Paramount is developing a new feature-film version of the award-winning children's tale Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, which was previously adapted in 1982 by Don Bluth as the animated The Secret of NIMH, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Director Neil Burger (The Illusionist) is in talks to write the screenplay. Here's what the trade paper said:
Robert C. O'Brien's Rats of NIMH won the Newbery Medal in 1972 and has been a staple in children's bookstores and libraries since. The story centers on a mouse—the titular Mrs. Frisby, re-named Mrs. Brisby in the MGM movie—faced with a crisis when her son falls ill and she must move her family to escape a farmer's plow.Mrs. Frisby enlists a group of former lab rats, whom she soon discovers run a highly evolved society, who possess advanced technologies and divide labor in the manner of a human community.

Oh my God, *another* remake?! But why? The '82 original was a masterpiece of intrigue and animation! Now I'll admit that Neil Burger's involvement has me quirking an eyebrow in interest, but this here is a clear case of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

"The '82 original was a masterpiece of intrigue and animation!"
I would hardly call The Secret of NIMH a masterpiece both of intrigue and animation.
It is more like a see the movie once and then never again because you know the book is/was better.

If it sticks closer to the book than the first one than it may be ok, i loved the first movie when i saw it as a kid, but once i read the book i saw how much more there was to the story.

The book was better, but the movie was just fine. If they want to do a remake how about Watership Down? That book was brilliant. The movie, not so much.

Our memories of movies like 'The Secret of NIMH' and 'Watership Down' are, in part, a product of when we first saw them.
I read the NIMH book and saw the movie when I was around 9. I loved both, had the Secret of NIMH activity book, and probably a school lunchbox. Then it faded into the category of "childhood memory" as things tend to do.
Fast forward to college, a rainy day, a bike ride to a video store, and the rental of 'Secret of NIMH'. I was probably hoping to reclaim some of the magic that was there when I was 9...and after watching it through, my thought was, "Huh. I expected it to be more."
Not that it isn't a good movie with some great moments and wonderful animation. It just did not match up to what my young imagination made it into at the time. Maybe my memories filled in the gaps between book and movie by Brundlefly-ing them in my brain.
'Watership Down' on the other hand, I probably saw when I was even younger (I remember my aunt pulling my cousins out of the room during the snare scene) and I did not read the book until many years later. I still love both book and movie and can watch or read either with enjoyment, despite their differences. (The 'Bright Eyes' scene is still one of my favorite moments in any film.)

I'm not so sure about this one ... I loved NIMH (the movie) as a child, and recently watched it for the first time with my 7 yr old son. He loved it, and I enjoyed it just as much as I did back in the '80s.
I really wonder what the deal is with so many remakes lately. There are certainly MANY books out there (childrens and adults) that would make excellent movies ... why rehash old favorites? Part of me wants to see this new movie but part of me really doesn't.

I didn't like how the first movie differed from the book. I'll all for a more true to the book version -- calling it a remake when the first movie wasn't accurate to the book is just wrong. Call it a do-over, because the first one sucked.

I actually watched NIMH last weekend and still enjoy it after nearly 20 something years. I haven't read the book so if there is a different story that can be told, then its a good idea. As long as it in no way resembles the vile Secret of NIMH 2. *shudder*

I read the book with my class each year. I have always hoped they would remake the movie and do it according to the book. Secret of Nihm had the unfortunate shadow of Star Wars cast upon it, when everything Hollywood had to have magic and sword fights. The original Nimh was all science... NO magic.

YAY! LIve action Secret of Nimh!!!!! I can't wait!!!! LIve action ratties and mice (well, pc generated ones that look real a la Alivn and the Chipmunks) I hope they don't ruin this new version by steriotyping the characters like they do for other animated animal movies (you know what I mean, Disney being the nauseating culperate most of the time). It would be great it if was 'Lord of the Ring'-like!!!!!!
