Our Australian sister site SCI FI TV reports a rumor that preproduction is gearing up for George Lucas' proposed live-action Star Wars series, which is to be shot Down Under.
The site, citing anonymous sources, adds that the show is assembling high-quality writers from the Aussie TV industry, including writers from Love My Way and Secret Life of Us, who have been approached by Lucas' longtime producer Rick McCallum.
The as-yet-untitled series is supposedly set to debut in 2010, though there has been no word of a distributor yet. The series will reportedly be set between the eras of Star Wars: Episode III—Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV—A New Hope and will not feature any major characters from the film series.

why does everything they do lately got to be set between episode 3 & 4. why cant they set it in a different timeframe so that they wont be stuck with canon & then do something completely fresh. kinda like star trek TNG & with the borg. The borg in their prime was good tv.

Looks interesting, and a vote of confidence in the Aus Tv Industry (which hasnt really produced any scifi since farscape)
By saikiba at 3:52 AM ON 07/02/09
He should base it in the new republic era.
By Facepalm at 4:25 AM ON 07/02/09
So on top of a prequel trilogy spoiling ever good plot twist of the original trilogy, we get another series spoiling even more?
Hey, as much as I'd like to know why Vader was so adamant to Bobba Feet about "No disintegrations", I think I am going to pass here.
By Cheapshot at 9:19 AM ON 07/02/09
Why are you all complaining? Star Wars is the best sci fi movie ever made, and anything scifi as a series is welcomed right now.
The current offerings are mostly junk. We could use a show that has the potential to go on for a decade or more.
By Blue at 9:50 AM ON 07/02/09
Ahem. Star Wars isn't sci-fi. It's fantasy. Stick that in your pipe.
By SighFighGuy at 9:58 AM ON 07/02/09
Definitely should be in the New Republic era. Although this show will probably get the Friday night death slot on FOX and then Lucas will want to write 2 episodes where Darth Maul goes back in time and helps the Sith win the Old Republic wars and thereby ruins everything we know about the Star Wars universe.
By suprememango at 10:39 AM ON 07/02/09
The reason for the timeline is simply George Lucas. While he acknowledges the Expanded Universe his vision is strictly between Phantom Menace and Return or the Jedi. I think the tv series will be interesting. My Jedi senses tell me smugglers on a ship secretly working for Mon Mothma and the Rebellion. Oh wait, was that a spoiler. *waves hand* You never read any post by Supreme Mango.
By DJ Jarak at 10:49 AM ON 07/02/09
I also heard that the series won't have any Jedi or Sith either. Just rebels and imperial troops and some bounty hunters. Lame! I wanna see some lightsaber action, dammit!!!
By Praetor Shinzon II at 11:14 AM ON 07/02/09
I'll wait and see. the idea of a Mark Hamill/Luke Skywalker as an OBI WAN mentor might be cool-after
this runs its course; and no, no Han Solo or Chubacca.
Leia/Carrie Fisher as a Matron Jedi occasionally.
Hey, it's fantasy, right? I can fantasize all I want.
By MetalPause at 1:11 PM ON 07/02/09
I can not believe that I am posting this, but I am so NOT excited about this at all, and I consider myself to be a HUGE fan.
I agree... Set it AFTER ep VI.
By Jeff77042 at 1:16 PM ON 07/02/09
DJ Jarak, I agree with you. My "dream" _Star Wars_ TV series would pick up right where Episode-3 left off. It would be about Darth Vader hunting down the remaining 200-300 Jedi, whatever the number is, and developing as a sith-apprentice. Every 3rd or 4th episode he'd finally "corner" one (or sometimes 2 or 3) of the remaining Jedi and they'd fight to the bitter end.
Sub-plots would include the remaining Jedi trying to rally and stage a counter-coup and the rebellion forming; an occational glimpse of young Luke & Leia and their back-story. Lots of nubile young princesses in gold-bikinis; *cough*. That's my $0.02.

Two words: Forced Alliance.
By Curt at 5:30 PM ON 07/02/09
If I had to pick a time for this series it would be way back in the Old Republic time or maybe even earlier. Going that far back lets them have the same universe but frees them from all the canon characters.
By mredder4 at 8:27 PM ON 07/02/09
I'll say what you fanboys seem incapable of admitting: Star Wars is played out. The reason that it can't be set after the 6 episode is that all the books are considered canon, and they cover decades worth of time. Many of the video games cover the most interesting period of history BEFORE the movies, so that's done too. Lucas' only option is the between time, but because they probably want to make the series on the cheap, that means no Jedi (or their mindtricks), no lightsabers, and certainly no wire-based jumping/fighting action.
The original trilogy was awesome, the video games were kick-ass, and everything else is substandard. Face it already, the series won't be the exception.
By pheonyx74 at 8:44 PM ON 07/02/09
This show, because it's potential to be a good show will get shoved into a show killing timeslot with poor marketing by the network it is picked up by all so that the network can cancel it for another crappy REALITY tv show. This will never make it past the first season. Not due to lack of fans but because of sabotage by the networks. Look at what happened to TSCC and Moonlight. Both had higher ratings than Dollhouse but both canceled after one season. But Dollhouse got a second.

How about re-making the original movie with Shia LaBoef as Luke & Megan Fox & Leia? John Goodman can be Jabba the Hut.

So annoying. If we know the beginning, beginning of the middle, middle of the middle, and end of the middle, why do the folks as LucasFilm think we want more of the middle.
Here's a concept I'll be "no one" ever thought of:
How about what happens AFTER Jedi?
It's about "revolutionary" a concept as Fox listening to their fan-base and realizing that maybe, just maybe, X4-x6 might be what the fans really want rather than craptastic prequels and reboots.
By Master Miend at 10:36 PM ON 07/04/09
What I am dying to see would be Yoda, how he became a Jedi during them time when they believed that the "last Sith" was defeated. The re-ascension of the Jedi. I bet that Yoda was deeply involved, although nothing is mentioned in the movies. A young Yoda, learning under and fighting along side his Master, defeating Sith... That would be great. There is a whole entire story to be told, including the source of the ancient prophecy.
Maybe his Master is the Sith. He seemed to have intimate knowledge of the treachery of the Sith...

I don't have a problem with the stories being set between episodes 3 and 4. It is a BIG galaxy, with literally trillions of sentient inhabitants on thousands of worlds and habitats. Multiply that by 19-20 years worth of time, and there is an endless amount of story telling that can be done.
With this sort of scope, we don't have to worry about "spoilers," what we know happens in the overall story of the galaxy, as we are now watching on a much smaller scale, the personal scale.
I'd prefer the show to be more about bounty hunters, especially Boba Fett, hunting down the early rebels and the few remaining Jedi (which if I recall from the EU stuff accounted for more Jedi tracked down than Vader did).
As it is, telling stories about the individuals that were among the earliest members of the proto- Alliance (to Restore the Republic) could work out. Sure, I too would love to see lightsaber action, but honestly, A New Hope is one of the best of the SW movies, but has pretty much the LEAST lightsaber screen time.
If this show lasts more than a season (heck, it could happen in the first season even), I'm pretty sure Lucas will give us SOME lightsabers, and SOME Jedi action, despite what the early word from LucasArts tells us.

I agree Lucas is waisting his perfect opportunity with the amount of story in the Expanded Universe. Make Star Wars 7,8,9. This is a waste of time.
By m0nk3y at 8:55 PM ON 07/06/09
AWESOME!!! can't wait. I'm so sick of the new era star wars stuff that has been ruining the original trilogy. Anything set in the more realistic rebellion era, with less lame jedi garbage, is going to be much better.
By LadyStarr at 3:33 PM ON 07/08/09
The last thing I heard last year, was that this was going to be base on an X-Wing squadron, possibly Wedge's. But all could have changed for now. I just hope that the quality and story lines are well done. Good SciFi is so hard to find these days. No more BSG on TV.
By ScalarX at 2:53 AM ON 07/18/09
Can't wait for this. I've been dreaming of a live-action Star Wars story since the rumors about Clone Wars surfaced.
Why people are against this is a mystery to me. From a purist perspective, Star Wars has veered away from the original themes since Episode 5. (There is no such thing as luck)(A more civilized age...)
I hope it's traveling adventurers like in KOTOR, or the beginnings of the Alliance, using Bail Organa, Mon Mothma and Garm Bel Iblis, like in Force Unleashed.
My two cents...
By ScalarX at 3:03 AM ON 07/18/09
MORE JAR_JAR. Just so you'd whiners can finally off yourselves.
AND you vampire fetishers can't have dark gloomy and moody anymore. It ruins TV and film. So go and play on the freeway.
AND BSG was the worst series in the history of TV. With Starbuck the boy-girl's terrible acting, and the worst, double-digit-IQ crew since that submarine movie with Kelsey Grammer. Dam BSG was HORRIBLE.
Sorry for the rant. Didn't see my nice comment so there.

i didn't know about the elves or dragons (in the movies) either but regardless of that it's still technically fantasy because of the force.
i wish they made the movie during the old republic times but then again i've only read darth bane 1 and 2 and played kotor 1 and 2 so i don't know if i would like the new republic time or not. i am however sick and tired of phantom menace-return of the jedi time period. honestly, it's been done more times than necessary. i understand that there's countless stories (more or less) in any time period but i'm just sick of it, especially since i was exited the last time i heard of a new star wars movie coming out. i was less excited when i found out it was about the clone wars and appalled when i actually witnessed that trash. the other thing that turns me off to this is that it's a tv show but i'll still give it a chance just in case i'm wrong about it.
By sam at 3:41 AM ON 09/02/09
The whole Jedi extermination should be in this. After all that's what happened and Palpatine let a lot of bounty hunters do this part, as well as force sensitives like the Emperor's Hand. I say it'll be good stuff.
By Cory Morr at 6:14 PM ON 09/24/09
I think the reason why George Pukas doesn't want to have Darth Vader in the tv show is because Lucas doesn't want to pay Hayden Christensen to come back as Vader in the suit. Hayden even said during the making of Episode III-Revenge of the Sith that he had trouble breathing when wearing the Vader suit. He also claimed it was heavy and hard to to walk around in.
By ammo at 1:44 PM ON 10/02/09
This should be fantastic; especially if they focus on Quinlan Vos gone into hiding and the Bounty Hunters mopping up what Vader couldn't due to the Emperor's other projects. I suspect there will be Jedi; but they will be hiding their powers. If it is character-driven with a good story, it will add a new layer of depth to the story of the Star Wars Universe. At some point, I'd really like to see those Bothan spies in action.

When I heard that there would be a live-action TV series, I immediately thought of the Karen Traviss book series about the clone troopers. Her book, "Order 66" falls right at the beginning of the period that this show will supposedly cover, and Kal Skirata and the freed clone commandos are extremely compelling characters. They even have two "fallen" Jedi in their group. They could use this group as a springboard for development of the rebel alliance infrastructure...I could go on and on, but you get the point. George, if you're reading this, please consider it!
