Report: Ryan Reynolds is Green Lantern

Report: Ryan Reynolds is \<i\>Green Lantern\<\/i\>
Ryan Reynolds in Wolverine

A day after The Hollywood Reporter said that three actors were vying for the coveted title role in The Green Lantern, it reports that one has prevailed: Ryan Reynolds, whom Warner Brothers has settled on as its choice to play Hal Jordan. The film is being directed by Martin Campbell and produced by Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti.

Here's what the trade paper reported Friday night:

Reynolds and his camp entered negotiations for the part Friday, after the studio held two rounds of screen tests, along with actors Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. Justin Timberlake also did a screen test.

The studio had holding options on the actors, but, except for Reynolds, those expired Monday. Reynolds' option would have expired end of day Friday.

The trade paper goes on to observe that Reynolds will be the only one of the few actors to have played characters in both Marvel and DC films: He recently appeared as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and the character is in development for a spinoff movie. Fans of the Blade franchise also recall Reynolds role as Hannibal King.

Reynolds was also attached at one time to a Flash movie from writer/director David Goyer, but nothing ever came of that.

Deadpool is one thing, considering Reynolds has in the past stated being an avid fan of the comics. Though slated as Green Lantern, can he fill those shoes? Don't get me wrong, I love Ryan Reynolds, but there has to be someone more befitting of the serious role of the Green Lantern (especially pending on how they script this and which Lantern they'll take after).

Best of luck, as this may have just been a very bad move. Still, I'll likely give it a watch when it hits theaters in 2011, I'd assume.

By S.W. at 2:02 AM ON 07/11/09

I was really, really hopin' that some miracle would allow Nathan Fillion to fill Hal Jordan's shoes... Ah well. Good luck Ryan!

By Ranger12 at 2:08 AM ON 07/11/09

This article is inaccurate about him being the only actor to play a character in both DC and Marvel films.

James Marsden played Cyclops for Marvel's X-Men and then played Richard White, Perry White's son who was Lois Lane's significant other, in Superman Returns for DC.

By arodwuk at 2:14 AM ON 07/11/09

Damn, here I was wishing it'd be Nathan Fillion.

By PLPresa73 at 2:41 AM ON 07/11/09

Halle Berry played Catwoman and Storm...

By audio at 2:47 AM ON 07/11/09

im happy hes in this movie, since justin timberlake would have been terrible but wat about the deadpool spinoff?will he be able to make both movies for rival comic studio properties?

By myc at 3:24 AM ON 07/11/09

Should have been Nathan Fillion. Too bad, they missed out on a great opportunity.

By S.W. at 3:24 AM ON 07/11/09

PLPresa73,

We never speak of *that* movie. Ever. To speak of it is to bring EVIL into this world.

By koy at 3:56 AM ON 07/11/09

Ryan Reynolds is the best choice yo play Green Lantern. His able to be wise cracking one minute and serious the next with out missing a bet. He is Hal Jordon. Good call Ranger 12 on the James Marsden, like you said he was in both Marvel and DC. I believe that makes him the first i think. Peace Out

By hrbrtyaes at 4:16 AM ON 07/11/09

nice just hope it's a good movie not a cheap quick fix.

By Quynlan at 4:26 AM ON 07/11/09

Nope, Halle Berry was the first, even though her Catwoman didn't fit into Marvel continuity. But then again, neither did Marsden's character in Superman Returns.

By Paul at 5:23 AM ON 07/11/09

I guess I can live with Reynolds as GL. Thank God they didn't hire Timberlake!!

By General Zod at 5:46 AM ON 07/11/09

ryan reynolds???i'm not to sure on this, but martin cambell is a great director, so if he chose reynolds i can keep an open mind...

By Danyael at 5:56 AM ON 07/11/09

Nathan Fillion would be good as GL except....he's most likely starting to show his age. Casting Ryan Reynolds, on the other hand, means you've got someone who can grow into the part especially if they're going to make GL into a trilogy or more.

By spaceage whizkid at 7:04 AM ON 07/11/09

@Quynlan

Catwoman is DC so it won't fit Marvel continuity.

By nate9111 at 7:21 AM ON 07/11/09

Let me drop this truth on you marks! No body, no body who has done Marvel and gone to DC has made a good film. This is truth, this is fact

By REDante at 7:24 AM ON 07/11/09

I dont know if its all true, but if it is, I prefer him over Justin Timberlake....

By iwantgizmos at 7:48 AM ON 07/11/09

Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan / Green Lantern? Eewww! You may see that, but I can't and I would not watch a Green Lantern movie if were the actor to be in it. Yuck!

By Roman at 8:50 AM ON 07/11/09

This was a cool move for the studio. Now if they can just deliver a good script and stick to it. This had better not be campy. It has to be serious. LOL!

By Critic at 8:57 AM ON 07/11/09

You took the "character" from both universe's to literal, he's the only one to play a hero/villain in both.

By itisspencer at 10:11 AM ON 07/11/09

Beware the Death of carrers never play different Superheros your carrer will dwindle Halle Berry has seen this curse

By smegforbrain at 12:34 PM ON 07/11/09

Is Reynolds really the best man for the role of Hal Jordan? At a guess, it doesn't seem like it. Although, my best familiarity with Green Lantern is not with Hal Jordan, but Guy Gardner.

I just get the feeling that this is not the best casting. And I also wonder what audiences are to think of the same actor taking leading roles in two different super hero films (from competing companies no less).

By kryche at 2:17 PM ON 07/11/09

Nathian Fillion would have been a great choice, but I'll hold judgment on their choice until I've seen him in action (though I have no desire to watch anymore comic book movies and can't wait till Hollywood is over their comic craze, and rediscovers their own creativity instead of looking to other industries for it).

I just wonder if this casting will turn out as bad as the Superman Returns movie (they should have just signed the guy that has played Superman for years on TV and actually looks like Superman (Reeves).

By manticore at 3:03 PM ON 07/11/09

I too had my money on Nathan Fillon...actually if they ever do a live-action based on The Spectre,Nate would be great!

By yougotatvinthere at 3:31 PM ON 07/11/09

I don't see Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. He seems more like a Kyle Rayner to me.

By Mr. Morden at 3:44 PM ON 07/11/09

Should've given the part to Nathan Fillion! Too bad the studio didn't see the Youtube trailer for the GL movie, Nathan would've been great for the part. And no, Nathan is not too old to play the part. Ryan is a bit too young IMO and wouldn't have anywhere near the screen presence or wit that Nathan would've brought to the project!

By me at 4:23 PM ON 07/11/09

Good casting of Reynolds for Green Latern. He will deliver if the script is good.

By you at 6:44 PM ON 07/11/09

Give the guy a break!

At least let the film fail at the box office before cutting it to pieces ...

By greenjeans at 7:58 PM ON 07/11/09

"I just wonder if this casting will turn out as bad as the Superman Returns movie (they should have just signed the guy that has played Superman for years on TV and actually looks like Superman (Reeves)."

WB has been trying to get Tom Welling to play the adult Superman for years, and he's refused to do it every single time. He's been vocal about not wanting to do it. His costars have discussed it at length. The showrunners recently admitted that he still refuses to wear the suit. The whole reason Brandon Routh was cast as Superman was because Welling doesn't want the role. What do you want WB to do, waste all their time waiting for him to magically change his mind?

By koy at 9:15 PM ON 07/11/09

lets talk gambit. is it just me or about time a movie should be done.

By jdmimic at 9:57 PM ON 07/11/09

I rather liked Brandon Routh as Superman. I thought he did a great job. Too bad the script was horrible. I really wanted to like the movie, but stalker Superman and him picking up a mountain laced with kryptonite rather sunk it for me. While I question Ryan Reynolds as GL, I haven't really seen him do a serious part, so I will be willing to wait and see how he does. I am hoping he surprises me.

By admiral100 at 10:07 PM ON 07/11/09

Darn it! I was hoping Steve Martin would get this part. I thought he'd be excellent as the Green Lantern. Well, here's hoping he'll play some other superhero....

By wordwise at 10:47 PM ON 07/11/09

admiral100
Let's hope nobody in Hollywood reads your post. Some idiot's liable to think there is money to be made casting old comics as superheroes!

By lookn_4_stars at 11:45 PM ON 07/11/09

No clue who Ryan Reynolds is, but I can say that lifting a mountain made of kryptonite and falling back to Earth like Christ on the cross was as bad as any superhero movie has ever been. Between that and the putrid performances of Routh and Kate Bosworth made Superman Returns the worst of the current crop of SHMs (including Ang Lee's Hulk). What's even worse is that is that it was directed by the same man that gave us The Usual Suspects. What was Singer thinking?

By bookwy12m at 12:54 AM ON 07/12/09

Honestly, I think Reynolds would make a great GL Kyle Rayner. Not so sure about Hal Jordan. I'll keep an open mind, and wallet though.

By Clerkin at 1:21 AM ON 07/12/09

Nathan Fillion would have been the best choice in both appearance and acting style. Ryan Reynolds, however, has the box office draw to give GL what it deserves from the "norms" and would have been my second choice. The term "ScyFy" sucks!

By Lrdbowler at 1:44 AM ON 07/12/09

I guess this is good news considering who he was up against.

I was hoping that Nathan Fillion would get it. Also, in an interview with the guys from the SkyNext Podcast, Brian Austin Greene stated he wanted to be The Green Lantern. Brian who was playing Derek Reese in Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles said he heard casting was being done and he being a big fan of the comic had sent in a tape.

I like Nathan Fillion, Brian Austin Greene (who is great in Terminator), and Ryan Reynolds. Depending on the script, any of these guys could do an admirable job.

I do wish they'd used someone who wasn't the current "it" actor. Ryan has a few projects in the pipeline now, I am looking forward to him in a Deadpool movie and wanted to see a new Blade trilogy.

I am glad these comic book properties are so successful, it guarantees future films.

By allenwa69 at 3:05 AM ON 07/12/09

I think that He (Ryan Reynolds) will be perfect guy for Green Lantern. Wish He is the Best Luck!

And Hope that goes for second and third run the movies like "Iron Man" and "Spider Man" had big success to continue the same actor to play again?

Good LUCK, Ryan!

By jmeaobrien at 4:13 AM ON 07/12/09

!! I believe Ryan can pull it off just fine. He is a great action hero-- Lets see what happens!

By Joesketeer at 6:47 AM ON 07/12/09

Everyone wanted it to be Nathan. What the hell is wrong with these studios? Listen to the Internet, morons.

Also, Ryan as Deadpool was so boring.

By a different tim at 12:37 PM ON 07/12/09

Nathan Fillion needs to stop commenting and promoting himself on this site.

Ryan surprised the crap out of me when I saw him act serious and angry, it was just as good as his comic timing and delivery. Can't wait to see the film, it would be awesome if the studio treated it like the Dark Knight, more comic book films need that kind of attention from stuios to be taken seriously by the general public even if it's GL.

By lantern at 1:03 PM ON 07/12/09

i hate to be so blunt, but what the #@!$%#. they couldn't have made a bigger mistake casting ryan reynolds as the green lantern. i'm an avid marvel and dc fan and when i saw reynolds in wolverine:origins i almost spat out the half chewed popcorn in my mouth. thank god he had such a minor roll and they shaved his head and sealed his mouth for the second half of the movie. he is a comedian, but the comic (book) world should not be tainted by his acting.

By edward_m at 4:14 PM ON 07/12/09

I know everyone wanted Nathon to be GL, but lets be honest: how many, when they see the movie, would have been thinking, "Its Capt. Reynolds in tights!" every time he was on screen?

When Downey was first announced as Iron Man, I was one of the first to say, "Great....remember Clooney as Batman?" .

Boy was I wrong. So maybe this GL isn't going to be as bad as some are thinking. We're just going to have to play the wait and see game.

By nzjade at 4:21 PM ON 07/12/09

Awesome, Ryan Reynolds IS Green Lantern .... get use to it people!!!!! .... they're makin the movie ...

By captultra at 4:58 PM ON 07/12/09

I've seen/heard these same negative comments being made about Ryan before. 20 years ago when Michael Keaton was cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman. No one thought he could pull the role off as he had only done comedic roles up to that point. After the Movie came out almost everyone changed theier mind and were upset when the role was recast for the 3rd movie.

By hermy at 5:04 PM ON 07/12/09

i like Ryan reynolds.he has a successful movie out with the proposal.and most studios want a proven actor as the lead if there going to spend 100s of millions on a movie.who's going to be sinestro?good luck ryan

By ngodfather114 at 5:09 PM ON 07/12/09

Oh come on ryan is not a good choice for Hal Jordan. Maybe he can play Kyle but not Hal. I say David Boreanez can pull off Hal Jordan alot better than most right now. Hell he did the voice in the animated "new frontier" movie, and he actually looks more like he'll fit the roll better anyway.

By Red Mask at 6:14 PM ON 07/12/09

Ryan Reynolds won the lottery.

By M at 7:07 PM ON 07/12/09

It's depressing to think of the amount of money these total idiots in Hollywood make who make these decisions. Nathan Fillion would have been a good choice he's a good actor he has range. Jared Leto is a excellent actor, none of the others on the list impress. And please Justins nothing but a pretti-boi.

By hermy at 8:27 PM ON 07/12/09

as a big green lantern fan.and with blackest night coming out in the comic shops.it's going to be a big year for GL. i agree nathan fillion would be a great choice.but he's not a big enough star.for the none GL fans to want to see it to

By dirk at 8:35 PM ON 07/12/09

thank god it wasn't given to leto or timberlake, imagine one of those geeks as a super hero...ewww

By dirk at 8:39 PM ON 07/12/09

nathon fillion wasn't even considered you freakin losers, get a grip

By Marty B. at 10:16 PM ON 07/12/09

Thanks, dirk. I was wondering where all the Fillion buzz was coming from on this thread.

But Bradley Cooper was up for this? Only DC guy I can picture him playing would be like Booster Gold or something. Sorry, his Hangover role sticks too much. Put him in a Bourne movie in a supporting role, or maybe the next Bond one. Get him a bit dirty, less pretty, and then maybe we'll talk superheroes in a couple of years with him.

By T at 10:26 PM ON 07/12/09

I was hoping for Nathan Fillion also. Are they serious with Ryan Reynold? At least it wasn't Justin Timberlake. Why were they hell bent on someone young anyway? Hal Jordan had grey streaks in his hair. I love Green Lantern but I'm already thinking that I'm going to be disappointed.

By Sunny at 11:15 PM ON 07/12/09

Everybody get off the Nathon Fillon train, according to the article he wasn't even in the running for this role. I think it's great that Ryan Reynolds deserves the lead in an action movie. He is actually really good at something besides comedy. I thought he was really great at Amityville Horror. So before we start the hate-fest give the dude a chance.

By jmeaobrien at 1:13 AM ON 07/13/09

Gieve Ryan a chance-- Hes a good action figure-type

By appleasuce at 2:12 AM ON 07/13/09

Isn't from my recollection, Green Lantern, black, yea I know there are more "Green Lanterns" out there but the one that stays around Earth more black?

By Siriusred7 at 2:41 AM ON 07/13/09

I loved him in: Two Guys, A Girl, And A Pizza Place. He has a great dry sense of humor that should be useful for this role. People give him a chance.

By copacetic at 9:36 AM ON 07/13/09

To everyone complaining about this casting, just keep in mind that he may surprise you...about 20 years ago, a (then) well known comedic actor was cast to play the ultimate serious comic book hero and everyone was up in a tizzy about it. That movie went on to re-define the genre and he ended up being considered one of the best to land the role.

By Parallaxmjm at 11:14 AM ON 07/13/09

Yes, enough with the Fillion garbage, I don't understand why people can't accept the fact that he is TOO old to play a young Hal Jordan. Catherine Bell might have been an amazing Wonder Woman at one point, but now she is too old for the part.

And relating to the "black" GL, John Stewart, no, he is not the primary Earth GL despite the animated show. Hal Jordan has always been considered the "classic" GL,

Reynolds should do a good job. Based on the possible 3 choices they had left, this was a no-brainer to me. Good job, WB.

By Parallaxmjm at 11:21 AM ON 07/13/09

"I was hoping for Nathan Fillion also. Are they serious with Ryan Reynold? At least it wasn't Justin Timberlake. Why were they hell bent on someone young anyway? Hal Jordan had grey streaks in his hair. I love Green Lantern but I'm already thinking that I'm going to be disappointed. "

If you've been reading GL, you would know why he had the gray streaks. And they want someone young, because this is an origin story, the beginning of a possible franchise and Hal in the script is supposed to be around 28. Would they cast a 40 year old to start playing Superman or Batman? No. So why would they do that with Green Lantern?

By Old Guard at 1:10 PM ON 07/13/09

Hey, let's give Reynolds a chance. Think of it like this, he is the lesser evil of who we might have been stuck with. Let's cross our fingers. I'm actually thinking, well, hoping, he sits back and actually reads the current Green Lantern comic. If he does that, I think he will get what kind of man Hal Jordan is. Hal is not 'snarky'. He's cocky but he's also grounded. As the writer of Green Lantern, Geoff Jones put it, 'Hal Jordan is Indiana Jones with a power ring'. Reynolds goes with that, he should be all right. He doesn't have to do an impersonation of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, just attempt to catch the spirit. We'll see.
Still, it is hard for me to imagine, they are making an actual Green Lantern movie! Green Lantern. Wow. Never thought I'd see the day. Still wish they had considered Josh Duhamel for the part. But then you can't have everything you want.

By Neal at 2:20 PM ON 07/13/09

I don't know, I think he'd be a better fit as Guy Gardener.

By LT at 4:42 PM ON 07/13/09

If anything, have Mr. Reynolds die his hair red and have him as Guy Gardner. With his mouth and mannerisms, he'd be perfect to be Guy.

By aerynsboy at 11:37 PM ON 07/13/09

I still think David Boreanez would have made an excellent Hal Jordan/Green Lantern.

By AtomicBomb at 6:00 AM ON 07/14/09

Bah, he looks like he'd make a half decent guy gardener, but he's no Hal Jordan.
