Justin Hartley at the Saturn Awards

The fact that The CW's Smallville is entering its ninth season has surprised its producers, let alone the fans. The show, which began with Clark Kent in high school before he became Superman, has morphed into a series with many other popular DC Comics characters in their younger incarnations. Now, Justin Hartley, who plays Oliver Queen/Green Arrow, said reports that the ninth season will be the last may be premature.

"Look, they're so busy right now, they don't know if they're doing one more season or eight more seasons or two more seasons," Hartley said last week at the Saturn Awards in Burbank, Calif. "They have no idea. So we'll see. I've spoken to them a couple weeks ago and had kind of a vague conversation with them about concept and stuff."

So now it\'s possible \<i\>Smallville\<\/i\>\'s upcoming ninth season may not be its last?
Hartley plays Oliver Queen/Green Arrow

Hartley returns to work in July. As season nine begins, Oliver might be doing more harm than good. "I know I'm in the episode," he said. "I know there's a couple of saves gone awry. I think Oliver might be drinking again, which is always fun to play. So we'll see what happens. I'll leave that up to the brain trust."

The show should pick up where the season finale left off, though considering how long its cast has been playing teenagers/young adults, Hartley can't be sure of the timeline.

"I don't know, but I've been going to the gym, and I've been doing a lot of moisturizing, so hopefully not too long [after], because I think actually in season nine, I'm actually going to play a little younger than I did in season eight," Hartley said. "So we'll see. Maybe we actually go back in time. I'd say I'm playing what, 14 or 15 right now, about, roughly. I don't know, maybe a couple months [have passed]."

Smallville will also introduce General Zod this year (played by Callum Blue), but it is too early for Hartley to know if Green Arrow will encounter the iconic supervillain.

"I don't know, we'll see," Hartley said. "I hope so. I always like to work with new actors. We just got this guy. I guess they hired a gentleman a couple days ago, so hopefully. We'll see what happens."

Smallville returns Sept. 25 on The CW and will move to a new timeslot, Fridays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

I think what he actually meant to say was "let's see if the Friday night slot is going to be the death knell that everyone is predicting"

By tamcamry at 9:19 AM ON 07/01/09

Look, I love this show. I've been with it almost since the begining. But eventually, Clark has to become Superman. Red-Blue Blur. Come on.

By Jamal D B at 9:36 AM ON 07/01/09

I have followed the show from the beginning, and I can tell you, the last two seasons were highly disappointing. But season 8; my God how awful. The writers need inspiration or freedom from Warner bros. From what i've read, they've lowered the budget but, they spent half of a billion dollars on that crappy superman returns movie, but then can't spend a solid million plus an episode on smallville? Animals indeed. If they do the same thing to season nine, perhaps mid way through, i'll stop watching sv all together.

By MattM at 9:59 AM ON 07/01/09

I was glad to hear Smallville was returning for another season. We love the show and have watched since the pilot episode. I also think Seasons 7/8 were actually picking up from 5/6. Here's hoping that Clark actually learns to fly and transitions into Superman this year. I like the focus with Green Arrow, but put him with Dinah/Black Canary instead of that LexCorp babe. And how about some more episodes with all of the Justice League folks?

By radiodaze at 10:06 AM ON 07/01/09

The real problem is, there stuck in the storyline. Clark should have either become Superman or gone off on his tour of the world/education that he did in the Birthright graphic novel. Actually, I think the world tour would be a great idea...it would get him out of Kansas (and don't give me grief about the title of the show-it hasn't really been set in Smallville for two or three years now!) and give him the chance to develop his skills as both reporter and hero and give me a logical excuse NOT to put on the red and blue for a while longer (which Welling has always said he will never do anyway). And for God sake, let him FLY! That old "no flights" rule was made when they thought the show would only last a couple of years, not a decade. It stupid that he can't fly yet and there's no logical reason to support it.

I agree, the Red-Blue Blur thing is old hat. Introduce Superman already. But I see Smallville as an "Elseworlds" tale and not part of established DC continuity. But for gods sake step it up, I got my wish last season when the Legion showed up in an episode clearly inspired by the animated Superman episode "New Kids in Town" now introduce Smallville's version of Hal Jordan (Green Lantern).

By joesocwork at 10:38 AM ON 07/01/09

Even though the show started with a great premise and good chemistry between the characters, I don't think the creators thought how to build the bridge into the characters growing up and becoming who they would be in the lore. Unless they become adults and who we expect them to be, I see the ninth season to be as miserable as the eighth and probably the end of the series.

By libeccio at 10:52 AM ON 07/01/09

why why why?
this show has not been good since forever.
it started as a nice show about the story of Clark Kent and Lex Luthor, now it's just another atrocious cw soap opera.
the real problem here is who the hell is giving the cw network all the money to produce these horrid shows?
all the cw shows have very low ratings, nobody is interested in any cw show anymore, all that's left is a bunch of fat online fangirls. so where the cw is making the money to go on?
someone needs to stop this disgusting network.

By sims at 10:55 AM ON 07/01/09

The SV fanbase is not only loyal but extremely gullible. Noone knows this more than tptb hence the dire plotlines, retcons and inconsistencies. TW is another factor.. he thinks he's really Clark Kent and has no doesn't want to leave the show, his safe haven.

By Kyle Nin at 11:03 AM ON 07/01/09

Season 8 was hands down the BEST season of "Smallville". You'd have to be an idiot to miss that. The series is now how it should have been years ago. They've FINALLY gotten rid of the "freak-of-the-week" stories. Didn't that ever get on anyone's nerves? Having the creators leave the series was the best thing for it.

Now, as for the series going longer than nine seasons. I think they're just trying to beat the longevity record set by "Stargate SG-1".

By stargazer_1682 at 11:15 AM ON 07/01/09

Sims, Smallville fans might have been loyal take whatever tripe the show runners gave them, but the tide has slowly ben turning; thanks in no small part to the abysmal season 8 finale and Clark hugging Doomsday into submission.

Because of the limitations of what the show writers wont do with the main character, namely fly, actually become Superman; the show is in a holding pattern and is already strating to become stagnant. But I am glad to read that it's only one of the actors, saying it's a possibility; as opposed to an executive type saying it's a fact.
It's just speculation at this point and time will prove it right or wrong, Justin Hartely doesn't know definitively, any better than the rest of us.
If Smallville can't step up to beat the "Friday Nigh Death Slot" that have felled so many other broadcast network shows, then it'll all be a moot point.

By AngryJonny at 11:21 AM ON 07/01/09

I think they've been saying this is the final season of Smallville for the last three seasons. And the show isn't even about Clark's life in Smallville anymore. They should change the title to Metropolis.

By AE7RJ at 11:52 AM ON 07/01/09

Yeah, he really needs to put on the suit. This "I'm just a guy, I'm not a superhero." stuff is getting a little long in the tooth. He needs to put on the suit, he needs to fly around and Lois needs to give him his name.

By Muldfeld at 12:48 PM ON 07/01/09

That Smallville has survived so long, while Angel got the axe after Season 5, when there was so much more to explore, sickens me to the core! The ultimate proof that popularity doesn't lead to quality.

By Kevin at 12:51 PM ON 07/01/09

"They should change the title to Metropolis."

Ditto. I've been saying that for a few years now.

By chifu52 at 1:12 PM ON 07/01/09

When does clark go on his 12 years of Training to the Fortress. When are you going to introduce a young Bruce Wayne into the Mix. They should do a Infinity Crisis episode and Bring Kara back as Power Girl from the future

By Jayr at 1:23 PM ON 07/01/09

The last scene of the last episode of Smallville should be Clark doning the Superman suit, flying off and doing as the late great Chris Reeve did at the end of Superman The Movie - look at the camera before flying off.

By pheonyx at 2:16 PM ON 07/01/09

They killed a major character from the real mythos of Superman. Jimmy Olsen. Sure cloe handed the camera to Jimmy's little brother but his name isn't Jimmy. This is nothing more than an "Elseworlds" story. and therefore it can't be compared to DC canon. Yeah there have been some sucky decisions by both the Clark character and the producers. If you don't like it don't watch it.

By Graham at 6:09 PM ON 07/01/09

pheonyx - His first name was Henry. James was his middle name. The little brother we saw was in fact Jimmy Olsen, later to be cub reporter.

By goraiders1919 at 7:27 PM ON 07/01/09

Moving to Fridays during the fall when football is in full swing is going to kill smallville. Friday night lights are a lot of the people watching smallville right now.

By SighFyeGuy at 8:16 PM ON 07/01/09

I agree that the writers are stuck in the sense that the show is supposed to be about Clark Kent and not Superman. The last scene of the last episode should be Clark in the suit for the first time and flying off to save the world... But the red-blue blur is getting to be ridiculous... And shouldn't he be in university, learning journalism? Why is he at the Planet writing for it with no training, diploma or credentials??

By alfreeland at 2:31 AM ON 07/02/09

Oh, for the love of all things Holy, please end this show. It's waaaaay outstayed it's welcome. Poor writing/planning and storylines, ridiculous retcons, idiotic inconsistencies and character assassination--how can I keep up?

Don't make ppl hate Superman. Let him go.

Ditto joesw

By kev74 at 3:13 AM ON 07/02/09

I would like to see then wrap things up in the ninth season and maybe have a spin off with the Green Arrow or something.

By monel at 7:39 AM ON 07/02/09

Great show, great premise, 8 years of good stories--keep them coming!

By _Maltheus_ at 9:58 AM ON 07/02/09

Give it up or let him fly. Those are the only two options.

By Rob at 6:37 PM ON 07/02/09

The series should have changed it's name from Smallville to Metropolis with it's 8th season.

By high guard at 10:16 PM ON 07/02/09

I would like to see Pete and Kara appear on season 9 before the show warps up

By neal at 7:54 PM ON 07/03/09

I loved this show from the beginning, but i am also tired of the fact that he has not become superman already. This show should be coming to an end soon, as they are running out of stories in my opinion. I say make him superman, introduce bruce wayne "long overdue", and have the show end on a high note. Then the cw can start with green arrow or some other hero, and superman can drop in once in a while.

By Norman619 at 11:18 PM ON 07/03/09

Smallville has gotten pretty damn stupid. I gave up on the show when they had the stupid witch arch. The writers are amaturish at best. I tried watching it again this past season and to my shock it has gotten worse. The show has become VERY predictable. Let it end and start a new series. The Aquaman pilot wasn't bad at all.

By firefox at 2:34 AM ON 07/04/09

I think that everyone has an agenda and wants that carried through.... no one even considered storyline or probability for the year of 2000 everyone seems stuck in the 1900..... buck up buckeroos.... and learn that we are not 1900 but farther down the road which I think you all have not encountered.... things change and sometimes you just have to go with the flow....I don't think all that the writers have done are all that perfect but they have come up with some pretty good *what ifs* and if you people can't see that, then you need to get a life

By bigb at 12:02 AM ON 07/10/09

first i would like to start that ive liker the show from the start but now its gettin realy dumb and its should have ended like 6-7 after all i mean did clarks mom ever leave the farm like that u never see her any more she and the dad was a big part of the story i thought butt any way for syfiguy the reason i think he got a job there so fast was cause of lex and tess wantin to keep him close to watch him so but thats just my opion and i think they should have the best season and end it with him flyin off or somthing kool like a 2hr final show and i didint know they was movine it to fri wtf thats dumb first tues then thurs now fri just end it if there tryin to get it off the air well thanx for the ear

By firefox at 10:14 PM ON 07/17/09

I think you all should just let the season roll on.... from my point of view and it is a close one.... they have a new game going on here and for those stuff shirts out there who keep screaming fly fly fly... shove it.... there is a reason why it is not happening and just take it for that.... the Friday night slot is not the death toll... as one mentioned here stargate 1 lasted quite some time in the same slot on Friday night.... cool it people and let the producers do their thing.....
