Syfy unveiled in New York ceremonies today

Syfy unveiled in New York ceremonies today

SCI FI is officially Syfy.

SCI FI—which began as SCI FI Channel back in 1992—morphed into Syfy today, and the new branding initiative was launched this morning with the opening of the Syfy Imagination Park at Rockefeller Center in New York City. Syfy Imagination Park features computers, television screens, seating and interactive set pieces—including a giant View-Master and a super-sized lollipop—inspired by the two-minute Syfy brand film, "House of Imagination."

Josh Gates, host of Syfy's reality program Destination Truth, spoke briefly about Syfy before turning the microphone over to Dave Howe, Syfy's president. Howe offered additional details before introducing Eureka star Joe Morton, as well as Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelly, stars of Warehouse 13, the first new series to debut under the Syfy banner. Cheers filled the air when it was revealed that Syfy will offer free "Wyfy by Syfy" at Rockefeller Center starting today and later this summer at other Manhattan pedestrian hot spots.

Following the ceremonies, SCI FI Wire—which can be found at scifiwire.com and will keep its name—spoke to Howe about the ways in which the name change broadens the company's horizons as a media destination for imagination-based entertainment.

"I think it's a great opportunity for people who don't think they like sci-fi/fantasy to come check us out," Howe said. "It opens us up to a whole new audience. It says to people that we're now no longer just the literal sci-fi."

Howe described Warehouse 13 as "absolutely in the sweet spot" in terms of fitting the Syfy philosophy. The show, which premieres tonight with a two-hour pilot starting at 9 p.m. ET/PT, "has two very relatable lead characters [McClintock and Kelly], ... investigators assigned to this warehouse in the middle of nowhere that's full of these crates that contain objects with special powers," Howe said. "And it's their job to figure out what those powers are and to figure out how to prevent them from ruining the world's day, which is the promo line."

Howe added: "What's great about it is that it's set in the here and now, it's very human, and it has a great sense of humor. It's a really fun Da Vinci Code/Raiders of the Lost Ark action-adventure. So it's smart, and it's also fun, which is exactly the kind of show we're after [for Syfy]."

Cant you people just put some classic stuff on tv again,
Planet of the apes, Lost in space, night of the comet?
I can hardly even stand what this channel has become in the last few years. And you made for tv movies are all really bad!
How about some commercial free presentations, something classy. it is really hard to watch an action adventure horror scifi film with commercial breaks. the lame syfy name change doesn't fix what has been wrong with this chanel for a long time.

By Will at 5:38 PM ON 07/07/09

And - Just WHAT WAS WRONG With "SCI-FI"?!?
As A Science Fiction Reader & Watcher, Even
Though SF Sounded More Mature and Sophis-
ticated---I OWNED SCI-FI!!! And, By The Way,
A-L-W-A-Y-S Will!!!!! However, No Hard Feelings
and MUCH Success and GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

By Troyce at 5:41 PM ON 07/07/09

I'm sorry, but syfy, or Syfyllus Channel as I call it now, is a lame name. They obviously have a low opinion of sci fi fans (notice introducing wrestling). They stopped covering SF cons years ago, and have little news of the field. Instead, we have their sorry movies on Saturday nights.

By Dethlok at 5:45 PM ON 07/07/09

Couldn't agree with you more Chris, I loved this channel for years and most of the time my dial never changed from it. Then suddenly wrestling became science fiction? News to me.. Wrestling is fiction, sure, but most definitely NOT Sci Fi. The programming has gotten weaker and weaker and those of us with a love for sci fi now really have no where to turn unless we happen to catch a old flick on one of the other networks. What a disappointment this is! SyFy... let's become weak and bow to the masses for more viewers... typical corporate mentality, numbers, numbers, numbers... :( RIP Sci Fi Channel, sad to see you go.

By BestBrainsInc at 5:53 PM ON 07/07/09

Uh, SCI FI Channel premiered on September 24th, *1992*, not 1982, guys. Fact checker, where are you?!

By Tokrath at 5:56 PM ON 07/07/09

The whole reason they did this is they can't trade mark sci-fi. So they can't sell all kinds of crap with there logo on it. But there new Syfy is something you can be sure they will slap there logo all over to try to sell.

This network that once was about the fans and the tv is now about the money. Wrestling is money so slap it on there. That is about all they stand for anymore. The new logo should be $yfy.

By Dabeeman at 6:15 PM ON 07/07/09

Sorry, the new name suck.... I would SF or Old name..

I would talk more, but I had a stroke... Aphasia.

By oldscififan at 6:17 PM ON 07/07/09

oh give me a break! I was ticked-off last night when I sat down with my dinner for my regular Monday-night-with-Next-Generation... only to find repeats of films I've already seen at least once and didn't care to watch again. And now I can't even find a programming schedule to figure out where they're putting such staples. I know, cater to the marketing gurus - but this is one long-time viewer who has just about had it with this game-playing and jerking loyal viewers around.

By sfjoe94114 at 6:18 PM ON 07/07/09

I am so disappointed. What a waste of money in the middle of the great recession. They could have paid for scholarships for sci-fi artists or something. I think this will allienate allot of their audience.

I am sad indded.

By Rob at 6:19 PM ON 07/07/09

Why don't you guys listen? SyFy is the dumbest name ever made. 99.9% of posts about the subject agree.

By Slander at 6:20 PM ON 07/07/09

Ugh. Warehouse 13 looks fun, but I think I'll catch it on Hulu rather than deal with having this lame new name and slogan shoved down my throat for an hour.

By Alex at 6:20 PM ON 07/07/09

Congratulations SyFy ! ! ! (although I'll miss the old sci fi planet logo)

By AngryJonny at 6:26 PM ON 07/07/09

Wow, that's the saddest spectacle. I feel bad for everyone forced to be involved in this, except for Howe.

By dwayne at 6:30 PM ON 07/07/09

Syfy is really sucking wind when they show National Treasure.

By Symphonitron at 6:33 PM ON 07/07/09

So, I don't get it. What facilitated the branding change, and what progress will it make? Most of their programming isn't "science fiction" it's fantasy (and fantasy-horror). Battlestar Galactica was by far the best show they ever produced, and although that would be heavily considered science fiction, Moore and fans refer to it as modern "space opera" which is actually fantasy disguised as science fiction. Well the lines are blurry, but back to my point... What does SyFy do for them? If they're going to rebrand they should have REBRANDED... Call themselves, I don't know, the "Quantum channel" ("Q"), or something that sounds mysterious and both techie and magical that captures a singularity of all things imaginative and speculative. (With the exception of wrestling... I have NO idea what this is doing in their lineup. That's just nonsense.)

By Truth at 6:40 PM ON 07/07/09

Sci-Fi was perfect. It described what you were, and your fan base all in one neat little package. Now, in some lame corporate attempt at being hip, you are going to loose your core audience.

It reminds me of Spike TV, or WE. That is a great marketing strategy, telling half of your potential audience your not welcome for reasons of chromosomal bias. Just like this is telling loyal to a fault science fiction fans your trying to make things cool. When is the last time you were at a Trek convention? Hip and cool are not important. Great stories that tickle our morals, and feeds our intellect are what most science fiction fans want. Substance over style SyFy.

Not like your listening, if you were you would not have started deleting posts.....Nice job BTW blocking my ID. Good thing for me I know my way around a PC. Its Tear Em Up.....

By maxwell at 6:45 PM ON 07/07/09

For me, it is all about the content. As long as SyFy continues to make shows that I want to watch, I don't care what the name is.

I loved BSG, really enjoy Eureka, and can't wait for Warehouse 13 to start tonight... So I am happy that SciFi has made money, because it allows them to make more of the shows that I want to see.

In my opinion, I like the direction of the new network (even if the name is a little dicey) and I wish everyone at SyFy the best of luck. Hope it works out for you guys.

By ringlordscifi at 6:46 PM ON 07/07/09

eversince this channel got bought by nbc this channel went to the dogs.with the exception of tinman and few other programs. bring back what we the people want. we want quality programs. we want the classics. and bring back the morning animation block for the kids.

By goodguy at 7:00 PM ON 07/07/09

Howe added: "What's great about it is that it's set in the here and now, it's very human, and it has a great sense of humor. It's a really fun Da Vinci Code/Raiders of the Lost Ark action-adventure. So it's smart, and it's also fun, which is exactly the kind of show we're after [for Syfy]."

So Mr Howe once again insults anyone that like stories is a timeline other than TODAY, no historic settings, no future settings....JUST TODAY...how boring can you get. Most folks like to escape to somewhere other than TODAY when we watch other than mainstream Network TV. Maybe he needs to go to NBC and finish killing that channel. Maybe he will agter he is finished destroying Science Fiction on cable.

By bob the builder at 7:00 PM ON 07/07/09

Thanks for changing the name of the channel. i hated the fact that SciFi was being used to show wrestling, reality tv shows and a ghost hunting show that Helen Keller must write the script for. Only about 2-5% of your "original" programming actually was worth a damn. Where as the rest was just making a mockery of the SciFi label. So thanks for changing the name to SyFy that way it reflects the quality of your current programming.(Which by the way is as open and diverse as the rest of the failing cable network channels that think becoming like all the others is going to fix ratings.)

By Spiffy Sucks at 7:04 PM ON 07/07/09

Spiffy is trying to be so hip and cool they can't see how bad they suck.

By srmarti at 7:04 PM ON 07/07/09

When I saw the SyFy announcements my reaction was "Boy, that's really stupid" What sort of overpaid moron thought that was a good idea? Makes about as much sense as wrestling on the Sci-Fi or Syfy channel. Gee, what channel is wrestling on? Oh, I know the Science Fiction channel. What's next ? Oprah? Maybe you can start midday soaps or game shows.

Bet somebody really agonized and put a huge amount of effort into this stupid change. That's both sad and scary.

By Wendynotes at 7:06 PM ON 07/07/09

Ok the name change is very moronic and an affront to all Science Fiction fans. Sci-Fi channel has had Stupid wrestling for a long time and the new reality series is not Sci-Fi but pabulum. I also am offended to have Horror lumped into Scifi genre. I have been turning to G4 for coverage of Sci-Fi Conventions.
I am looking for new original Sci-Fi series or decently written movies not B movies. I have had to turn to BBC to find part of my fix. Please keep writing new stuff and do not Dumb down Sci-Fi.

By goodguy13 at 7:14 PM ON 07/07/09

I think it's a great opportunity for people who don't think they like sci-fi/fantasy to come check us out," Howe said. "It opens us up to a whole new audience. It says to people that we're now no longer the literal sci-fi."

Great, no more literal Scifi, just well I am not sure the program say Warehouse 13 is a dramatic occult comedy. That is really going to be loved by former core viewers

By BarbS at 7:15 PM ON 07/07/09

It looks like this weeks schedule is an exception. Not the norm (all the movies) Next week looks like more "Normal" I enjoy my Lost/Atlantis/SG1 afternoons and Next Gen on Monday Nights. Glad to see that's not been scrapped.

By BackStJoe at 7:16 PM ON 07/07/09

Just a completely pointless move...what a waste of money too. Heck, I bet you could have funded a Farscape telefilm for what this "re-branding" cost. I guess we'll see if the ratings come up or if you just hit level with Sci-Fi.

By Tarc at 7:16 PM ON 07/07/09

I HATE the new branding Syfy - 'the siffy' sucks. Really. Really. Badly. I mean seriously, did the PR department run out of things to do last year? The name is terrible and the reasoning is ludicrous.

By Omen at 7:16 PM ON 07/07/09

What that an Anomaly had appeared followed by Raptors:-)

By tidalwarrior at 7:21 PM ON 07/07/09

There needs to be drug tests done at the
Sci-Fi headquarters. Sorry, SyFy. Is there a special meaning behind it? Science for you, Fiction for you? Do I need to read the article a second time in case I missed something?

By Nici at 7:24 PM ON 07/07/09

I have not read all the comments but I do agree with some one you. I love the SciFi Channel but the programming in the last three or four years has sucked real bad. I have enjoyed some of the new series but I am so sick and tired of all the movies they show on the weekends. How many more times can I watch shark movies, snakes movies, etc etc They even fill the spots with old series and after awhile as much as I liked them they become boring. There is way too much SciFi stuff out there to keep showing the same ole stuff week after week after week. I hope this change means better programming.

By scott at 7:30 PM ON 07/07/09

change it to the monster/myth of the month channel. the channel has sucked the last ten years. Bad programming followed by dropping shows people like. they need to fire everyone making the decisions and hire some people who know what good scifi programming can be.
i have had the channel since year one and it was better back then it is now.

By mrhis2ry at 7:33 PM ON 07/07/09

I once watched SciFi almost all of the time, but since NBC took it over and wrestling started to be shown, I watch it less and less. I like SciFi, not wrestling or the snake of the week movie. The new name and image I am sad to say suck. Did they get some stimulus money to do this?

By Ally at 7:34 PM ON 07/07/09

This is horrilbe. I do not approve of the new change. You know what they say, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Not cool.

By FormerFan at 7:35 PM ON 07/07/09

I agree. Changing the name was the last thing that needed to be done. How about some decent programming instead? The 'original' movies are insulting, the shows are weak, and too often there is non sci fi programming on.

BSG was so promising and ended up in the toilet.

Oh, and the fake shows like scare tactics and ghost hunters....lame. (Like the 'victim' doesn't notice cameras and lights set up in the middle of the desert where they are supposed to be alone.)

By FormerFan at 7:39 PM ON 07/07/09

Oh, and blurring bad CGI like Elizabeth Taylor through cheese cloth does not make it look any better.

By BigD at 7:41 PM ON 07/07/09

It is all about being able to trademark the name.

That said, there was a time when this was a great channel. These days, they want it to be more mainstream, and so you get shows like John Edwards, the interminable Ghost Hunters, whatever that "scare you" reality thing was. And let's not forget movies that no one else wanted to make, all the while ignoring the very base that gave you whatever ratings you currently have.

Remember "Pilot Playhouse"? Remember replays of older quality SF/Fantasy movies and TV shows? I hope you do, because thanks to SyFy, that's all you are going to have - memories.

By Howard the Duck at 7:47 PM ON 07/07/09

They changed it to SyFy because USA2 was too obvious!!

By Insulted at 7:49 PM ON 07/07/09

The name change is insulting. It represents the dumbing down of the population and the overwhelming pressure to conform to the materialistic masses that only value appearances of being cool, hip and popular. It's like a cool jock or cheerleader doing the poor nerd a "favor" and recreating their image. Such a shame that the powers that be can't find value in everyone and only value those who conform to their ever changing definition of acceptable.

By mojoniesen at 7:50 PM ON 07/07/09

from a branding standpoint, this is the dumbest thing SciFi could have done. They already had a strong presence and following (which they have been slowly driving away) and now they are apparently going after a market that could care less. Btw SciFi, great job pulling in the White Trash market with ECW. And why can't you please show the classic SciFi show...you obviously can't create anything worth watching on your own. Rest on other people's laurels.

By mikemattice at 7:55 PM ON 07/07/09

I always enjoyed the creative station id sequences for Scifi, and also it was brilliant to emphasize the word "if" embedded in "Scifi". I guess that's all "hystory".
By the way, WHAT DOES "SYFY' STAND FOR?

By nygsc495 at 7:57 PM ON 07/07/09

I don't really care about the name change. Do need some better shows that are science fiction and not all those stupid b list movies on the weekends. Love the ghost hunter and ghost hunters international show.
I think the new show Warehouse 13 looks like it might be a good show. Really think the money for the name change could have went to something better like the programming. i mean come on ECW thats not what this channel was for. Wheres the science fiction in that. Give us what we want not the mainstream crap that is boring.

By cylon_conspiracy at 7:59 PM ON 07/07/09

I respect that unlike MTV, they are changing their name to reflect the change of programming. SyFy is a nonsense word, Music is pretty specific word.

Oviously sci-fi shows are not getting them the crucial female demographic that they want. There's that show "Witches of Eastwick" that sci-fi covered a bit back, sort of a young Desperate Housewives meets "fantasy" and I bet that's where this network is headed, predominately female-centric shows.

The reason they brought wrestling is science fiction still, and always will have, the stigma of being for socially maladjusted male nerds. The testosterone set isn't watching TNG, they are reliving their memories of making fun of Star Trek fans in their high school years. But they will watch phony homo-erotic wrestling however. Thus, wrestling on Sci-Fi.

BSG was a one-in a million hit, meaning, don't expect to see a space-oriented drama series of that quality anytime soon, the stars simply aligned. Maybe with Caprica, lightning will strike twice, but it seems like the really GOOD shows these days, are on HBO or Showtime. I imagine the next BSG-like hit, whatever it is, will probably follow suit.

There simply aren't enough sci-fi geeks to keep a channel like this going. If there were, it wouldn't change it's focus.

By gbyscifi at 8:02 PM ON 07/07/09

Lame new name! But it fits better programing is lame now too.

By Multics at 8:14 PM ON 07/07/09

I've been disappointed since they canceled the invisible man, one of my favorites. They seem to have missed the boat with the riverworld movie by just having one and never doing any others. I like Eureka and warehouse 13 looks promising (I'll know more after the pilot). I can understand the name change, after all if you aren't really showing much scifi, why call yourself the sci-fi channel ;)

I agree that most of the Saturday night made for sci-fi movies haven't been very good. Some have been very good, but most were not.

I've found myself watching less and less scifi channel and more and more other channels. I prefer quality over quantity.

I'm also not a wrestling fan. I guess I can attribute my increased viewing of news shows to lack of sci-fi on the sci-fi channel ;)

By joesocwork at 8:16 PM ON 07/07/09

Yay! Pretty new wrapper!

By Will at 8:23 PM ON 07/07/09

More corporate crap. And all these negative comments will mean nothing. You'll just tell yourselves that we all just don't get it.

By syfyrules at 8:24 PM ON 07/07/09

oh my freakin god.. you guys need to get a grip or a life!! its a name change and addition of other types of programs...you people act as if this has devastated your lives..its entertainment..only meant to distract us for a short period of time from the real world...some of you complain with such conviction about names and different types of shows it makes you wonder what kind of life you have..i read your rants and cant help but imaging that the person writing them would resemble justin longs character in galaxy quest!! everything in the universe is constantly changing folks...so please stop complaining...they are not changing back for a hand few of "sci fi" nerds just because they cant deal!!! i am now going to watch warehouse 13 on syfy..and im willing to bet almost all of you cry babies are to!

By sdfoaib at 8:29 PM ON 07/07/09

The funniest part will be when the hoped branding/trademark profits never recoup the money they spent developing this stupid name, then they pull some Coke Classic bull in a couple of years.

By guy at 8:34 PM ON 07/07/09

In one of the countless billions of companies in media, lies a medium-sized corporation, and one of its channels, a Science and Fiction channel, is now dead.

By cory at 8:35 PM ON 07/07/09

why did they change it i liked scifi better

By jclay at 8:41 PM ON 07/07/09

Syfy why?

By DaddyOfTheMack at 8:50 PM ON 07/07/09

Does anyone remember New Coke? I'll give the Siffy channel a chance, but like many of the posters here, I have already grown tired of the programming. And the ECW???? Seriously????

By Good Grief at 8:50 PM ON 07/07/09

I'm going to give the new SyFy a chance. But I don't have very high hopes. They made it pretty obvious with some of their comments today that they'd rather cater to a more mainstream audience now.

Besides every decent show they ever came up with they cancelled as soon as it got interesting. (Except for BSG)

I hope they make it, but I'll be voting with my remote control. Right now The History Channel is better.

By Siguy at 8:55 PM ON 07/07/09

I think it's even funnier that the link to Scifi Wire is still spelled S-C-I-F-I. Way to go on branding everything properly! Idiots.

By kryche at 9:03 PM ON 07/07/09

Wow I'm glad i'm not as jaded as a lot of you folks are. I'm still able to enjoy the occasional decent series the scifi channel puts on.

Yeah, the new name is dorky, and yeah wrestling has no place in the sci fi universe (though if its bringing in money to fund original programming like BSG, Eureka etc, then it would be ignorant for me to complain, I don't have to watch it, and there are 50 bajillion other channels with stuff to watch during the same hour that wrestling is airing on syfy), but as long as they continue to air at least one or two original sci fi series that are at the very least interesting, I'll tune in.

By Jalar at 9:07 PM ON 07/07/09

This name change is stupid. If such a ridiculous marketing stunt is the start of SCI FI abandoning its original focus, such as AMC, A&E, TLC, and other cable channels did to become generic and unwatchable, SCI FI's corporate "brains' can rest assured their channel will follow to lower ratings and profits.

By aiaoern at 9:09 PM ON 07/07/09

At least ECW is pro-wrestling, where fictional characters with strength and stamina above normal humans battle each other.

The paranormal crap acts like it's really looking for ghosts and the housewife crap is for housewives.

By kosh1965 at 9:20 PM ON 07/07/09

I hope that someone in charge is reading all of these well written and thought-provoking posts. I want to thank the people at the Sci-Fi Channel for four (or was it eight) seasons of Battlestar Galactica. I also am eternally grateful that Charlie Jade was shown from beginning to end (even though I had to DVR it at 3 AM). Despite these two wonderful things, I agree with nearly everyone here that the name change is idiotic and that the programming trends over the past few years have been absolutely horrible. The reviews of Warehouse 13 are so bad that I will not be tuning in, not even just to give the pilot episode a chance. That leaves me with the faltering hope that perhaps the producers of Stargate: Universe might have hired some intelligent writers. This is the only thing I have left to look forward to on this channel.

Imagine Greaterererer!

Thanks for writing this article. Now I know the name of the tool responsible and what he looks like.

Still the worst idea this channel has had in a long time. How funny is it that SciFi Wire won't be changing its name? Missed the copyright on your own channel, but remembered to re-up the domain registration? Awesome. Another fantastic example of how poorly this was handled.

I appreciate that the wrestling fans will fill the void we're leaving, so you'll have your numbers. It still doesn't change the fact that a good idea died today so that a cr-p idea could wear its skin. As entertainers you should feel cheapened by this transition. I sincerely wish this entire branch of NBC nothing but dismal failure and blacklisting.

Oh and I hope BBCA spanks the holy bejeezus out of you guys. You're complete tools and you deserve everything that's being said here.

Some props must be given to sci-fi wire and dvice though. Even though sci-fi wire has news stories sometimes a week after aicn, there is oftne an intelligent writing style, and I enjoy reading the film reviews (when they aren't reviewing ro-coms like Ghosts of Girlfriends Past that are only technically sci-fi oriented), and I also enjoy Dvice which is a fun alternative to sites like engadget, they do a good job of showing me tech stuff that is actually cool and relevant, and often the witty descriptions of the products make me laugh so hard I am in tears, so there is some real talent in the sci-fi.com family (or should I say, syfy.com family).

But it's hard to imagine those parts of the brand developing much under this new "lifetime network" paradigm.

Um, non-committal or identity crisis? Is SyFy that much of a departure to justify wrestling or any other B-grade fantasy/horror crapolla they air? Just a pitiful attempt from weak minds in the good-ol-boy system of corporate U.S.A. And doesn't "Imagine Greater" sound too much like "Think Different" by Apple? It's a paint-by-numbers marketing agency! Yea! Apparently the SyFy channel is run by nerds rather than geeks (yes, there is a difference WySyFy).

By ChefROb at 12:46 AM ON 07/08/09

Just after watching Wharehouse 13 I decided to go to the computer and see what everyone else was saying about "SyFy". Not suprisingly it was everything I expected, and agree with. SyFy? Please tell me this is an April fools joke that got held up from the writers strike or something! If not, I see that corporate America has once again decided what is best. You should bring back "Time Tunnel" and take us back to the good old days. I liked the syfallus joke but I will start calling it S-ince Y-ou F-****d Y-ourselves

LOL I can't believe how many people STILL didn't know this change was coming, even today--and they, too, hate it.

There are multiple threads about the name change on this blog/site--well over 1200 posts--almost all of them are negative reactions to the name/vision change.

I hope some exec is feeling at least a little queasy about how their former target audience is reacting...

That audience isn't devastated or over-reacting as some have put it. We are mourning the loss of the last bastion of sci-fi programming on TV today.

We loved SciFi channel once... then came wrestling and grade C movies and fake paranormal stories.

I hope someone picks up this ball and runs with it....

By Fred Evil at 12:54 AM ON 07/08/09

It's all about the marketing folks. This was a suit's BAD DECISION, with the intent of generating more revenue. If you can't trademark it, you can't schlock it for money.

They forget that Sci-Fi fans existed before the Sci-Fi channel. Now that the Sci-Fi channel is gone Sci-Fi fans will find something else to follow. Syfy ain't gonna cut it. Not with the poorer and poorer programming they've been showing. Wrestling? While certainly fiction, it's about as far from science as you can get, although it does fulfill your Fantasy angle a bit better.

Syfy? SYFY?! Who did you test that name against, chimps?! It's awful, truly awful.

And what idiot came up with the new slogan, Imagine Greater? My dog can imagine a greater catchphrase in his sleep after eating a can of baked beans. FIRE YOUR MARKETING STAFF!!

I'm simultaneously disgusted and disappointed by you. So much for your channel.

By svrkevi at 1:41 AM ON 07/08/09

Just be glad there's a channel dedicated to SciFi or SyFy...stop complaining

By sastvguy at 2:24 AM ON 07/08/09

SyFy? WTF? I was hoping someone would pull back from the asinine rebranding, but nope...
Imagine Greater? Hell, don't even know where to start there. Just keep running the good stuff like Eureka and the 'Gates, and try not to become Spike II.

By Meta-Complaint at 2:44 AM ON 07/08/09

If y'all hate it so much--stop wasting everyone's time and just...leave. Find something you like and pay attention to it.

Oh wait, now I get it. You just. like complaining!

By cylon_conspiracy at 2:59 AM ON 07/08/09

@Meta-Complaint

Technically, what y'all just did was complain, about the complaints you saw here. Just saying. Sometimes that high horse is so high, none of us are tall of us to climb on.

By aroubg at 7:56 AM ON 07/08/09

Two months into it SyFo will threaten to sue them like Spike Lee vs Spike TV.

By theBeast at 8:15 AM ON 07/08/09

Worst. Name. Ever.

By varyar at 8:35 AM ON 07/08/09

Stupid idea, stupid in practice. It really boggles the mind that someone, somewhere, thinks that people will take a network named "Syfy" ("TOTALLY NOT SCI-FI EVEN THOUGH IT SOUNDS EXACTLY THE SAME!") more seriously than one named Sci-Fi. Maybe these sought-after demographics will suddenly appear but I somehow have doubts.

By Ohm Beat at 8:57 AM ON 07/08/09

Such a pointless change in branding, no doubt motivated by merchandising concerns (as pointed out elsewhere) and by a desire to be able to broadcast more low-brow garbage (that means you, ECW Wrestling!) without viewers harping on the fact that a station called SciFi should broadcast sci-fi!!

All I can say is that the name change is irrelevant anyway; programming is what speaks to the masses, and in the past few years things have definitely started to slip...

By penderd at 9:03 AM ON 07/08/09

I will admit, I hate the name change but will continue to view and support this station despite the loss of some quality shows as I want to see BSG's "The Plan" and Caprica but you guys need to get rid of all of the reality and wrestling. Believe me we scifi fans watch the channel not for qwrestling but for science fiction television, so please do that for us.

By Major at 9:24 AM ON 07/08/09

SyFy is right up there with new coke, the edsel and the pet rock. What a dumb change.

By BarbS at 9:31 AM ON 07/08/09

I don't mind the creature movies. I grew up watching "Creature Feature" on the weekends back in the 60's and 70's: "Creature from the Black Lagoon", "Them!", "The Blob", and lots and lots of Vincent Price movies, anything with werewolves, mummy's, vampires or giant monsters or killer critters about to destroy all mankind or at least some nice little town. Loved it! Still do. But Wresting? I've never figured out why

By iInfall at 9:50 AM ON 07/08/09

If you want to sell stuff with your logo plastered all over it, SyFy IS NOT going to get the job done for you. Seriously. Just because you coyrighted it doesn't mean people will buy your crap.

Seriously, it's time for a competing outlet. SyFy is in a death spiral.

By TimB at 10:17 AM ON 07/08/09

This new name is ridiculous. But.... its about time they dropped the SciFi name since the channel has very little to do science fiction anymore. Then again is there any real science fiction outside of books anymore?

By Rinoa at 10:55 AM ON 07/08/09

The whole name change was a bad, very bad move. We are not pleased with this change. We refuse to watch SyFy.

By Joe B. at 12:35 PM ON 07/08/09

Yes, let's all hail the dumbest name change in history. I encourage everyone to keep calling the network "Sci Fi" and not "SyFy"...the marketing genius who came up with this idiotic name should be fired.

By Max at 1:18 PM ON 07/08/09

Sci Fi means, Science Fiction! All the real Sci Fi fans know this and will always call it Sci Fi channel. This new name, SyFy is just another way for TV executives that don’t know the difference between Stargate and Star Trek to attract more none Sci Fi fans to the network. Stupid me but I thought that was what USA network was for?!? NBC Universal you suck!!!
I hope the new branding fails and whoever came up with this idea gets fired!!!

By Dr. Malcolm Long at 2:11 PM ON 07/08/09

"You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!"

By Simon at 2:37 PM ON 07/08/09

It's hilarious when I read the dozens of comments like those above, where 99.9% express a negative opinion of the rebrand-- while Channel Pres Dave Howe spins the claim, "I haven't had an e-mail for two months despite the fact that my name is very prominent in chat rooms and on message boards...So the fact that I've had fewer than 20 e-mails in four months says to me that people really do understand why we're doing this.”

I have a feeling Howe's either got blinders on, or his staff of yes-men are deleting the negative emails.

By syfyrules at 9:06 PM ON 07/08/09

yes mandy...they do think you are stupid!! and they are correct!! all of you haters have some real deep mental issuse..almost all of you have thrown the "new coke" comparison out and its not even close to being the same thing...coke is the number recognized trade mark in the world..when they screwed up they took somthing from the world (classic coke) and replaced it with an inferior product...the world demanded that coke bring back the classic formula and they did..syfy has only changed the aesthetics..they have not taken anything away..they have only added other kinds of programming to apeal to a wider audience..syfy is simply another number in a long list of channels for you to choose from...they are not coke...the world spoke for coke...you handful of complainers living in your parents basements do not speak for the scfi community...you cant seem to deal with change..i hate to tell you this but EVERYTHING changes.. except ofcourse for you..all of you sitting and waiting for syfy to crumble are gonna be wrong yet again..but hey at least you will have somthing else to bitch about

By Mandy at 9:26 PM ON 07/08/09

Syfyrules, I disliked the name change of a channel and the efforts to mislead viewers. That is not grounds for you to attack me as a person. Try being a civilized human being when giving a rebuttal instead of a child.

I love change. This, though, is nto a change for the better. It's intellectually insulting and the excuses giving 'such as needing something markettable' was an out right lie. They DID have a copyright on the words 'Scifi Channel' and they let it lapse. Just remove 'channel' and that's what can't be copyrighted but the words 'Scifi Channel' WERE copyrighted to them until recently. So they attempted to mislead people into thinking they couldn't own their own name. Carefully wording things for spin control for excuses.

By Bernie at 9:28 PM ON 07/08/09

SyFy - it's like JyFy Lube. It's 'iffy', you know?

By Mandy at 9:42 PM ON 07/08/09

It looks like Siffy now. My mind doesn't see Scifi. It sees siffy. It's like learning another language... for the stupid.

By fcksyfy at 10:05 PM ON 07/08/09

I am removing SciFi from my favorites button and never returning to the channel again.

Why waist so much advertising money on some horrible and unimaginative brand/logo just to put on some crappy merch no one wants to buy?

Turning your channel into MTV is only going to loose you your niche market. The niche market is all SciFi has or ever will have. Why would customers waste their time on mass appeal crap they can get on any other channel when the internet gives them the freedom to explore exactly what interests them and ignore a channel that only gets more bland as time goes on?

If anyone really wants the execs to listen to their complaints they are going to have to take a stand and stop flipping to the channel.

By syfyrules at 10:27 PM ON 07/08/09

mandy..i apologize for the comments i made in my earlier post...it was childish.. and naming you personally when my aggrivation is with many more here than you was wrong...i as a long time scifi fan just cant understand the anger some of you have towards somthing so insignificant as 4 little letters "syfy"..you say that the programming will not be true to scfi fans who have been here since the start.. and then when warehouse 13 airs you complain that it resembles other scifi shows..you dont want them to change but when a new show resembles somthing very close to what you are used to then its no good either..some people cant be pleased..but the majority of syfy's audience are not so fickle...is ecw wrestling in any way realated to scifi? hell no...but for 2 years it has brought the scifi channel ratings..its there for the ones who want to watch it.. just like ghost hunters...for those who dont there are many many other channels to choose from..its business...not personal

By Mandy at 11:16 PM ON 07/08/09

I'm bitter about Syfy and the stunts being pulled about Warehouse 13. I'll explain both. It's more than just a name change.

I'm bitter about Warehouse 13 because I loved The Dresden Files. They have two cast members and one writer from The Dresden Files (and some props) and made Warehouse 13 with a ghost (Sam) subplot storyline that in rough drafts was a little too much like Bob in The Dresden Files. So why didn't they just continue The Dresden Files?

I heard they were so callous toward the creators of Dresden Files that the author (Jim Butcher) never even got a DVD set of the show from them. A friend had to buy him the DVDs. That's pretty low.

I don't care too much about Scifi changing the name except for the fact that the name feels ignorant. It looks like a badly done text message by someone using l33t speak or cyber slang or online short hand or whatever 'New Speak' we're calling it now. Also Syfy is Polish for rubbish. I don't like that a channel I once loved is now literally called trash. It doesn't look like the short 'science fiction' abbreviation anymore. It looks like 'Siffy.'

I think part of me is still bitter with how they treated The Dresden Files, leaving us fans in the lurch for several months, not knowing if it would be renewed or not and then not renewing it, hoping we'd quietly fade away. Robert Wolfe (one of the producers) hinted to us that we older women were the 'wrong demographic' yet they claimed pride in the females they drew in with Battlestar Galactica with their sexist view that 'less action and no space ships and more fluff' would draw us women in. I was twenty five when Dresden Files aired. I didn't realize that was over the hill... But apparently they wanted teenage boys.

To add to my bitterness I hate liars. Scifi told Variety magazine that Dresden Files was their worst commercial failure. Yet when it aired they called it a hit as it was running and it was the third highest rated show for Scifi for all of 2007, occasionally beating the ratings on even Battlestar Galactica. They treated Dresden Files like it was garbage and then borrow from it's cast, crew, and even a plot line from it for Warehouse 13 which is painfully close to Friday the 13th the series.

Now Scifi has started a new batch of lies. They were calling Warehouse 13 one of their Top Shows over a month ago, LONG before the pilot aired. So how much can we trust in what they say about people loving it? Their contract with Hulu states they will hold Season 1 of Warehouse 13 up until the start of Season 2, meaning no matter how bad it might do it's guaranteed a second season no matter what. They have to claim it's good because it's their new 'flagship' show. That's not fair, nor is it right.

During the spin control about this name change they claimed they wanted a name they could copyright and that scifi was not copyrightable. This is true but it's also a lie. They had already had a copyright on the name 'Scifi Channel.' The word channel was the key. They let that copyright expire on purpose.

Scifi also tried to imply that Syfy was an original name. They bought it from some online news letter now calling itself airlock alpha that had been around a good ten years.

When someone who used to work for scifi said that they wanted to distance themselves from 'social outcasts who live in their parents basements' that offended a lot of people. Scifi tried to deny this statement but that was just spin control. To quote Jareth in Labyrinth 'What's said is said.'

Don't you see? The lies and dishonesty to the viewers are starting to get to me.

I don't care what Scifi calls itself but the lies have pushed me over my limit. I've had it. Scifi lost my viewership when it canceled Dresden Files. Now it's lost my respect.

I love fantasy. I'd love for scifi to have more fantasy but Professional Wrestling never belonged on this channel. And there are now double the reality shows to original TV shows on Scifi. I loathe the wrestling and reality shows. And Ghosthunters hurts my head. As someone who actually took a course in parapsychology I find it insulting.

Those are my complaints about this channel.

By cookiemonster at 11:36 PM ON 07/08/09

New branding looks lame and childish. I guess that means SyFy will be replacing some other good programming with the Teletubbies this time.

By meta-Complaint at 11:36 PM ON 07/08/09

@ cylon_conspiracy

That wasn't a high horse. It was an observation that the community that responds to many of the posts on this site seems to favor repetitious whining about the same things again and again. Perhaps I was not clear on that.

If I don't like the direction a network or show is going, I'll simply stop watching it. Either it'll gather a significant audience to support its new directions or it'll fail. EIther way, I'll move on to something more interesting.

Some people just seem terminally unhappy with this network and they seem to thrive on coming here just to complain about it. Those are the people I'm really talking about ... not solitary individuals voicing a negative opinion.

By meta-Complaint at 11:40 PM ON 07/08/09

Just to clarify--by "solitary" i mean isolated cases. I'm not referring to a lack of social companions ;)

By duggm at 12:37 PM ON 07/09/09

I can't believe this channel is so desperate and misguided that they think they can bring in significant numbers of new viewers by 'softening' their name. What they have done is to turn their back on fans of the genre they are supposed to represent! Seeing the offending logo makes watching the channel difficult. Please see the error in your ways and try to get back on track. IF YOU TRULY FEEL THE NEED TO CHANGE YOUR NAME, CHANGE IT TO PHIL OR ROCK CANDY OR SOMETHING THAT IS NOT A SLAP IN THE FACE TO YOUR FAN BASE!!!!

By muadib at 2:48 PM ON 07/09/09

Can't call the channel scifi when you show nonscifi programs.the head nucklehead who is claimind "i got no negative email" is either a liar or deluded.and as far as "SCIFI PERSONEL"deleating posts here .you betcha they do .unfortunatly if they deleated the negative posts there would be no posts at all.

By not registering at 12:16 AM ON 07/10/09

i have always watched this channel. I've seen a lot of really great shows, movies and the sci fi santa. (remember sci fi santa). It was fun. Now, I don't understand what is happening. Wresting, reality TV and really bad movies are taking the channel over. Heck, I could turn on USA and watch similar content. I think I'll go do that right now.

By Joesketeer at 6:56 AM ON 07/12/09

As an English major, I really do not get this. This is pointless, and kind of unnerving.

By Bigbossgusman at 10:20 PM ON 07/12/09

My wife & I are just flabbergasted we think the new SyFy logo looks like a cutise pie, gag me with a spoon 11yr old valley girl came up with the idea. You have also lost the "IF" factor in SCI FI for promos that were actually pretty cool. We want to put a peice of duct tape over the logo just to block it out! I predict this is the begining of the end & an NBC decision not thought out

By chill at 4:22 PM ON 07/13/09

I find it hard to comment with anything new - it's all been said and said magnificantly. I can only add that it has been very sad to see what has been considered as "SF" over the last couple of years. Horror is NOT SF. I too hope that there may be a return of the "real" SF but I doubt it.....

By Geory at 6:38 PM ON 07/14/09

I know you guys will never get it after all of that negative feedback. "Syfy" SUCKS!
If you really do not get it, then something is wrong! Fans will not put up with it,wait.

By Boss at 4:07 AM ON 07/15/09

NBC changed there logo, realized there mistake and went back to the peacock. Learn from NBC's mistakes SyFy belongs in the trash..

By dislike at 10:57 PM ON 07/15/09

this is dumg the only reason they are doing this is to atract more of a womans crowed when scifi is for what it states.. and if you ask me the new logo looks a little to much like USA style..i want my scifi back

By Propervillain at 7:24 PM ON 07/16/09

I think the only positive comments on this, and any other thread discussing this subject, were probably put there by someone in "SyFy" corporate. I agree, HORRIBLE idea. I have been a science fiction fan my whole life and not only this terrible branding idea, but the whole attitude of the geniuses that run the channel is one that looks down the nose at any true sci-fi fan. These people are CLUELESS as to what fans of science fiction want from a channel nor do they seem willing to listen. Wrestling? What the hell? And all those crap "original movies" that they make are just heinous. Ugh, I hope they wake up before the it's too late. I think any one of us on this thread could come up with better programming than any one of these morons on their best day....

By SteveVA at 7:22 PM ON 07/17/09

Every time I see SyFy I always wonder, " What's a Siffy?" Maybe you should have spent more money on upgrading your programming, dumping that idiotic wrestling and losing those moronic movies on Saturday nite.

Compared to those crappy flicks you guys make "Robot Monster" and "Plan Nine from Outer Space" look like "Citizen Kane" and " To Kill a Mockingbird."

By Truthreallyhurts at 11:17 AM ON 07/18/09

I have been watching the SciFi (SYFY) channel for many moons and I have to say the new call letters totally suck. If management felt the channel was losing its competitive edge, then they should have focused on improving the programming. I love science fiction and it makes no sense for a science fiction channel to offer wrestling for example. I loved the Stargate series, Dr. Who, Torchwood ( I am sorry that's BBC America), and other shows set in outer space, or stretch the imagination. Bottom Line, I love all things Science Fiction and if you depart from this type of programming, then I will catch my Sci Fi somewhere else. Changing the call letters only serves to annoy especially when searching for the channel on cable after changing cable companies.
