it all to some ponzi scheme and are in danger of losing everything so the kids venture off to D.C. to ask for a bailout from the pirates known as our government.

Joking aside i would love to see a sequel if its well written and maybe searching for the secret island hideaway of Willy and his gang would be the most likely scenario in my opinion.

By Andrew at 9:11 PM ON 06/29/09

Wow, I don't get all the hate for this movie. This was one of my most watched movies from my childhood. I watched it again a few years back and it holds up well. Lots of excitement, humor, and cool gadgets. I'll be sharing it with my kids when they get a little older.

By a different tim at 9:50 PM ON 06/29/09

I wish they would stop teasing us with this and actually make the damn thing already! It would be super sweet if everyone from the original cast and crew could be involved, well the living ones, I would totally see it!

By paul at 10:38 PM ON 06/29/09

I would like to watch the sequel. This movie brings back good memories.

Loved this movie as a kid, it was magic to me then. Still love it today, even though I clearly see it's many faults. But who cares about them, this is about good old movie magic and heart, which this movie had in spades. I almost pity people who have to put down on all the flaws of the movie, etc. If you don't like it, fine, but let those of us who is capable of liking, or, God forbid, even LOVE a movie without analyzing it to death, enjoy it in peace, and take your hate elsewhere. Please?
Watched it recently with our daughter, who's 13, and she loved it, too. :) I for one would love to see a well-made sequel

By Barry at 12:42 PM ON 07/01/09

Think of the premise to the Stephen King book/movie "IT". It's about a group of kids that have an adventure when they're young, then years later when they're adults the creature comes back and they have to band together again. What you should see with a Goonies sequel would be a similar premise (minus the evil Tim Curry clown, of course). It could work.

Plus, any chance to see a grown-up Kerri Green again ;)

By Kay at 2:02 PM ON 07/01/09

What is with you Goonies haters?! This is one of my favorite childhood movies. I will always have love for this movie.

By firefly at 2:50 PM ON 07/01/09

worst film of all time? Spielberg embarrassed by this? Are we really talking about the same movie here? If you hated this movie that much then you are either too young to remember it or you have something missing inside of you...So let met get this straight, you didn't like the movie because it had a formula that 99% of all movies have: the lead character was clever, but not a genius (don't want to make him a nerd after all!).....Excuse me while i go laugh at the stupidity of this statement....ok, back. So the lead character is your average joe, except that he's a little more brave and clever in dire situations, hmmm, yea, def not realistic, i could never see myself or anybody i know to fit that character model....be much more realistic for the kid who aces chemistry to be the leader of the group, and have a gf. Ya know i had a roommate in college who was decent at chem, but more importantly, kept to his books most of the time. He was also insane, violent, and grabbed a girls ponytail one time to 'see if it was a double or single', but yea, i could see a younger version of him as the lead character. The goonies was an 80's classic and great childhood memory, to call it a terrible film, well you're gonna make me truffle shuffle.

By PendletonThe3rd at 5:13 PM ON 07/03/09

This is terrific news.

While I worry that they would mess up a sequel, how can you not be excited by it and hope for the best?

This movie is still one of my favorites as it holds up extremely well to this day, unlike some other 80's movies. Probably because it didn't rely on any major special effects. Instead, it relied on heart. And the sense of adventure, exploration, and mystery that most kids aspire for.

I really do hope they pull it. The timing is right.

After all, those who were kids when it came out, like myself, probably have kids now themselves. And want their children to experience the same sense of wonder with a potential sequel that they did with the original. I would love this for my son.

And if the sequel doesn't hold up to the memory of the original...so what. We will always HAVE the original to treasure. That can't be compromised.

So on Donner, on Columbus, on Spielberg and Goonies cast. Get it done! So many lesser movies have been remade or turned into sequel that it's shocking this hasn't been done yet.

Fingers crossed.

PS-I am surprised as well by the many haters. Goonies were talking about right? Goonies! There is nothing to hate in this movie.

By Dee at 4:33 PM ON 07/07/09

Well, the Troys of this world would hate the Goonies movie. So I suppose we shouldn't be surprised at that.

I'm a hard-core Goonie fan, and while I'd like to see a sequel in some ways, I worry more about it tainting our view of that world. The way most sequels have gone lately, I'd say leave a remake behind. The story would have to be phenomenal, and I just don't know if we have those kinds of stories being told these days.

I'm hoping if they do decide to do it, that they take their time and give us a really good story. And as for Columbus' technology comment, ever heard of geocaching? There's a number of ways to get them outside. I don't know why the kids of the Goonies necessarily have to be involved anyway. Maybe they can be in town for a high school reunion and the Fratelli bro causes trouble, etc.

Anyways, nothing but love for the Goonies. (I still wish they'd done a cartoon--that has less potential for sucking).

By maui mistisa at 4:04 PM ON 07/15/09

If they can have a movie of an again "Journey to the Center of the earth" and "Harry Potter", why not another Goonies movie. Keep the imagination going. Old school rules.

By Sloth at 3:18 AM ON 07/27/09
