Check out the 11th Doctor in a new image

Check out the 11th \<i\>Doctor\<\/i\> in a new image
Karen Gillian is the new companion to the new Doctor, played by Matt Smith

Paging Doctor Who: Get a look at the 11th Doctor, played by Matt Smith, and his new companion, Amy Pond, played by Karen Gillian, as revealed on BBC earlier today. (The Daily Guardian has its own pirate images here.)

The new doc will wear what appears to be a tweed jacket, bow tie, rolled up trousers and black boots. More from the BBC:

Filming on the new episodes begins on Monday in Cardiff, with the new series going out in spring 2010.

Smith is taking over from David Tennant, whose last episodes will be shown at the end of the year.

"I feel very privileged and proud to be part of this iconic show," Smith said after arriving on set for his first day of filming. "The scripts are brilliant—I'm excited about the future and all the brilliant adventures I get to go on as the Doctor."

The new Doctor meets his new companion in the first episode of the new season of the show, which is now being run by lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat.

Look, I've been a huge Doctor Who fan for decades and love the new series. I'm keeping an open mind about Matt Smith, but the photos I saw today make me nervous because he and the new companion make it seem more like Twilight than Doctor Who. A teenager cannot pilot the TARDIS!

Again, open mind... open mind... Hey, I didn't like Donna at first and she turned out to have one of the greatest character arcs, so we'll see. I have confidence in Steven Moffat. I just wish the new Doctor didn't look like such a child!

By Octo at 10:40 PM ON 07/20/09

Have to agree, the Doc is way too young, even though the new sidekick is adorable. This was bound to happen when the marketers realized how popular the series is with teen girls. Might as well get prepared for Degrassi In Time.

By Melora at 10:46 PM ON 07/20/09

I want to keep an open mind about Dr Who, but I'm failing to do so. Matt Smith is far too young for such a weighty role and the series is becoming more and more juvenile as each year passes.

By Iso at 10:52 PM ON 07/20/09

I think the BBC's theory is if they make Dr Who more juvenile than it already is, then perhaps it will make Torchcrud look more mature in comparison.

Sadly, it won't work.

By Eldon at 11:44 PM ON 07/20/09

I have faith in Stephen Moffat to make a great series even greater. I love his Doctor Who stories and I really like his other work. You should take a look at Jekyll. It'll knock your socks off it's that good. I'm holding out to see what happens.

By PHOTOGUY_RYAN at 11:53 PM ON 07/20/09

Hey, its the teeny-bopper Doctor.

That, or the new Doctor is fairly hermaphroditic.

The bad guys of all the universes will only laugh at the young boy Doctor....

By iank at 12:06 AM ON 07/21/09

Ok, I've seen the interviews with smith and my opinion on this is exactly this... he has energy, his own style and now with photos, a seemingly unique style.. I look forward to this new doctor... I'm curious to see what he brings to the table... curiosity and entertainment... isn't this why we started watching in the first place?

By sligh at 12:14 AM ON 07/21/09

I have a question... the TARDIS looks like its from the Hartnell era and it looks brand spankin new. Could Smith be the first Doctor but just really young? Are we going to be watching a prequel?

By Juan at 1:16 AM ON 07/21/09

I am more than skeptical... I hope I am wrong. I would love to be wrong in thinking this bloke can't pull this off.

By Ed at 1:42 AM ON 07/21/09

He's only three years younger than peter davison was... give him a chance

By Bill at 2:02 AM ON 07/21/09

I like the whole retro feel to it with an older style TARDIS. Smith's outfit is very close in style to Pat Troughton except it's lighter colors.

By jesterjeff at 2:12 AM ON 07/21/09

has anyone notice how incarnations seem to get younger the closer we get to that final 13th incarnation. after that he' either pass on or have to go back to Gallafrey for a reset...
hells by the end he might just be a kid. lol.

By Moe3 at 2:28 AM ON 07/21/09

Yay, thanks, I'm psyched! I know that people are worried about Matt Smith being too young, but I'm not. It doesn't matter how old the actor is, the truth is the character is over 900 years old. It's why I could never accept the Doctor and Rose, regardless of the fact that when they recast they did it with David Tennant who wasn't that much older then Billie Piper. It doesn't matter how old the skin is, the truth is the Doctor is ancient, and that's that.

I'm really psyched about it. I can't wait to see Tennant's last episodes and I can't wait to see Smith's first! I've watched the Doctor since I was a child in repeats every day after school. One week it was Pertwee, the next it was Baker, the next it was Davidson. Later on it was Baker, etc. I loved them all. They each brought something new and unique to the Doctor and they were each wonderful in their own ways. I am sure Smith will do the same thing. And I'm betting there were the same fears when the Doctor changed as there are now. In fact, I remember the teeth knashing when Tennant took over, and look how that turned out!

Viva la Doctor Who!

By Tone at 5:03 AM ON 07/21/09

I saw these pictures yesterday and seeing them again today I still think he looks like a geography teacher from the fifties.
I am hoping that this costume is part of his transformation - a costume he wears while he finds his new self and then at the end of the episode he will end up in something suitable. If he does not end up in something fairly gothic and dark they ill seem to have missed a trick. The promo pictures they did when smith was first announced were better than this...
I know people will say - its only a costume - but it is a costume that becomes as Iconic for that generation as the next - I for one cannot look at a Cricket jumper and not think of Davidson or a multicoloured scarf and not think of Baker...
I can't see me looking a a dull tweed jacket and having the same thoughts...

By DrWhoWhatWhereWhenWhy at 8:52 AM ON 07/21/09

AngryJonny's post is spot on! I concur!

By baron_elric at 9:22 AM ON 07/21/09

Iso, BBC has canceled Torchwood, so you can relax. Children of Earth is pretty frakking awesome, if you want to give it a try.

BBC America, despite all the advertising about its HD service premiering last night, appears to have HD going out over, well, zero carriers in the US. As far as I know, the only people who saw Torchwood in HD on July 20 were those who had it from Britain that way.

By Lynette at 9:30 AM ON 07/21/09

I don't care for this new Flock of Seagull's hairstyled Doctor. The best pairing in my opinion is the 10th Doctor and Martha Jones. They have amazing chemistry together. I'll give it a shot, but I'm not hopeful.

By Beren at 10:34 AM ON 07/21/09

I'm a little skeptical about the youth of the actor, too--but for me it depends on whether or not he can pull off the character, who has always had that quality of seeming immensely old at times, no matter what he looks like, while still keeping that "childlike wonder" quality. If Smith can pull it off, more power to him, no matter how old he is.

By VJW at 10:48 AM ON 07/21/09

"The best pairing in my opinion is the 10th Doctor and Martha Jones."

That's so funny because she's my least favorite. In fact, I started watching series 3 again this week and she just annoys me. (I have all 4 seasons on DVD) In fact, the worst episodes of series 4 were the 3-episode arc with MJ, in my opinion.

I will always be partial to Rose, but Donna really had the fire and spark. I loved her!

I watched the first 2 episodes of Doctor Who when Sci-fi aired them, but didn't care for CE that much so I stopped watching. (I was pretty unfamiliar with the series so I wasn't comparing him to anyone previous) However, I really got into the series during a day-long DW series 2 marathon and fell in love with David Tennant and was convince he was the only Doctor for me. I still feel that way. However, once I bought series 1-4 on DVD and really started watching Christopher Eccleston, I really, really like his Doctor as well.

With this in mind, I'm willing to give Matt Smith the benefit of the doubt. I just hope the new series isn't so far way from 1-4 that it's unrecognizable. It might have been better for us to have a familiar companion along to help us adjust - much like they did with DT in series 2. Oh well.

Hopefully, we'll get to see it here in the states...SyFy, get with the program and bring back the Doctor!

By Nyarlathotep at 12:06 PM ON 07/21/09

cool so its gone from disney/action hero with eccleston to harry potter in space to twilight in space.

wow, makes the tom baker years look almost watchable. I'm terrified to give this a chance - but im even more terrified of the undermen that are the majority of its fans!!

By kryche at 12:07 PM ON 07/21/09

No worries about it airing here in the states. BBC America is waiting in the wings to pick it up if Syfy passes.

I'm nervous about this new Doctor. I didn't like David Tennant at first either though, but after a couple episodes I grew to appreciate and enjoy his doctor immensely. I hope I can say the same about this new Doctor.

By Lord Zedd at 12:11 PM ON 07/21/09

Wow, have any of you people that have mentioned the 5th doctor's actors name actually seen his episodes ?

...because it quite clearly says his name is PETER DAVISON.

*NOT* DAVIDSON. Its on the f'ing credits, not hard to miss you know. Stupidity at its finest, but then I guess you are dr who fans...

Lynette: "I don't care for this new Flock of Seagull's hairstyled Doctor."

LOL! Best comment I've heard yet! You nailed what had been irking me about the new Doctor's hair; I just hadn't connected it with Flock of Seagulls. There's one photo from the beach shoot where I hope to God it's the wind blowing his hair because it seems like he may be sporting a Kate Gosselin reverse mullet.

Lord Zedd:

You feel better now, having righted this immense universal wrong? I promise to tell all I encounter of the glorious day when the almighty Lord Zedd corrected the TWO people who dared to add a "D" to the middle of Peter Davison's name. Here, in fact, I'm telling all about Lord Zedd's magnificence on Facebook right now!

Oops, I spelled it Z-E-D. The irony, huh?

You do all remember that Dr. Who started as a children's show, right? It was originally more along the lines of The Sarah Jane Adventures (which is quite fun, btw). I would think that you'd all be a bit more satisfied that it has grown so much over the years rather than still being a show for pre-teens.

Making him Goth would be the wrong way to go, that would certainly make it more "Twilightish". The science-teacher-geek look works well for him and takes his style way far away from Twilight. I'm really looking forward to seeing what he does with his character.

@baron_elric: where did you hear that Torchwood was canceled? If you have proof of that statement, let's see it. I have not been able to find that info anywhere.

By TFan at 4:08 PM ON 07/21/09

I'm so tired of all you so-called "fans" writing these negative comments about your so-called favorite shows/movies, before knowing anything at all about them! First it was the Daniel Craig Bond backlash now Dr. Who. - keeping an open mind means not having an opinion - good or bad - until you actually have something to base it on! You can't judge something - anything - simply from a photo! Who says Dr. Who can't be in his 20's? He's been almost every other age from his 30's on to his 60's! The same is being said right nor about 'SGU's' younger cast and the only footage out there is a trailer! How about keeping your damn personal opinions to yourselves and actually write something constructive for a change? Guess that'd be too much to ask for from Internet bloggers.

By I am Iron Fan at 6:22 PM ON 07/21/09

Time will tell, Who followers, time will tell.
Give it a chance, though.

By AngryJonny at 6:31 PM ON 07/21/09

TFan: "...keeping an open mind means not having an opinion..."

I think that's a wholly inaccurate statement. Not keeping an open mind would be if someone said nothing is going to change their negative opinion of Matt Smith as the Doctor, no matter how good he turned out to be, and no one has written that here.

Just the opposite, everyone here seems quite eager to see how Matt Smith does. I get the impression no one wants to seem him fail, but it would be dishonest for us to say the photos don't make us nervous. There's nothing wrong with that.

So, why not keep YOUR opinions to yourself about what people write? See how it's a bit hypocritical?

Also, Lexapro or Cymbalta; from what I understand, either would help take the edge off for you.

By Wofltech at 7:35 PM ON 07/21/09

@iso and baron_elric

Sorry, Torchwood will be back and it looks to start filming mid 2010. The numbers are too big for BBC not to give it another run. RTD says he has the 4th 'ready to go' and Eve Myles even mentioned that in the 4th series she will have a baby...

Besides, a lot of us LIKE Torchwood. And I am not sure about the new Doctor though. Tom Baker is my favorite, but David Tennant is a close second. I will give it a chance as long as the don't bring back that harpy Donna (Bring back Rose Tyler though!)

By gallifrey2008 at 10:32 AM ON 07/22/09

I completely agree with what most of you are saying. The new doctor is to young. I hope he is still great but the problem is when he says "I'm the doctor" people will think how is a 16 year old a doctor. At least David Tennet was old enough for it to be believable but yet not to old. The new guy is just does not look old enough to be taken seriously.

By TFan at 3:23 PM ON 07/22/09

Um . . .to Angry Johnny . . . what you said makes no sense. Obviously, you haven't read the posts - specifically those at the top of the page which say they're keeping an open mind, yet talking about how they aren't going to like - or worse yet possibly not going to like - the new doctor. If you actually read my post - I'm quite optomistic, but not forming any sort of opinin until I actually watch the series. Why would a photo of the actor - out of character mind you - on the set make anyone nervous?

You need to know what you're talking about before you post.

I'm a "new" fan of the show, being here only since the (latest) first season, but what I've come to enjoy about the series is the many trials the doctor faces. Yes, David Tennant was a great Doctor and my favorite episodes range from the times his expression lights up with joy to the times when he looks coldly as he does what he must.

I've not grown familiar with the "new" doctor to come, however, as long as he can portray the doctor with respect to what has preceded him, I'll gladly continue following the series.

If not, well... I'll just hold off until his first few episodes to see how a new face lends itself to this scifi fave.

By Sam at 4:08 PM ON 07/22/09

I'm here in the former US and have yet to see any Dr Who ep in HD. I like the look of the new companion, but the doctor makes me think of the first time Jack Harkness came along.

I would have liked the character if not for the constant reminder that he hits on anyTHING that crosses his path and after Torchwood came along he became even worse.

Doctor Who is best when he lives for the adventure, not when he looks like he's dolling himself up for a date.

I hope to like the new doctor.

If he disappoints, the vids for past seasons will have to do from now on.

By scifi-ED at 5:14 PM ON 07/22/09

Um, it is impossible to not have an opinion, unless you're an air head.

Keeping an open mind means, despite you're opinion you'll give it a try hoping your fears or doubts will not be correct. Which is what just about everyone has been saying.

I for one, will miss DT. And looking back, I wish CE had at least one more season, although I liked how the season ended.

As for the new Doctor, isn't him changing something that should excite us. Each change we learn something new about the Doctor. My only concern is, I don't think I want to see them be romantically involved, not yet anyway. That's why Rose is on a parallel Earth, cause they couldn't keep up that romance.

The new companion looks good, but I hope her family isn't annoying. Donna's mother annoyed the hell out of me. And Martha's whole family got on my nerves.

And lastly I think there is no way they have spent this much time on break, only to come back with a doctor that is no good, so I think this new season will be great.

By Al at 5:32 PM ON 07/22/09

What Ed said. :-)

By TFan at 6:09 PM ON 07/22/09

Okay . . . nobody seems to understand what keeping an open mind is all about . . .it's about reserving your opininon until you have something to judge a VALID opinion on. Of course everyone has an opinion. Sorry to inflame everyone so badly, I'm just tired of reading posts based on no real information other than just personal opinion (based on photos or rumors, or what have you, nothing solid), but that's my hang up, not your guys'. Everyone is free to think waht they want obviously. Last I'll say on the subject. Go Dr. Who!

By SiD at 7:51 AM ON 07/23/09

Colour me worried but reserving judgement... I have great faith in The Moff, but I share many of the concerns.

The costume looks like they were going for a juxtaposition of the young face with distinctly old-man clothes. I don't think I like it, on first sight, but we'll see whether it grows on me. I just wish it didn't keep making me think of the Peter Cushing movies... that's generally not a good thing!

By jolinar at 10:41 PM ON 07/23/09

When the producers of Doctor Who were deciding who the new Doctor was going to be sometime last year, I believe the producers were thinking about changing the Doctor's race or sex. For instance they wanted to either make him a black man or change him into a woman. Personally, I would've gone with the latter; you know shake things up a bit; & it'll be fun having a female Doctor. Whoo!!! Maybe they'll do that after this guy.

By TVDIVA at 2:00 PM ON 07/25/09

Even though these new main characters make it look like Doctor Who 90210, I am going to give the new series a chance. We can always turn it off after the first episode. But honestly, I always enjoyed Doctor Who morphing into an adult wise beyond his years - not a teenager.

By Doctor Who Knows at 1:25 AM ON 07/26/09

I'm disappointed here.. I don't have BBC.. is "SyFy".. going to air the 5th season? Usually they play them during the summer.. on their Summer of Sci-FI.. but i've not heard anything if its coming back.

By Iccengi at 11:20 PM ON 07/31/09

Please people He's only 3 years younger than DT. And at any rate if you think he's young check out his new companion who looks barely old enough to hold her own license. It's a little silly too say "oooohhh he's to young! but the girl's pretty..." kinda double-standardish don't you think?
At any rate I think it's smart to make him younger and of course I harbor this secret hope that MS will end up staying on for several years, maybe even gradually "aging" the Doctor. As the BBC goes through reincarnations faster than underwear at this point that really WOULD be a novel concept! Not to mention that as the only way to hit the Doctor's "reset' button involves killing other people it might be better to fully use the remaining actors and stretch out the episodes....
At any rate here's to hoping he's "Fantastic"!

By fan at 11:42 AM ON 08/08/09

How could any real fan of Doctor Who be so close-minded? Give them a chance.

By BobbyShaddoe at 12:36 AM ON 08/17/09

the only thing I don't like is the outfit on Matt Smith, it makes him look like Jimmy Olsen from the oldschool Superman comic books.

I think that Savid Tennant was an amazing doctor, the best by far and that Smith may be just as good. But in his own way.
