Writer reveals \<i\>Green Lantern\<\/i\> movie\'s progress and a few hints

Screenwriter Marc Guggenheim told SCI FI Wire exclusively that he has just completed a new draft of a proposed live-action Green Lantern movie, based on a script by him, Michael Green and Greg Berlanti.

"In fact, I'm ... delivering another draft today," Guggenheim (TV's Flash Forward) said in an exclusive interview on Friday. "So it continues to move forward."

The film is expected to be directed by Martin Campbell, who stepped in for Berlanti, and is slated to begin production at Australia's Fox Studios in Sydney this summer for a release on June 17, 2011.

Guggenheim confirmed that his script will focus on Hal Jordan, based on the Silver Age DC Comics incarnation of the superhero, and how he became a member of the Green Lantern Corps.

Beyond that, Guggenheim remained tight-lipped. "You know I really can't [say anything]," he said. "I've sworn a blood oath of secrecy in relation to the project. But, you know, the thing I can tell you is that it is a very loving and respectful approach."

Guggenheim added: "The goal here is to do the best cinematic representation of the Green Lantern character. You know, there's no desire on anyone's part to completely change the character and just call this other character Green Lantern and try to ... draft off the name recognition. This is all about 'How do we bring the best version of this character to the silver screen?'"

As for the movie's source material, Guggenheim said, "We've drawn heavily from ... a lot of different sources in terms of the comic books. ... The character ... is several decades old, so ... we've really had an incredible amount of source material to cherry-pick from."

As for casting of the iconic character, rumors have centered on such of-the-moment actors as The Hangover's Bradley Cooper and Star Trek's Chris Pine. None are true, Guggenheim said.

"They're all false," he said. "I mean, they're all false insofar as we haven't chosen anyone yet. They're still in the negotiations, you know? There's a lot of names being talked about, and there's a lot of people being met, and a lot of ... actors reading the script. But if you read online [that] Pauly Shore's been cast as Hal Jordan, I can guarantee you we have not cast anyone." That last rumor was a joke. We think.

As for the process, Guggenheim said, "It remains a lot of fun. It's such a great character, it's been a really great project so far."

Love GL! I can't wait to see this when it comes out!

By Patrick E at 9:11 AM ON 06/15/09

I've been eagerly awaiting a full-on Green Lantern movie ever since Geoff Johns brought Hal Jordan back to the Corps in Green Lantern: Rebirth. The GL story he's been telling since then has been one of the best things in comics for the last few years. If the movie's even half as good as the current GL comics, we're in for a treat.

How about Nathan Fillian for Hal Jordan? Even without a brown coat, he'd rock!

By Patrick E at 10:06 AM ON 06/15/09

The only problem with Nathan Fillion as Hal is that he's a bit old for the part now. Nathan's 38, and while he certainly looks to be aging well, I think the producers are looking for someone more like 28. I think if they'd made this movie 5 years ago Nathan would've been the perfect choice(him or Ben Browder). That being said, if they do cast him I wouldn't exactly be disappointed. :)

By maryjanesuncle at 10:33 AM ON 06/15/09

love Hal Jordan, hope for a good actor,Nathan would be good so would the guy from supernatural, Dean

By mikymik38 at 12:29 PM ON 06/15/09

Hal Jordan can't be 28 he's a retired test pilot so he's got to be older, Chris Pine is definately not a match for this character, although I think he's awesome as a young Kirk

By Callie at 1:05 PM ON 06/15/09

I say either Nathan Fillion or Brian Austin Green.... Both would be great I think.

By Shaun at 1:24 PM ON 06/15/09

from the 30 to 40-something actors already mentioned, i would go with ben browder. he definitely has the talent and the charisma for the part. but if the producers decide to go younger, i think chris pine would be a good choice.

By Chayne Lightning at 7:43 PM ON 06/15/09

Hal, at the point this movie appears to be taking place would not be a "retired" test pilot - its the origin movie - So I would say expect him to be late 20's to early 30's...

I don't know why, but while I love Ben Browder's work, i see him more as a Guy Gardner - *hint hint Mr. G*

By wadoko at 12:49 AM ON 06/16/09

no more superhero in gay spandex tights adaptation, please. FAIL.

By Handa at 10:06 AM ON 06/16/09

i thought the first rumours for hal jordon was the idea of Ryan Gosling. i actually liked that idea, he just turned 28 i think, nominated for an oscar from halk nelson, strong actor, likes the challenge of different roles, he could pull it off well... he's come a long way since his breaker high days

By NoleLantern at 10:34 AM ON 06/16/09

All this anticipation better be worth the wait! Go GL!

By z00m at 11:50 AM ON 06/16/09

josh duhamel for hal jordan would be ok...

By Hal's #1 Fan! at 12:00 PM ON 06/16/09

I think Gerard Butler would make an Awesome Hal Jordan! He's Tough, he's built (300), he can play a wise ass like he did in Tomb Raider, and i think he'd be perfect for the man with no fear!! On a side note the ONLY person who should play Sinestro is Daniel Day Lewis, his role in "No country for old men" sold me on it, his look with the mustache and his acting abilities would make him PERFECT for Sinestro!.... My choice for Hal's Love interest Carol Ferris (who eventually becomes Star Sapphire) has to be Kate Beckinsale she'd be perfect for the role.

In terms of sequels depending on where they go with the films i'd like to see Bradley Cooper come on as Guy Gardner with Jaime Foxx playing John Stewart..and finally Jake Gyllenhal for Kyle Rayner. A fight between these three and Hal (as parallex) would be incredible. they could also do spin offs with Gyllenhall and Cooper and make a Green Lantern Corps Series, and then either throw Foxx or Butler in the Justice League, or hell BOTH!
In terms of the rest of the cast, i'd love Patrick Stewart to be the voice of Ganthet the leader of the guardians, but if he cant then maybe Chris Lee. Drill Instructor Kilowog should be Dennis Haysbert no question while Lantern Boodika should be non other than Helena Bonam Carter. If they wanted to bring in Soranik Natu as a love interest for Kyle and play the part of Sinestros daughter i'd like to see a hottie like Roselyn Sanchez take that role. so my casting of the GL universe would be as follows
Hal Jordan - Gerard Butler
Sinestro - Daniel Day Lewis
Carol Ferris - Kate Beckinsale
Abin Sur - Doug Jones
Ganthet - Patrick Stewart
Salakk - David Hyde Pierce
Boodikka - Helena Bonham Carter
Kilowog - Dennis Haysbert
Guy Gardner - Bradley Cooper
John Stewart - Jaime Foxx
Kyle Rayner - Jake Gyllenhal
Soranik Natu - Roselyn Sanchez
Mongul - (CGI) voiced by Eric Roberts
Black Hand - Crispen Glover

By Boomer at 12:22 PM ON 06/16/09

I'd like to see Logan Bartholomew as Hal Jordan. He is young fresh and an excellent actor. Watch hallmarks 'Love promise series'.

By Nels at 5:58 PM ON 06/16/09

Daniel Day Lewis wasn't in No Country for Old Men.

By DayLewisFan1 at 6:15 PM ON 06/16/09

Not sure who the HalFan is, but perhaps before he comments of the fabulous Job Daniel Day Lewis does in the movies, he might want to know what movies he was in. What a putz.

By Techraan at 7:30 PM ON 06/16/09

James Marsden would make an excellent Hal Jordon. He looks just like the young one. Also, Hal doesn't HAVE to be a retired test pilot. he could be a current one. they can choose from any story line they want since silver age. Martin Campbell is great. I'm excited!

By Parallelalax at 10:11 PM ON 06/16/09

Don't be too hard on Halfan#1, he/she seems like he/she meant to say and was thinking 'There will be blood'.

By Hal's #1 Fan at 3:20 PM ON 06/17/09

Thank you Parallelalax i was in fact thinking of "There Will Be Blood" i'm at working and while i was typing my boss walked in so i panicked and wrote the wrong title since they both came out around the same time. But daylewisfan you have to admit wouldn't he be amazing as Sinestro?? What do you guys think of my other choices?

By Lt. Greywand at 7:33 PM ON 06/17/09

What about Scott Porter from Friday Night Lights? He's not paralyzed in real life.

By jpack at 10:23 PM ON 06/17/09

woah woah woah. GL movie isint coming out in Christmas time 2010?!?!?

By kslay at 12:01 AM ON 06/18/09

im pumped for this an i am praying they do this right.

By Steven at 9:54 AM ON 06/18/09

Yeah right. I'll believe there will be a GL Movie when i see an official trailer for it. They did the same thing with Wonder Woman, Flash and recently Shazam. Warner Bros. made it sound like they were so far into production that the films sounded like they were going to be made. Then like a bunch of pansies, they backed out because they weren't sure about the direction of the films. Hell Shazam had already signed Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to play Black Adam, yet they still backed out.

So all im saying is, I'll believe it when i see a trailer. Until then, the only two film franchises the WB has balls to make is Superman and Batman in my mind. And since the disaster that was Superman Returns, it looks like its just Batman.

By Oscar Wao at 12:37 PM ON 06/18/09

I think Vincent Price is the only one that should play Sinestro and furthermore I ... oh wait, he's passed on. Damn! Well, maybe they can Superimpose his face on an actor (Andy Serkis) like they did with Arnuuld on TSalvation. Nah, it would suck. Alright I'll get to yaw on Sinestro. As far as Hal Jordan/The Green Lantern, how about Tom Cruise? He still looks young and he already knows how to fly jets (Top Gun). Besides he needs a Superhero role in his resume ala Robert Downey Jr.

By Peter at 4:45 PM ON 06/19/09

First things first:
I love comics.Dc comics, Dark Horse, Marvel, you name it.
Having said that (and from a guy that reads 70 comics per month.Yes, i am that "addicted"), my favorite character as always been GL. Here's someone with all the possible human flaws, with a weapon that functions on will power. The possibilities to work with this type of hero are infinite (by the way Geoff Johns, keep up the good work).
I'm a bit fed up with all the superheroes movies of the past years (ok, with the exception of the "Dark Knight", but that Joker, man...Even that voice sounded like the one i always imagined when i read the comics).
So, loving the GL comic so much, i think i'll pass on this one. I don't want to find out that the studios served me another dose of "x-men origins:wolverine", or ghost rider for that matter, or...you get the picture.

By Nave TORMENT Hayder at 3:07 PM ON 06/22/09

GL is AWESOME. I REALLY want to see this movie being MADE PROPERLY. Though unsure about the director and people working behind it... of course, i gotta give em the benefit of DOUBT. Lets just hope it isn't another mindless superhero action movie :| as for GL....there's SO MUCH TO WRITE ON! I'm currently working on a short story (unoffcially) based on hte character myself for my creative writing research. this guy, Jordan, has got MORE DEPTH THAN any o the Transformer bots. Sorry, but that's the truth. I wonder if they'll nod to THE GREEN LANTERN THEORY in there somewhere?

By Timelord76 at 1:35 AM ON 06/25/09

Green lantern ROCKS!! It's about time they did a GL movie. I definitely agree that Nathan Fillion is PERFECT for the role of Hal Jordan. I just hope they don't go spandex, but instead go with a Batman-like armor instead. That would work really well.

By crebain at 4:26 PM ON 06/25/09

Daniel Day Lewis would be a great Sinestro...or maybe Hugh Laurie or Jeremy Irons.

Jason O'Mara as Hal Jordan?

By JLU Leaguer at 11:00 AM ON 07/02/09

I have two choices of people to play GL . Adam Baldwin, He really sounded like a great Hal Jordan on JLU animated series. my 2nd choice would be Sam Worthington.

By shieldwolf10 at 4:42 PM ON 07/05/09

I have read GL since I was 10 and I believe Nathan Fillion has the range, looks, talent to be the best actor for this role. I don't think making Hal Jordon a twenty some year old will work. You don't become one of the best test pilots with the needed hours and experience when you are still in your twenties..

By James Anderson Merritt at 8:03 AM ON 07/09/09

Chuck Yeager was 24 when he first broke the sound barrier, and only 30 when he again achieved the aircraft speed record. By the time he was 40, in 1963, his career as a test pilot shooting for speed records was ended by an accident.

So, it is entirely possible and credible that Hal Jordan, a seasoned test pilot, could be in his mid-to-late-30s, and within age-range of an actor like Fillion. But it is also believable that the role could go to someone in his late 20s or early 30s. I have yet to see anyone younger who could wear the ring as well as Fillion, though. I agree that James Marsden looks amazingly like the Hal Jordan of the Silver Age comic books. But I haven't enjoyed his acting as much as I have Fillion's, and Wikipedia says that Marsden is 36. Not much difference.

I think Fillion is the guy to beat, and if he isn't cast as Jordan, then the guy who gets the role will have a lot to prove.

By AlanScott at 10:24 PM ON 08/05/09

My concern is, this will be like all the recent Superhero shows and movies (Batman Begins, Ironman, I'm looking at you). Most of the movie will be spent on the back story, and, the origin, and not enough time spent on the action. If they can avoid this, there are myriad story possibilities, and (crossing my fingers) this could be great. However, this being the 21st century, I'm not holding my breath.

By sonny sayno at 3:49 PM ON 09/18/09

I believe Logan Bartholomew would be perfect as Hal Jordan - he's a great actor, young (25), talented, versatile and very handsome! He also reminds me of Christopher Reeves. Logan Bartholomew will definitely capture your heart!

By Knight22179 at 2:05 PM ON 11/10/09

They casted Robert Downing Junior as Iron Man, a 40 something year old actor, in an ORIGINS movie for crying out loud. An actor that was WAY to old for the part (in my opinion) for an origins movie. So Fillion could do the movie if they casted him. If Robert can for Iron Man, Fillion can. However, Fillion is not my choice. Only two actors can do Hal Jordan in my mind and that's Chris Cline from Star Trek or James Marsden from X-Men. Both look the part to a capital T!

Reynols from the recent Wolverine movie flop is definately the WRONG choice. Oh and the reason why the Wonder Woman movie project failed is because no actress could be found for the part. Which is a bunch of BULL. Catherine Zeta Jones would have been PERFECT for the role if they had nabbed her after she did the Mask of Zorro, while she was still young. Now she's too old, being 40. Megan Fox would be perfect for the role now. People say she's not a good actor, but that's false, she's perfectly fine. And how does one get better at acting? By starring in more movies. She'd definately need to work out, though, to get that body to have some muscle on it to be more Amazon like. And she ain't too young either, not for an origins movie. Then Catherine Zeta Jones can play Hippolyta, her Mom. :)
