Ridley Scott to direct Alien prequel film for Fox

Ridley Scott to direct \<i\>Alien\<\/i\> prequel film for Fox

Variety confirms a story, first reported by Collider.com, that Ridley Scott's company is developing a prequel to his classic sci-fi horror movie Alien, but with a few changes: Scott himself will direct, not Scott's protege, Carl Rinsch, and Jon Spaihts will write the script.

Here's how the trade paper reported it:

Spaihts got the job after pitching the studio and Scott Free, which will produce the film.

The film is set up to be a prequel to the groundbreaking 1979 film that Scott directed. It will precede that film, in which the crew of a commercial towing ship returning to Earth is awakened and sent to respond to a distress signal from a nearby planetoid. The crew discovers too late that the signal generated by an empty ship was meant to warn them.

The deal gives Fox another chance to keep the Alien franchise alive. There were three sequels to Scott's original, but it is the first time the director has set his mind on directing one.

Who is Jon Spaihts? He's a guy with a lot of sci-fi irons in the fire: Keanu Reeves is reportedly attached to his Warner Brothers script Shadow 19 and also hired Spaihts to write the space journey epic Passengers, which got Spaihts the meeting with Fox and Scott Free.

Spaihts is also reportedly writing Children of Mars for Disney and Scott Rudin, and he will follow by rewriting St. George and the Dragon for Sony and Red Wagon.

No... freakin'... way! Awesome! I wonder if Ridley Scott's decision to direct the prequel himself means he couldn't resist a really great script.

But I hope they don't change their minds again and Scott ends up not directing.

Finally! Here's hoping for a proper backstory!

Alien is still considered one of the greatest horror movies of all time thanks to a great script and Ridley Scott.

If Mr Scott is returning to the licence after all this time then I think its fair to say the script caught his attention and he wants to see this done properly, with all due respect to the writer.

Thats one ticket sold.

Please pleaseplease pleasepleaseplease LET THIS HAPPEN!

This is great news. Ridley Scott is, in my opinion, one of the best directors in Hollywood. I'm looking forward to this.

THANK GOD!

I have been waiting for this since... Well... As long as I can remember! Now if only Cameron will come on board to write ALIEN 5, and take us to the Xenomorph homeworld, I can die a happy man.

Same here mate. Certainly looking forward to this as the originator of Alien is finally at the helm. No one else can tell a better story.

By Yokozuka at 11:08 AM ON 07/31/09

Hmmm, but i wonder, what kind of backstory could it have?, i mean the ¨PREDATOR¨ and ¨AVP¨ movies offer that, beside that i don´t see anything happening at LV-426, or maybe somewhere else?

By Brady1541 at 12:27 PM ON 07/31/09

Yoko: Personally, I hope the story includes the 'Space Jockey' character/race for AT LEAST a portion of the film.

It would be interesting to end the movie with the Space Jockey's ship crashing on LV-426 to set up Alien.

Just a thought that I'm sure MANY others have had...lol.

By goodboy_stay at 12:51 PM ON 07/31/09

Unbelievable!

This is mind-bending. Never would I have thought in a million years Ridley would even consider coming back to his own creation.

This will be amazing!

Ah, but is HR Giger onboard?
The Space Jockey needs him.

By dwforsci at 5:31 PM ON 08/01/09

Plot synopsis sounds just like the first one.
If it's just a rehash of the first film, I don't think even Ridley Scoot can make it interesting.

By Melora at 10:38 PM ON 08/01/09

If you mean the plot synopsis in the article above, its meant to be the one for the original film, not the new film.

By Spot at 3:31 AM ON 08/02/09

He talked about wanting to make a prequel during the dvd commentary about the alien space ship that first crashed on the planet. I wonder if that's still what he has in mind. I would love to see that story!

By TheDocToRx at 11:13 AM ON 08/06/09

We need the Space Jockey story.....

By rstar0909 at 11:01 PM ON 08/07/09

The Alien Prequel Should Answer Many Outstanding Questions and Ridley Scott is the perfect director to answer them:

1. What is the background of the alien whose skeleton was discovered in the alien ship (could the ship be a earlier Predator transport vessel)

2. Why were the alien eggs onboard the alien vessel (once again a Predator transport that crashed landed on LV-426 could be the answer)

3. How come the crazy doctor/scientist robot malfunctioned (Scott could show that in fact the robot was preprogrammed to kill the crew if an alien race/organism was discovered to prevent the crew from revealing the information to the earth population/media.)

Never was into movies that made me jump or wonder what was lurking in the dark until I saw Scott’s Alien so I think I’m quite excited to see a prequel down by the man he made me want more.

By Magellan at 9:18 PM ON 08/11/09

I'm as thrilled as anyone that Ridley is back looking to do another movie. However I would really prefer that he re-imagined/rebooted Alien 3 instead, rather than do a prequel. Everybody knows Alien 3 is where things started to go wrong for the story - even David Fincher has practically disowned the whole film, so he probably wouldn't be offended if Ridley tried to rewrite it.

I don't really want to know all about the Space Jockey. One of the wonderful things about Alien was the questions it left UN-answered. Going back and telling that whole story will destroy the mystery and mystique of how the original Alien movie began. Certainly CGI Space Jockeys would be a terrible, terrible thing to watch.

The same thing applies to the story as applied to the creature itself. Ridley has famously said many times that while creating Alien, he tried to keep the creature concealed for as long as possible to increase the level of terror.

What you don't see, scares you more.

Likewise...
What we don't know, is more interesting to daydream about and more likely to have us discussing the film for decades afterward.

Is anyone happier now that they know exactly how Darth Vader grew up, with all his teen romance angst and petulant behaviour?
Or was it better when he was just an evil overlord whose precise origins were just a fable passed down by Obi Wan and Yoda?
I preferred the latter.

Lastly, to rstar0909 - the Alien story has NOTHING to do with Predators. I hate that Fox has mish-mashed the two together in it's crappy, childish sequels. And so does Ridley Scott and James Cameron (search Youtube for their opinions of the AVP movies). So don't expect to see any silly Predator references.

The Alien and the Space Jockey are largely the nightmare visions of HR Giger. Whatever else we are forced to learn about them, should at least stem purely from that original mindset. So if Ridley *really* wants to go through with this, he'd better get on the phone to Mr Giger now. They are both getting very old. They are probably only going to have one chance, and there is no time to waste, in getting this new film to look *right*.

If you watch Alien and pay attention to the details you will notice something. On the alien space craft that had crash landed on LV-426 there is a mummified alien species with its chest bones broken outward. If you look at the face it looks exactly like a mummified predator. It even has the dreads, and mandibles around its mouth. Perhaps Ridley didn't intend to have predators in his movie, but the person who designed the creatures in his movies decided to use the same idea twice.
