No one was more thrilled than us at the news that Comedy Central was resurrecting Futurama with an order of 26 new episodes, to begin airing in 2010.
But now comes news on Forces of Geek that 20th Century Fox Television, which produces the series, may be considering recasting the voice roles. Say it ain't so!
Here's what the site reported:
According to no less than cast members John DiMaggio [Bender], Phil LaMarr [Hermes] and Maurice LaMarche on their Facebook pages, a casting notice has gone out to replace actors DiMaggio, LaMarche, Billy West [Fry] and Katy Sagal [Leela].Recast Fry and Leela?? And Bender??
It seems clear that Fox is trying to cut costs for the show by hiring lower-paid voice talent—either that or trying to get a leg up on salary negotiations by sending out recasting notices to scare the current talent into rolling over on pay.
But fans may recall that Fox TV tried to muscle the original Simpsons voice cast in a similar fashion. That didn't go so well, so here's hoping the original Futurama cast remains intact.
By Davidothetorpedo at 1:03 PM ON 07/17/09
FUK THAT!!!!!!!!!!!
By elvenangel at 1:10 PM ON 07/17/09
pure blasphemy! Horror! I'd rather the show stay off the air if this turns out to be true! Unlike a children's cartoon where voice changes usually go unnoticed a show like this? It'd be like Recasting The Simpsons or Family Guy! Totally ruins it!
By hyperactiveewok at 1:19 PM ON 07/17/09
No!! I really hope they don't change the voices. The characters just won't be the same...
By IsoTek at 1:20 PM ON 07/17/09
Phuleeze....I gave up on this mindless dren years ago. Bring back FARSCAPE!
By cassi at 1:32 PM ON 07/17/09
Nooooooo!
What's the point of bringing back futurama without the original voice actors? No, no, no.
By Mac at 1:44 PM ON 07/17/09
If they recast I will not watch...simple as that.
By Ryan at 1:45 PM ON 07/17/09
Won't be watching if its not the same people. You know just Wednesday night I was talking about cartoons with friends and I was saying that even when I was young, I could tell the difference. I didn't know who Robin Williams was when Aladdin was released but I sure could tell it wasn't him in 'Return of Jafar', even though Dan Castellaneta tried his hardest to copy the voice. Even kids can say "That's not the same person". 'Futurama' is for ADULTS! You think they won't notice. Hell especially Katey Segal.
By Mandy at 1:57 PM ON 07/17/09
I'm not watching if they recast. This isn't a Disney sequel.
By muckraker at 2:00 PM ON 07/17/09
I'd rather have other actors than have it not come back at all. Even with new voices, it would still be better than drivel like Ghost Hunters or Destination Truth.
By Jaina2000 at 2:01 PM ON 07/17/09
I will not be watching if the original cast is not intact. They are the heart of the show, it just wouldn't be Futurama without them!
By mucksux at 2:06 PM ON 07/17/09
GH is cool, u suk!!! ;-P
By me at 2:06 PM ON 07/17/09
New cast? Forget it. They should just cancel it. I certainly won't watch unless they bring back the original cast. What, they haven't made ENOUGH money on this show? Greedy bastards.

Kill all Fox Execs...Kill all Fox Execs...Hey, foxy mama, wanna kill all Fox execs?
By dal6t&a$shrt at 2:15 PM ON 07/17/09
This is as bad as the time they changed Bewiched's husband in mid-season. Just because the actor died is no excuse.
Actually, the voice actor's do make a difference. I can recognize the performer's personality and I would miss them if they did not do the roles. As far as I am concerned, 20th Century Fox Television can bite my shiny metal ass.
By asfm at 2:24 PM ON 07/17/09
Futurama without those guys wouldn't be Futurama. And since (based on the movies) Futurama already isn't really Futurama, that means that Futurama would be something I can't even calculate.
By Manifold at 2:25 PM ON 07/17/09
The actor who played the original Darrin didn't die (he lived until 1992), he had a back injury that prevented him from continuing. Other cast members died and were replaced though.
By Forrester at 2:28 PM ON 07/17/09
I don't believe this for one second. You can't recast those voice actors. Not even Fox is that stupid. It's just a negotiating ploy.
By Shaun at 2:32 PM ON 07/17/09

By phoenixjf at 2:40 PM ON 07/17/09
Just as they give hope for more Futurama, Fox shows its complete idiocy by trying the same lame stunt that they tried with recasting Simpsons voices. You'd think they would have learned by now. Okay fine--let's all teach it to them again. And again. And again. Until finally some Fox exec has two brain cells that actually talk to one another.
Hmm, this could take some time.
By MUADIB at 2:41 PM ON 07/17/09
Theses fools changing the cast are probablyn the same fools that thought changing "sci fi" to "syfy" was a good idea.Or at least they are sharing the same defective brains>
By bon_the_vegetarian at 2:50 PM ON 07/17/09
ah, don't mess with perfection. i'm totally not going to watch if they change the main characters like that.
By batch at 3:02 PM ON 07/17/09
I need some more of that executive powder. Wheres a Fox exec?
By Microchip at 3:29 PM ON 07/17/09
I just knew that some TV exec would find a way to ruin the comeback... and there we have it. I have no desire to watch Futurama with cheap replacement actors. Fox worked really hard to cancel Futurama the first time, and they are wasting no time to make sure it gets canceled a second time.
By Rico at 3:36 PM ON 07/17/09
See, this is why TV execs have trouble with ratings and viewership - they're all morons. If they don't get the original cast back, then they may as well not bother airing the show, because it will bomb.

BRING BACK THE 4400!!
By themoirae at 4:02 PM ON 07/17/09
Hopefully, this is just a negotiation tactic and they don't actually try to move forward with different voice actors. They will be very dependent on the existing Futurama fanbase to generate decent ratings and it is pretty clear that much of that fanbase will reject such a change.
By themoirae at 4:03 PM ON 07/17/09
And I forgot to mention, I also think that the new "SyFy" moniker is about the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

By anachronite at 4:58 PM ON 07/17/09

By Invisigoth at 5:01 PM ON 07/17/09
I agree with the above. I would rather the show never, ever come back than have any other voice actors play these parts. Period.

By -Magna- at 5:24 PM ON 07/17/09
How does fox stay in business, with their terrible business practices. Basically their animated line-up is the only thing that's keeping them afloat, their original programming is just god awful. When the time comes they'll be the first mega station to go under.
By Jonas72 at 5:28 PM ON 07/17/09
Excuse me? That's got to be the most idiotic thing I've heard in a while... It won't be Futurama without the original voice cast! Do they want it to fail? What is wrong with these executive morons?? They might as well not bother if this is how they plan to go about it, I for one won't watch it without the original cast.
By theDudeinLA at 5:54 PM ON 07/17/09
Love Futurama!
I will not watch without the original cast!
By Crazy snail at 6:02 PM ON 07/17/09
Changing these characters' voices would seem to me like dubbing Teal'c from Stargate SG-1 with a chirpy voice or changing the actor altogether. It just wouldn't be the same, no matter how good the new actor was.
By FoxSux at 6:12 PM ON 07/17/09
Fox is full of idiots. I don't even watch television anymore BUT WOULD WATCH THIS had it not been for this news. Pure idiocy.
By BVK at 6:19 PM ON 07/17/09
Futurama without Billy West will be as unwatchable as Squidbillies.
By cwratliff at 6:30 PM ON 07/17/09
Just to add my voice to the growing number-- I will not watch with re-cast actors. No question. I bought all seasons on DVD, and all the DVD movies as well.
They can re-cast the FOX executives who thought of this idea!

They simply cannot replace Billy West. He not only provides the voice of Fry, but the Professor and Zapp Brannigan and a slew of supporting characters as well. Futurama without Billy West is not Futurama.
By Rob at 8:32 PM ON 07/17/09
They tied it with Twikki on Buck Rogers. They tried it with a new 'Star Trek' movie. Both failed miserably.
By Joe at 8:34 PM ON 07/17/09

By sonny at 9:20 PM ON 07/17/09
I would rather they not come back then change all the characters. You Blow if you do this, Fox.
By netwrok at 9:22 PM ON 07/17/09
Yea, you might as well not even bring the show back if you are going to ruin it with new voice actors.
Futurama is/was a great show, and no one can do it like the originals.
Instead of replacing the voice actors for Futurama, perhaps you should be replacing the decision makers for this failure of an idea.
By DaveM at 9:38 PM ON 07/17/09
Let's be clear on some facts which are repeatedly mis-stated over and over in the above comment.
FOX NETWORK - The TV network that cancelled FUTURAMA.
FOX TELEVISION - TV branch of the movie studio that licenses and holds the rights to FUTURAMA.
FOX NETWORK cancelled FUturama, not FOX TELEVISION.
COMEDY CENTRAL being a cable station does not have the production budget of FOX NETWORK, why do you think most of their programming is composed of lame comedians no one has heard of and reruns of Stand-up comics that have already aired on HBO a hundred times?
When you are going to blame someone for making an assanine change, make sure you are blaming the correct party.
FOX TELEVISION is the one who put out the casting sheets in a threat to get the actors to lower their wage requests.
FOX NETWORK has nothing to do with it in this particular instance.
ANd remember, the studio tried to do this early on in the run of THE SIMPSONS and voice actors for that series made it painfully clear who held the upper hand. It will be the same case here. If the original cast doesn't return, FOX will have a serious public relations problem including a very vocal and upset fan base who will not support these episodes in any way shape or form include the extremely lucrative DVD sales.

I remember when they dropped the original actor who did the voice for "Ren" from "Ren and Stimpy", Billy West did the voice of both of them and i could tell it was not the same. It would be the same with "Futurama". I love this show and not having the original actor doing the voices, what would be the point.
By ChenXi at 10:33 PM ON 07/17/09
Fox is HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE! They don't know good stuff when they have it, and they cancel it. Jesus fing christ. Firefly, Sarah Connor...and now recast Futurama???!?!?!?! I call BS.

True fans of Futurama won't stand for different voice actors. If those FOX executives are so concerned about cutting costs, they should quit giving themselves fat bonuses year after year. Don't insult Futurama and its fans. Bring back the original voice actors or forget the whole thing!
By Richard at 11:15 PM ON 07/17/09

What the hell are they thinking? isn't it painfully obvious how stupid that decision will be? You guys remember the beginning of the first movie right? By paul at 6:41 AM ON 07/19/09
The show was brought back because teh FANS bought the dvd box sets and the movies. The FANS need to blast FOX's inbox, telling them changing the cast is not acceptable, and inthe long run the money they save on voice "talent" will turn into a loss of sales profit.
By Syberwolf at 11:02 AM ON 07/19/09

By Son of a Maui Portagee at 6:24 PM ON 07/19/09
While I definitely love the voice cast and intend to support them in this as much as possible, I'm torn.
Why? Well, Matt Groenig was first (and still is) an excellent print cartoonist. His strips don't have nor need a soundtrack to be absolutely hilarious works of ingenuous comedic art.
Also, anyone well-versed in the history of the microphone, the invention that makes the soundtrack possible, has to be aware that there's a significant part of the planet's populace for which sound/voice can never be an issue. And I wouldn't slight them for being able to enjoy the Comedy Central edition of FUTURAMA even if it featured a less than ideal soundtrack with subpar actors.
FUTURAMA is so visually rich that I think I'll be tempted to tune in and experience it as they do with only the closed-captioning.
And I intend to inform Comedy Central that their attempts to market to me while I am on a commercial stroll might otherwise succeed except that I have the sound turned OFF when I watch their edition of FUTURAMA.
By PissedFuturamaFan at 4:10 AM ON 07/20/09
this is like making 26 new episodes of The Simpsons, but with changing the voices of Homer, Marge, Bart, Moe, and even Ned! this sucks! you cant seriously expect to resurrect a show by recasting the main roles! i'm sure that FOX has got MORE than enough money to meet the voice actor's demands
By misteredj at 4:16 AM ON 07/20/09
Their voices match the ones in my brain that keep me from doing bad things.... I don't know what would happen if those voices don't match.....

I bet you all watch it.
By Son of a Maui Portagee at 12:30 PM ON 07/20/09
@ PissedFuturamaFan
While THE SIMPSONS is most definitely visual, FUTURAMA is even more so. So visually rich that I don't think the two are comparable as in your example. But I can understand that others have different priorities and the FUTURAMA soundtrack is excellent and definitely adds to the experience. I would much rather prefer that it not be downgraded.
By JDubb at 1:03 PM ON 07/20/09
This is typical of FOX.

Mindless 'dren'? Despite it's silliness, Futurama was anything but mindless. I loved Farscape too but which program has withstood the test of time? Farscape has been gone for a looooong time, despite fan protests. Futurama has pretty much been on the air since it's cancellation and is still going strong in the ratings. Not so with Farscape. This one actually has a chance. Though I can't really see myself getting into it with all new voices. Billy West has a flexibility in voices that is bar none to other voice actors, in my opinion.
By Son of a Maui Portagee at 1:35 PM ON 07/27/09
@DaveM,
It failed to make a profit for Paramount and its partner Spyglass, for one:
"Point being, for all the justified rejoicing, the Star Trek reboot will still depend on DVD/Blu Ray sales to actually make a profit." - Scott Mendelson, HUFFINGTON POST
huffingtonpost.com/scott-mendelson/harry-potter-and-the-half_b_240244.html
So like FUTURAMA its "success" will be determined by how well it does in disc sales.
