Ed Solomon, writer of the upcoming fantasy film Imagine That, said that his next project, Tokyo Suckerpunch, should be the vehicle that liberates star Tobey Maguire from his association with Spider-Man.
"I believe that for Tobey it's the perfect thing to go beyond that," Solomon said in a group interview Saturday in Beverly Hills, Calif. "It's a romantic comedy—it's got a lot of action, but it's mostly comedy set in Tokyo, about a guy who thinks he's in love with one woman."
In addition to Imagine That, Solomon's previous credits include Men in Black and Charlie's Angels. He said that Tokyo Suckerpunch, based on the novel by Isaac Adamson, follows a comic-book writer who is obsessed with the fantasy life he leads in his own graphic novels.
"He's a graphic novelist who lives in Cleveland and writes a graphic novel about himself that he sets in Tokyo," Solomon said. "He has a certain fantasia of what Japan is and has a certain fantasia of what a real woman is. Neither exists in reality, but he goes off to Tokyo in pursuit of this fantasy woman."
Solomon added that the story veers away from comic-book fantasy to provide the character with a realistic romance, "and he ends up in this adventure not dissimilar to the kinds of things he writes about," Solomon continued. "He goes there with his editor, to be played by Anne Hathaway, and ends up it's a love story about him and Anne Hathaway, basically, and it's really about a guy figuring out what matters to him."

Too bad he already singed on for Spidey 4 and 5 which will be keeping him busy for the next few years. No way he would have time to do this film now.

Way to murder a great story, screenwriter dude. It was so much more awesome, though more fantastical, when he was a reporter for Youth In Asia magazine... This is the kind of stuff that Terry Gilliam would nail as a director... this retelling sounds like shite... but what do I know... I read books... I am not a hollywood screenwriter

Why the hell would you pay to adapt a really good novel if you're going to completely change the damn story?

I love that playing a writer of comic books will liberate him from his association with Spider-Man, a comic book character he plays.

tobey mcguire as billy chaka? i don't see it, nor do i know where he'll learn fluent japanese. i have a feeling everyone in the movie will be speaking perfect english in japan. i guess it doesn't matter since the story sounds absolutely ridiculous and nothing at all like the book.
