Lucasfilm goes to dark side with Cylon, uh, Darth Vader toaster

Lucasfilm goes to dark side with Cylon, uh, Darth Vader toaster

Never let it be said that George Lucas' Lucasfilm lacks for imagination ... about how to grab your last dime, even if it means "borrowing" a brilliant idea from someone else.

We're talking about the above-pictured Star Wars toaster, which will be a featured item at this year's Comic-Con International, according to a report on Wired.com.

Oh, what's that, you say? It looks awfully familiar?

That's because it calls to mind the Cylon toaster, the promotional item tied to Syfy's original series Battlestar Galactica (see the cool video below, from our sister site DVICE).

Where's the logic in a Star Wars toaster anyway? The Cylon version is an elegant visual pun, an allusion to the fact that the Colonials routinely refer to skinjobs as that kitchen appliance. Who's ever called Darth Vader a toaster? Were there even toasters in the Star Wars universe? Or bread, for that matter?

And Hello Kitty was making Hello Kitty toasters at least 11 years ago so she has both of you beat. Not such an original idea anymore, huh

The Darth Vader toaster has actually been available from the SW Shop for quite some time now. I'm pretty sure I was making fun of it at least 6-9 months ago.

Jesus did the toast circuit long before Cylons or Lucasarts caught on to the idea. I believe he also appeared on potato chips and the odd pancake.

Man, George must be desperate to go into the toaster biz. What's next? Salad dressing??? Skywalker Ranch dressing

Hate the new attitude on this site.

I agree. I miss actual news on scIFI.

I'm jumpin on the bandwagon, I really dont like what this site/channel has become. My daily surfing has changed from updated SciFi info to a Wrestling/Contract mess. I was happy back in 92 when they played all reruns. It was awesome!! I also appreciated the evolvement into original programming like Farscape and SG1. Nuff said.

Agreed. The site has degraded over time until now it caters to whatever seems trendy. Let's hope once they change their name someone else takes up the SciFi title again and does justice to it.

Yea, I remember seeing the Vader toaster attached to the Hyperspace emails for quite some time now.

By MJ at 10:17 PM ON 07/09/09

That toaster was made by the Sci-Fi Channel, not the SyFy Channel. It's written there right on the side of it.

By dougcosine at 11:14 PM ON 10/05/09
