First look: Johansson in Iron Man 2

The new issue of Entertainment Weekly will give us an initial peek at Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff, Marvels Comics' iconic and butt-kicking femme fatale known as the Black Widow, in Jon Favreau's upcoming Iron Man 2.

Romanoff, originally portrayed in the comics as a Soviet-trained superspy in a Mrs. Peel-style skintight outfit and carrying an array of Bond-like gear, has over the years been part of the superhero team the Avengers, an agent working with S.H.I.E.L.D., referred to as Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division in the first Iron Man movie, and a love interest for Daredevil.

Johansson will be joining returning stars Robert Downey Jr., as industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man, and Gwyneth Paltrow, as Stark's assistant, Pepper Potts. Don Cheadle will be taking over the role of Col. James "Rhodey" Rhodes from Terrence Howard. Mickey Rourke, fresh off his comeback role in Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler, will appear as villain Whiplash.

The inclusion of the Black Widow character, along with the cameo by Samuel L. Jackson as S.H.I.E.L.D. chief Nick Fury at the end of the first Iron Man movie and Downey's cameo at the end of The Incredible Hulk, lays more foundation for the announced Avengers movie, now reported to be scripted by X-Men sequels writer Zack Penn and scheduled for release in 2012.

Iron Man 2 hits theaters May 7, 2010.

I was skeptical about the casting of Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow at first, but I definitely like these first images of her in costume. At least, visually, she looks the part.

Avengers movie is being written by the guy who penned the steaming pile of crap X-Men 3?! WTF, whyyyyyy!!!

She doesn't look right. Pitty about Emily Blunt...

She looks more than right, she looks steamy hot. Plus, she knows how to act. Emily Blunt just looks confused to me. Not exactly superhero material. But, then again, I could be wrong and this movie could be a steaming pile of crap. Sequels to superhero movies don't always do it for me.

I hope they pick a better writer for the Avengers movie. The Xmen movies were good but fell short of the greatness they could have had. I don't know if it was Bryan Singer or the writing staff that messed it up. Probably both.

Scarlett Johansson looks good as Black Widow.

Donner's team for Wolverine would do a much better job with the script!

Wonder why they ditched Terrance Howard as Rhodes? They should have replaced him with someone tougher, like Tyrese Gibson or DMX... Don Cheadle?...

By Captain Pierce at 10:07 PM ON 07/17/09

TelePrompter, are you kidding me? The Wolverine script was (IMO, anyway) a worse steaming pile than X3. And X3 was a pretty bad steaming pile (again IMO). And yeah, Zak Penn had a piece of X3, but he gets a free pass for that because I just looked him up on IMDB and he wrote PCU. So we're even now, Zak... :)

I don't get too worried about writers on films, directors control so much of the story direction, they can literally re-write scripts on the set. I understand RDJ and Feverau did that a lot on the set of Iron Man.
