SDCC: Cameron reveals plans for Battle Angel Alita

SDCC: Cameron reveals plans for \<i\>Battle Angel Alita\<\/i\>

On Friday night at Entertainment Weekly's Visionaries panel featuring James Cameron and Peter Jackson, Cameron revealed that Battle Angel Alita might be next for him after the release of Avatar in December. "It's a good idea to get a gig lined up in case Avatar tanks," he said jokingly to a packed house. "Battle Angel's definitely something that I still love, and that's something we're looking at very seriously."

Cameron also said he's considering several other options, but admitted he's not altogether keen to look forward until after he's completed Avatar. "I have other projects as well, so it's [a question of] how much appetite am I going to have for another big effects movie when I finish this one," he explained. "But you know, it's not a good time to ask a woman if she wants to have other kids when she's crowning."

Here's the Wikipedia description of the manga series, which is also the basis of a popular anime series:

Battle Angel Alita tells the story of Alita ("Gally" in the original Japanese version), an amnesiac female cyborg. This cyborg's intact head and upper torso are found in a state of suspended animation by the cybermedic expert Daisuke Ido while he is out searching for useful scrap. Amazed by his discovery, Ido quickly returns home and works to revive her. Upon finding that the girl has lost her memory, Ido names her Alita, the name of his recently deceased cat.

The rebuilt Alita soon discovers that she possesses instinctive knowledge of the legendary martial art Panzer Kunst, although she has no other memories of her previous life. Alita must learn to navigate, exist and fight in the Scrapyard, whose inhabitants themselves live in the shadow of the tantalizingly close floating city, Tiphares. Her journeys take Alita across the Scrapyard and surrounding areas, as she tries to recall more of her past.

Oh, so NOW he's doing a live adaption of Battle Angel Alita. I thought that's what Dark Angel was trying to be. Friggin' late if you ask me.

Good grief! Dark Angel and Battle Angel Alita have absolutely nothing to do with one another, except in the most abstract, philosophical sense.

You just KNOW Battle Angel is going to get shelved... again. For the 16th time this decade. When Cameron says "it's a question of how much appetite I have for big effects movies when I finish this one..." you know he really means "I'm going to direct The Dive because I need a break." I just hope I'm 100% wrong

I sincerely hope it won't get shelved. I've been waiting for a hollywood treatment of Battle Angel for some time. Considering the time Cameron takes between films, he NEEDS to get it done or we will be waiting another 10 years for the making of this movie to come to fruition. Think we've waited long enough. STOP TEASING!!

Many of us have been waiting for this. Again, Cameron sounds half-hearted. Please God let someone serious about this take it away from him. Cameron, you are becoming a pain in the ass.

Battle Angel Alita es uno de los mejores mangas que existen. A ver si hay suerte y decide hacerla cuando acabe Avatar. La gran pregunta es que parte de la historia representará; porque hay para hacer una saga.

There have been recent interviews where he has mentioned that Battle Angel would be impossible to produce until the necessary Technology was created. The intergration allowing the simutainous intergration of the main picture, CG backgrounds and characters, and 3D to be viewed in real time simply did not exist. Now it does. Pluse he has taken to personally handeling the scrip as it had deviated from the original story. I whish I could say more, but the people I know have pointed out that the NDAs are very tight, so there is little that they can say. Suffice to say that TOO MUCH MONEY has already been invested to let this die.
Being a former Hollywood minion, I know that editing has begun and will take over a year to finish. 2011 is the date to keep your eye on.
Nuff said.
