A two-minute film, "House of Imagination," has gone live to reflect SCI FI's brand evolution to Syfy on Tuesday, celebrating Syfy's unique spin on imagination.
The new film features stars from Warehouse 13, Eureka, Ghost Hunters, Caprica, Sanctuary, Stargate Universe, Destination Truth and ECW.
Here's how SCI FI describes the promotional movie:
The film invites viewers into a celebratory house party populated with rooms inspired by the Channel's original programs and characters. Goldfrapp's "Happiness" provides the soundtrack for the trip through the never-ending house, where anything can and does happen in each one-of-a-kind room. Through high-concept visual storytelling, each scene fuses a bold complement of visual effects with practical set design. "House of Imagination" was designed to be modularly deconstructed into a dynamic, long-running campaign of 10- and 5-second network identifications. The experience will extend digitally into Syfy.com/Imagine Greater, beginning July 7, where visitors will have a rich, fully interactive and immersive experience as guests at the house party. Visitors will be able to explore parallax rooms and to discover exclusive content including games, behind-the-scenes and making-of footage, cast interviews, downloadable wallpaper and much more. ...
"House of Imagination" is produced and directed by the award-winning U.K.-based 4Creative team led by director Brett Foraker, who was joined specifically for this project by director of photography Larry Fong (Watchmen, 300) and production designer Tino Schaedler (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, V For Vendetta), with visual effects by MPC (Watchmen, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix).

I believe a "two-minute film" that promotes a specific product is more commonly known as a commerical.
Not bad though.
By Jwb52z at 1:31 PM ON 07/02/09
I'm really sick of the whole "we have to change to get more/new viewers or a new audience" line.
By kdr at 1:46 PM ON 07/02/09
I'm wondering if it's more of a "we have to change the name because we lost the trademark on the term Sci-Fi."
By matt at 1:49 PM ON 07/02/09
Better programming would do more to capture a larger audience than a new name.
By KillerKroc at 1:51 PM ON 07/02/09
Wow, that was pretty cool. Maybe this won't be so bad after all! Anyone know the name of the song?
By Shelma32 at 1:58 PM ON 07/02/09
Fantastic video!
By Kanocain at 2:24 PM ON 07/02/09
I agree with kdr. They lost the trademark and this was the best they could come up with. And this ain't a film – it's a commercial. And a girly one at that. It reminds me more of a soda pop ad than science fiction. This channel is going down the tubes people.
By Rick at 2:28 PM ON 07/02/09
Great film, still a terrible new name.
Is this the type of production quality we can expect in all the new films you guys make? Or will you keep pumping out junk that barely qualifies as B-grade?
By godhammer at 2:29 PM ON 07/02/09
Good to know there are no Asians in Imaginationland. Unless you count Lou Diamond. And I don't. I guess one happy black man will have to do.
and yeah, better programming. not name change.
By dannyp at 2:43 PM ON 07/02/09
sy fy --still the stupidest branding choice ever. What is sad is that these execs can't "imagine greater" -- this is the best they can do.
They can, though ensure that only one show worth watching is on the schedule in any season, and that we'll have to wait an entire YEAR for the next season: New Eureka every July--10 month hiatus. New Sanctuary every Fall, 10 month hiatus.
Oh yea--don't forget "wait a year for the second half of the final season of BSG"
But they keep the wresting flowing free.....
By TrekMac at 2:54 PM ON 07/02/09
The best way I see this is that I have to find another channel to get my science fiction. This is just as bad as TheWB's change over to TheCW. Grrr...
Once they make the change over, I'm going to find another place to hang around.
By dannyp at 3:05 PM ON 07/02/09
WOW--they are actively deleting posts that complain about the quality of shows, or how long we have to wait between seasons.
No Free Speech on Syfy on the Fourth of July
By Joe ASAP at 3:05 PM ON 07/02/09
KillerKroc - the name of the song is "Happiness" by Goldfrapp.
I gotta disagree with you as i believe that the name change is quite stupid.
By bytme at 3:06 PM ON 07/02/09
Nice little film, but I'm still going to call it the syphilis channel from now on.
By dannyp at 3:08 PM ON 07/02/09
bytme: expect your post to be deleted soon! I made a comment about long hiatuses between seasons, except for wrestling, and they took it down 5 minutes later, along with 3 or 4 posts from others.
By dannyp at 3:11 PM ON 07/02/09
IMAGINE Greater on Syfy --imagine is all you can do if you want Greater scifi on syfy
If you want Real "Greater" it will have to be found on another channel.
By bytme at 3:17 PM ON 07/02/09
Yeah, I fully expect it to be deleted Danny. When I pointed out that "syfy' was slang for syphilis before, it got deleted.
By Rick at 3:19 PM ON 07/02/09
They deleted one of my comments on the last "SyFy"-related article they posted a couple days ago. They're getting tired of reading all the reality-checks.
NEWS FLASH: PEOPLE HATE THE NEW NAME.
By crichtonx at 3:50 PM ON 07/02/09
Yeah, the new name is just plain stupid. Everyone I talk to, views the channel as a joke. Every since the inclusion of wrestling into its' programming lineup, the channel has been going down. What they really need is better real science fiction programming, far less reality shows and no more killer monster of the week movies.
By Scjessey at 4:14 PM ON 07/02/09
Very cool. Best example of this since "Tattoo Man" a few years ago.
But no amount of slick advertising is going to make me want to watch reality TV or wrestling, which have already diluted a once great brand. The sad demise of this channel from what was once one of the brightest stars in the science fiction and fantasy universe has been heartbreaking to watch.
By Marko-Polo at 4:21 PM ON 07/02/09
I don't like this at all, not one bit.
Whats happening? When did the 'Scifi' Channel decide to changer their name?
Very girly film.
By lunartic at 4:21 PM ON 07/02/09
wow, gorgeous. really looking forward to caprica too. best show, since, well, battlestar ;) (i liked virtuality but guessing Fox won't make that a series.)
By crankymouse at 4:26 PM ON 07/02/09
ironic that no one hates change more than a science fiction fan, and i count myself one. syfy wouldn't be my choice, but seems okay to me. really just want good shows, not caring too much what y'all call urselves. nice commercial tho.
By spradj89 at 4:28 PM ON 07/02/09
All i want from SCIFI is quality science fiction! All SCIFI needs is a few more gems like BSG and Stargate series. Drop the wrestling...what the hell does it have to do with scifi anyway! You can name a show anything as long as you follow the blueprint of these shows! GREAT writing, GREAT actors, and GREAT editing and graphics for the show. I would of watched BSG even if it would've been called "Killer Robots chase us across the Galaxy as we search for a mythical planet"...ya know KRCUATGAWSFAMP! So please SCIFI channel, give us a few more of these and you'll never have to change your name! SO SAY WE ALL!!!!!!!!!!!
By bunnyb at 4:29 PM ON 07/02/09
Sorry, I have a problem with the whole darn thing. And why is professional wrestling on a SCI FI channel? Are they changing the name so that they can schedule lots of crap (like wrestling) ???
By Jack at 4:43 PM ON 07/02/09
Odds are good you will see more and more non-scifi shows on this channel starting next week. Within a year I bet you will not be able to tell the difference between SYFY and USA. Its a good thing I like Reba, Law and Order and JAG.
By wpb30635 at 4:58 PM ON 07/02/09

By azrael1122 at 5:00 PM ON 07/02/09
I still think the name SyFy is stupid. But if the original movies they show on Saturday nights had as much imagination as went into this commercial, they'd be doing a lot better...
By Spaceman Spiff at 5:32 PM ON 07/02/09
Why can't they just cal it the Science Fiction channel? Or just SF?
By HRM at 5:36 PM ON 07/02/09
Stupid name choice, but this channel quit really being the Science Fiction channel years ago.
By msmaria at 5:53 PM ON 07/02/09
To the geniuses who think they "lost" the "trademark" on the term "sci-fi" -- nice guess. It's not trademarkable in the first place. However, "SyFy" is, thus the change.
And either people will like what they program or they won't. If they like the shows, they'll watch, no matter what they call the network.
By rofl at 6:09 PM ON 07/02/09
i think it is funny how everyone thinks its a stupid name(it is) but they dont care and they never will as long as everyone remains where they are..and the funny thing is most of you will move past it they have no rights to call themselves SCIFI cause they are not sure they still show science fiction stuff but sadly they are moving away from it.they are turniing into what almost every other netwrk is and thats to get ratings..they are turning into abc cbs FOX(WHICH GETS RID OF GOOD SHOWS TSCC FIREFLY ECT...)...STARGATE was the show i ever really liked to watch on scifi and its gone..i did watch dr who but now i can get that on bbc america along with torchwood and one of my newer faves prime evil..syfy will realize it eventually that they made some bad choices along with some loyal viewers.... i just hope they dont start showing the news!
By ronbo666 at 6:25 PM ON 07/02/09

It was a nice-looking video...
but it doesn't make the hurt go away.
By photoguyRyan at 6:58 PM ON 07/02/09
I still havent seen a coherent explanation for the name/brand change.
And... This stupid vid makes me think of a condom commercial aimed at 11 y/o girls that are into basic pre-teen fantasy tales, as opposed to science fiction for older fans (you know, the ones with $$$'s your sponsors like).
You people need a new marketing company to get you straightened out. The one you got is kinda wimpy, and has no direction.
By IE1 at 7:04 PM ON 07/02/09
Lets see if I get past the suckheads not allowing posts, this is my third atttempt...
2nd time I had to write this. Your web site staff are as up on things as your marketing and administrative staffs.
The vid makes me think that your channel is designed for little girls that are into butterflys and unicorns, not real sci fi fans, and especially not the fans that your sponsors like (the ones that spend $$'s on their products).
By Lefly at 7:47 PM ON 07/02/09
To MsMaria:
Yes, NBC-Universal "abandoned" the trademarks they already had for Sci-Fi Channel. Just go to uspto.gov and do a trademark search and you'll find all the variations that were trademarked by USA Networks, which was bought out. "We can't brand Sci-Fi Channel" sounds like a weak excuse, or else misunderstanding of intellectual property law, from the Sci-Fi... excuse me, Syfy brass.
By Lefly at 7:49 PM ON 07/02/09
Oh, and incidentally... did you notice that in the entire promo there's not a single "sci fi" thing? It's all girly/kids stuff. If that's what we're supposed to "imagine," I can understand why all the guys are watching other networks.
By Allen Charles at 8:17 PM ON 07/02/09
The truth is science fiction fans are very difficult to satisfy. NBC Universal has decided to try to attract a different kind of viewer. The number of people that are interested in science fiction is limited to begin with, and whenever you get people that make it everything you do part, your audience size is smaller even than what it was to begin with.
A name change will allow NBC Universal to gradually take the sci-fi genre off the channel and replace it with less expensive to produce reality TV in other counties shows that have a brawler-based appeal.
All one has to do is read the comment section of any of these articles on this website to find out that the science-fiction audience is just too picky and small to devote a whole channel to wear laced a whole channel of cheaply produced programs.
Most likely a fantasy genre will grow on Syfy until the majority of the programming will not contain anything remotely close to science-fiction. Very likely the soft power genre will also be used to program this new channel. They will probably buy canceled series from other networks that they can put on cheaply to appear to be interested in science fiction to appear to support the genre.
A good example is the new alien nation series have been reading about, the only thing they will have to do to populate this series is to go back through all of the old law order series pull out anything that has a storyline that doesn’t involve Caucasian people and substitute the new visitor race instead of whatever it might have been before. If the original series called for a black man as an officer and a story in a black neighborhood or Latino officer in Latino neighborhoods just substitute the visitors and you got your new story. Nothing about that series will actually have anything to do with science fiction except the immigrants are supposedly from some other planet instead of country. You give a blue horse a red paint job, and you could call it a red horse. The same with so many of our so-called science-fiction shows they just painted over whatever it had been before and called it science fiction
By tati at 8:22 PM ON 07/02/09

Why can't you guys just admit your marketing department blew it big time?
By sigh21 at 8:56 PM ON 07/02/09
So, some Marketing buffoon decided that the term Sci Fi is a turn off to Lifetime Movie Channel watchers and thought a name change might trick those peeps into watching. Good one. Hey, let's change the recipe for Coca Cola, also. We'll make it better and call it New Coke!
By IsoTek at 9:49 PM ON 07/02/09
Calling yourself something else will not erase the image the audience has in their mind of you, past, present or future. You need to improve your programming Scifi and perhaps go back to your roots, dump the high profile connections with NBC/Universal as they are too corporate and killing your onetime close connection to the audience pulse.
By GeneD at 10:14 PM ON 07/02/09
While the commercial was whimsical, I'm still not thrilled by the rebranding. Both SyFy and the Cartoon Network (among other channels) seem determined to move away from their core audiences: http://blog.toonzone.net/blogs/28/hypothetically-speaking/
Going for a broader ratings base is fine; but there's less science _fiction_ and more pseudoreality programming than ever before...

The "film" as they call it is what everybody else calls a commercial. The "film" really doesn't make much sense to me. I don't like the name change at all. They should stick with Sci-Fi, but everybody updates their image once in a while.
I sat and watched War of the Worlds: The Next Wave with morbid curiosity the other night even though it was pretty bad, but whenever wrestling comes on I'm frantically looking for the remote to change the channel. I'd rather watch one of their movies than wrestling.
They are a channel for science fiction themed television and movies, but they constantly let science fiction shows and movies slip through their fingers. They let TV Land pick up Star Trek: TOS. I've never seen an episode of Voyager or DS9 on there. The only Star Trek movie they ever show is First Contact. You never see a TOS movie.
In addition to that they let Spike win the bidding for all of the Star Wars movies. I know Lucasfilm probably wanted a ton of money for these, but act like you made an attempt. They don't act like they made a play for Clone Wars either. On top of that what about classic sci-fi shows and movies?
You never see Lost In Space anymore, The Flash, Knightrider, and others. They could show Airwolf, Forever Knight, the War of the Worlds tv show, Lois and Clark, Earth: Final Conflict, and a ton of others. I'd love to see MST3K reruns. That would be awesome. As far as movies go you never see 2001, Planet of the Apes, Alien, Predator, or a Terminator movie. And I've only seen the Indiana Jones movies on there once then they disappeared. And I can't remember the last time I saw a Godzilla movie! Granted all of these shows aren't great, some of them I don't like at all, but I know there are tons of people out there that will watch them.
They like to lump horror in too with sci-fi and I'm fine with that, but you never see an episode of Dark Shadows anymore, old or new. They may have shown them a long time ago, but I've never seen a Hammer film or a Universal Horror movie which are staples in the genre. I see more horror and sci-fi on AMC now than I do on Sci-Fi/SyFy.
It's like they want to be our friends, but they're ashamed and embarrassed for anyone else to see us with them in public.
By Kevin at 12:35 AM ON 07/03/09
And a tired "Whatever" rings out from the land.
Obviously the suits don't listen to much outside their cocoon. Here's hoping a real SF TV service eats your lunch.
By cvb352 at 1:53 AM ON 07/03/09
SyFy experience the evolution to more wrestling and ghost hunting. Welcome to the era of me not watching you anymore. Seriously though you need to stick to your roots and show some good scifi not wrestling.
By Daumier at 2:49 AM ON 07/03/09
"Most likely a fantasy genre will grow on Syfy until the majority of the programming will not contain anything remotely close to science-fiction."
I wouldn't mind that much actually, as long as it's good fantasy. Personal taste leans heavily towards magic and fantastical beasties, what can I say? :d
Speaking of which, why can't SciFi/SyFy shows and movies be as interesting as their promotional shorts? Less wrestling and ghost hunters, more lifesize living origami unicorns please.
By Jonas72 at 7:48 AM ON 07/03/09
Nice video, shame about the name. How on earth did you come up with? I can't imagine a committee sitting around discussing names, and the best they could come up with was "SyFy"? Why the change in the first place? A misunderstood need to be "cool", and "hip to the trends"? Oh well, no matter, it's not like you guys actually listen to the public, is it?
By Rob at 8:04 AM ON 07/03/09
You mean this is for real? I heard two months ago that this whole 'SyFy' idiocy was just a marketing ploy & SciFi was never really going to change it's name to something so incredibly stupid.

Nice promo - all very young and beautiful people. If I look in the mirror I can see it clearly. The channel is not looking for me or my disposable income. SyFy is not the Sci-Fi of old, nor the Sci Fi of now and into the future.
By TrekMac at 9:27 AM ON 07/03/09
After watching the promo again, I cannot stress how much I will not tune into this channel. They are going from a masculine / feminine perspective to a more 'alternative' perspective. It goes with the purple.

SciFi becomes GyFy!
By TrekMac at 9:35 AM ON 07/03/09

Someone over at SciFi has entered into GyFy!
By TrekMac at 10:02 AM ON 07/03/09
Hey guys and gals. I just watched the promo for one last time, and I can to the conclusion that - SciFi is not intrested in hetrosexual viewers. Everything sreams 'alternative' lifestyle. It is as if they are becoming the first completely "alternative" themed channel. I don't see fantasy when I watch that promo, but I do see people celebrating a sense of 'purple pride'.
By mover at 4:34 PM ON 07/03/09
Why even use some bastardization of the phrase Sci-fi if they can't even keep to the genre? This channel has redneck opera wrestling.

'To the geniuses who think they "lost" the "trademark" on the term "sci-fi" -- nice guess. It's not trademarkable in the first place.'
Wrong! They actually did have a trademark on the wrods 'Scifi Channel' and let it lapse. The word Channel was the key. Scifi isn't trademarkable but Scifi Channel like HIstory Channel or food Channel is.
By Keaggan at 1:15 AM ON 07/04/09
I feel it is a silly name change but in the end I think we all care more about what shows are on this channel. Think for a second, how many shows do you watch on any one channel? One? Two? Maybe three? How many shows do you watch on SyFy? For me the golden years were when I would watch SG-1 & Atlantis plus BSG. Now I am trying out Sanctuary and will give Caperca a shot. But I am looking forward to SGU! All in all if I get 2 solid shows from a single channel that is a pretty good deal. ABC only gives me one show, CBS gives me two, and NBC gives me one. CN gives me only one now and Fox has only one show me. So, if SyFy gives me two I really like and maybe a third "good enough" show then I think they doing fine.
By kanocain at 2:23 AM ON 07/04/09
A smart network should pick up the name "SciFi Channel" after SyFy dumps it and bring back Firefly with new episodes and make it their flagship series. Booyah!
Yeah and what's up with all the censorship on the comments? Apparently SyFy is afraid of freedom of speech. I mean don't put up a forum if you can't handle constructive criticism. As long as no one says anything offensive, why can't they state their opinion?
By divephotog at 4:52 AM ON 07/04/09
What we have here is the reason Sci-Fi is dying, and the new SyFy will die even more quickly.
The channel has strayed from real science fiction programming, abd has been more of a horror channer (now the domain of their sister the Chiller Channel) and pseudo-science (Scarriest places, Ghost Hunters???) for possible ratings surge and viewers, while forgoing the real science fiction series, and real SF movies that are out there.
Sad to say, but this is not the last evolution we will see, and by the end of a year or so, it will morph again, to the channel we really want, or something that will die (quickly we hope!).
As far as the other networks dealing in sci-fi series, they really don't make appropriate decisions when it comes to them, and the independents do it so much better, as in the case of the now dead Terminator, SCC, Firefly, and numerous other programs that die just as they are getting their legs and story lines into a roll, and the independents marketing stuff like ReGenesis and Seeker more effectively than any regular network could have. Yes, Sci-Fi channel was supposed to be where one could come to see all the great series, and programs, but seems that they lost their way in disrespecting the gems of the past we love (Andromeda, Farscape, EFC, First Wave, etc) and instead putting up the schlock garbage we don't, like wrestling and ghosts.
NBC-Universal will regret their shuffle away from the real path, and what the channel really needs is someone who can point out to them what is good and pure, vs what is dumb and garbage. - KH
By viper64a at 9:34 PM ON 07/04/09
Name change nothing more than to bring about changes that have done nothing but doom the channel for a long time.
When they canceled Farscape, that was a sad day for the SciFi. There have been many shows on the channel that were real good programs, that have been taken off the air. But for some reason they keep programs that are crap. Wrestling on SciFi does not make sense in the least bit. Other than that NBC has an investment in that primordial soup of a program. I am like the others you can get rid of the reality shows that are prevalent ie Scare tactics=stupid. Ghost Hunters=stupid. When did James Bond have to do with the whole SciFi genre.
Maybe the executives with little thought would realize their mistakes. But obviously not. Time is of the essence for the channel or they risk going out of business. That is what happens when you stray from your roots. SciFi channel has done an excellent job in straying from SciFi.
I lost most of my interest when they quit showing the good programs and went with the garbage a long time ago.
By LoveUMore at 9:50 PM ON 07/04/09
They spent more money on this commercial than they did on the whole 'Warehouse 13' series :)
By iwillHATEsyfy at 9:54 PM ON 07/04/09
seriously, i think it'll just be a matter of time until someone comes up with a Science Fiction Channel, that we can all go to to watch old and new science fiction programming,
this "new" channel will be a joke. they're showing "National treasure." that's about as relevant to sci fi programming as, say, Wrestling.
you'll get your broad base of viewer, syfy. but you'll lose all your core fans to some new sci fi channel (just as you had once gained all the starving-for-sci fi-viewers). and then, you'll lose advertisers, and then you'll go under. you reap what you sow.
you would think a channel that once catered to science fiction viewers would NOT underestimate the power sci fi fans yield.
how many star trek films? how many star wars toys? what's the main demograhic of sci fi viewers and what is the ideal demograhic for advertisers?
you just lost a top money making fanbase, syfy.
By GrumpyOldMan at 1:31 AM ON 07/05/09
Wow. These posts are quite a read. The people have spoken, and in volumes any executive would have to be professionally suicidal to ignore.
This video ad is about nothing. And not in a clever way, it really is about nothing. There are Old Navy ads with more meaningful content. Terribly expensive I am sure, and kudos to the ad exec that talked you noobs into paying for it. Good to know someone else is giving you the same treatment you are giving your long-time fans. Did they buy you drinks first at least?
Please enjoy knowing you have alienated so many devoted and vocal fans. Standard marketing stats say 1 unhappy customer will tell 10 others; do the math. If mediocrity is what 'imagine greatererer' means then you are right on track. Good luck to your few remaining sci-fi originals, they clearly won't be supported by anyone who understands their target audiences.
By turet33 at 3:41 AM ON 07/05/09
Doncha think it's kind of strange that so many Hollywood blockbusters are science fiction, but this network claims it can't sell science fiction (or Sci Fi for that matter)? Since they can't go after the broader more desirable demos, they have decided to stake out the 10-16 year old male demo. Hence all the stupid monster movies. I'm not sure very many advertisers really care about that demo, but they own it. Yippee. The wrestling is just because it's free. At least I hope that's their rationalization.
One thing they might try is (and I'm gonna read this very slowly so maybe you get it) is
p-r-o-m-o-t-i-o-n. A good cable campaign for Battlestar Galactica might have really driven up the viewership. I don't recall seeing any. Of course with all the stops and starts in scheduling one can only assume that you didn't want viewership to build so perhaps promotion might have been counter-productive.
GE is in the toilet anyway, so perhaps this is all part of a master corporate failure syndrome.
Science fiction is probably my favorite genre and I NEVER watch your channel. That should tell you a lot. BSG was about it. Re-re-re-runs of Star Trek Next Gen when nothing else is on the other zillion channels on TV (which isn't often).
You guys should be ashamed. Truly pathetic performance.
A rose by any other name would still have nothing but monster slime draped all over it.

Syfy is the dumbest brand name I think I've ever heard. If they needed to get away from SciFi, then call it "Imagination channel" or some such. Syfy sound like the name for a yappy little dog with an incontinence problem.
Dumb.as.dirt.

The ad is kind of gay, though I must admit the chick is really hot.
Maybe you should have changed your name to The Fabulous Channel or something.

These are sad days for sci fi lovers. A lot of good shows got the axe and the people running the Sci Fi Channel have apparently gone crazy. I have ditched cable (broadcast digital is MUCH cheaper) and will soon likely stop paying attention to this site. Things will come around in time, but for now video games will fill the void.
By Doctor Who Fan at 7:17 PM ON 07/05/09
SyFy? Seriously? Well, it does answer the question, "Whaterver happened to the creators of "New Coke"?
By GT40oz at 10:46 PM ON 07/05/09
How did this stupid idea past the board at NBCUniversal? SyFy, way to alienate new viewers who instanly know what SciFi is when they pull up there TV Guide, but won't venture out far enough on there 400 cable channels to figure out what SyFy is. Lame. Other commenter was right this had to be about copyrights and owning a name. But for what purpose? The detriment to the success of the network overall?
By ferret7463 at 11:34 PM ON 07/05/09
I have to agree with bunnyb, This channel is going slowly slip away from the science fiction genre and in a few years time we will not be able to tell it from the rest of the garbage channels and they will have to say it's the SYFY channel not the Sci Fi channel you silly goose. Also about the comment Censorship, maybe they should model themselves after 451F firemen. whoops that may be too sci Fi for them .

You were born Sci Fi, you'll die Sci Fi! The new name smegging sucks! Don't change the name and getting rid of that stuped wrestling, too!!!!
By essayons7 at 9:37 AM ON 07/06/09
You know, when the SciFi channel first started, I had great hopes.
I can't comment on the original movies, since I haven't watched one (I guess that makes me less important in their eyes - not their target demographic...), but I CAN comment on the poor handling/non-existence of classic sci-fi/fantasy/horror content.
Case in point: Back in the "bad old days" of 40 channel cable, WPIX in NYC used to show a New Year's Eve marathon of The Twilight Zone. What they did was show complete episodes, and put commercials in between the episodes - so the shows were commercial-free.
Now this year on the 4th of July weekend, they put on a TZ marathon. Episodes are shredded, and commercials rampant.
This is not the way to make sci-fi fans happy.
By kookookor at 9:47 AM ON 07/06/09
I really don't care what its called. Just stop the crappy Saturday original movies. Take some time, spend some money and put some QUALITY SciFi movies out there in the world. You know what might happen regardless of what you call yourself? People will watch and you'll change the perception of SciFi rather than catering to the stereotype that its all cheese and gore and bad acting!
By socrywhydontcha at 11:01 AM ON 07/06/09
All this complaining about a name change for a TV station. If you don't like what they are doing...DON"T WATCH THE CHANNEL! No one is holding a gun to your head ya know. Go out and read a book. If you don't like that, don't finish it. Find a cure for cancer. DO SOMETHING ELSE.
Rant over. Go about your day now.

The only thing we learn from history
is we learn nothing from history.
Two words: New Coke
By heavenlysword at 12:41 PM ON 07/06/09
New Coke? Wow, blast from the past. So because a new soft drink failed 25 years ago TV networks shouldn't change their name? Great logic there.
By iwillHATEsyfy at 1:30 PM ON 07/06/09
i think the ire we're all putting on display is from the fact that the channel is lying to us by telling us it'll remain science fiction program oriented. we all knwo that's garbage (along with their new programming).
we'd all be better off if the channe lwere just straight with us and said, "Hey, look. it was fun while it lasted. but we're greedy, so we're jsut gonna throw up whatever is 'fiction' and let it fly."
unbeknownst to them, it won't fly. also, they hope to keep us around with the lie and by making the lie seem, well, not a lie, by putting on crappy sci fi programming. what an insult, "Syfy." well, no dice. you underestimated the intelligence of the sci fi viewer.
By KlytusImBored at 3:11 PM ON 07/06/09
I'm done with this channel. I've deleted it from RSS portal and removed it from my favorites on my cable remote. The shows are poor quality and sum up to B movie grade or worse. But for one last hurrah, you should check out this thread where there are other people just as angry as people here (different but popular website). Some of the stuff is pretty dang funny: http://www.tvweek.com/news/2009/03/sci_fi_channel_aims_to_shed_ge.php
By JBHypno at 4:53 PM ON 07/06/09
Ok how about this.
I trademark The Quantum Channel. The logo will be a big sprial with a Q in the middle. I setup a site to accept donations for a fan supported sci-fi network. Finally we air all the classic sci-fi shows we like: classic Dr. Who, Farscape, Firefly, etc... Later as donations mount we start producing original sci-fi series and movies.

ok this is bs why change the name ive been watching SCIFI channel since i was 8 why change a good thing it saddens me :(

I remember thinking things were going downhill when they got wrestling on there.
I miss the old days of that awesome show "Exposure" which showed all those great sci fi shorts by up and coming filmmakers, and Lexx and Farscape. First Wave and all of that. So many good shows which have been lost. Perhaps what is happening is that there is simply not enough love for sci fi to make it financially worthwhile.
I read on io9 recently that the reason sci fi movies do well is that people go to the theater to see explosions and boobs. On the tv, however, many people don't have time for thinkin' so they skip the sci fi. Must be the case, as even though I never saw it on the sci fi channel, a show like Odyssey 5 which was really neat got canceled, ostensibly for being too thinkitative. Now how will we know when Earthsea or something is coming on? Doesn't sound like many people will be tuning to SyFy to see any commercials in case they decide to show something they used to.
I don't care about the name. I understand the name change etc, but it does kind of hurt that I remember back when this channel first started and they had those awesome commercials which hinted at greatness. And their various evolutions with Sci-Fi world and stuff (where I discovered Manimal) but now they have strayed so far.
Maybe it's just that science fiction is never really destined to mean more than it does right now. Temporary focus until something better and less thinkity comes along. Nobody has to spare a moment of brain power to watch mostly-naked sweaty guys throwing one another around.

Will the new SYFY will be broadcasting the Michael Jackson funeral?
By Mosaic at 5:47 PM ON 07/07/09
I can understand - sort of - the name change because of widening the programming base... they might as well, since they haven't been a source for quality SF ANYthing for years. But the look of the name in print is stupid... we call it "siffy"... all that supposed brainpower and that's the best they could do?
By daddy51 at 12:53 AM ON 07/09/09
i think syfy is great. the world should change to be the same??
By linda at 9:03 PM ON 07/10/09
i to am done with this channel, youre showing pirates of the caribean, national treasure, james bond? what the hell are you executives thinking? i used to love the b movie horror/sci fi flicks. dont like the weekly shows much or the marathon, but i could always count on a good b movie. i think ill just watch chiller from now on unless sci fi is showing one of the classic sci fi movies. you blew it sci fi, you had a loyal following and said phuck you to us. same to you

I'm open minded about all this, I guess I'm an eternal optimist. This looks cool, and if this is truly where Sci Fi/SyFy is headed, it looks like a bright future.
