Wolverine defeats Spider-Man to appear on the greatest Marvel cover of all time

Wolverine defeats Spider-Man to appear on the greatest Marvel cover of all time

Marvel Comics asked fans to pick the top 70 Marvel Comics covers of all time earlier this year as part of its celebration of the company's 70th anniversary, and as the results have been slowly released over the past month, we've anxiously awaited word on which cover would be crowned the best of the best.

This week, the winning artwork was finally announced—the cover to 1988's The Incredible Hulk #340, which focuses more on the Wolverine than on the Hulk, who can only be seen as a reflection in the X-Man's adamantium claws.

Amazing Fantasy #15, which introduced the Spider-Man way back in 1962, came in second:

But don't feel too bad for the wall crawler—of the 70 covers which made the final list, Spidey appeared on a whopping 19 of them! Captain America was featured on 16, while the Wolverine was drawn on a dozen of what Marvel fans considered the company's best covers.

I wonder if that will make Hulk 340 to go up in price. I actually own a copy of it.

Cool. I have quite a few of those. Amazing how many Secret Wars are in there.

Is that by Todd McFarlane? The guy deserves note for innovating how Spiderman was drawn, but his exaggerated technique was annoying -- especially the big thumbs and overly curved postures. I much preferred Jim Lee, even if all his characters essentially had the same faces, especially the women, but my pre-teen and teen self remembers them being gorgeous women.

Anyway, McFarlane was also a terrible storyteller from what I remember from the issues of "Spider-Man" he wrote with a childish propensity for violence. Heck, all those "Image" artists were about style over substance, if I remember.

Amazing! I actually have that one. I got it right after it came out (originally).

I was actually hoping Wolverine #1 from 1982 would be the number 1 cover. But I'm happy with this.

Eh, can't really get with the choice of winners. I like the more realistic/modern covers much better than the classics.

I also got a bit of a laugh when I tried to download a couple (like the one of Storm playing with lightning... hot!) for wallpaper fodder. They told me I didn't have permission :( So, I just hit my little Javascript disable button and downloaded it anyway. I will never understand the idea that folks want to put an image on the internet but try to keep people from downloading it? Hell, if I were a little less lazy I could just screenshot it and crop out the rest. Oh well.

I like most of those. Except #11. Never was much of a Jim Lee fan.
I'm surprised no John Byrne "Alpha Flight" covers made the list. Some of those are pretty good.

It's good to see that it's a healthy mix of covers from much of Marvel's history, rather than just a couple of classics (like Amazing Fantasy #15) and a bunch of new stuff in the last few years.

I can't believe they even allowed any of those pathetic 'Ultimate' titles to be included. That line's demise has been years overdue.

i just irritated me that they didnt have any Conan cover to vote for. those are still some of the best covers marvel had.
