Scott Pilgrim bad girl offers a sneak peek

Director Edgar Wright's film adaptation of the Scott Pilgrim comic-book series, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, is based on volume two of the books and references the many ex-boyfriends the hero (Michael Cera) must fight to win the girl of his dreams.

Pilgrim must also face down mystical Demon Hipster girls, a vegan psychic, a ninja, robots and more in his battles. Aubrey Plaza, who plays Julie Powers in the film, only got to antagonize Pilgrim verbally.

"I don't get to fight," Plaza lamented in a group interview on Saturday, where she was promoting the comedy Funny People. "There's a lot of fighting in the movie. I don't get to fight physically. With my words, only. A lot of yelling and just venom coming out of my mouth."

Julie Powers is the on-again, off-again girlfriend of Pilgrim's band mate Stephen Stills. Plaza enjoyed letting loose in her character. "Yeah, it was great to be angry every day," she said. "It was really awesome."

Scott Pilgrim is the bass player in the Canadian band Sex Bob-omb. When he meets his dream girl Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead in the film), seven evil exes stand in his way. The film's Powers is no help, either.

"I don't know if you're familiar with the comic book, but she's kind of an antagonist to Michael Cera's character," Plaza said. "She's kind of like a bitchy record store employee."

Plaza recently returned from filming on location. "I just finished shooting that," she said. "I just got back from Canada, and that was really fun."

Universal Pictures plans to release Scott Pilgrim vs. the World in 2010.
