Robert Rodriguez, who is writing and producing Predators, confirmed to
Ain't It Cool News that Nimrod Antal will direct the movie, and he also offered up a few details about the film, which is supposed to reboot the franchise and move it as far away as possible from the Aliens vs. Predator movies.
Here's what Rodriguez told AICN's Harry Knowles about the story:
I can't go too much into the story right now, because we're still writing. But it still involves a very intense group of people stranded on a Predator planet discovering unspeakable horrors (that are not always from outside their group). So like the original movie, the title does have a double meaning. Aliens was a different take on the Alien idea, and an original movie in its own right, and that's what we want to do with this.
As for Antal (Kontroll), Rodriguez said this:
First of all, on a personal level I found him to be an outstanding presence, a great communicator full of ideas, and upon meeting him you can immediately understand how he is able to wrangle cast and crew and get the best out of everyone. I always loved Kontroll, where he proved himself to be a very resourceful and original filmmaker. When I saw Armored, I could tell he's also great with action and has a keen eye for casting. He reminded me of Quentin [Tarantino] with how he was able to work with a group of very strong, singular actor talents and make it look effortless. I know he'll be able to get the most out of what we want to be an outstanding cast. We really want to go with a character-driven action movie, because that's what we all remember about the original Predator, and we want to take it even further with this.

As a citizen of Hungary, I'm fairly happy with this decision (I've really loved Nimrod's previous movie "Kontroll"), however, this job won't be easy... we'll see, who knows.

every time they do a remake...it makes me shutter.....it won't be as good as the original...just because the have new technology for SF..doesn't mean you have to make a newer version of an already great movie.,,,ie(halloween, friday 13,last house, and the list goes on......and on...no orginal ideas in hollywood any more.....remakes,lousy sequels,or stealing from asian or european movies.

I am actually for this movie. I don't really consider this a reboot/remake, because their not just bringing a Predator to Earth again. They plan to do it like Aliens and have a team get stranded on the Predator home world.(although that probably wasn't the Alien home world since there was only a single ship.)
This is a take on Predator we've never seen before. I thought the first AVP was cool, in that, it gave us an inside look of the life of a predator.
There is a lot of new stuff they can bring into this, possibly giving us a trilogy. I think from the interview, it shows that they are trying to capture the Aliens tone. If so, we could have something great.

I wish everyone in all of the sites I go to would please stop calling this a remake. In a lot of his interviews Rodriguez has stated that this movie will be a pre-quel. I love Rodriguez's movies, especially Planet Terror. I have faith in him that he'll do a good job with this.

I liked all of the Predator movies except for the very last one which was a big disappointment. I liked AvP and never understood why so many didn't. If they can do another Predator film that grabs you like the first then it will be a success. They really need great writers and the ability to get a believable but fantastic tale going. It will be this alone that makes the movie. They will always be able to find good actors. I'm hoping it will be good and not another disappointment.
