Seth Rogen seemed mellow about the various hurdles his Green Hornet film has faced and assured reporters on Saturday that the movie is going forward despite rumors to the contrary.
Rogen spoke about the proposed superhero movie for the first time since news broke this week that Stephen Chow officially dropped out as sidekick Kato, which followed news that the film's release date and production date have been postponed by weeks.
"It's going great," Rogen said sincerely in a group interview today in Santa Monica, Calif., where he was promoting the comedy Funny People. "In my head, we lost Stephen Chow in April, so it's something I've had a lot of time to wrap my head around."
Rogen explained that the news of Chow's departure made the rounds only lately, but added that he and the filmmakers have known about it for a while and are already actively pursuing new Katos. "To me we haven't had a Kato since April, and we're looking," he said. "We're kind of in the same boat we were in beforehand."
As for the frequent delays, Rogen cited the economic downturn. Low DVD sales have made the studios more cautious about funding major projects. Also, Rogen affirmed, he, co-writer Evan Goldberg and director Michel Gondry are making an atypical studio blockbuster.
"You know, we're not trying to make what they would probably consider to be a 100 percent safe version of a movie like this," Rogen said. "We like to push the envelope in some directions. We like to do things that we find interesting and new and original. You bring Michel Gondry into the equation, and that opens up a whole new bag of worms."
In the same way Rogen's comedies are collaborative, with the actors improvising and writing jokes for each other, Rogen has also sought input from his gang for Green Hornet.
"Right now we're making a big movie and not many of our friends have made a movie this scale," he said. "So we're inviting everyone imaginable to come and just see what it's like and give us their ideas and throw in their input, have them learn from what we're doing and to get all their ideas in the process."
Funny People is Rogen's last starring role until he films The Green Hornet, but he teased that he may make an appearance at this week's San Diego Comic-Con to offer a preview. "There may be a little something at Comic-Con. I never know what I can say and what I can't say."
The Green Hornet is scheduled to open July 9, 2010.

Seth Rogan - the new Mel Brooks...minus the charm, wit, intelligence, creativity and talent of course.
By Paul at 5:47 PM ON 07/18/09
Really sounds like a disaster in the making. Hopefully not.

Good thing is it can't possible be as bad as catwomen

Wow... just Wow..
Ladies and Gentlemen. I give you Seth Rogan... the new creative director for the SciFi Channel.
By zosolias at 10:41 PM ON 07/18/09
I can't even begin to imagine how horribly bad this will be.
Green Hornet with fart jokes.
Seth Rogan may single-handedly kill off the entire super-hero genre.

"Seth Rogan hasn't made a truly horrible movie yet, and most have been better than watchable."??
Apparently you didn't watch Observe and Report, that was a truly terrible movie!
Zosolias hit it on the head, Green Hornet with Fart Jokes.

Give the poor man a chance. Check out a preview when they have one. I don't see how the movie affects you in anyway so ultimatley who cares if it is good or bad.

I agree with you man, too much negativity. But what is funny is that all these people bashing this before anything is even done, will be all the people praising the film if it turns out to be actually good. It will truly be a pitiful sight to see them all change their colors.
Me personally, I am remaining optimistic about this movie and that maybe Seth Rogan has enough respect for the source material to actually make a kick ass movie.

@ BlakOpal:
"...maybe Seth Rogan has enough respect for the source material to actually make a kick ass movie."
With all due respect, that doesn't have a chance of happening, Rogan's *own* comments (some even here in earlier interviews) about the Green Hornet franchise from the get-go have shown that he has little or no respect OR knowledge of the 70+ year old franchise beyond the occasional rerun of the 60s TV series and his own delusional estimation of his talents.
The very fact that he's taking a comedic slapstick (his own descriptive) take on a very serious character and his apparent goal to go full steam ahead regardless of occurrences around him shows what seems to be an almost deliberate attempt to make this one of the largest farces in the history of Super Hero movies. At this point our only hope is that with the loss of Chow from the project completely - the only legitimate feature of the entire production so far - the studio steps in, before Rogan creates the next "Batman and Robin" or "Catwoman."
As to changing colors. I can't speak for everyone, but I can assure you that I won't be seeing it as long as Rogan is associated with it - nor anything else he's a participant in simply because of the disrespect he's shown towards the fans and the venerable franchise itself.

you guys are getting a serious headstart on the movie bashing. He's a funny bastard and i doubt he's an idiot, so how bout ya wait until he does something stupid with this movie before the stupid comments start runnin

To all you 15yo Seth Rogan groupies:
Those off us who appreciate the Green Hornet for what has gone before have actually been following the development of this movie pretty closely, and our fears of the worse are based on what has been said by Rogan himself.
Stupid comments are made by people who speak from a position of ignorance. I have researched this movie more than most, and feel that my opinion that this movie will be lousy to be accurate. If you are unfamiliar with the Green Hornet and just like seeing Rogan make an ass of himself, then you may love this movie.
By blackjesus at 3:51 PM ON 07/19/09
@ETo
"What has gone before" was 40 + years ago. I don't know why you would expect this to be a completely faithful remake. 95% of the people alive now even remembers the green hornet. Also no one cares what anyone in this thread says.
Just be glad that someone is going to get the name Green Hornet out there so people will take a look at the old stuff. But everyone just wants to crap all over the little bit of info you've gotten on it. What about stephen chow I bet you considered him a bad match for this project etc.... You guys could whine about this until the trailer comes out and then be like "OMG the Green hornet! I can't wait! I want to give Seth Rogan a taint bath! He's so awesome!"
BTW I don't think Seth Rogan is all that great but I can give him he benefit of the doubt about this.
By Captain Meteor at 4:00 PM ON 07/19/09
This will be another 'Spirit,' I fear..
By ETo at 4:33 PM ON 07/19/09
Blackjesus is awesome!
But if nobody cares what people say in this thread, why did you feel it necessary to comment?
If 95% of the people alive now don't know who the Green Hornet is, then shouldn't you want them to be introduced to the character in a movie that doesn't suck? If it sucks no one will want to go back to look at the old stuff, I would prefer that they didn't make a movie if it isn't going to be good.
I didn't know much about Stephen Chow before this, but when I found out that he was a comedian I could see that he would be a perfect match for the type of movie Rogan would want to make.
I'm pretty sure that no matter how good this movie is, that I wouldn't give Seth a taint bath. He's not really my type.
I give Seth Rogan the benefit of the doubt in some comedies, but he'll need to prove to me that he won't screw this up. If it fails, it could ruin the chances of it ever being made again. (Yes I know that a bad movie wouldn't necessarily eliminate the possibility of another remake, i.e. Hulk and The Incredible Hulk).
By cologeek at 8:30 PM ON 07/19/09
The more I hear about the movie and Seth Rogen's vision of it, the more convinced I am that the only good that can come out of it is the possible release of the 1966 series on DVD.
By Kenn at 9:34 PM ON 07/19/09
"95% of the people alive don't know who the Green Hornet is."
Um... that's almost a direct quote from Rogan's interview with MTV about the movie, used to justify his "unique take" on the project.
Lets just us this thread as an example. About 70% of the posts here seem to a) know who the Green Hornet is and b) think that, from just the information given by Rogan himself... the movie is going to be a failure at representing the franchise.
Expand those numbers out to even the small portion of the movie goers that tend to go to see films in the superhero/pulp genre, and that pans out to a lot more than Rogan would like to intimate will have issues with his film.
And a heck of a lot of smart adults with jobs that don't find his humor amusing and won't be buying 10+dollar tickets to see it.
I think Rogan is entirely wrong (and not surprised if deliberately so) about the interest in and knowledge of the franchise. If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that he's doing it with the hopes that "nerdrage" will generate more pre-release interest in the movie.
I would also have to hazard a guess (however not much of a stretch) that Rogan hopes that the majority of the people that will actually be buying tickets will be the same people that see all of his other movies and that no self-respecting fan of the pulp genre will go anywhere near the movie. This is almost insured by creating a movie in "his" style (incidentally a style of movie done a hell of a lot better by National Lampoon and Cheech and Chong decades ago, and by Broken Lizard nowadays) instead of remotely visiting any serious attempt at bringing the franchise *back* to the big screen.
The more he fuels that fire by ignorant comments and ridiculous movie production antics, then better an "curiosity boost" the opening of the movie gets.
That weekend's sales is all Sony is going to care about.
As I said before, our hope lies with the bean-counters to decide the project isn't as viable as they hoped and abort it before it's delivered.

Guys, guys, guys. I've read the GH comics. I've listened to many episodes of the radio show. I watched the tv show in first run. And I've seen the films of Rogen and Gondry. This film will be fine. The source material isn't some holy writ that never received the recognition and high budget it deserved; when you strip it down, honestly, it was pulp, a poor competitor in its day to The Shadow and (literally) a second generation copy of The Lone Ranger. Gondry isn't some inexperienced hack looking to make the most commercial film in history. I too regret that Chow is gone, but I think we can all make it through another day. And I do hope they give fart jokes a rest. But if they were doing a hack job instead of thinking it through carefully it would already be in the can.
By Ok But.... at 3:39 PM ON 07/20/09
Should they have started principle photography by now? If they seriously want to make that July release date.
This just seems like more stalling and less honesty, I've have the felling that in a few weeks he'll just come forward and say the the whole thing is off.
He just wont say it right now.

Seth Rogain + Green Hornet; This will SUCK on Elephantine proportions!
Stephan Chow is smart for bailing on this waste of time.

Rogen hasn't made a movie as big as this and if we are lucky, he won't be anytime soon.
