Sam Raimi to direct World of Warcraft movie

Sam Raimi to direct \<i\>World of Warcraft\<\/i\> movie

Forget Spider-Man: Director Sam Raimi has signed on to direct Warcraft, the live-action film adaptation of the fantasy MMORPG World of Warcraft, Variety reported:

Legendary Pictures and vidgame publisher Blizzard Entertainment are mounting the film, and Warner Bros. will co-finance and distribute. The team boasts an impressive pedigree: In addition to the director of Spider-Man, the partners have added The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven to the creative mix.

The plan is for Raimi to supervise development of Warcraft and shoot the picture after he completes work on Spider-Man 4, which gets under way early next year for Columbia Pictures. ...

The Warcraft universe features an epic conflict between the Horde and the Alliance.

So ... how would this work, exactly? Do audience members get to pick their avatars and go on quests? Can audience members in one theater form a guild with those in other theaters? And can Drag Me to Hell's Raimi be the wizard who breaks the curse of crappy video-game-based movies?

Sam Raimi? Well THIS is certainly a surprise. I must say I'm going to be keeping a very close eye on this one... Just as long as it's better than Spider-Man 3, I'll be happy.

Wonder how he's going to form a movie around masses of barely literate kiddies arguing and complaining about digital loot, e-peen and how the game is still too hard for them.

By antodav at 2:20 AM ON 07/22/09

Seems like miscommunication happened somewhere between the studio, Variety, and Sci-Fi.com. There is World of Warcraft, which is an MMORPG, and then there's WARCRAFT, which is just a standard RPG. I can see them making a movie out of Warcraft, just as I can see a movie made out of The Legend of Zelda, Final Fantasy, or The Elder Scrolls. WORLD of Warcraft, not so much.

Anyway, better Sam Raimi than Peter Jackson. I hated all three LOTR movies and if he'd been making this one I wouldn't waste my time. Now, well, at least there's a chance.

Considering what Raimi did with the TV adaption of Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series (AKA Legend of the Seeker) I wont be expecting much to come of this. While the opening scenes sparked high promise via the sleek polished action scenes, the story line itself fell all too short of the books, as is so often the case. Still, my 10 year old daughter loves the show, so that's something. I look forward to having her read the books when she's old enough.

Yeah, there WERE three other games before the monolith that is World Of WarCraft came into being. I like the game, I play it for the story, mostly, but I've got friends who scorn or say I'll be lost to infantile endless gameplay.

A movie? Awesome. They've been saying it's on the horizon for a while, though there were rumors they were going to try for a 3D-animated piece, with all the production they'd done from the cinematics. (My industry bias thinks a 2d movie would be awesome, but it's not the obvious choice.)

I hope it's well done, but I wonder what material they'll use. There's enough plot and drama for a LotR-esque epic, but I'm betting somehow they'll try to fit multiple games worth of backstory into a single film. (Maybe leave hooks for sequels?).

By sparksm at 3:33 AM ON 07/22/09

I agree with warlock, this movie has potential with all the content and story the game has if they do it right and not try to stuff everything into one movie. Perhaps take the mythology and create a completely separate story to the game so it does not feel like it is missing bits.

Maybe even do it as a trilogy; first all about the alliance and their struggle, the second about the horde and the third one with a climatic battle for control of the realm. Viewers can get to decided who wins with a vote...hehe :)

Wow...it must be so...horrble...to be so..so ALOOOOOOONE in the world.

Just kiddinn' with ya partner...but c'mon now...REALLY?!?

It's amazing how the world of warcraft fan base is thought to be just pimply faced teenagers and preteens. There is a HUGE amount of working, sucessful adults that play this game and keep up with it's story line. Of course we're all dorks, heck most wow players were trekkies, tolkienites and wanna-be jedis before we got into this game. I certianly look forward to this movie almost as much as i look forward to Del Toro's Hobbit.

By SciFiFan at 5:07 AM ON 07/22/09

Most people I know in the game have kids of their own etc, it just people like Tarislar that like to attack something really popular to make up for their sad lives.

antodav let me guess your one of those "omg Gandalf's beard was three shades darker in the books!! guys huh? That and your yet another example of what I just said, attacking something that is popular in order to justify your sad little life.

On to the movie, it still a game being made into a movie so I'm having horrible flashbacks of all the games to movies.. As long as I see gold farmers get killed in the move though I'll be happy.

Why is every film site in the entire world unable to get this right?

It's a WarCraft film, not a World of WarCraft film. It's not an adaptation of the MMORPG. The WarCraft IP has existed as an RTS since the mid '90s.

As for how the film will work, the WarCraft universe has a rich and detailed history, and there are three story-based WarCraft RTS games. It won't be difficult to pluck a 2 hour story out of all of that.

By CptOblivious at 8:13 AM ON 07/22/09

This should be good, as long as he puts....... Leeeeeeeeeeerrrrooooooooooooyyyyyyy Jenkins in the movie!!!

By wth at 8:19 AM ON 07/22/09

Are all of you people morons?

Firstly, Warcraft and World of Warcraft are one and the same. Same lore, Same universe and Same everything. WARCRAFT is not an RPG as a previous poster stated. Warcraft is an RTS. And a movie wouldn't even be on the books if it wasn't for the success of World of Warcraft. And to the poster "ASFM", it IS a Warcraft film, and it is a World of Warcraft film. It is an adaptation of the entire franchise.

Morons all of you,

By a different tim at 9:40 AM ON 07/22/09

As long as Blizzard are heavily involved and consulted in the making of this film than I think it will be fine.

By Artemis at 9:42 AM ON 07/22/09

Good move on Legendary's part. This film will make huge money and potentially launch a very profitable franchise for them.

By Orion at 10:06 AM ON 07/22/09

"Are all of you people morons?"

I find it so sad that people either have nothing better to do than call people names or they lack the ability to respect other's who might have a different opinion than their own. Can't we rather have a respectful conversation discussing why you think your point of view is accurate? I guess that is just a pipe dream or science fiction itself ...

I also am really excited about the prospects of this movie but I will hold my comments until I have more information... Like who's starring in it, plot line, etc. But I definitely think it is a great idea!

By Lrdbowler at 10:43 AM ON 07/22/09

I had some issues with LoTR, but I enjoyed all three films immensely.

I think Jackson did a great job. I also liked King Kong, although I did feel it was missing something.

I would trust Sam Raimi, since he has done well with Spider-Man.

I hope they do this property justice, as I do with the rumor of a forthcoming Shannara Movie and/or Magic Kingdom for Sale/Sold by Terry Brooks.

The technology is finally here to do these fantastical properties.

By ghengisbob at 12:47 PM ON 07/22/09

When i first heard about a WoW movie and it's Alliance flavored story, I was nonplussed. Sam Raimi at the helm gives it a chance of being more balanced. 90 minutes of maxed out Allies knocking the crap out of lowbies at Crossroads, while accurate, is not especially entertaining. That film may as well have Chuck Norris as Varian- I might watch it on Syfy if there are no good infomercials on.
I could be something great, and I hope it is. To all the haters out there, unless your leisure activities include curing cancer, chill out please.

By oddball at 5:18 PM ON 07/22/09

If Arthas is going to be in the movie Vladimir Kulich should play him. He played in 13th warrior and has the right look and voice for the character.

By MaryAnn254 at 8:30 PM ON 07/22/09

Sam Raimi did a good job with Spiderman. If the film is based upon World of Warcraft, and if one of the many complex story lines in the game is chosen for the movie, I'm sure it will be a delight. There is the potential for it to be as good as LOTR. Let's just hope we don't get another Legend of the Seeker.

By Jake at 12:32 AM ON 07/23/09

This disgusts and disturbs me on so many levels I don't even know where to start; I'd cry if I weren't so busy being physically ill over the thought that Sam Raimi would allow himself to be involved with this impending cinematic abortion. I can only pray that this is a belated April Fool's joke. In poor taste.

By Jake at 12:41 AM ON 07/23/09

Oh, and before anyone decides to start a flame war after me, don't. I am not going to change my opinion of either WoW (I shudder and die a little inside every time I hear that), a WoW movie, or those that have wasted enough money and time to make a mediocre MMO popular enough to spawn a movie. And I am NOT looking for any support from others.

By runescape gold at 10:44 PM ON 07/23/09

I love this idea. He can bring the awesome where there has not been awesome before... a video game adaptation.

By runespear40 at 4:04 PM ON 07/29/09

I wish that blizzard had tried a animated version first
as there shorts in wow are very good and with the
right storyline and voice overs it could have really
sold. Live action will be harder to bring out the feel
of the different classes.

By wow strategy guide at 3:43 AM ON 01/20/10

I’ve heard that Blizzard projected budget for this movie is 100 Million USD. This being direct by Sam Raimi who directed the Spider Man series, and Evil Dead. Having this budget and veteran director, for sure this will be a hit movie to watch for. I’m really excited to watch the first high quality movie adapted in a video game.
