Thanks to his producing partner and friend Quentin Tarantino, actor-director Eli Roth is currently taking on the biggest acting challenge of his career with a role opposite Brad Pitt in Tarantino's World War II epic Inglourious Basterds.

But Roth told SCI FI Wire that he has equally epic ambitions for his next foray behind the cameras. "I'm finishing my script for Endangered Species, which I'm very, very excited about," Roth said in an exclusive telephone interview Wednesday. "I saw Transformers and Cloverfield, and I want to do a movie like that. I want to do my version of a PG-13 action/sci-fi/mass-destruction film, my way, with my ideas."

Roth's previous directorial efforts include Cabin Fever and the Hostel films. He said that he was looking forward to tackling a completely different kind of movie, much less one that's not R-rated. "Directorially, I'm really excited about doing a PG-13 action/sci-fi movie like Jurassic Park—something big with lots of chaos and lots of destruction," he explained, admitting it may only whet his appetite for more bloodletting. "And then, by the time I'm done with that, I'll be like, 'OK, enough of the PG-13.' I'll be hungry for gore."

Roth added: "I feel like I've done three very violent movies in a row. Especially with Hostel [Part II], where I think I pushed as much violence as you could on screen as the MPAA would allow. But since I've done that, and if I do violence again, I want to be really excited to do it. So it's [going to be] PG-13, but you've just got to go with your instinct and go with your gut and do what you're most into, and that's what I'm most into right now."

Ironically, Roth insists that the project was undertaken in the same way as those earlier films. "The way I would look at horror movies and go, 'OK, I want to do my version of a horror movie. if I was going to make a horror movie, this is how I would,'" he said. "I love these other films, but this is my take on the genre, and that's exactly what I'm focusing on now."

That said, Roth confessed that he has a number of horror-themed projects lined up in the near future, even if he isn't necessarily going to direct all of them. "I still have other horror movies in mind, but there are other genres that I'm dying to explore," he said. "I mean, I'd love to do Thanksgiving as well; I love horror movies, and I just produced a fantastic movie called Cotton that's editing right now. Now me and my partner are going to be producing a remake of Funhouse, which we think is going to be really, really fun and totally bloody and incredibly violent. But even if I'm not directing, I'll always have some horror movie going; that's my first love."
